Philippines reports China was ‘significantly’ alarmed by U.S. missile system deployment to its northern region

0

MANILA. The Philippines has sought to ease China’s concerns over a U.S. mid-range missile system recently deployed to its northern region, following what Manila described as Beijing’s “very dramatic” alarm. Chinese officials have warned that the presence of the missile system could destabilize the region, but the Philippine government insists that the deployment is temporary and poses no threat.

During a press conference in Manila, Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo revealed that his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, raised concerns about the U.S. missile system during discussions held last month in Laos, on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) meetings. “We discussed it and, well, they made it very dramatic,” Manalo stated. “I said you shouldn’t be worried.”

Pressed further about China’s specific concerns, Manalo shared that Wang Yi warned the missile system could be “destabilizing” for the region. However, Manalo assured Wang that the deployment was not permanent and emphasized, “They’re not destabilizing.”

The U.S. Army transported the mid-range missile system, capable of firing the Standard Missile-6 and the Tomahawk Land Attack Missile, to the northern Philippines in April as part of joint combat exercises with the Philippine military. Although the system was not used during the exercises, Philippine military officials have indicated that it may be withdrawn from the country next month.

China has repeatedly expressed strong opposition to the increased U.S. military presence in the region, particularly in the Philippines, warning that such moves could jeopardize regional peace and stability.

The U.S. and the Philippines have been vocal critics of China’s aggressive actions in asserting its territorial claims in the South China Sea. Tensions in the contested waters have escalated, with frequent confrontations between Chinese and Philippine coast guard vessels. The South China Sea is a crucial global trade route and a strategic area where overlapping claims involve China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan.

As the Philippines continues to navigate its complex relationship with both the U.S. and China, the government seeks to balance its security needs with the imperative to maintain regional stability.

Negotiations for a Gaza ceasefire set to resume as Israel issues new evacuation orders

DOHA. Negotiators reconvened in Qatar on Friday to discuss a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, in a bid to prevent further regional escalation and bring an end to the devastating conflict in Gaza. The ongoing war has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Palestinians and resulted in the captivity of Israeli hostages by Hamas.

The latest round of discussions began on Thursday and was set to resume after Friday noon prayers. Although Hamas is not directly participating in the talks, mediators are keeping the group informed of developments. “This is vital work. The remaining obstacles can be overcome, and we must bring this process to a close,” emphasized U.S. national security spokesperson John Kirby during a briefing at the White House.

Despite months of intermittent negotiations, key issues remain unresolved. Israel maintains that lasting peace is only achievable with the complete destruction of Hamas, while Hamas insists on a permanent, rather than temporary, ceasefire.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces intensified their bombardment of Gaza overnight, targeting areas previously designated as civilian safe zones. Israeli authorities claim that Hamas has been using these areas to launch mortar and rocket attacks. New evacuation orders have been issued, further displacing Gaza’s already beleaguered population.

The conflict, which began on October 7 with a deadly Hamas incursion into Israel, has led to the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis and the capture of around 250 hostages, according to Israeli reports. In response, Israel’s military campaign has devastated much of Gaza, killing over 40,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom were civilians, according to Palestinian health officials. Israel reports having eliminated 17,000 Hamas fighters during the campaign.

Hossam Badran, a member of the Hamas politburo, stated late Thursday that Israel’s ongoing military operations are impeding progress towards a ceasefire.

The Israeli delegation at the talks includes Mossad chief David Barnea, Shin Bet head Ronen Bar, and the military’s hostage affairs chief Nitzan Alon. The U.S. has dispatched CIA Director Bill Burns and Middle East envoy Brett McGurk, while Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Egypt’s intelligence chief Abbas Kamel are also actively involved in the negotiations.

The talks are taking place under the looming threat of a broader regional conflict, with Iran vowing retaliation against Israel following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31. The U.S. has deployed warships, submarines, and aircraft to the region to support Israel and deter potential aggressors. Washington hopes that a ceasefire agreement in Gaza will reduce the risk of a wider war.

In a separate development, Republican U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump revealed on Thursday that he had urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during their last meeting in July to swiftly conclude the Gaza conflict. “He knows what he’s doing, I did encourage him to get this over with,” Trump told reporters. “It has to get over with fast. … Get your victory and get it over with. It has to stop, the killing has to stop.”

However, both Netanyahu’s office and Trump denied reports that they had discussed Gaza ceasefire and hostage release negotiations the previous day, as claimed by Axios.

Amid the Gaza conflict, the White House also condemned attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinian civilians in the West Bank, stating that such actions are “unacceptable and must stop.” The statement followed reports of an attack on a Palestinian village by settlers, resulting in at least one fatality.

Madonna to celebrate 66th birthday with private tour of Pompeii’s ancient ruins

ROME. Madonna is set to celebrate her 66th birthday with a private evening tour of the historic archaeological site of Pompeii, according to local officials.

Naples Prefect Michele Di Bari dispelled rumors circulating in Italian media that the pop icon was planning an extravagant birthday party at the ancient site, which was famously destroyed in A.D. 79 by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Instead, Di Bari confirmed that Madonna’s visit on Friday will be a private, culturally focused event.

“She loves Pompeii, loves the archaeological park, and can’t wait to come,” Di Bari told reporters on Tuesday.

The archaeological park of Pompeii, a site of ongoing excavation, has revealed numerous treasures over the years, including exquisitely preserved frescoes and pottery. Just this week, new human remains were uncovered, adding to the rich historical narrative of the city.

Madonna, whose family roots trace back to Italy’s Abruzzo region, has been in Italy for several days. Reports suggest she is a guest of designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. On Tuesday evening, the pop star was spotted in Portofino, a Ligurian resort town, where she took an evening stroll dressed in black lace and carrying an umbrella. Later, she dined with her two daughters and entourage at the famous Puny Restaurant in Portofino’s main piazza.

Madonna recently concluded her “Celebration Tour” with a free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, marking the end of a tour that highlighted her decades-long career in the music industry.

An email to Madonna’s publicist seeking comment on the visit was not immediately returned.

People with ADHD are increasingly using AI apps for task management, but experts advise caution

NEW YORK. Struggling to manage the daily challenges of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), many individuals are now turning to artificial intelligence (AI) apps to help them stay organized and on task. Becky Litvintchouk, an entrepreneur from New York City, is one such person. Battling the overwhelming effects of ADHD, Litvintchouk credits AI tools like Claude for helping her navigate the complexities of her business, GetDirty, which produces hygienic wipes.

For Litvintchouk, AI has been a game-changer. “It’s been just massively instrumental. I probably would not be where I am today,” she shared, reflecting on her two-year experience with AI. The app Claude assists her in reviewing business contracts, allowing her to focus on the most critical aspects without having to read every word. She has also utilized generative AI to create detailed business plans by simply outlining her goals.

Experts Weigh In: A Helpful Tool, But Not a Replacement

While AI apps have proven beneficial for many people with ADHD, experts warn that they should be used with caution. Emily Kircher-Morris, a counselor specializing in neurodivergent patients, acknowledges the potential of these tools. “It really can help to hook people in, like, ‘Oh, this is kind of a fancy new thing that catches my interest. And so I really want to dig in and explore it,’” she noted. However, she also emphasizes the importance of not relying solely on AI.

John Mitchell, an associate professor at Duke University School of Medicine, echoes this sentiment. He advises that AI apps should be viewed as “one tool in a toolbox,” rather than a replacement for traditional treatments like developing organizational skills or taking prescribed medications. “If you’re kind of treading water in your job and AI’s a life preserver, well, that’s great you’re staying above water, but, you know, you still don’t know how to swim,” Mitchell explained.

AI Tools in Everyday Life

Beyond her business, Litvintchouk uses AI for everyday tasks that can be particularly challenging for people with ADHD, such as grocery shopping. She leverages ChatGPT to generate easy-to-make recipes along with corresponding shopping lists. Inspired by the benefits she’s experienced, Litvintchouk began sharing her tips on TikTok, creating videos to educate others about the AI tools that help her manage ADHD.

Generative AI tools like ChatGPT can break down large tasks into smaller, more manageable steps, and some apps offer specific advice that mimics human interaction. Bram de Buyser, a software engineer, developed Goblin.tools with neurodivergent users in mind. Its most popular feature, “magic to-do,” generates detailed to-do lists from a single task and can even break down items further into smaller steps. “I’m not trying to build a cure,” said de Buyser, “but something that helps them out (for) two minutes out of the day that they would otherwise struggle with.”

Potential Pitfalls: Bias, Privacy, and Overreliance

While AI tools offer numerous benefits, they are not without their drawbacks. Russell Fulmer, a professor at Husson University, describes the research around AI and ADHD as “inconclusive.” He warns that AI may not work equally well for everyone, citing instances of racist and biased chatbot responses.

Valese Jones, a publicist diagnosed with ADHD in childhood, uses AI to assist with tasks like reading and responding to emails. However, she finds that the AI responses don’t always capture her unique voice. “I’m southern, so I talk like a southerner. There are cadences in my writing where you can kind of pick up on the fact that I’m southern, and that’s on purpose,” said Jones, who is Black. “It doesn’t pick up on Black women’s tone.”

Privacy is another concern. As AI tools become more integrated into daily life, users must weigh the benefits against the potential risks of sharing personal information. De Buyser envisions a future where AI chatbots function more like personal assistants, but he warns of the implications. “If you say, ‘Oh, I want an AI that gives me personal information and checks my calendar,’ you are giving that big company access to your emails, your calendar, personal correspondence, essentially your deepest, darkest secrets just so it can give you something useful back,” he cautioned.

As AI continues to evolve, experts urge those with ADHD to approach these tools as helpful assistants rather than substitutes for traditional treatment methods.

Sa kanyang pahayag sa X (dating Twitter), sinabi niya na “I have never sought or accepted bribes from Smartmatic or any other entity.”

Judge warns Google of impending overhaul of Android app store as penalty for operating a monopoly

SAN FRANCISCO. U.S. District Judge James Donato signaled on Wednesday his intent to enforce substantial changes to the company’s Android app store as a consequence of a jury’s finding that Google operates an illegal monopoly. The ruling, handed down last December, concluded that Google’s Play Store exerted near-total control over the distribution of apps for Android phones and the associated billing systems, a practice that has reportedly harmed millions of consumers and app developers.

During a three-hour hearing in San Francisco, Judge Donato made it clear that his forthcoming order would likely include a mandate requiring the Play Store to offer users the option to download apps from alternative app stores. “We are going to tear the barriers down, that is going to happen,” Donato stated firmly to Google attorney Glenn Pomerantz. “When you have a mountain built out of bad conduct, you are going to have to move that mountain.”

Google has warned that allowing third-party app stores could lead to increased security risks for users, potentially causing “security chaos.” Despite these concerns, Judge Donato emphasized the necessity of a significant overhaul, even if it leads to considerable challenges for Google. The company has estimated that the cost of complying with the potential changes could reach up to $600 million.

The judge is expected to issue an order outlining the required changes within the coming weeks, possibly before Labor Day weekend. These changes are anticipated to serve as a precedent for another major antitrust case against Google, set to begin on September 6 in Washington, D.C. This case targets Google’s dominance in the search engine market, which has also been declared an illegal monopoly.

In the Play Store case, the timeline for Google to implement the required changes remains a key point of contention. While Google has requested 12 to 16 months to ensure a smooth transition, Epic Games, the video game company that filed the antitrust lawsuit, argues that the changes could be implemented in just three months at a cost of approximately $1 million. Judge Donato, however, expressed skepticism over Google’s timeline. “Google is telling me it will take eons for all of this to happen, but I am skeptical about it,” he remarked. “I am dubious that all that brainpower can’t solve these problems in less than 16 months.”

As for the duration of the judge’s order, Donato indicated that he is considering a five-year term, slightly less than the six years proposed by Epic Games, but longer than the one to two years suggested by Google.

Despite the impending shake-up, Judge Donato reassured Google that he would not attempt to micromanage its operations. “The whole point is to grow a garden of competitive app stores,” he explained, highlighting the importance of fostering a more competitive app marketplace.

Vatican expels founder of Peru’s Sodalitium religious movement following probe into abuse and corruption

0

ROME. The Vatican has expelled Luis Fernando Figari, the founder of the influential Peruvian religious movement Sodalitium Christianae Vitae, following a decade-long investigation into allegations of sexual and psychological abuse, as well as financial corruption.

The decision, authorized directly by Pope Francis, marks a significant step by the Catholic Church to address the long-standing scandal surrounding Figari and his community. Despite multiple investigations, including those led by the Vatican, the full extent of the movement’s issues had not been fully addressed until now.

The decree, issued by the Vatican’s department for religious orders and posted on the Peruvian bishops’ conference website, stated that Figari’s conduct was “incompatible and therefore unacceptable in a member of a church institution,” noting the significant harm caused to both the Church and its followers. The expulsion, the decree emphasized, was necessary to restore justice and protect the faithful.

Figari founded Sodalitium Christianae Vitae in 1971 as a lay community aimed at recruiting “soldiers for God.” The movement gained substantial influence, particularly in Peru, with approximately 20,000 members across South America and the United States at its peak.

The scandal began to unravel when victims of Figari’s abuse reported their experiences to the Lima archdiocese in 2011. However, some allegations date back as early as 2000. It wasn’t until 2015, when journalist Pedro Salinas, himself a victim, co-authored the book Half Monks, Half Soldiers with Paola Ugaz, that the twisted practices of the Sodalitium were brought to light.

An independent investigation commissioned by the Sodalitium in 2017 described Figari as “narcissistic, paranoid, demeaning, vulgar, vindictive, manipulative, racist, sexist, elitist, and obsessed with sexual issues.” The report detailed how Figari abused recruits, forcing them to engage in sexual acts and humiliating them to maintain control.

Despite the damning findings, the Vatican initially refrained from expelling Figari in 2017, instead ordering him to live separately from the Sodalitium community in Rome. At the time, Salinas criticized this as a “golden exile.”

However, on Wednesday, Salinas expressed relief at the Vatican’s decision to expel Figari, calling it “good news” and hoping it would lead to the eventual dismantling of what he described as a “mafia-like sect.”

The expulsion raises questions about the future of the Sodalitium, as religious movements are often closely tied to their founders’ vision and leadership. The group, however, sought to distance itself from Figari, stating that it had requested his expulsion as early as 2019 and was committed to a renewal process.

“Figari is the historical founder of the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae, but he is not a spiritual reference for our community,” said José David Correa González, the current superior of the movement. “We want to continue to work so that this gift may be at the service of the evangelizing mission of the church.”

This move by the Vatican follows another action earlier this year, when Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Piura Archbishop José Eguren, a Sodalitium member after he sued Salinas and Ugaz for their investigative reports on the Sodalitium.

Journalist Paola Ugaz described Figari’s expulsion as “paramount,” highlighting how it exposed the Peruvian church’s failure to address the victims’ complaints over the past two decades. She also noted the importance of journalism in bringing justice to the victims, expressing hope that this decision would lead to reparations for those harmed by Figari and his movement.

Trainee doctor’s rape and murder in India sparks nationwide protests and campus unrest

KOLKATA, India. The rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor in Kolkata has ignited widespread protests across India, leading to violent clashes at a medical college and demands for safer working conditions for healthcare professionals.

The victim, found dead last Friday, was reportedly assaulted and killed, with a police volunteer arrested in connection with the crime. Amid growing outrage, protesters claim the incident was a gang rape, and they believe more individuals were involved. Following a court order, the case has been handed over to federal investigators.

The tragic incident has triggered a wave of unrest, with scores of people storming the R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata on Wednesday night. The attackers ransacked patient wards, damaged vehicles, and engaged in a violent confrontation with police. Several officers were injured, and tear gas was used to disperse the crowd. While authorities have not identified those responsible for the rampage, the situation underscores the rising tensions surrounding the case.

Government hospitals across several Indian cities have suspended medical services, excluding emergency departments, as healthcare workers join the protests demanding justice for the victim and improved safety measures.

The crime highlights the ongoing issue of sexual violence in India, where, according to the National Crime Records Bureau, police recorded 31,516 reports of rape in 2022—a 20% increase from the previous year. However, many cases go unreported due to the stigma surrounding sexual violence and a lack of trust in law enforcement, especially in rural areas where victims often face community shame and concerns over social standing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Thursday, condemning the rise in atrocities against women. “There is outrage against this in the country. I can feel this outrage,” Modi said during his speech on India’s 78th Independence Day.

West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose visited R.G. Kar Medical College on Thursday to assess the situation, while opposition leader Rahul Gandhi of the Congress party criticized state officials, accusing them of attempting to shield the suspects rather than ensuring they face justice.

This case has drawn comparisons to the infamous 2012 gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old student on a New Delhi bus, which sparked massive protests and led to stricter penalties for sexual violence, including the establishment of fast-track courts for rape cases. Despite the legal reforms, rights activists argue that the government still falls short in protecting women and holding perpetrators accountable.

As protests continue to escalate, the country watches closely, demanding swift justice and meaningful change to prevent further tragedies.

“We actually filed the complaint for murder, two counts. That’s for the death of Yitshak Cohen and Geneva Lopez. And the complaint has been docketed already,” ayon kay Valmonte. “And there are five respondents that are impleaded in the complaint,” dagdag pa niya.
