Israeli airstrikes kill dozens in Gaza as Blinken’s visit ends without a truce deal

CAIRO/JERUSALEM. Israeli airstrikes across Gaza have resulted in the deaths of at least 50 Palestinians in the past 24 hours, according to Palestinian health authorities. This surge in violence comes as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken concludes his visit to the Middle East with no clear resolution to the ongoing conflict.

The Israeli military reported that its jets targeted approximately 30 locations throughout the Gaza Strip, including tunnels, launch sites, and an observation post. “Troops continued to target militants and seize weapons and ammunition,” the military stated. The strikes reportedly killed numerous armed fighters and led to the capture of explosives, grenades, and automatic rifles.

In a bid to safeguard civilians, the military issued new evacuation orders for Deir Al-Balah, a densely populated area in central Gaza where many displaced individuals have taken refuge. These orders were followed by tank fire, resulting in at least one death and several injuries from machine gun fire, according to medics and local residents.

The intensified conflict persists despite diplomatic efforts led by Blinken, who has been negotiating with leaders from Egypt, Qatar, and Israel. The focus of these discussions has been the dire situation in Gaza, where the ongoing military campaign has claimed over 40,000 lives since October, based on Palestinian health data.

The conflict began on October 7 of the previous year, when Hamas militants launched an attack on Israeli communities and military bases, killing around 1,200 people and taking approximately 250 hostages, according to Israeli figures.

For those displaced in Deir Al-Balah, the lack of progress towards a ceasefire has exacerbated their plight. Aburakan, a 55-year-old from Gaza City who has relocated multiple times since October, voiced his frustration: “Where will we go? Where will we go?” He lamented his fruitless search for safe refuge, adding, “Unfortunately, we may die before we see an end to this war. All ceasefire talk is a lie.”

Palestinian and United Nations officials report that most of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been displaced by the ongoing Israeli offensive, which has devastated large portions of the enclave.

Movie Review: ‘Between the Temples’ – a divine harmony between Schwartzman and Kane

Nathan Silver’s latest film, Between the Temples, offers a refreshingly unconventional take on grief and renewal with its screwball charm. Starring Jason Schwartzman as a cantor grappling with the loss of his wife and Carol Kane as an eccentric elderly woman seeking her bat mitzvah, the film weaves a narrative that is as unpredictable as it is touching.

In this quirky comedy, Schwartzman plays Ben Gottlieb, a cantor who has lost his singing voice and perhaps his faith following his wife’s tragic accident. Living with his overbearing mother, Meira (Caroline Aaron), and her equally meddlesome wife, Judith (Dolly de Leon), Ben is thrust into a world of awkward encounters and deep personal struggle. The film opens with Ben’s humorous misunderstanding of a date set up by his mother, which sets the tone for the rest of the story.

Ben’s life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Carla (Carol Kane), a former music teacher who now wants to celebrate a bat mitzvah despite her advanced age. Their initial meeting occurs after a series of events that see Ben fighting his grief at a bar and Carla rescuing him post-performance. Their chemistry is immediate and fraught with comedic and emotional tension.

Carla’s desire for a bat mitzvah is initially met with skepticism by Ben, but the two bond over their shared sense of loss and bizarre sense of humor. The film explores their unique connection through a series of memorable scenes, including one where they share burgers that Ben realizes are not kosher, filmed in intimate close-ups that highlight their growing camaraderie.

The film’s aesthetic, characterized by its erratic 16mm filming and improvisational style by cinematographer Sean Price Williams, mirrors the story’s chaotic charm. Silver’s direction and the script co-written with C. Mason Wells infuse the film with surreal moments and comedic high points, including a scene at a steakhouse with hilariously oversized menus that pay homage to filmmakers like Elaine May.

One of the standout features of Between the Temples is the vibrant dynamic between Schwartzman and Kane. Their dialogue and interactions bring a unique rhythm to the film, with Kane’s endearing quirks and Schwartzman’s understated performance creating a memorable on-screen duo. As Carla puts it, “Music is the sound that you make,” a sentiment that beautifully encapsulates the film’s exploration of personal rediscovery through unconventional means.

Between the Temples is a Sony Pictures Classics release, rated R by the Motion Picture Association for language and some sexual references. With a running time of 111 minutes, the film earns three and a half stars out of four for its imaginative storytelling and captivating performances.

Get ready for August’s supermoon: A celestial spectacle kicking off four months of lunar wonders

0

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. Stargazers are in for a treat as the first of four supermoons this year graces the night sky next week, marking the beginning of a series of spectacular lunar events.

On Monday, the full moon will reach its supermoon phase, appearing slightly larger and brighter as it moves closer to Earth than usual. This celestial event provides an excellent opportunity for skywatchers to observe our planet’s natural satellite up close.

“I like to think of the supermoon as a good excuse to start looking at the moon more regularly,” said Noah Petro, project scientist for NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.

August’s supermoon is just the beginning of a series of lunar phenomena. September’s supermoon will be accompanied by a partial lunar eclipse, offering an additional visual treat. October will feature the year’s closest supermoon, while November will round out the series with the final supermoon of 2024.

What Makes a Moon “Super”?

The term “supermoon” is more popular than scientific. It occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon’s closest approach to Earth, known as perigee. This alignment happens about three or four times a year due to the moon’s elliptical orbit. Although the moon’s size doesn’t physically increase, it can appear noticeably larger and brighter during these events.

“Unless you have looked at a lot of full moons or compare them in images, it is hard to notice the difference, but people should try,” Petro noted in an email.

How Do This Year’s Supermoons Compare?

This year’s supermoons are set to impress:

  • August’s Supermoon will be about 224,917 miles (361,970 kilometers) from Earth.
  • September’s Supermoon will come nearly 3,000 miles (4,484 kilometers) closer on the night of September 17, coinciding with a partial lunar eclipse visible across much of the Americas, Africa, and Europe.
  • October’s Supermoon will be the closest of the year at 222,055 miles (357,364 kilometers) from Earth.
  • November’s Supermoon will be about 224,853 miles (361,867 kilometers) away.

Why Should You Care?

While the visual differences can be subtle, supermoons are typically about 30% brighter than an average full moon. With renewed interest in lunar exploration, particularly through NASA’s Artemis program, the moon is gaining attention like never before.

“It certainly makes it more fun to stare at,” Petro said, reflecting on the excitement surrounding upcoming lunar missions.

So mark your calendars and prepare to enjoy these stunning celestial events that highlight the beauty and fascination of our moon.

MAYNILA. Umabot na sa mahigit 832,000 ang mga contractual employees sa gobyerno, ayon sa Department of Budget and Management (DBM). Sa budget deliberations para sa panukalang P6.32-trillion na budget para sa 2025 sa Senate finance sub-committee, sinabi ni DBM Secretary Amenah Pangandaman na “The bulk of this number of contract of service and job order workers in the government are in the local government units at 580,323 or 69.68% as of June 30, 2023.”

  • National government agencies: 173,227 o 20.8%
  • State universities and colleges: 44,168 o 5.3%
  • Government-owned and -controlled corporations: 28,667 o 3.44%
  • Local water districts: 6,427 o 0.77%

Ayon kay Villanueva, “I trust the secretary to take a lead on this because it’s been a while. We talked about this last year, and unfortunately, there are still many agencies that are not responding to our calls.”

“The DBM and Civil Service can publish a circular of sorts to really encourage, across the board, all agencies, to reclassify and fill out their [unfilled] positions. Because not all agencies request this,” paliwanag ni Pangandaman.

Dagdag pa niya, “One of the things we are looking at for the circular is that for positions which have been left unfilled for more than 10 years, maybe we can scrap it and reclassify it, and create new positions.”

Hiniling ni Villanueva na asahan ang mga pangako ni Pangandaman, ngunit binalaan niyang “Unfortunately, the improvement has been so slow. Because it is very hard to push for an end to contractualization, asking the private sector to get away or reject the idea of end of contract [after every six months], and yet the government is the number one violator. That would be tough.”

Philippines to accommodate U.S. visa processing center for up to 300 Afghan resettlements

MANILA. The Philippines has agreed to temporarily host a U.S. immigrant visa processing center for Afghan nationals seeking resettlement in the United States. The decision, announced Tuesday, represents a significant step in the deepening relationship between Manila and Washington under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the agreement is in its final stages and awaits ratification by President Marcos. While specific details remain limited, a senior Philippine official disclosed to The Associated Press that the center will accommodate between 150 to 300 Afghan applicants under this “one-time” arrangement. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the negotiations.

Assistant Secretary Teresita Daza from the Department of Foreign Affairs stated that Afghan nationals must obtain a visa to enter the Philippines and will undergo “full security vetting.” Each visa will allow a stay of no more than 59 days. The U.S. government will cover all costs associated with their stay, including food, housing, security, medical, and transportation expenses. The International Organization for Migration will manage the facility where the Afghan applicants will be housed, ensuring they receive adequate social, educational, and religious support.

In a statement, the U.S. State Department expressed gratitude to the Philippines for its support, noting, “We appreciate its long and positive history of bilateral cooperation with the Philippines.”

The Afghan nationals eligible for resettlement are those who worked for the U.S. government in Afghanistan or were eligible for U.S. special immigrant visas but were left behind during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal in 2021 as the Taliban regained control.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken first presented the request to his Philippine counterpart in 2022, and the proposal was later discussed between President Joe Biden and President Marcos during Marcos’ visit to the United States last year.

Initially, Marcos indicated that up to 1,000 Afghan nationals might be permitted to stay in the Philippines at any one time. However, he also highlighted potential challenges, including legal and logistical issues, as well as concerns about security risks and the handling of Afghan nationals whose visa applications face delays or rejections.

Since taking office, Marcos has strengthened ties with the U.S., including agreeing to expand American military presence under a 2014 defense agreement—a move that has drawn concerns from China over regional stability.

The temporary visa processing center in the Philippines is seen as a crucial step in aiding Afghan allies who have supported U.S. efforts and are now seeking refuge as part of the broader resettlement program.

WHO official: Mpox is not the new COVID, emphasizes control measures

BERLIN. A World Health Organization (WHO) official has reassured the public that mpox, despite recent concerns about its new strain, should not be equated with COVID-19. Authorities are well-equipped to manage and control its spread, according to Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe.

“We can and must tackle mpox together,” Kluge asserted during a UN media briefing. “So will we choose to put the systems in place to control and eliminate mpox globally? Or will we enter another cycle of panic and neglect? How we respond now and in the years to come will prove a critical test for Europe and the world,” he added.

Mpox, a viral infection characterized by pus-filled lesions and flu-like symptoms, is generally mild but can be fatal in some cases. The newly identified clade 1b variant has raised global alarm due to its increased transmissibility through close contact. This variant was recently confirmed in Sweden, marking the first spread outside Africa, where it was initially detected. The WHO declared this outbreak a public health emergency of international concern following the identification of the new strain.

Kluge emphasized that the focus on this new clade 1 strain will enhance efforts against the less severe clade 2 strain, which has been circulating globally since 2022. He noted that approximately 100 new cases of the clade 2 mpox strain are reported in Europe each month.

Mpox spreads through close physical contact, including sexual contact, but unlike COVID-19, there is no evidence to suggest it spreads easily through the air. WHO spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic confirmed that there are no current recommendations for mask-wearing, though health authorities remain vigilant for potential changes in the virus’s transmission routes.

Health authorities are urged to stay alert and adaptable to prevent new, more transmissible strains from emerging and altering the transmission dynamics of mpox.

British tech mogul Mike Lynch and his daughters among 6 missing after luxury yacht sinks off Sicily

PALERMO, Sicily. A rescue operation is underway off the coast of Sicily after a luxury yacht, carrying British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch and five others, sank during a violent storm early Monday.

The 56-meter-long (184-ft) superyacht, Bayesian, was anchored near Porticello when a fierce waterspout struck, leading to its capsizing. The yacht was carrying 22 people at the time, including Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, and other notable individuals such as Judy and Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

As of Tuesday, divers are continuing their search of the wreck, which rests at a depth of approximately 49 meters (160 feet). “The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” said Salvatore Cocina, head of civil protection in Sicily. The search has been complicated by the confined spaces inside the wreck and challenging underwater conditions. Fire brigade spokesman Luca Cari noted, “Inside the sailing ship, the spaces are very confined, and if you hit an obstacle it is very complicated to move forward.”

The vessel’s mast, a notable 75 meters (246 feet) in height, might have snapped during the storm, but this has yet to be confirmed. The yacht, which was listed for charter at up to €195,000 per week, had a crew of 10 and 12 passengers. The intense storm and waterspout left little time for those below deck to escape. Karsten Borner, skipper of a nearby vessel, reported that the Bayesian sank within two minutes after flipping on its side.

Out of the 22 on board, 15 managed to escape before the yacht capsized. One body was recovered, believed to be the cook, and survivors include Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares. The rescue efforts involved helicopters and rescue boats, with the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch deploying a team to Italy for a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office is providing consular support to the British nationals and their families.

Lynch, who was acquitted in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to the $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp, has been a prominent figure in the tech industry. His acquittal followed a high-profile trial in San Francisco.

The Bayesian, originally named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, was built in 2008 by Italian firm Perini Navi and featured a minimalist interior designed by French designer Remi Tessier. It accommodated 12 passengers in luxurious settings and was equipped with modern amenities.

As rescue operations continue, authorities are grappling with the difficult conditions and the hope of finding the missing individuals.

Alice Guo, nasa Indonesia na; Philippine passport niya kinansela

0

MAYNILA.

Tumawid siya from Singapore the other day, August 18,” sabi ni Sandoval.

Israel recovers six hostage bodies from Gaza

JERUSALEM. The Israeli military announced on Tuesday that it had recovered the bodies of six hostages from Gaza, who were abducted during the Hamas attack on October 7 that triggered the ongoing war. This recovery comes as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Arab mediators strive to advance a ceasefire agreement and negotiate the release of other captives held by militants.

The Israeli military reported that the bodies were retrieved in an overnight operation in southern Gaza. Details on the circumstances of their deaths were not provided, though a forum representing the hostage families confirmed they were initially taken alive. Hamas has alleged that some hostages were killed or injured in Israeli airstrikes.

The recovery of these remains is a significant setback for Hamas, which seeks to use hostage exchanges as leverage for Palestinian prisoner releases, an Israeli withdrawal, and a durable ceasefire. It also intensifies pressure on the Israeli government to secure a deal for the remaining hostages still believed to be alive.

The military identified the deceased as Chaim Perry, 80; Yoram Metzger, 80; Avraham Munder, 79; Alexander Dancyg, 76; Nadav Popplewell, 51; and Yagev Buchshtav, 35. Notably, Metzger, Munder, Popplewell, and Buchshtav had family members who were also abducted but released during a November ceasefire.

Kibbutz Nir Oz, where Munder was taken captive, confirmed his death, stating he had endured “months of physical and mental torture.” The Israeli authorities had previously determined that the other five hostages were deceased.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his condolences, stating, “Our hearts ache for the terrible loss.” He reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to returning all hostages, whether alive or dead.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant praised the operation, noting it was conducted within Hamas’ extensive tunnel network. There were no immediate reports of casualties among Israelis or Palestinians during the recovery.

Hamas is still believed to hold approximately 110 hostages from the October 7 attack, with Israeli officials estimating that about one-third of them are deceased. Blinken, currently on his ninth visit to the region since the war began, reported that Netanyahu has agreed to a proposal aimed at bridging gaps in the ceasefire negotiations, urging Hamas to do the same.

Hamas has accused the U.S. of aligning with Israeli demands and attempting to impose them on the militant group. Key issues remain unresolved, including Israel’s demand for enduring control over two strategic Gaza corridors, which Hamas has rejected.

Since the attack on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of about 1,200 people, predominantly civilians, and the capture of around 250 hostages, the conflict has escalated. Over 100 hostages were previously released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners during a ceasefire last year. The ongoing Israeli offensive has claimed over 40,000 Palestinian lives, with widespread destruction and displacement affecting Gaza’s 2.3 million residents. Aid organizations are concerned about potential disease outbreaks, including polio.

The Palestinian Civil Defense reported that an Israeli airstrike on the Mustafa Hafez school in Gaza City, where around 700 people were sheltering, resulted in at least 10 deaths. An additional airstrike in central Gaza killed a mother and her five children.

Mediators are working to finalize a proposal for a three-phase process involving hostage releases, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and a lasting truce. Blinken is scheduled to visit Egypt and Qatar, which have been instrumental in mediating with Hamas.

French film icon Alain Delon passes away at 88

PARIS. Alain Delon, the renowned French actor known for his captivating roles as both a hero and an anti-hero, has died at the age of 88, according to French media reports. Delon, whose striking looks and complex portrayals made him an international heartthrob, left an indelible mark on cinema.

French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute on X (formerly Twitter), calling Delon “a French monument.” Macron wrote, “Alain Delon has played legendary roles and made the world dream. Melancholic, popular, secretive, he was more than a star.”

Delon’s children confirmed his passing on Sunday in a statement to the French national news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP), a practice common in France. Following the announcement, tributes flooded social media, and French media outlets dedicated extensive coverage to his illustrious career.

Earlier this year, his son Anthony revealed that Delon had been diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma, a type of cancer. Delon’s declining health had been a source of family conflict, leading to public disputes among his three children.

During his peak in the 1960s and 1970s, Delon was highly sought after by some of the world’s most prominent directors, including Luchino Visconti and Joseph Losey. Despite his disillusionment with the film industry in later years, Delon remained a prolific actor, appearing in numerous television movies well into his 70s. He once lamented, “Money, commerce and television have wrecked the dream machine. My cinema is dead. And me, too,” in a 2003 interview with Le Nouvel Observateur.

Delon first gained international recognition in 1960 with his role in Plein Soleil, directed by René Clément. He continued to shine in films such as Visconti’s Rocco and His Brothers and The Leopard, the latter of which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1963.

In addition to his acting career, Delon ventured into film production, with 26 films to his credit by 1990. His charismatic presence extended beyond the screen, exemplified by his statement to Femme in 1996, “I like to be loved the way I love myself!”

However, Delon’s career was not without controversy. He faced criticism for his views on women, LGBTQIA+ rights, and migrants, which led to his resignation as president of the Miss France jury in 2013. Despite these controversies, Delon was awarded the Palme d’Honneur at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, a decision that sparked further debate.

The Cannes Film Festival expressed its “sadness” at Delon’s passing, stating that he “embodied French cinema far beyond its borders.” The Brigitte Bardot Foundation, dedicated to animal protection, also honored Delon, calling him “an exceptional man, an unforgettable artist and a great friend of animals.” The foundation noted that Delon was “a close friend” of Brigitte Bardot, who is “deeply saddened by his passing.”

French film producer Alain Terzian remarked on Delon’s legacy, saying, “It’s a page being turned in the history of French cinema.” Terzian described Delon as “the last of the giants,” recalling the “almost mystical, quasi-religious respect” he commanded.

Born on November 8, 1935, in Sceaux, just south of Paris, Delon had a tumultuous childhood, marked by his parents’ separation and a stint in a Roman Catholic boarding school. He later served in the navy and worked various jobs before turning to acting in 1956.

Delon had three children: Anthony, with his first wife Nathalie Canovas; and Anouchka and Alain-Fabien, with later partner Rosalie van Breemen. Delon was also believed to be the father of Ari Boulogne, though he never publicly acknowledged paternity.

Throughout his life, Delon juggled various pursuits, including horse racing, cologne development, and art collection. Despite announcing his retirement in 1999, he continued acting, with his final film appearance in 2011.

Reflecting on his legacy at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, Delon said, “One thing I’m sure about is that if there’s something I’m proud of, really, the only thing, it’s my career.”
