2022 Polls is over. The people have spoken. Following the Latin maxim “Vox Populi, Vox Dei”, the voice of the people is the voice of God, the losers must yield to the decision of the majority. That is the essence of democracy. Disturbing the peace by holding meaningless rallies led by groups identified by the state as fronts of terrorists need to be addressed ASAP by the guardians of democracy – AFP, PNP and their lawful multipliers.
I appreciate the moves of some presidential aspirants like Sen. Ping Lacson, Sen. Manny Pacquiao, Mayor Isko Moreno and Labor leader Leody de Guzman, peacefully conceding to the will of the people. Truly, magnanimity in times of defeat is noble! By doing so, they retain the respect and admiration of the people.
On the other hand, one presidential aspirant appears to be defiant of the election result. From her statements, it could be gleaned that she is not accepting defeat and even stated in the vernacular “this is just the beginning”. The beginning of what is something you and I can only speculate. From my own understanding, it seems that she is calling on her supporters to do protest rallies because a day after she said that, groups of leftists shouting her name and that of her VP who also lost the election, paraded in front of the COMELEC building with placards accusing the winners of cheating and the commission of not doing its job well.
More than 31 million Filipinos voted for Bongbong Marcos and Sara Duterte and I am not surprised. I have been monitoring their campaign caravans-rallies-sorties since day one via Facebook and YouTube and the multitude of people who attended is more than enough proof that they will make it to the top. It could be recalled that even prior to their filing of certificates of candidacies (COCs), political analysts and scientists were already predicting that in the event they will run together as President and Vice President, their tandem would be hard to beat.
Another thing that catapulted them to the top is their “positive campaigning.” Never did they utter any defamatory remarks against their opponents making them earn the love and respect of the vast majority of people. Now that the election is over, it’s about time to start healing the wounds created by a very divisive political exercise. We are all Filipinos and this country is the only one we have so let us work together for the common good. Let us all unite and rebuild what has been destroyed by the pandemic and the ego that has been crashed by defeat. Remember the old saying “United we stand, divided we fall.”
