The Book of Boba Fett is a follow-up mini-series to the highly acclaimed show, The Mandalorian.  It was first announced as a post-credit scene in the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian. This generated hype as Star Wars fans have always wanted to learn more about Boba Fett. He was a prominent figure in the Star Wars universe. His support role in the Mandalorian generated a lot of hype.

After watching all 7 episodes of the series, it was a rather disappointing outing for Boba Fett. The pacing, questionable direction, and portrayal of some characters greatly affected the series. The first episode of the series started out strong and showed how Boba Fett officially got out of the Sarlacc Pit after 40+ years.  Then the pacing of the quickly takes a hard turn. The character portrayal of Boba Fett went from this near invincible guy to someone who can very easily gets tossed around. A great contrast to his re-introduction from The Mandalorian where he was able to decimate an entire platoon of Storm Troopers by himself.

The second episode of the series had the same issues as episode 1 but with more flashbacks about the Tusken Raiders which turned out to be quite insightful for those who are into the deeper lore of Star Wars. The Tusken Raiders have always been shown to be these savages in the Star Wars, but the series gave the viewers a deeper understanding of these desert bandits.  The series showed how they ae comprised of multiple tribes and how each tribe works differently from each other.  This episode did a good job expanding the universe of Star Wars but as a story about Boba Fett, it left us wanting and wondering, why should you care about Boba Fett?

The third episode in my opinion is the worst one in the series. The highlight in this episode is the introduction of Black Krrsantan, who was a fan favorite in the comic books. Then came the introduction of the Modders, a group of people who mod their bodies to have cybernetic enhancements.  This was very poorly handled as the Modders seemed out of place in the Star Wars universe. The episode was utterly boring.  I considered quitting watching the series altogether

The fourth episode is one of the more forgettable episodes even though this was where Boba Fett found Fennec’s body and nursed her back to life after being severely wounded in The Mandolorian. The episode showed how their partnership blossomed and why Fennec stuck around Boba Fett even after her contract to help him has ended.  I stopped caring about the series at this point and totally lost interest in Boba Fett as a character in the Star Wars universe.  The series was unable to build the character of Bob Fett.  There was nothing to remember about the character other than he has a very cool armor design.

The fifth episode was one of the best episodes in the series. This was the only episode where Boba Fett did not appear and instead, Din Djarin from the Mandalorian took over as the central figure of the episode. I absolutely loved this episode as it did show what I expected out of Boba Fett as a character but through another character. This show felt like The Mandalorian season 3 episode 1 rather than a Book of Boba Fett show. The main highlight of the fifth episode is that the Din Djarin wanted to learn more about the Dark saber after winning it in combat and how to wield it properly. The rest of the episode is heavy on spoilers, and I would rather have people watch the episode.

The sixth episode is probably one of the greatest things I have seen for the series since The Mandalorian season 2 finale. It wasn’t exactly an action-heavy episode, but it was a purely character-driven episode. Again, it wasn’t Boba Fett who was the central figure of this episode. He did show up for 2 minutes without a speaking line and then shifted focus back to other characters. This episode is extremely difficult to write about as it contains a ton of spoilers about the Star Wars universe, but I would say you would need to have watched a ton of Star Wars media to absolutely get the excitement that happened in this episode. This episode proved a point where the series became better when Boba Fett wasn’t the central figure and caused multiple memes to be spread on the internet about this pattern in the series.

The last episode of the Book of Boba Fett was pretty decent. It tied up every single episode neatly and was a very action-driven episode. It was exciting to see Boba Fett acting like how he was re-introduced into the series in The Mandalorian.  It was a shame that they didn’t do that for him since the beginning of the series. It was amazing to see Din Djarin and Boba Fett fighting side by side using all of their Mandalorian arsenals. We even got to see a spectacular Rancor vs Droids fight that felt like it straight up came from a Kaiju movie. The thing though that felt off about the episode was the finale. The finale was anti-climactic and felt out of place – like a cheesy kids’ movie.

Overall, I wanted to say that you should skip episodes 1-4 and get straight to the best episodes but Episode 7 showed that you have to watch every episode to fully grasp the ending of the show. It was pretty disappointing to see a Star Wars legend such as Boba Fett reduced into something that felt out of character. I can see it as a portrayal of a hardened bounty hunter who softened due to age and wanting to redeem himself, but the transition could have been done way smoother and much more efficiently if there was a consistent check on the quality of each episode and how each director should have shown the story.

Watch this series only if you are a long-time Star Wars fan.  I do not recommend watching it if you don’t know anything about the Star Wars franchise.
