Families of Brazilian plane crash victims gather in São Paulo as identification efforts continue

0

São Paulo, Brazil. Families of the 62 victims of a tragic plane crash gathered in São Paulo on Sunday as forensics experts continued their work to identify the deceased. The ATR 72 aircraft operated by Brazilian airline Voepass crashed on Friday, and the recovery and identification process has been underway since.

The São Paulo morgue has identified the bodies of pilot Danilo Santos Romano and co-pilot Humberto de Campos Alencar e Silva as the first victims. Additionally, Brazilian media reports that four more victims have been identified, though the morgue has yet to confirm these reports.

According to the São Paulo state government, the search operation concluded at 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, 33 hours after the crash. All 34 male and 28 female victims have been recovered from the crash site, though the wreckage remains at the location for ongoing investigation.

The Voepass ATR 72, en route to São Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport, crashed in Vinhedo, approximately 78 kilometers (49 miles) from the city. The aircraft was carrying 58 passengers and four crew members. Voepass reported that three passengers held Brazilian identification, with one also having Venezuelan documents and another holding Portuguese nationality.

The tragic event included notable victims such as four professors from Unioeste University in Paraná and at least eight physicians. Three-year-old Liz Ibba dos Santos, traveling with her father, was the only child on board. The remains of Luna, a dog traveling with a Venezuelan family, were also recovered.

As the morgue began receiving bodies on Friday evening, relatives were requested to provide medical, X-ray, and dental records to aid in the identification process. Blood tests were also conducted to assist in this effort.

On social media, Tânia Azevedo, who lost her son Tiago in the crash, shared her emotional struggle: “I believe Tiago is somewhere trying to help the other people wounded who also need light and love,” she wrote. “I couldn’t go there (to the morgue). I am here waiting. It is dark here, I need some light and love myself.”

Witnesses captured the aircraft in a flat spin before it crashed into a gated community, leaving the fuselage in ruins and engulfed in flames. There were no reported injuries on the ground.

This crash is the deadliest airline disaster globally since January 2023, when a Yeti Airlines ATR 72 crash in Nepal resulted in 72 fatalities. Both incidents involve the ATR 72 model, with previous investigations attributing pilot error to the Nepal crash.

Meteorological company Metsul reported severe icing conditions in São Paulo around the time of the crash. Local media have suggested icing could be a contributing factor, though this is yet to be confirmed.

A video shared on social media featured a Voepass pilot reflecting on the tragedy, emphasizing respect and prayers for those affected: “This tragedy doesn’t hit only those who perished in this accident. It hits all of us,” said the pilot. “We are giving all our hearts, all our best to be here and fulfill our mission to take you safely and comfortably to your destination.”

Access to the São Paulo morgue was restricted, with police preventing media coverage of the grieving families. A flight from Paraná brought more relatives to the scene on Saturday afternoon, with transportation provided by the airline.

The Brazilian Air Force has sent the plane’s flight recorders to its laboratory in Brasília for analysis, with results expected within 30 days. Marcelo Moura, Voepass’s director of operations, mentioned that while ice conditions were forecasted, they were deemed acceptable for the aircraft.

Brazilian aviation expert Lito Sousa cautioned against drawing premature conclusions based solely on images. “Analyzing an air crash just with images can lead to wrong conclusions about the causes,” Sousa told The Associated Press. “But we can see a plane with loss of support, no horizontal speed. In this flat spin condition, there’s no way to reclaim control of the plane.”

The ATR 72, a model manufactured by a joint venture between Airbus and Leonardo SpA, has been involved in numerous accidents, resulting in 470 deaths according to the Aviation Safety Network database.

The São Paulo morgue has identified the bodies of pilot Danilo Santos Romano and co-pilot Humberto de Campos Alencar e Silva as the first victims.

Israel expands Gaza evacuations after deadly school shelter attack

CAIRO. Israel has issued expanded evacuation orders in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, forcing tens of thousands of Palestinian residents and displaced families to flee under the cover of darkness amidst ongoing explosions from tank shelling.

The Israeli military stated that the evacuations are aimed at targeting Hamas militants, who allegedly use these areas to launch attacks and fire rockets. However, the expanded evacuations come on the heels of a devastating Israeli airstrike on a school in Gaza City, where displaced Palestinians were taking refuge. The attack, which the Israeli military claims targeted a Hamas and Islamic Jihad command post, resulted in at least 90 fatalities, according to Gaza’s civil defense service. Both Hamas and Islamic Jihad have dismissed this claim, accusing Israel of using it as a pretext for the strike.

The evacuation order, which includes districts in the center, east, and west of Khan Younis, is one of the largest of the ongoing conflict, which has now lasted 10 months. Residents received evacuation instructions via X (formerly Twitter) and text messages: “For your own safety, you must evacuate immediately to the newly created humanitarian zone. The area you are in is considered a dangerous combat zone.”

Philippe Lazzarini, head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), expressed grave concern about the dire conditions faced by those displaced: “Some are only able to carry their children with them, some carry their whole lives in one small bag. They are going to overcrowded places where shelters are already overflowing with families. They have lost everything and need everything,” he said.

In the past 24 hours, the Israeli army reported striking around 30 Hamas military targets, including military structures, anti-tank missile launch posts, and weapons storage facilities. The Islamic Jihad armed wing responded with mortar attacks against Israeli forces in eastern Khan Younis.

Later on Sunday, an Israeli airstrike near the Khan Younis market killed four Palestinians and injured several others, according to medics. Witnesses reported seeing smoke rising from attacks in both the eastern and western parts of the city, with two multi-floor buildings among those destroyed.

The Gaza health ministry reports that nearly 40,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began last October, with the death toll continuing to rise. Israeli authorities have claimed that at least a third of those killed are fighters, while Gaza officials state that most fatalities are civilians. Israel has also reported 329 soldiers killed in the conflict.

Following a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and over 250 hostages, Israel initiated its assault on Gaza.

The United Nations estimates that most of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been displaced, with the territory largely reduced to rubble. Officials from Palestine and the UN report that no areas in the enclave are truly safe. Humanitarian zones like Al-Mawasi, where many evacuees are directed, have also been targeted by Israeli forces.

Zaki Mohammad, a resident of the Hamad housing project in Khan Younis, described the dire situation: “We’re exhausted. This is the 10th time I and my family have had to leave our shelter. People are carrying their belongings, their children, their hopes and their fears and running towards the unknown, because there is no safe place. We are running from death to death.”

Philippine military condemns Chinese jets for endangering patrol planes with dangerous maneuvers

0

MANILA. The Philippine military has condemned provocative actions by two Chinese air force jets that endangered a Philippine Air Force patrol plane in the South China Sea. The incident occurred on Thursday morning over Scarborough Shoal, resulting in no injuries but raising significant concerns.

According to Gen. Romeo Brawner, the Philippine Air Force NC-212i light transport plane safely returned to Clark Air Base north of Manila after the incident. The military chief did not disclose further details but emphasized that all personnel aboard were unharmed.

A senior Philippine security official, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, reported that the Chinese jets flew dangerously close to the Philippine aircraft and deployed at least eight flares. “The Chinese jets flew at a very close distance to our plane and put the lives of our pilots in real risk and danger,” the official said.

In response, the Southern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army claimed that the Philippine aircraft had “illegally” entered airspace above Huangyan Island—China’s name for Scarborough Shoal—and disrupted their training exercises. The Chinese command stated that their jets and ships were deployed to “identify, track and drive away” the Philippine aircraft. “The on-site operation was professional, standardized, legitimate and justified,” the command added, emphasizing that their forces remained “on high alert” to defend China’s national sovereignty.

The command also warned the Philippines to “stop its infringement, provocation, distortion, and hyping-up” of the incident.

Gen. Brawner responded by stating that the incident “posed a threat to Philippine Air Force aircraft and its crew,” interfered with lawful operations within Philippine airspace, and contravened international aviation laws. The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs has been informed and has filed several diplomatic protests against China’s aggressive actions in the region.

Brawner reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to continue patrols in the contested waters, asserting, “We reaffirm our commitment to exercise our rights in accordance with international law.”

The South China Sea is a strategically vital area with overlapping territorial claims from Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Thailand, and particularly tense disputes between China and the Philippines. The U.S. military has previously reported similar dangerous maneuvers by Chinese aircraft and has deployed forces to promote freedom of navigation. The U.S. has also reiterated its obligation to defend the Philippines if attacked, including in the South China Sea.

This latest incident underscores the ongoing tensions in the region and the risks faced by military and civilian aircraft operating in contested airspace.

Mars and Jupiter align for rare close encounter; won’t reunite this closely until 2033

0

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. Mars and Jupiter will align in the night sky for their closest conjunction of the decade this Wednesday, offering a stunning celestial display. The two planets will appear so close that, from our perspective, only a sliver of the moon could fit between them, despite being over 350 million miles (575 million kilometers) apart in their orbits.

The alignment, known as a planetary conjunction, will reach its minimum separation of one-third of a degree — roughly one-third the width of the moon — during daylight hours on Wednesday in most of the Americas, Europe, and Africa. However, the planets will still appear closely aligned hours before or after this peak, said Jon Giorgini from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California.

The best viewing opportunities will be in the eastern sky, towards the constellation Taurus, before dawn. These rare events occur approximately every three years, offering both a visual spectacle and a chance to test astronomical predictions, according to Giorgini. “Such events are mostly items of curiosity and beauty for those watching the sky, wondering what the two bright objects so close together might be,” he noted. “The science is in the ability to accurately predict the events years in advance.”

Mars and Jupiter haven’t been this close since 2018 and won’t align this closely again until 2033, when they will come even closer. The closest such event in the past 1,000 years occurred in 1761 when the two planets appeared as a single bright object to the naked eye. The next nearly as close alignment will occur in 2348.

This conjunction of Mars and Jupiter coincides with the Perseid meteor shower, one of the year’s most brilliant meteor showers, adding to the celestial excitement. No binoculars or telescopes are needed to enjoy this spectacular sight.

Brazilian authorities probe fatal plane crash that killed 62 people

0

VINHEDO, Brazil. Brazilian authorities are intensifying their investigation into the plane crash that claimed the lives of all 62 people aboard on Friday. The crash involved a Voepass ATR 72 twin-engine turboprop, which went down en route to São Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport.

The aircraft, carrying 58 passengers and 4 crew members, crashed in the city of Vinhedo. Initial reports from the airline listed 62 passengers. Still, this number was revised to 61 before being updated to 62 again after discovering that passenger Constantino Thé Maia was missing from the original list.

Witnesses captured footage of the plane in a flat spin, descending vertically before crashing inside a gated community. The impact caused a significant fire that consumed the fuselage. Fortunately, local residents reported no injuries on the ground.

As recovery operations continued amid the winter chill, São Paulo Public Security Secretary Guilherme Derrite confirmed that the plane’s black box had been recovered in a seemingly intact condition.

“This incident is the deadliest airline crash worldwide since January 2023,” said Brazilian aviation expert Lito Sousa. He cautioned against drawing premature conclusions solely from visual evidence. “Analyzing an air crash just with images can lead to wrong conclusions about the causes,” Sousa told the AP. “But we can see a plane with loss of support, no horizontal speed. In this flat spin condition, there’s no way to reclaim control of the plane.”

Marcelo Moura, Voepass’s director of operations, noted that while there were forecasts for ice, they were within the aircraft’s operational limits. Lt. Col. Carlos Henrique Baldi of the Brazilian Air Force’s accident investigation center indicated that it is too early to determine if ice played a role. “The plane is certified in several countries to fly in severe icing conditions,” he said.

The Brazilian Federal Police have initiated their own investigation, focusing on crash dynamics and victim identification. The São Paulo state government reported that 21 bodies have been recovered, with two already identified.

ATR, the French-Italian manufacturer of the ATR 72-500 model involved in the crash, has pledged full support for the investigation. The ATR 72, commonly used for shorter flights, has been involved in 470 fatalities since the 1990s, according to the Aviation Safety Network.

The air force’s center will also conduct a criminal probe to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the accident. Ports and Airports Minister Silvio Costa Filho stated, “We will investigate so this case is fully explained to the Brazilian people.”

Deadly Israeli airstrike hits Gaza school shelter, claims around 100 lives

CAIRO. An Israeli airstrike targeting a Gaza school compound housing displaced families resulted in the deaths of approximately 100 individuals, according to the Hamas-run Gaza government. The Israeli military, however, contested this figure, stating that the strike was aimed at Hamas militants.

The attack occurred at the Tabeen school complex in Gaza City during dawn prayers. Videos from the scene revealed disturbing images of body parts scattered on the ground, with burnt mattresses and a child’s doll among the debris. In one video, men prayed over a dozen body bags laid out on the ground. The exact location of the footage within the school complex was not immediately clear.

Gaza’s Civil Defence spokesperson, Mahmoud Bassal, reported at a press conference that the complex was struck during morning prayers, resulting in “more than 93 martyrs, including 11 children and six women,” with additional unidentified remains. The complex had been sheltering around 350 families displaced by the ongoing conflict. The Gaza health ministry has yet to provide detailed casualty figures.

The Israeli military claimed that the school compound, including the mosque within it, was being used as a military facility by Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani stated on X that the Palestinian death toll was exaggerated, asserting that around 20 militants were present at the site. “The compound, and the mosque that was struck within it, served as an active Hamas and Islamic Jihad military facility,” Shoshani said. He added that the strike involved “three small, precise munitions” and questioned the accuracy of the reported casualty figures.

Hamas condemned the strike as a severe escalation and a “horrific crime,” with Izzat El-Reshiq from Hamas’ political office asserting that none of the deceased were combatants. The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, expressed horror at the images from the site. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ spokesperson, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, called on the U.S. to end its “blind support” for Israel, which he claimed has led to numerous civilian casualties.

Several nations, including Egypt, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, condemned the airstrike. Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri indicated that the attack should prompt renewed efforts to resume ceasefire talks. Egypt and Qatar, along with the U.S., have scheduled new ceasefire negotiations for Thursday amidst rising concerns about a broader conflict involving Iran and Hezbollah.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed not to end the war until Hamas is no longer a threat, following an attack by Hamas fighters on southern Israel on October 7 that resulted in 1,200 deaths and over 250 hostages. Since the onset of the Israeli offensive, nearly 40,000 Palestinians have been reported killed, according to Gaza’s health ministry, which does not differentiate between combatants and civilians. Israel reports that at least a third of the fatalities are fighters, while it has lost 329 soldiers.

Iraqi teen detained in Vienna following foiled Taylor Swift attack plot

BERLIN. An 18-year-old Iraqi national has been detained in Vienna amid investigations into a thwarted plot to attack a Taylor Swift concert in the Austrian capital, Austria’s Interior Minister Gerhard Karner confirmed on Friday.

The detained Iraqi, who is linked to the primary suspect—a 19-year-old Austrian of North Macedonian descent—reportedly swore allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group on August 6. However, Karner stated that it remains unclear whether the Iraqi suspect had a direct role in the planned attack.

Further investigations are underway, with additional suspects to be questioned and properties to be searched. The primary suspect, who also pledged allegiance to IS, had intended to carry out a fatal assault at the Ernst Happel Stadium, where an estimated 20,000 fans were expected for Taylor Swift’s concerts. This security threat led to the cancellation of all three scheduled performances.

The 19-year-old suspect, who resigned from his job less than two weeks prior to the attack, has reportedly confessed fully to authorities. Alongside him, two other Austrian youths aged 17 and 15 were detained on Wednesday. The 17-year-old, who was employed by a company providing services at the stadium, has so far refused to cooperate, while the 15-year-old remains under intense questioning by police.

According to Karner, Austrian authorities received information about the threat from U.S. intelligence, as Austrian law does not permit the monitoring of instant messaging apps used by the suspects for communication.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer emphasized the importance of international cooperation: “Cooperation with foreign partners and services is essential and reciprocal. This made it possible to prevent a tragedy in Vienna.”

Taylor Swift, whose next concert is scheduled in London next week, has not publicly commented on the cancellation of the Vienna shows. British police have stated that there is no indication the Vienna plot poses any threat to the London performance.
