Movie review: ‘Dìdi’ – A heartfelt nostalgia trip to 2008

Coming-of-age films have long explored the trials and tribulations of adolescence, but few manage to weave together humor, emotional depth, and the unique experience of an immigrant family quite like Dìdi. Directed, written, and produced by Sean Wang, this semi-autobiographical debut offers a warm, nostalgic embrace of the summer of 2008, capturing the essence of a Taiwanese American teenager’s life in Fremont, California.

The film centers on 13-year-old Chris Wang, affectionately known as “Wang Wang” to his friends and “Dìdi” to his family. Set against the backdrop of flip phones, instant messaging, and Myspace, Dìdi immerses viewers in a period that feels both familiar and refreshingly retro.

At its heart, the film portrays Chris’s journey through the trials of adolescence—dealing with his first crush, navigating friendships, and the typical teenage angst. Joan Chen delivers a standout performance as Chris’s mother, embodying the role with a mix of warmth and exasperation that resonates deeply. Despite Chris’s teenage tendency to find her “unbearably irritating,” it’s clear she remains his most steadfast supporter.

Sean Wang’s storytelling excels in balancing heartfelt moments with humor. His portrayal of Chris’s awkward attempts to navigate young love—such as Googling “how to kiss” and seeking advice on responding to his crush’s IMs—delivers both comedic relief and authentic teenage experience.

Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, Dìdi garnered acclaim for its nostalgic portrayal of the late 2000s and won the Audience Award and a Special Jury Award for its ensemble cast. The film’s authenticity is amplified by Wang’s choice of first-time actors for the teen roles, whose performances add a layer of genuine realism. Remarkably, the young cast members closely resemble actual 13-year-olds, differing from the often older actors cast in similar roles.

The film’s nostalgia is heightened by Wang’s personal touch; much of the story is drawn from his own childhood, and filming took place in his hometown. Wang even cast his 86-year-old grandmother in the role of Nai Nai, bringing an endearing authenticity to the character.

A poignant scene features Chris filming his grandmother for his YouTube hobby. When she comments on her appearance, Chris reassures her of her beauty, and they share a touching exchange of “I love yous.” This moment underscores the film’s core message: beneath the turbulence of growing up, Chris is still a young boy with deep affection for his family.

Dìdi shines in its ability to balance levity with emotional weight, often transitioning from laughter to tears in mere moments. The film beautifully captures the process of recognizing and appreciating familial bonds, particularly as Chris grows and matures.

In summary, Dìdi invites viewers to reminisce about their own adolescent years and cherish the moments spent with loved ones.

Dìdi, a Focus Features release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association for “language throughout, sexual material, and drug and alcohol use—all involving teens.” The film runs for 93 minutes and earns three and a half stars out of four.

One dead, dozens hospitalized after eating grilled eel from Tokyo department store

TOKYO. A food poisoning incident linked to grilled eel from a department store near Tokyo has resulted in one death and nearly 150 illnesses, with two individuals requiring hospitalization, officials reported.

The affected customers had purchased grilled eel dishes from the Keikyu Department Store in Yokohama between July 24 and July 25. The eel, prepared by the Tokyo-based restaurant chain Nihonbashi Isesada, was sold in the grocery section and as part of box lunches. The department store confirmed that over 1,700 servings of the grilled eel were sold during this period.

The Yokohama City Health Center reported that 147 individuals experienced symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea. The deceased, a woman in her 90s, developed these symptoms before her death. Her exact cause of death remains under investigation. The health center identified staphylococcus aureus, a bacterium responsible for food poisoning, in samples from the affected individuals.

The department store and Isesada have both issued apologies for the incident. Soichiro Tomita, an executive at Isesada, admitted during a televised news conference that some cooks had not been wearing plastic gloves, which may have contributed to the contamination.

In response to the outbreak, the health center has temporarily closed the Isesada shop located in the grocery section, as well as its restaurant, while a thorough investigation into the cause of the food poisoning is conducted. Both Keikyu Department Store and Nihonbashi Isesada have pledged full cooperation with health officials as they work to prevent further incidents.

State of calamity idineklara sa 8 bayan sa Cavite dahil sa malawakang oil spill

CAVITE CITY.

“As of today, the province is declaring a state of calamity in these areas,” dagdag pa ni Remulla.

Landslides in Kerala claim 106 lives with many still trapped

0

Kochi, India. A series of landslides triggered by intense rainfall has resulted in the death of at least 106 people in Kerala, southern India. The calamity struck during the night, collapsing hillsides and causing torrents of mud and debris to bury homes and tea estates.

The landslides, which occurred after midnight on Tuesday, devastated the Wayanad district, a popular tourist area in Kerala. Many of the victims were tea estate workers and their families, residing in small houses or makeshift shelters.

Television footage depicted a chaotic rescue operation, with workers navigating through uprooted trees, debris-strewn hillsides, and rushing water. “There are still people who are trapped under the ground and those who have been swept away,” Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said. He assured that “the rescue operation will continue with all possible strength and means.”

As of Tuesday, at least 128 people were injured and dozens remained unaccounted for. Local sources, including Asianet TV, reported a higher death toll of 119. The recent landslides represent the worst disaster in Kerala since the devastating floods of 2018, which claimed nearly 400 lives.

Chief Minister Vijayan reported that over 3,000 people had been evacuated and relocated to 45 relief camps. The rescue efforts involved hundreds of personnel, including army soldiers, using drones and sniffer dogs to search for survivors.

A survivor, identified only as Vijayan, recounted his harrowing experience: “I woke up in the middle of the night to feel the ground shake and see electric poles fall. A couple of neighbors and I ran to nearby houses where we heard cries for help and took some of the injured to safety.” Tragically, he described losing his family members to the landslide: “I clung to a window bar as I saw my mother and sister disappear under the mud; I couldn’t do anything.”

In response to the destruction, army engineers have been deployed to reconstruct a bridge that linked the affected area to Chooralmala. Chief Secretary V. Venu reported, “A small team has managed to cross the bridge across the river and reach the site, but we will need to send many more to provide help and start rescue operations.”

A military helicopter has also been dispatched to Mundakkai, one of the hardest-hit areas, where approximately 250 people were stranded on a hilltop and at a tourist resort without adequate supplies. This intervention is expected to accelerate rescue efforts.

Chief Minister Vijayan highlighted the impact of climate change, noting that the region received 572 millimeters (22.5 inches) of rain instead of the forecasted 204 millimeters (8 inches) over 48 hours. “Rainfall and other natural disasters are sometimes unpredictable,” he warned.

With additional rainfall expected over the next five days, Vijayan urged residents to take necessary precautions. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, who recently won a seat in Wayanad, expressed his condolences and called for comprehensive support from the union government: “The devastation unfolding in Wayanad is heartbreaking. I have urged the union government to extend all possible support.”

The tragic events underscore the urgent need for effective disaster preparedness and response strategies in the face of increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.

Who was Ismail Haniyeh and why was his death a significant loss for Hamas?

DUBAI. The assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the prominent Hamas leader killed in Iran, marks a significant blow to the militant group, shaking its international diplomatic efforts amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Haniyeh, who had been a key figure in Hamas since his appointment as its leader in 2017, was known for his role as the face of the group’s diplomatic outreach. Despite the intense rhetoric, many diplomats regarded him as a relative moderate compared to more hardline factions within Hamas, which is supported by Iran.

Operating primarily from Turkey and Qatar, Haniyeh managed to navigate around the Gaza Strip’s blockades, enabling him to engage in crucial negotiations and communicate with allies like Iran. His public statements often reflected his role as a negotiator. For instance, following the October 7 raid by Hamas fighters that resulted in significant casualties and hostages, Haniyeh declared on Al Jazeera, “All the agreements of normalization that you (Arab states) signed with (Israel) will not end this conflict.”

The ongoing conflict has seen a devastating response from Israel, including a military campaign that has caused substantial loss of life and destruction in Gaza. Haniyeh’s sons—Hazem, Amir, and Mohammad—were among those killed in an Israeli airstrike in April. Haniyeh also lost four grandchildren in the same attack. Despite these personal losses, he continued to emphasize the broader struggle, asserting that “the interests of the Palestinian people are placed ahead of everything.”

Haniyeh’s leadership in Gaza involved efforts to engage in ceasefire talks and seek aid for the region. His death is seen as a severe setback for Hamas, particularly as it comes amidst accusations of war crimes and the broader struggle between Israel and the Palestinian group. The International Criminal Court had requested arrest warrants for Haniyeh, along with other Hamas leaders, in connection with alleged war crimes, though these allegations have been dismissed by Israel and Palestinian leaders.

While Haniyeh’s leadership was marked by his efforts to maintain diplomatic channels and negotiate truce deals, his assassination could significantly impact Hamas’ ability to continue these efforts. His death could also influence ongoing ceasefire negotiations and the broader regional dynamics involving Hamas and its allies, including Iran and Hezbollah.

A former student activist and protégé of Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, Haniyeh was instrumental in the group’s political strategy, including its entry into the political sphere and subsequent control of Gaza. His leadership was characterized by a blend of political pragmatism and uncompromising resistance.

As the situation develops, the repercussions of Haniyeh’s assassination will likely be felt across the region, impacting Hamas’ strategies and the broader Middle Eastern geopolitical landscape.

Mag-live-in partner, dinukot sa Rizal

0

CAINTA, Rizal.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh is killed in Iran by suspected Israeli strike, threatening escalation

BEIRUT. Ismail Haniyeh, a prominent leader of Hamas, was killed early Wednesday by an airstrike in Tehran, according to Iranian and Hamas sources. This attack, attributed to Israel, comes at a time of heightened regional volatility and threatens to inflame the ongoing conflicts further.

The assassination occurred just after Haniyeh attended the inauguration of Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, in Tehran. The timing is significant, as it follows a recent Israeli strike on a top Hezbollah commander in Beirut, which was allegedly in response to a rocket attack on Israeli-controlled Golan Heights that killed 12 people.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, vowed retaliation, stating, “We consider his revenge as our duty” and accusing Israel of preparing “a harsh punishment for itself” by killing “a dear guest in our home.” This statement underscores the potential for significant escalation between Iran and Israel.

The Israeli government has yet to comment officially on Haniyeh’s killing. However, the assassination comes amidst Israel’s broader campaign against Hamas leaders, following their October 7 attack on southern Israel. Haniyeh, who had been living in exile in Qatar since 2019, was targeted in what is seen as a highly sensitive operation due to its location in Tehran.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, speaking in Singapore, stated, “This is something we were not aware of or involved in,” and emphasized the continued importance of pursuing a cease-fire. U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin also expressed hope for a diplomatic resolution, stating, “I don’t think that war is inevitable.”

The killing of Haniyeh could jeopardize ongoing negotiations for a cease-fire and hostage release in the Gaza conflict, which had seen some progress. It also risks inflaming tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, potentially pushing the region toward broader conflict.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has warned of a “harsh and painful response” and an emergency meeting of Iran’s parliamentary committee on national security and foreign policy was convened to address the situation. The impact of Haniyeh’s death might extend beyond direct retaliation, possibly provoking increased aggression from Iran’s allies, including Hezbollah and other militant groups within the “Axis of Resistance.”

The strike also highlights Israel’s history of targeting key figures in the region, reminiscent of its past operations against Iranian nuclear scientists. As the situation unfolds, the international community remains concerned about the potential for a devastating regional war.

Paris Olympics men’s triathlon postponed due to Seine water quality concerns

PARIS. The men’s triathlon at the Paris 2024 Olympics has been postponed due to concerns over the water quality in the Seine River, organizers announced on Tuesday. The rescheduling aims to address contamination issues, with the event now set to take place on Wednesday, pending satisfactory water test results.

The decision comes as Paris officials grapple with fluctuating bacteria levels in the Seine, which have been impacted by recent weather conditions. The city has invested 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in improving water quality to facilitate swimming events in the river. However, despite these efforts, E. coli levels remain a concern.

Paris Deputy Mayor Pierre Rabadan noted that while “the trend is improving,” current readings still exceed acceptable limits. “Despite the improvement on the water quality levels in the last hours, the readings at some points of the swim course are still above the acceptable limits,” organizers said. “Our priority is the health of the athletes.”

The postponement follows a meeting involving World Triathlon, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and city officials. The men’s triathlon is now scheduled to start at 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, while the women’s triathlon, also scheduled for that day, will proceed only if water quality tests are favorable. Friday has been designated as a backup date for both events.

The delay has been influenced by recent weather patterns, including heavy rain during the Olympic opening ceremony on Friday and continuing storms through the week. Rain generally exacerbates contamination levels in the Seine, complicating the efforts to ensure a safe environment for the athletes.

Aurélie Merle, Paris 2024 Director of Sports, expressed frustration over the situation but emphasized ongoing commitment to the project. “There are unfortunate meteorological events outside of our control,” Merle said. “But otherwise the project is still very strong. When we see the impact on the quality and the legacy that we can leave also to the Parisians, we all feel extremely proud of what we’ve done so far.”

Water quality tests have shown varying E. coli levels at different points along the course, with some readings reaching 1,553 colony-forming units per 100 milliliters, well above the European safety threshold of 900 units. E. coli contamination can pose health risks, including gastrointestinal infections and other illnesses.

Efforts to improve water quality have included constructing a giant basin to capture excess rainwater and prevent wastewater from entering the Seine, as well as upgrading sewer infrastructure and treatment facilities.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo recently demonstrated confidence in the water quality by swimming in the river with other officials, though subsequent data indicated that E. coli levels were slightly above the acceptable limit at that time.

The rescheduled men’s triathlon and the women’s triathlon, if held on Wednesday, will face additional challenges from the anticipated heat, which may impact the events’ conclusion. Future events in the Seine include the mixed relay triathlon on August 5 and the marathon swimming events on August 8 and 9.

Taylor Swift ‘in shock’ as fatal stabbing at UK dance class claims three young lives

LONDON. Taylor Swift expressed her profound shock and grief following a tragic stabbing attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga class in Southport, northwestern England, which resulted in the deaths of three young girls. The latest victim, a 9-year-old girl, succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, with the other fatalities being girls aged 6 and 7.

The attack, which occurred just before noon on Monday, left eight children and two adults hospitalized, with both adults and five of the children in critical condition. A 17-year-old suspect, arrested minutes after the incident, faces charges of murder and attempted murder. The suspect, originally from Cardiff, Wales, has not yet been formally charged.

Swift took to Instagram to express her devastation, stating, “I am completely in shock and still taking in the horror of what happened. These were just little kids at a dance class. I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”

Local residents have paid tribute by leaving flowers and stuffed animals at a police cordon in the seaside resort, known for its beach and pier that attract vacationers. Witnesses described the scene as “from a horror movie,” with children covered in blood fleeing the community center, Hart Space, where the workshop was held.

Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy stated, “We believe the adults who were injured were bravely trying to protect the children who were being attacked.” The police have clarified that the attack is not being treated as terror-related and are not seeking any additional suspects.

The attack has intensified concerns over rising knife crime in the UK, where such incidents have sparked calls for stricter controls on bladed weapons. The tragic event is reminiscent of the country’s worst attack on children, the Dunblane massacre of 1996, which led to a ban on private handgun ownership.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the attack “horrendous and deeply shocking,” while King Charles III conveyed his “condolences, prayers and deepest sympathies” to those affected. Prince William and his wife Catherine also expressed their sorrow, saying, “As parents, we cannot begin to imagine what the families, friends, and loved ones of those killed and injured in Southport today are going through.”

Colin Parry, who witnessed the suspect arriving by taxi, described the scene as “like something from America, not like sunny Southport,” adding that many of the victims appeared to be young girls. The suspect reportedly reacted aggressively when confronted about not paying for his taxi.

Recent years have seen a rise in mass stabbings in the UK, contributing to growing fears and outrage over violent attacks. Notable incidents include a fatal stabbing in London in April 2023, an attack in Nottingham in June 2022, and a deadly assault in Reading in June 2020.

Authorities continue to investigate the attack and coordinate rescue and support efforts for the affected families and community.

“There would also be an additional P10,000 cash gift for all Filipinos aged 80, 85, 90, and 95,” ayon sa Pangulo.
