Management and leadership

Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things (Peter Drucker)

For better outcomes in big and small organizations, good management and leadership must come together like a horse and carriage; bat and ball; coffee and cream; soap and water; dust pan and broom, etc. Though one may exist independently without the other, the objective(s) can be successfully and easily achieved if they are together.

In the family which is the smallest unit of our society, each of the members must contribute something for the betterment of the family.  In an ideal set-up a long time ago, the father being the head of the family was obliged to work hard not only to feed his household but to discipline and teach his children the right way they should go so that “when they grow up, they will not depart from it”. The mother on the other hand was tasked to do the household chores while teaching the children good moral values that will be their guide in the future.

In this contemporary time, modern science and technology have greatly influenced our daily lives.  The people, young and old alike, are equipped with gadgets they carry with them wherever they go, sometimes making them lose their focus on what they are supposed to do at home because they have to attend their classes and do business transactions on line.  The old-time trait of “a family that prays together stays together” seems not practicable anymore since each one in the family has to attend to their individual task at a different given time.

Gadgets are not bad per se in this modern era, as a matter of fact, it is an indispensable tool to cope with the fast-changing times – monitoring global inflation; armed conflicts; newly discovered illnesses and their cure; status of relatives abroad and many more. However, its use must be regulated by the proper authorities to prevent crimes and other malevolent acts like what happened to the much talked-about case of radio broadcaster Percy Lapid.  It’s a fact that even inmates in the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prison have communication devices which they obviously use in secret. This is where management and leadership must go together to forestall the commission of crimes.

Quoting Stephen Covey, “management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall.”  The manager accepts the status quo, the leader challenges it. A good leader innovates, asks what and why and his eyes must be on the horizon and not simply on the bottom line. As a reminder to our local leaders, listen to what Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “You don’t lead by hitting people over the head – that’s assault, not leadership.”

I was born to write and I believe that’s my calling.  I love writing because it brings me to the realm exclusively of mine. It is also my opinion that “immortality” can be achieved not by searching for the Holy Grail and drinking from it but by living your life worth-writing or writing something worth-reading.  Since I cannot promise you a life worth-writing, I keep myself busy writing something worth-reading.  I am thankful to God for giving me the talent and skill to see life in different perspectives not seen by many and the courage to share it to my readers. This first ever Tutubi Digital News Magazine is a perfect avenue to bring you the many facets of life that you can ponder upon in this time of the pandemic. Enjoy reading all the articles.
