Paris Olympics men’s triathlon postponed due to Seine water quality concerns

PARIS. The men’s triathlon at the Paris 2024 Olympics has been postponed due to concerns over the water quality in the Seine River, organizers announced on Tuesday. The rescheduling aims to address contamination issues, with the event now set to take place on Wednesday, pending satisfactory water test results.

The decision comes as Paris officials grapple with fluctuating bacteria levels in the Seine, which have been impacted by recent weather conditions. The city has invested 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in improving water quality to facilitate swimming events in the river. However, despite these efforts, E. coli levels remain a concern.

Paris Deputy Mayor Pierre Rabadan noted that while “the trend is improving,” current readings still exceed acceptable limits. “Despite the improvement on the water quality levels in the last hours, the readings at some points of the swim course are still above the acceptable limits,” organizers said. “Our priority is the health of the athletes.”

The postponement follows a meeting involving World Triathlon, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and city officials. The men’s triathlon is now scheduled to start at 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, while the women’s triathlon, also scheduled for that day, will proceed only if water quality tests are favorable. Friday has been designated as a backup date for both events.

The delay has been influenced by recent weather patterns, including heavy rain during the Olympic opening ceremony on Friday and continuing storms through the week. Rain generally exacerbates contamination levels in the Seine, complicating the efforts to ensure a safe environment for the athletes.

Aurélie Merle, Paris 2024 Director of Sports, expressed frustration over the situation but emphasized ongoing commitment to the project. “There are unfortunate meteorological events outside of our control,” Merle said. “But otherwise the project is still very strong. When we see the impact on the quality and the legacy that we can leave also to the Parisians, we all feel extremely proud of what we’ve done so far.”

Water quality tests have shown varying E. coli levels at different points along the course, with some readings reaching 1,553 colony-forming units per 100 milliliters, well above the European safety threshold of 900 units. E. coli contamination can pose health risks, including gastrointestinal infections and other illnesses.

Efforts to improve water quality have included constructing a giant basin to capture excess rainwater and prevent wastewater from entering the Seine, as well as upgrading sewer infrastructure and treatment facilities.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo recently demonstrated confidence in the water quality by swimming in the river with other officials, though subsequent data indicated that E. coli levels were slightly above the acceptable limit at that time.

The rescheduled men’s triathlon and the women’s triathlon, if held on Wednesday, will face additional challenges from the anticipated heat, which may impact the events’ conclusion. Future events in the Seine include the mixed relay triathlon on August 5 and the marathon swimming events on August 8 and 9.

Taylor Swift ‘in shock’ as fatal stabbing at UK dance class claims three young lives

LONDON. Taylor Swift expressed her profound shock and grief following a tragic stabbing attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga class in Southport, northwestern England, which resulted in the deaths of three young girls. The latest victim, a 9-year-old girl, succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, with the other fatalities being girls aged 6 and 7.

The attack, which occurred just before noon on Monday, left eight children and two adults hospitalized, with both adults and five of the children in critical condition. A 17-year-old suspect, arrested minutes after the incident, faces charges of murder and attempted murder. The suspect, originally from Cardiff, Wales, has not yet been formally charged.

Swift took to Instagram to express her devastation, stating, “I am completely in shock and still taking in the horror of what happened. These were just little kids at a dance class. I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”

Local residents have paid tribute by leaving flowers and stuffed animals at a police cordon in the seaside resort, known for its beach and pier that attract vacationers. Witnesses described the scene as “from a horror movie,” with children covered in blood fleeing the community center, Hart Space, where the workshop was held.

Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy stated, “We believe the adults who were injured were bravely trying to protect the children who were being attacked.” The police have clarified that the attack is not being treated as terror-related and are not seeking any additional suspects.

The attack has intensified concerns over rising knife crime in the UK, where such incidents have sparked calls for stricter controls on bladed weapons. The tragic event is reminiscent of the country’s worst attack on children, the Dunblane massacre of 1996, which led to a ban on private handgun ownership.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the attack “horrendous and deeply shocking,” while King Charles III conveyed his “condolences, prayers and deepest sympathies” to those affected. Prince William and his wife Catherine also expressed their sorrow, saying, “As parents, we cannot begin to imagine what the families, friends, and loved ones of those killed and injured in Southport today are going through.”

Colin Parry, who witnessed the suspect arriving by taxi, described the scene as “like something from America, not like sunny Southport,” adding that many of the victims appeared to be young girls. The suspect reportedly reacted aggressively when confronted about not paying for his taxi.

Recent years have seen a rise in mass stabbings in the UK, contributing to growing fears and outrage over violent attacks. Notable incidents include a fatal stabbing in London in April 2023, an attack in Nottingham in June 2022, and a deadly assault in Reading in June 2020.

Authorities continue to investigate the attack and coordinate rescue and support efforts for the affected families and community.

“There would also be an additional P10,000 cash gift for all Filipinos aged 80, 85, 90, and 95,” ayon sa Pangulo.

US enhances alliance with Philippines with $500-M funding and new pact amid China concerns

0

MANILA. The United States announced $500 million in military funding on Tuesday. This move aims to enhance the Philippine military’s capabilities and address shared concerns over China’s aggressive actions in the region. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin unveiled the funding during their visit to Manila, where they met with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Marcos praised the “very open” communication between Washington and Manila, emphasizing the importance of a strong U.S. military presence for regional stability. “We are continuously examining and reexamining our treaty alliance and key issues in the South China Sea and the Indo-Pacific region,” Marcos said.

The new funding will support the modernization of the Philippine military and coast guard. It includes approximately $125 million for infrastructure improvements at Philippine military bases under the 2014 Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), which allows U.S. forces to use these bases.

Blinken and Austin also discussed progress on a proposed military intelligence-sharing pact, the General Security of Military Information Agreement. Austin indicated that the agreement could be finalized later this year, which would enable the U.S. to provide advanced intelligence, weaponry, and surveillance technology to the Philippines while ensuring the confidentiality of sensitive information.

“The commitment will endure, again, irrespective of administrations,” Blinken assured. He and Austin reiterated the U.S. commitment to defend the Philippines if attacked, including in the South China Sea.

Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro emphasized the strategic value of this support. “Every peso or dollar spent on hardening Philippine capabilities to defend itself and to deter unlawful aggression will be a plus against any threat actor, whether it be China or anyone,” he said.

The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions between Philippine and Chinese forces in the South China Sea. Last week, the Philippines and China reached a temporary arrangement to avoid clashes around the Philippine-occupied Second Thomas Shoal, following a violent confrontation on June 17.

The arrangement has been supported by several countries, including the U.S., Japan, Australia, South Korea, New Zealand, and Singapore. However, Philippine Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo stressed that the country will continue to strengthen its territorial defense with the aid of the U.S. and other allies.

“The non-confrontational resupply and rotation is purely temporary. The People’s Republic of China will not stop and we are determined just as well,” Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Manuel Romualdez told The Associated Press.

Marcos also alluded to the political divisions in the U.S. ahead of the upcoming presidential election, but Blinken assured that U.S. support for the Philippines will remain consistent. “That commitment will endure, again, irrespective of administrations,” Blinken stated.

The U.S. and the Philippines have also expanded their military cooperation under the EDCA, with increased joint exercises and deployments of American forces. This expansion has drawn criticism from China, which argues that such moves threaten regional peace and security. The Philippines has defended its right to strengthen its defense and safeguard its national interests.

Deadly landslides hit Kerala, India: At least 93 dead and hundreds missing

KOCHI, India. A series of devastating landslides struck southern India’s Kerala on Tuesday, claiming at least 93 lives and leaving hundreds more missing. The disaster, triggered by torrential rain, has wreaked havoc across tea estates and villages in the Wayanad district, one of the state’s renowned tourist areas.

The landslides, which occurred after midnight following heavy rainfall on Monday, collapsed hillsides, unleashing torrents of mud, water, and boulders. Most of the victims were tea estate workers and their families who were asleep in makeshift shelters when the landslides hit.

Television footage captured the chaos as rescue workers navigated through uprooted trees, flattened structures, and strewn boulders. Efforts were hampered by chest-high mud, as illustrated by the dramatic rescue of a man trapped in the muck for hours before emergency workers reached him.

According to local reports, at least 93 people have been confirmed dead, and 100 families remain stranded. Nearly 350 families lived in the affected region, which is primarily dedicated to tea and cardamom cultivation. State officials have confirmed that 250 people have been rescued so far.

In response to the crisis, army engineers have been deployed to construct a replacement bridge after the original one, which connected the affected area to the town of Chooralmala, was destroyed. Kerala Chief Secretary V. Venu reported that while a small team had managed to cross the river and reach the site, more assistance was urgently needed to support rescue operations and locate missing individuals.

The weather office reported extremely heavy rainfall over north and central Kerala on Tuesday, with additional rain expected throughout the day. The adverse weather conditions have severely impacted the region’s tourism industry, which had been halted since Monday.

State Cabinet Minister M. B. Rajesh described the situation as dire, stating, “We fear the gravity of this tragedy is much more. Rescue operations are being carried out by various agencies on a war footing.”

Resident Rashid Padikkalparamban, involved in the relief efforts, reported that at least three landslides occurred starting around midnight, washing away the bridge connecting the Mundakkai estates to Chooralmala. He added, “Many people who were working in the estates and staying in makeshift tents inside are feared trapped or missing.”

Padikkalparamban and about a hundred others from his area have relocated to the nearby Tree Valley resort. Asianet TV reported that rescuers had not yet been able to reach some survivors who called from the resort.

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, who was elected from Wayanad but resigned to focus on his family constituency, has called for coordinated relief efforts. “The devastation unfolding in Wayanad is heartbreaking,” Gandhi said in a message on X. “I have urged the union government to extend all possible support.”

Israel claims to have killed senior Hezbollah commander in Beirut airstrike

JERUSALEM. Israel’s military has announced the killing of a top Hezbollah commander, Fuad Shukr, in an airstrike on Beirut. This operation was reportedly in response to a rocket attack three days prior, which Israel attributes to Hezbollah and which resulted in the deaths of 12 youths in the Druze village of Majdal Shams.

The airstrike occurred around 7:40 p.m. local time (1640 GMT), with a Reuters witness describing a significant explosion and a large plume of smoke rising from Beirut’s southern suburbs, a known Hezbollah stronghold.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant confirmed the strike, stating, “Fuad Shukr has the blood of many Israelis on his hands. Tonight, we have shown that the blood of our people has a price, and that there is no place out of reach for our forces to this end.”

Hezbollah has not yet responded to the claim, and the group denies any involvement in the rocket attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. However, a senior security source from another regional country has confirmed Shukr’s death from injuries sustained in the strike.

The Israeli military identified Shukr as the principal aide to Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and the key figure behind the Saturday’s attack. The airstrike also resulted in civilian casualties, with medical and security sources reporting the deaths of three civilians, including two children. Lebanese health officials reported 74 people injured and three fatalities in the attack, which targeted the Shura Council headquarters in the Haret Hreik neighborhood.

Footage from the scene shows significant damage, including a multi-story building with a severely damaged corner and streets strewn with charred debris. Amid the destruction, crowds gathered to express support for Hezbollah’s leadership.

Hezbollah has denied any involvement in the Golan Heights attack but acknowledged launching rockets at a military target in the area. The recent violence has spurred high-level diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation. UN Special Coordinator Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert has urged both Israel and Lebanon to seek diplomatic solutions, asserting, “There is no such thing as a military solution.”

The White House has reaffirmed its support for Israel, stating its commitment to countering “all Iran-backed threats including Hezbollah,” while also advocating for a diplomatic resolution.

The Israeli military has not issued new civil defense instructions, suggesting a potential de-escalation of immediate military actions. Israeli media reports indicate that the recent airstrike might conclude its response to the Golan Heights attack, depending on Hezbollah’s reaction.

Throughout the day, approximately 25 rockets were launched from southern Lebanon into northern Israel, resulting in the death of a 30-year-old man in Kibbutz Hagoshrim, according to medics.

Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib condemned the Israeli strike and announced plans to file a complaint with the United Nations. He expressed hope for a measured response from Hezbollah to avoid further escalation, stating, “We were not expecting them to hit Beirut and they hit Beirut. Hopefully, any response will be proportionate and will not be more than that, so that this wave of killing, hitting and shelling will stop.”

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, speaking before the strike, expressed concerns about the potential for escalation but remained hopeful that a broader conflict could be avoided.

The current hostilities mark a continuation of the ongoing conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, which last saw a major confrontation during the 2006 Lebanon War. Despite recent exchanges of fire, both sides have indicated they do not seek an extensive conflict, though concerns about the risk of a broader war persist.

Mag-asawa, pinatay sa pukpok at itinapon sa bundok sa Batangas

STO. TOMAS CITY, Batangas.

Netanyahu promises severe retaliation against Hezbollah following deadly Golan Heights strike

MAJDAL SHAMS, Golan Heights. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed significant retaliation against Hezbollah on Monday after a rocket attack over the weekend killed 12 children in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. The attack, which struck a soccer field in Majdal Shams, was attributed to Hezbollah by Israel, though the Lebanese group has denied involvement.

In response to the deadly strike, which occurred on Saturday evening, Netanyahu visited the scene and promised a strong response. “These children are our children, they are the children of all of us,” Netanyahu stated while laying a wreath at the site. “The state of Israel will not and cannot overlook this. Our response will come, and it will be severe,” he added.

The attack has heightened tensions in the region, where Israeli and Hezbollah forces have engaged in frequent exchanges of fire since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October. The latest incident has sparked fears of a broader regional conflict.

On Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, stressing the need to avoid escalation and to pursue diplomatic solutions. The U.S. and France have been working towards a negotiated agreement to stabilize the border area.

In the immediate aftermath of the strike, Israeli airstrikes targeted a motorcycle in Lebanon, killing two people and injuring three others, though these strikes were reportedly not linked to the weekend attack. Hezbollah, which has moved precision-guided missiles, maintains that it does not seek full-scale war but warns of fighting without limits if necessary.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant also visited Majdal Shams, asserting that Hezbollah would “pay a price” for the attack but providing no further details. Israeli military sources indicated that Hezbollah used an Iranian-made Falaq rocket with a 53-kilogram warhead in the assault.

As the situation remains volatile, international efforts continue to prevent further escalation. White House National Security Council officials are engaged in talks with Israeli and Lebanese counterparts to seek a resolution.

The region is already reeling from the consequences of the ongoing conflict, which has claimed over 500 lives in Lebanon and 47 in Israel, with tens of thousands displaced. A repeat of the intense conflict seen during the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah could lead to severe destruction, as Hezbollah possesses a substantial arsenal of rockets and missiles.

Paris 2024 organizers address food and transport issues following athlete complaints

PARIS. Paris Olympics organizers announced on Monday that they have resolved initial logistical issues related to food and transportation after receiving complaints from several delegations.

Athletes had voiced concerns over the quality and quantity of food, particularly after catering staff had rationed breakfast eggs last week. The organizers had initially promised a focus on fresh, locally sourced, and organic produce with a variety of vegetarian options. However, some athletes requested more meat.

Carrefour supplied over 600 tonnes of fresh produce while catering firm Sodexo is responsible for preparing around 40,000 meals daily for the 15,000 athletes in the Olympic Village. Paris 2024 CEO Etienne Thobois addressed the situation, saying, “Regarding the food we’ve had to make some adjustments, which is normal in operations that size. There has been a reinforcement in animal proteins with 700 kilos of eggs and a ton of meat (available) to meet the demands of the athletes, who we place at the heart of the Paris 2024 experience.”

Transportation issues also arose, prompting six South Korean swimmers to relocate to a nearby hotel after experiencing long commutes in hot buses. The Korea Swimming Federation made this decision following complaints from swimmers Kim Woo-min and Hwang Sun-woo.

Thobois acknowledged the early transportation problems and stated, “At the beginning of the operations we’ve had some problems concerning the transportation of the athletes, especially before the Games started. We’ve taken measures since then with reserve (buses) to serve the athletes in the best possible way and I think the system is now operating perfectly.”

The Australian delegation, consisting of 460 athletes, came prepared with over three tons of tuna, 10,000 muesli bars, 2,400 meat pies, and three baristas expected to serve more than 20,000 shots of coffee. Despite the initial issues, the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) expressed satisfaction with their experience. “This is a high quality village,” the AOC stated. “Early teething issues with transport have been resolved and the food is varied and plentiful after some early shortfalls. Quantities have been increased and staff added. Whenever the AOC has provided feedback, changes are made. Our accommodation is centrally located with easy access to all the main services within the village including the dining hall.”

Philippine oil spill hits fishing village, posing threat to local livelihoods

0

TANZA, Cavite. An oil spill from a marine tanker that capsized off Manila Bay has reached the shores of the nearby fishing town of Tanza, endangering the health and livelihood of local fishermen. The spill has prompted immediate cleanup efforts to mitigate the impact on the community.

The MT Terra Nova sank in rough seas off Limay in Bataan province on Thursday while carrying 1.5 million liters of industrial fuel. Tragically, one of the 17 crew members lost their life in the incident.

Fishermen in Tanza, located in Cavite province south of Manila, are grappling with the consequences of the spill. The oil slick that has washed ashore has been accompanied by a strong foul odor, deeply affecting the local fishing industry. “This oil spill will have a big effect on us fishermen because we rely on the sea and it has been affected by the oil,” said Renan Honsana, 48. He added, “We would need to sell our catches very cheap because people would not buy it. Where can we get our livelihood except to this sea?”

The Philippine Coast Guard has reported that it has successfully sealed the leak from the capsized tanker and is beginning to siphon off the remaining oil to prevent further leakage. Aerial surveys of the affected waters in Limay, Bulacan, and Cavite have shown “minimal oil sheen.”

Officials are investigating whether the sinking of the MT Terra Nova was linked to Typhoon Gaemi, which has caused severe monsoon rains in the Philippines, leading to floods and landslides that have claimed at least 36 lives.
