Philippine and Chinese ships collide again in disputed waters, and both nations are trading blame

0

MANILA. A tense standoff in the South China Sea escalated further as Philippine and Chinese coast guard ships collided early Monday near the contested Sabina Shoal, sparking a new wave of recriminations between the two nations. The incident has intensified concerns over the volatile situation in the region, where overlapping territorial claims have frequently led to confrontations.

The collision, which occurred at approximately 3:24 a.m., involved two Philippine Coast Guard ships, the BRP Bagacay and the BRP Cape Engaño, and multiple Chinese vessels. Both sides have accused each other of causing the incident, which left the Philippine ships with significant structural damage but no reported injuries.

China’s coast guard quickly issued a statement accusing the Philippines of deliberately ramming one of its ships. “The Philippine side is entirely responsible for the collision,” asserted spokesperson Gan Yu, who warned that further provocations could have serious consequences. According to Gan, two Philippine ships entered Chinese-claimed waters near the shoal, ignored repeated warnings, and intentionally collided with a Chinese vessel.

However, the Philippines has staunchly denied these claims. Jonathan Malaya, Assistant Director-General of the Philippine government’s National Security Council, refuted the Chinese allegations, presenting video and photographic evidence to support the Philippines’ position. “The Chinese ships caused the collisions,” Malaya stated during a news forum in Manila, where he emphasized the aggressive actions of the Chinese coast guard.

The Philippine National Task Force on the West Philippine Sea released a statement condemning what it described as “unlawful and aggressive maneuvers” by the Chinese vessels. The task force detailed the damage inflicted on the two Filipino ships, including a 1.1-meter hole on the BRP Cape Engaño and a three-foot-wide gash on the BRP Bagacay.

“This is the biggest structural damage we have incurred as a result of the dangerous maneuvers carried out by the Chinese Coast Guard,” noted Commodore Jay Tarriela of the Philippine Coast Guard.

The disputed Sabina Shoal, known as Xianbin Reef in Chinese, is part of the Spratly Islands, a region claimed by multiple countries including China, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Taiwan. The shoal has become a flashpoint for territorial disputes, particularly following the deployment of Filipino Coast Guard vessels to the area in April, amid suspicions that China was preparing to establish a permanent presence.

The collision has also cast doubt on a recent agreement between China and the Philippines intended to reduce confrontations when the Philippines transports personnel and supplies to its outpost at the nearby Second Thomas Shoal. “We are of course disappointed again,” Malaya said, highlighting the fragility of the understanding reached last month.

China, which asserts “indisputable sovereignty” over the Spratlys, responded by reiterating its territorial claims and calling on the Philippines to adhere to the recent agreement. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated, “We hope the Philippines will keep its promise, earnestly abide by the preliminary agreement it has reached with China, and not take actions that could complicate the situation.”

The United States has expressed its support for the Philippines in the wake of the incident. U.S. Ambassador MaryKay Carlson condemned the Chinese coast guard’s actions, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that the U.S. stands with the Philippines “in condemning the China Coast Guard’s dangerous maneuvers near Sabina Shoal that endangered lives and caused damage.”

This latest incident adds to the ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, a region of strategic and economic significance that has seen an increase in confrontations as China continues to assert its expansive maritime claims, despite a 2016 ruling by a United Nations tribunal invalidating Beijing’s claims. China has refused to recognize the ruling, further complicating efforts to manage the disputes in the region.

Jonathan Malaya, Assistant Director-General of the Philippine government’s National Security Council, refuted the Chinese allegations, presenting video and photographic evidence to support the Philippines’ position.

0

MAYNILA.

“The [new] case is a 33 year old male Filipino national with no travel history outside the Philippines but with close, intimate contact three weeks before symptom onset,” ayon sa DOH.

“PCR test results are positive for Monkeypox viral DNA,” ayon sa DOH.

“Three weeks ang recommended period of isolation.

Shiveluch volcano erupts after 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Russia, ash column reaches 5 miles high

0

KAMCHATKA, RUSSIA. A powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s east coast triggered an eruption of the Shiveluch volcano on Sunday, sending a massive ash column soaring 5 miles into the sky, according to state-run media reports.

The Shiveluch volcano, situated approximately 280 miles from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in the Kamchatka region, released an ash cloud that reached 8 kilometers (5 miles) above sea level. The eruption was accompanied by a significant outflow of lava, according to TASS, a state-run news agency.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located about 55 miles from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, with a depth of approximately 30 miles, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Despite the quake’s strength, no major damage was reported in the area. TASS noted that buildings are currently being inspected for potential structural issues, with a focus on social facilities such as schools and hospitals.

The Russian Emergencies Ministry did not issue a tsunami warning following the tremor, although earlier, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System had cautioned that “hazardous tsunami waves from this earthquake are possible within 300 km [approximately 186 miles] of the epicenter along the coasts of Russia.”

The Shiveluch volcano is one of Kamchatka’s most active and is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for its high seismic activity. The region is frequently monitored due to the potential risks posed by both earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The situation remains under close observation as authorities continue to assess the impact of both the earthquake and the volcanic eruption on the local population and infrastructure.

Alice Guo, nakatakas o nasa Pilipinas pa? – Hontiveros at DOJ magkasalungat ang pahayag

MAYNILA.

“Who allowed this travesty to happen?

Blinken urges immediate Gaza ceasefire as last chance for peace in Israel-Hamas conflict

TEL AVIV, Israel. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has issued a stark warning that the opportunity to secure a Gaza ceasefire, facilitate the release of hostages held by Hamas, and alleviate the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza may be slipping away. Speaking in Tel Aviv on Monday, Blinken emphasized that this could be the last chance to achieve a lasting peace after ten months of brutal conflict.

“This is a decisive moment, probably the best, maybe the last, opportunity to get the hostages home, to get a cease-fire, and to put everyone on a better path to enduring peace and security,” Blinken stated during a meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog.

Blinken’s visit, his ninth urgent mission to the region since the conflict began, comes as mediators, including the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, express cautious optimism that a ceasefire deal could be within reach. However, significant challenges remain. Hamas has voiced strong dissatisfaction with the latest proposal, while Israel has indicated that certain issues are non-negotiable.

Tensions are high as the conflict threatens to escalate further, with the recent killing of top militant commanders in Lebanon sparking accusations from Iran against Israel. Blinken underscored the importance of preventing any actions that could derail the peace process or provoke a wider regional war.

“It’s also time to make sure that no one takes any steps that could derail this process,” Blinken added, in a veiled reference to Iran. “We’re working to make sure that there is no escalation, that there are no provocations, that there are no actions that in any way move us away from getting this deal over the line.”

Israeli President Herzog expressed gratitude for the Biden administration’s unwavering support, while lamenting the recent surge in attacks against Israelis. “This is the way we are living these days,” Herzog said. “We are surrounded by terrorism from all four corners of the earth, and we are fighting back as a resilient and strong nation.”

The conflict, which began on October 7 when Hamas militants launched a surprise attack on Israel, has resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, and the abduction of around 250 individuals. Of those kidnapped, around 110 are believed to remain in Gaza, though Israeli authorities estimate that roughly a third may be dead. More than 100 hostages were released in November during a brief ceasefire.

The Israeli counteroffensive has been devastating, with local health authorities in Gaza reporting over 40,000 Palestinian casualties and extensive destruction across the territory.

Negotiations continue, with Blinken scheduled to meet with Egyptian officials in Cairo later this week in an effort to solidify a ceasefire. Meanwhile, talks between Israeli and Egyptian delegations have focused on contentious issues such as control of the Gaza-Egypt border and the proposed withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated that while Israel is willing to be flexible in some areas, there are limits to what it will concede. “We are conducting negotiations and not a scenario in which we just give and give,” Netanyahu remarked during a Cabinet meeting on Sunday.

Hamas, however, accuses Israel of imposing new demands, particularly concerning military presence along key routes in Gaza, which Israel contends are necessary to prevent arms smuggling. A Hamas statement late Sunday accused Netanyahu of deliberately setting obstacles to prolong the conflict, labeling the latest ceasefire proposal as a capitulation to Israeli conditions.

As the negotiations continued, Blinken urged both sides to seize this moment for peace. “It is time for everyone to get to yes and to not look for any excuses to say no,” he said.

The outcome of these talks could be critical in determining whether the region moves toward a fragile peace or deeper conflict. Formal responses to the U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal are expected this week, potentially leading to a breakthrough—or another collapse in the ongoing peace efforts.

Nakaisa!

Napakawalang kwenta ng Robinhood of the Philippine Senate.

Lorna Kapunan doon sa hearing ng Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media: “It’s important, ‘yung issue ng mutual respect. If your spouse refuses— whether valid or hindi—respetuhin natin `yung desisyon.”

Madonna will fund a $275,000 youth art project in Pompeii to celebrate her 66th birthday

Madonna, the iconic American pop star, has pledged to fund a youth art initiative as part of her 66th birthday celebrations. The announcement was made during her visit to the historic Pompeii archaeological site on Friday, where she was accompanied by Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the park’s director.

While touring the ancient ruins, Madonna encountered a group of teenagers participating in the “Sogno di Volare” (“Dream of Flying”) project. This initiative, now in its fourth year, brings together young artists to perform adapted versions of Aristophanes’ comedies. Starting at Pompeii’s Teatro Grande, the performances tour various Italian theaters.

Madonna’s generous commitment will fund the “Dream of Flying” project for a year, contributing approximately 250,000 euros ($275,000). “This project generously supported by Madonna is strategic for Pompeii because it is directed to the people who live in this marvelous and complex territory, in particular youths,” said Zuchtriegel. He emphasized that many of the participants come from impoverished southern towns where school dropout rates and unemployment are notably high.

The show, backed by Madonna’s foundation, is set to take the stage at Pompeii’s Teatro Grande in May 2025, promising to be a cultural highlight in the region.

Dinosaur-killing asteroid likely originated beyond Jupiter, new study reveals

CHICXULUB, Mexico. A groundbreaking study suggests that the asteroid responsible for the mass extinction of dinosaurs 66 million years ago likely originated from beyond Jupiter’s orbit, providing new insights into the origins of one of Earth’s most catastrophic events.

Published in the journal Science on Thursday, the study was conducted by a team of researchers led by Mario Fischer-Gödde from the University of Cologne in Germany. The scientists examined geological remains at the Chicxulub impact site in modern-day Mexico, where the asteroid struck with devastating force millions of years ago.

The team focused on analyzing ruthenium isotopes found in the impact deposits, comparing them with various classes of meteorites. “They found that the Chicxulub impactor was a carbonaceous asteroid that formed in the outer Solar System,” the study explains. This discovery contrasts with other known asteroid impacts, which were primarily caused by silicate asteroids originating in the inner Solar System.

Further, the study highlights that the Chicxulub impact created a global stratigraphic layer that marks the boundary between the Cretaceous and Paleogene eras, containing elevated concentrations of platinum-group elements, including ruthenium. This evidence supports the theory that the asteroid was formed in a region of the Solar System beyond Jupiter.

“So far, Chicxulub… seems to be a unique and rare case of a carbonaceous-type asteroid hitting Earth,” Fischer-Gödde told The New York Times, adding that previous studies have pointed to similar conclusions about the asteroid’s origins.

Fischer-Gödde also reflected on the significance of this event in Earth’s history: “Without this impact, what would our Earth look like today? We should probably value, a bit more, that we are around and this is maybe a lucky coincidence that everything came to place like it is today.”

The findings offer a deeper understanding of the cosmic forces that shaped the history of our planet, emphasizing the extraordinary and unique circumstances that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs and the eventual rise of mammals, including humans.

Scientists examine the impact of an asteroid that struck modern-day Chicxulub, Mexico, 66M years ago
Scientists investigating the asteroid that wiped out dinosaurs after slamming into the Earth 66 million years ago have released a new study suggesting that it formed “beyond the orbit of Jupiter.”

Ayon sa opisyal na abiso ng embahada, “The Philippine Embassy in Lebanon strongly urges all Filipino citizens to leave Lebanon immediately while the airport remains operational.”

  • Para sa overseas Filipinos (Dependents with Permanent Resident Status, i.e., wife iqama): +961 70858086

Dagdag pa ng embahada, “The safety and security of every Filipino citizen is our top priority. We urge you to act swiftly and follow the above instructions to ensure your safety.”

Ayon sa Reuters, “Hezbollah senior military commander Fuad Shukr was then killed after an Israeli air strike hit a suburb of Beirut.”
