Ferris wheel catches fire at German music festival, injuring over 20 people

LEIPZIG, Germany. A Ferris wheel at the Highfield Festival near Leipzig burst into flames on Saturday evening, leaving more than 20 people injured in a shocking incident that has stunned festival-goers.

The fire, which broke out shortly after 9 p.m. local time, engulfed two carriages of the ride, sending thick smoke billowing into the night sky. Disturbing images from the scene show the Ferris wheel ablaze as emergency responders rushed to the area.

According to a statement from the Saxony police, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. Four individuals suffered burn injuries, while another was injured from falling during the chaotic moments that followed. An additional 18 people, including first responders, police officers, and those on the ride, were exposed to smoke inhalation and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

“The ride caught fire unexpectedly, and the situation escalated quickly,” a police spokesperson said. “We are working to determine the exact cause of this incident.”

The scene of the fire has been cordoned off as authorities continue their investigation.

German rapper Ski Aggu was performing on stage at the festival when the Ferris wheel caught fire. In an Instagram story, he expressed his shock over the incident, writing, “I am dismayed and shocked by what happened tonight.”

Ski Aggu also revealed that he was instructed not to cancel his performance to prevent mass panic among the festival crowd. “I was told in my ear to ‘not cancel the show under any circumstances’ but to keep communicating with the audience to avoid any panic,” he added.

The Highfield Festival, one of Germany’s most popular music events, has now been marred by this tragic incident, with attendees and organizers alike reeling from the unexpected disaster.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra elected Thailand’s youngest prime minister

0

BANGKOK. A political newcomer was elected as Thailand’s youngest prime minister on Friday, just a day after stepping into the spotlight amidst a fierce power struggle among the nation’s elite. The 37-year-old daughter of Thaksin Shinawatra, a polarizing figure in Thai politics, secured the top position with a decisive parliamentary vote, becoming the third member of the Shinawatra family to hold the office.

Paetongtarn’s rapid ascent to the premiership follows the dismissal of her ally, Srettha Thavisin, who was ousted by a judiciary deeply intertwined in Thailand’s two-decade-long political unrest. Her victory, with 319 votes—nearly two-thirds of the house—comes at a crucial time for the Shinawatra dynasty, which saw its first electoral defeat in over 20 years last year and had to form a government in coalition with its long-time adversaries in the military.

In her first comments as prime minister-elect, Paetongtarn expressed her surprise and determination to lead the country through challenging times. “I talked to Srettha, my family, and people in my party and decided it was about time to do something for the country and the party,” she told reporters. “I hope I can do my best to make the country go forward. That’s what I’m trying to do. Today I’m honored and I feel very happy.”

Paetongtarn’s election is a significant gamble for the Pheu Thai Party, as she steps into a position fraught with challenges, including an economy in distress, growing competition from rival political parties, and declining popularity for Pheu Thai, which has yet to fulfill its promise of a 500 billion baht ($14.25 billion) cash handout program.

Despite her inexperience in government, Paetongtarn is now at the forefront of a high-stakes political drama. “The Shinawatras’ gambit here is risky,” said Nattabhorn Buamahakul, Managing Partner at Vero Advocacy. “It puts Thaksin’s daughter in the crosshairs and a vulnerable position.”

The recent dismissal of Srettha after less than a year in office is a stark reminder of the hostility Paetongtarn could face, with Thailand trapped in a cycle of coups and court rulings that have repeatedly dismantled political parties and toppled governments. The Shinawatra family, known for its mass appeal, has been a primary target of this turmoil, pitted against a powerful coalition of conservatives, old money elites, and royalist generals with deep connections in key institutions.

Paetongtarn’s election follows the dissolution of the Move Forward Party, which won the 2023 election, by the same court that ousted Srettha. The court’s decision to disband the anti-establishment party over its campaign to amend laws against insulting the monarchy has led to a regrouping of the opposition under the newly formed People’s Party, Pheu Thai’s biggest competitor.

The current upheaval signals a potential breakdown in the fragile truce between Thaksin and the establishment, which had allowed his return from 15 years of self-exile in 2023 and enabled Srettha’s brief tenure as prime minister. Thaksin’s decision to propel Paetongtarn into the political arena at such a critical time has surprised many analysts.

“This is a big bet for Thaksin. There is a possibility for her to fail, and that is a big risk for the entire Shinawatra dynasty,” said Titipol Phakdeewanich, a political scientist at Ubon Ratchathani University. “If she can’t bring the economy back and revive the party, it could be the end because the People’s Party is gaining more momentum after their dissolution.”

As Paetongtarn Shinawatra prepares to take office, the stakes have never been higher for her, her party, and the legacy of the Shinawatra family.

Israeli airstrike kills two senior Hamas militants in West Bank

JENIN, West Bank. Israel launched an airstrike on Saturday in Jenin, located in the occupied West Bank, killing two senior Hamas militants. The strike targeted their vehicle, with Israeli authorities claiming the militants were involved in the recent killing of an Israeli citizen.

The Israel Security Agency and the Israel Defense Forces identified the militants as Ahmed Abu Ara and Rafet Dawasi, both from the northern district of the West Bank around Jenin. The Israeli statement highlighted their involvement in planning a shooting attack last week in the Jordan Valley, where an Israeli man, Yonatan Deutsch, was killed.

Hamas’ military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, confirmed the deaths of the two fighters, mourning their loss in a statement: “We mourn the deaths of our two fighters in an Israeli airstrike on their vehicle in Jenin.”

The attack marks a significant escalation in violence in the West Bank, which has seen increased Israeli raids, Jewish settler violence, and Palestinian street attacks since the Gaza war between Israel and Hamas erupted in October. On August 11, Palestinian gunmen reportedly opened fire on a main road in the occupied West Bank, resulting in one death and another injury.

Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that their West Bank-based fighters killed an Israeli soldier near the settlement of Mehola in the Jordan Valley in retaliation for an Israeli strike on a school sheltering displaced Palestinians in Gaza City. The strike, according to Gaza’s civil defense service, killed at least 90 people.

The violence in the West Bank continues amid efforts to end the conflict. A new round of talks aimed at resolving the 10-month-long war in Gaza is scheduled to resume next week in Doha. However, the ongoing clashes in the West Bank and Gaza raise concerns about a potential spillover into a broader regional conflict, involving Iran and its regional proxies, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.

“Jackpot!” review: Awkwafina shines, but the comedy falls short

Paul Feig’s latest film, “Jackpot!”, brings a darkly comedic twist to the concept of winning the lottery, but with a catch that’s anything but lucky. Set in a near-future California, the film presents a dystopian scenario where buying a lottery ticket gives you a shot at billions—if you can survive until sundown. The catch? Everyone else is free to try to kill you and take the prize money, with the only rule being no guns. Drones hover overhead, guiding violent mobs to the “winner,” turning the streets into a deadly game of cat and mouse.

Awkwafina stars as Katie Kim, a former child actor desperate for a comeback in 2030 Hollywood. The film’s premise is reminiscent of Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery”, but with a farcical edge that leans more toward the chaotic satire seen in “The Purge”. While “Jackpot!” aims for a high-concept comedy, it often feels like a ridiculous gimmick, despite its potential.

The movie kicks off when Katie is announced as the latest lottery winner during an audition, sending the other actors into a frenzy to claim her head. John Cena co-stars as Noel Cassidy, a straight-laced, pinstripe-suit-wearing protector who offers to keep her alive—for a 10% fee. As they make their escape, a buddy comedy ensues, with Awkwafina’s sharp sarcasm playing well against Cena’s earnestness. At one point, Katie quips that Noel looks like “a bulldog that a witch cast a spell on and turned into a human,” perfectly capturing the film’s blend of humor and absurdity.

Yet, despite the dynamic between Awkwafina and Cena, “Jackpot!” struggles to maintain its momentum. The high-concept premise quickly grows tiresome, and the film’s predictability undermines its potential. Even the appearance of Machine Gun Kelly, whose panic room becomes a temporary refuge for Katie and Noel, feels more like a tonal fit than a meaningful addition to the plot.

Feig, known for hits like “Bridesmaids”, “Spy”, and “The Heat”, is adept at blending broad comedy with action, but “Jackpot!” doesn’t quite reach the heights of his previous work. The film seems emblematic of the fading era of big-screen comedies, as studios increasingly shy away from taking risks with humor in theaters. As Katie remarks in the film, Hollywood stardom isn’t what it used to be: “Now, even wrestlers and YouTubers can do it.”

While “Jackpot!” has its moments, particularly with Awkwafina in the lead, it ultimately falls short of delivering the kind of payoff one would expect from such a promising setup. The film is rated R for pervasive language, violence, and sexual references, and runs for 104 minutes. Unfortunately, it lands at just two stars out of four—a comedy that, despite its potential, never quite hits the jackpot.

Brazilian media mogul Silvio Santos passes away at 93, leaving a lasting legacy

SAO PAULO. Silvio Santos, the legendary Brazilian media mogul who rose from humble beginnings as a street vendor to become the owner of one of Brazil’s largest television networks, passed away at the age of 93. His broadcaster, SBT, announced the news on Saturday, confirming his death due to bronchopneumonia following complications from H1N1 flu.

“Today, heaven is happy with the arrival of our beloved Silvio Santos,” SBT shared on X (formerly Twitter). “Rest in Peace, you will always be eternal in our hearts.”

Silvio Santos, born Senor Abravanel, was a towering figure in Brazilian television. He founded SBT (Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão) in the 1980s, which quickly became one of the country’s most-watched TV stations. For years, SBT was the only real competitor to TV Globo, one of the largest media conglomerates in the Americas.

Unlike many media moguls, Santos was not just a behind-the-scenes figure. He was also a beloved showman, hosting his own TV programs until about 2022. Known for his charismatic presence, Santos captivated audiences with game shows that became particularly popular among lower-income families. One of his signature moves was to throw paper planes made of money into the audience, sparking a scramble as viewers tried to catch them.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences on X, calling Silvio Santos “the greatest personality in the history of Brazilian television and one of the country’s great communicators.”

Silvio Santos was the son of Sephardic Jewish immigrants who had settled in Rio de Janeiro’s Lapa district after leaving the former Ottoman Empire. He began his career as a teenager selling plastic covers for cards on the streets, a job that led him to be discovered by a radio station, where he was hired as an announcer. His charm and talent soon took him to television, where he hosted various shows in the 1960s and 1970s, including on TV Globo, before founding SBT in 1981.

Over the decades, Santos built a vast business empire that included a cosmetics company, a financial firm, and significant real estate holdings. In 2016, Forbes estimated his net worth to be over $1 billion.

Santos’s life was not without drama. In 2001, he made headlines when he was kidnapped for seven hours, just days after his daughter was also taken hostage. The harrowing event was broadcast live by local TV stations, further cementing his place in the nation’s collective consciousness.

Silvio Santos is survived by his six daughters—two from his first marriage, including one who was adopted, and four from his second marriage to Íris Passaro Abravanel. His legacy as a media pioneer and beloved television personality will undoubtedly endure for generations.

Comelec demonstrates new automated voting machine in Lucena City

LUCENA CITY, Quezon. Residents in Lucena City participated in a demonstration of the new automated voting machine that will be used in the upcoming May 12, 2025 midterm elections. The event, held at a local mall on Saturday, was led by Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chair George Erwin Garcia, who introduced the advanced features of the machine designed to enhance the voting process.

The new voting machine includes a smooth receptacle for the ballot, a wide touchscreen monitor for easy review of the votes cast, and a secure receptacle for the voter’s receipt. Unlike previous elections where ballot receipts were dropped into a box beside the counting machine, the new design aims to eliminate doubts regarding the accuracy of the vote count.

“We immediately addressed voters’ doubts whether their votes are counted because their receipts were just placed in the yellow box,” Garcia emphasized during the demonstration.

In addition to showcasing the new machine, Garcia urged deactivated voters to renew their registration. “Our records show that 5.2 million Filipinos were deactivated because they failed to vote during the 2022 elections and Barangay and SK (Sangguniang Kabataan) elections last year,” he said. Currently, Comelec has 52 million registered voters, with the deadline for registration set for September 30, with no plans for an extension.

Garcia also mentioned that Comelec is aiming to proclaim the winners within three to four days after the election. “Ang senador siguro, abutin kami three days. Dati rati dalawang linggo na ang Comelec, hindi pa nakakatapos sa pagbilang. Siguro three to four days, Napakahaba na nung apat na araw,” he explained. One of the challenges in the past has been the delayed crediting of overseas votes and the occurrence of election failures in certain areas, both of which contribute to the slow proclamation of winners.

The demonstration highlighted Comelec’s commitment to improving the electoral process and ensuring a smooth and efficient election in 2025.

Israeli airstrike in Gaza claims 17 Lives, including entire families

CAIRO. At least 17 Palestinians were killed and dozens wounded in an Israeli airstrike on the town of Zawayda in central Gaza on Saturday, according to health officials in the Hamas-administered enclave. The casualties included eight children and four women, all from the same family, highlighting the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict.

Abu Ahmed Hassan, a neighbor of the victims, described the tragedy: “They were asleep in their beds, kids and babies, then three missiles targeted their place.” He noted that the house’s owner was a known merchant and insisted, “There are no military activities here at all.”

The Israeli military confirmed it was investigating reports of the strike. Meanwhile, the military’s Arabic spokesperson issued evacuation orders on Saturday for parts of central Gaza, including the Maghazi district near Zawayda, instructing residents to move to designated humanitarian zones. The military claimed that militants had been firing rockets from these areas and that action was imminent.

However, it remains unclear whether Zawayda was included in the evacuation orders, as Reuters could not immediately verify this information. Residents reported thousands of people fleeing Maghazi.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that recent evacuation orders affected around 170,000 displaced people, shrinking the so-called “humanitarian area” to just 41 square kilometers, or about 11% of the total area of the Gaza Strip.

In the central part of Gaza, residents witnessed Israeli tanks advancing into the eastern area of Deir Al-Balah, a location previously uninvaded, where hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians are seeking shelter.

Since Friday, the Israeli military claimed to have killed dozens of militants, including some who had fired rockets from central and southern Gaza.

The conflict, which has displaced most of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, has been ongoing for 10 months. The Israeli military campaign was triggered by a Hamas attack on October 7, which killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and led to the taking of around 250 hostages, according to Israeli authorities. In response, Israel’s military actions have resulted in over 40,000 Palestinian deaths, most of them civilians, according to Gaza health officials. Israel has also lost 330 soldiers in the fighting and asserts that at least a third of the Palestinian casualties are militants.

Ceasefire Talks Stalled

Ceasefire negotiations in Doha, mediated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt, were paused on Friday, with talks set to resume next week. The goal is to reach an agreement to end the hostilities and secure the release of the remaining hostages.

U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized on Friday that no party in the Middle East should undermine efforts to reach a ceasefire and hostage release deal, warning that while a resolution is within sight, the negotiations are “far from over.”

Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri responded by dismissing reports of an imminent agreement as “deceptive claims.”

Movie Review: Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry star in a lackluster spy comedy, ‘The Union

“The Union” is an action comedy featuring Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry that should have been more engaging but ultimately falls flat. Despite its promising elements—star power and a substantial budget for international escapades—the film lacks the charm needed to stand out beyond being background noise on Netflix.

Streaming this Friday, “The Union” presents a fairy tale that’s very much a male fantasy. It follows Mike (Wahlberg), a middle-aged construction worker stuck in his small-town life in Patterson, New Jersey. His mundane existence is disrupted when his high school girlfriend, Roxanne (Berry), reappears. Roxanne, now a glamorous and confident figure, has clearly moved on from Patterson. The film kicks off with a “Mission: Impossible”-style mission gone awry in Trieste, Italy, leading to the deaths of most of her team.

The film, based on an idea by Stephen Levinson—Wahlberg’s longtime business partner who co-created “Spenser Confidential”—is directed by Julian Farino, known for his work on “Entourage”. The screenplay, crafted by Joe Barton and David Guggenheim, tries to weave a fantasy where anyone can become an international spy with a bit of training. Yet, “The Union” struggles to find its tonal balance. It doesn’t quite hit the mark as a comedy, even though it clearly aspires to be one.

J.K. Simmons, as the head of the secret agency, is underutilized, and other characters played by Jackie Earle Haley, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Alice Lee lack depth. One of the film’s modestly successful running jokes involves Mike’s undercover persona being from Boston, with a humorous nod to “Good Will Hunting.”

Wahlberg and Berry share an easy rapport but lack the chemistry needed for a convincing will-they-won’t-they romance. The film fails to make the audience believe that either character is still emotionally invested in their high school relationship. With so much life lived between then and now, it’s hard to buy into the idea that their past is still a significant factor.

Ultimately, “The Union” lacks sufficient action, comedy, romance, or artistry to fully engage viewers.

“The Union” streams on Netflix starting Friday and is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association for “sequences of strong violence, suggestive material, and some strong language.” The film runs for 107 minutes and receives one and a half stars out of four.

Inilipat ni Pangulong Marcos ang Ninoy Aquino Day sa Agosto 23

MAYNILA.
