HANOI, Vietnam. Chinese President Xi Jinping began his diplomatic tour of Southeast Asia on Monday by warning against the dangers of protectionism and presenting China as a stabilizing force in global trade, in contrast to the United States’ recent tariff decisions under former President Donald Trump.
“There are no winners in a trade war, or a tariff war,” Xi said in an editorial jointly published in Vietnamese and Chinese state media. “Our two countries should resolutely safeguard the multilateral trading system, stable global industrial and supply chains, and open and cooperative international environment.”
Xi’s remarks come as the U.S. maintains steep tariffs on Chinese imports, including a 145% duty rate, despite a recent pause on some tariffs. Trump, speaking from the Oval Office, accused China and Vietnam of plotting to undermine the U.S., saying the two countries were trying “to figure out how do we screw the United States of America.”
Strengthening China’s Ties in the Region
Upon arrival in Hanoi, Xi was received with high honors by Vietnamese President Luong Cuong. The ceremonial welcome included a drum performance by local students and flag-waving for both nations and their Communist parties, a display reflecting the significance of Xi’s two-day visit.
In a meeting with Vietnam’s Communist Party General Secretary To Lam, Xi emphasized the importance of regional cooperation: “In the face of turmoil and disruption in the current global context, China and Vietnam’s commitment to peaceful development, and deepening of friendship and cooperation has brought the world valuable stability and certainty.”
Xi also met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and the two sides signed several memorandums aimed at boosting cooperation on railway infrastructure, environmental protection, and supply chain resilience. According to Vietnamese state media Nhan Dan, both countries agreed to expedite an $8 billion cross-border railway project approved earlier this year.
Regional Strategy Amid U.S. Tariffs
Analysts say the timing of Xi’s visit is no coincidence. Huong Le-Thu of the International Crisis Group noted that the trip sends a “strong political message that Southeast Asia is important to China,” especially as the region braces for the potential consequences of U.S. trade measures.
“Given the severity of Trump’s tariffs and despite the 90-day pause, Southeast Asian nations are anxious that the tariffs, if implemented, could complicate their development,” Le-Thu said.
Vietnam, in particular, finds itself in a delicate position. While operating under a Communist one-party system similar to China, the country has also forged strong ties with Washington. In 2023, Vietnam hosted both U.S. President Joe Biden and Xi Jinping and upgraded its diplomatic relations with the U.S. to the same level as with China and Russia.
Economically, Vietnam has benefited from the shift in global supply chains away from China. Chinese state media reported a 14.6% year-on-year increase in China- Vietnam trade in 2024, reinforcing their complex interdependence.
Still, concerns persist in Washington that Vietnam is being used as a backdoor for Chinese goods, leading to a 46% tariff imposition before the latest temporary reprieve.
“This puts Vietnam in a very precarious situation,” said Nguyen Khac Giang, a fellow at the ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore. “This trip to Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia is all about how China can really insulate itself against the tariffs from Trump.”
Xi has visited Vietnam more frequently in recent years, a signal of China’s strategic recalibration. After Hanoi, he is scheduled to travel to Malaysia and Cambodia to further solidify China’s regional influence.
South China Sea and Lingering Tensions
Despite growing economic cooperation, long-standing territorial disputes between China and Vietnam in the South China Sea remain unresolved. While confrontations between the two countries’ coast guards continue, Vietnam rarely publicizes these incidents to maintain diplomatic balance.
As Xi moves forward with his Southeast Asia tour, his message remains clear: China wants to deepen partnerships and portray itself as a counterweight to Western protectionism and unilateralism.
Jeff Bezos’ space company, Blue Origin, successfully launched an all-female celebrity crew into space on Monday, marking a historic moment in the evolution of space tourism. The mission was led by Bezos’ fiancée, Lauren Sanchez, and included pop star Katy Perry, broadcast journalist Gayle King, and several other accomplished women.
The flight, launched from West Texas aboard the New Shepard rocket, reached the edge of space — approximately 66 miles (107 kilometers) above Earth — and gave the crew several minutes of weightlessness during the 10-minute, fully automated journey.
Sanchez, a helicopter pilot and former TV journalist, personally invited the group. Joining her were:
Katy Perry, singer-songwriter, who serenaded Earth with “What a Wonderful World” while in space;
Gayle King, co-host of CBS Mornings, who kissed the ground upon landing and exclaimed, “Oh my God, that was amazing”;
Kerianne Flynn, a film producer;
Aisha Bowe, a former NASA engineer and advocate for science education;
Amanda Nguyen is an astrophysicist and human rights activist.
“This wasn’t just about us taking up space — we were making space for the future,” Perry said during a post-flight press conference. “It’s about a collective energy in there. It’s about us.”
This flight marked Blue Origin’s 11th human spaceflight and the first all-female crew launched from U.S. soil — a milestone in the 64-year history of human space travel. The only other all-female space mission was by Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, who flew solo in 1963.
Despite this progress, women still represent less than 15% of the over 700 individuals who have traveled to space. Sanchez said she intentionally chose an all-female crew to inspire both young and old, commissioning special suits for the mission to symbolize their unity and purpose.
Spectators at the launch included Oprah Winfrey, Kris Jenner, and former NASA astronaut Mae Jemison, the first Black woman in space. Emotions ran high as the capsule reached the edge of space, with cheers and tears from loved ones watching from below.
Bezos, who founded Blue Origin in 2000 after his success with Amazon, personally greeted the crew after landing, opening the capsule and embracing Sanchez, the first to step out. Their wedding is scheduled for later this year in Venice.
While Blue Origin has not disclosed ticket prices or who funded this particular flight, most of its 58 space tourists to date have included business leaders, science advocates, and public figures.
Blue Origin previously made headlines by sending Star Trek actor William Shatner to space in 2021, followed by TV host Michael Strahan and aviation pioneer Wally Funk.
As commercial spaceflight continues to grow, competitors like SpaceX are also expanding access. Chinese-born bitcoin investor Chun Wang recently funded and joined the first polar spaceflight via SpaceX, declaring: “In this exciting new era of commercial spaceflight, the dream of becoming an astronaut is no longer limited to a select few.”
With this latest Blue Origin mission, Lauren Sanchez and her fellow crewmates have quite literally reached for the stars — and in doing so, are helping redefine what the future of space travel can look like.
The flight, launched from West Texas aboard the New Shepard rocket, reached the edge of space — approximately 66 miles (107 kilometers) above Earth — and gave the crew several minutes of weightlessness during the 10-minute, fully automated journey.
MAYNILA.
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip. A senior Hamas official confirmed Monday that the Palestinian militant group is dispatching a delegation to Qatar to resume indirect ceasefire negotiations with Israel, as conflict continues to escalate in the Gaza Strip. The move comes amid renewed international concern over worsening humanitarian conditions and a mounting civilian death toll.
The unnamed Hamas official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the ongoing talks, said recent discussions held in Cairo included a new proposal for Hamas to release 8 to 10 hostages currently held in Gaza. However, a major hurdle remains unresolved: whether any potential agreement would include an official end to the war.
The official said the upcoming talks in Qatar are expected to take place later this week or early next week. As of now, Israeli and Qatari authorities have not commented on the development.
The push for renewed dialogue follows the collapse of a previous ceasefire agreement in January that lasted for eight weeks. That truce, initially intended to pave the way for a longer-term resolution, broke down when Israel resumed its offensive, citing its goal to fully dismantle Hamas before considering an end to the conflict.
Since the breakdown of the ceasefire last month, Israel has significantly intensified its operations in Gaza. Humanitarian aid has been effectively blocked, with Israeli forces reportedly seizing control of several strategic areas in an effort to pressure Hamas into accepting a deal closer to Israeli terms.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned Monday that the humanitarian situation in Gaza may now be “the worst” since Israel launched its retaliatory campaign 18 months ago.
“No fuel has come in, no food has come in, no medicine has come in,” said U.N. spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, referring to the Israeli blockade that has remained in place since March 2.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, 38 people were confirmed dead in the past 24 hours, with a total of more than 1,600 Palestinians reportedly killed since the ceasefire’s collapse. The ministry reports that over 50,000 Palestinians have died in Israel’s retaliatory offensive since the conflict began. While the ministry does not distinguish between combatants and civilians, it states that more than half of the casualties have been women and children.
The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking around 250 hostages. While many have been released through previous ceasefire deals, 59 hostages remain in Gaza, 24 of whom are believed to still be alive.
As the international community continues to call for restraint and a lasting peace, the outcome of the upcoming Qatar talks may prove pivotal in shaping the next phase of this protracted and devastating conflict.
MANILA. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is anticipating a major surge in travelers during Holy Week 2025, with an estimated 150,000 passengers expected to pass through the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) daily, according to Transportation Secretary Vivencio “Vince” Dizon.
In an interview with Super Radyo dzBB on Sunday, Dizon said efforts are underway to ensure a safe and seamless travel experience for passengers amid the Holy Week rush.
“Napakadaming dumadagsa sa ating mga airports ngayon. Sa NAIA lang, baka ine-estimate na aabutin ng 150,000 kada araw ang dadagsa sa ating mga airport na bibyaheng mga kababayan natin,” Dizon noted.
The transport chief said he has coordinated with San Miguel Corporation, which operates NAIA, and the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) to beef up resources and personnel. Additional staff have been deployed at check-in counters to manage queues, and driveway lanes have been doubled to ease vehicular traffic outside the terminals.
Packed Bus Terminals, Long Waits
The same passenger congestion is being felt at land terminals. At the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) and Cubao stations, buses are reportedly fully booked, causing delays and travel disruptions for passengers bound for the provinces.
According to Darlene Cay’s report on “24 Oras Weekend,” some travelers headed for the Bicol Region were forced to postpone their trips due to the lack of available bus seats. On Saturday alone, PITX recorded 160,000 passengers, with similar numbers expected through the week.
“Marami na po yung mga nakapag-advanced booking pero hindi naman po ibig sabihin noon ay wala na po tayong biyahe sa PITX,” said Kolyn Calbasa, Senior Officer for Corporate Affairs at PITX. “Marami pa rin naman po available trips dahil nagdagdag po ng mga buses or supply ang mga bus companies.”
Despite full bookings for air-conditioned buses bound for Camarines Norte in Cubao until Black Saturday, April 19, some routes remain open for walk-in passengers, including Tuguegarao and Olongapo.
Tightened Inspections and Port Monitoring
Over at the Batangas Port, the operator has begun working closely with the DOTr and Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) to issue special permits and increase ferry trips due to the heavy demand. On Sunday evening alone, 15,000 passengers departed and 5,000 arrived via the port.
“Kung hindi mababawasan ang pasahero ng tatawid papuntang Odiongan, tuloy tuloy ‘yan na parang kulang tayo ng isang barko palagi hanggang Huwebes Santo,” said Batangas Port manager Joselito Sinocruz in a report by GMA’s Dano Tingcungco.
Passengers were also seen lining up early to secure tickets for next-day trips to Mindoro, Romblon, and the Visayas. Some expressed surprise at the sheer volume of travelers.
As of Sunday, Malacañang’s declaration of April 17 (Maundy Thursday) and April 18 (Good Friday) as regular holidays and April 19 (Black Saturday) as a special non-working day, has contributed to the early exodus from Metro Manila.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has been placed on heightened alert from April 13 (Palm Sunday) to April 20 (Easter Sunday) to ensure the safety of sea travelers.
Meanwhile, four shipping lines were barred by MARINA from operating during Holy Week due to safety violations, including absence of life jackets and damaged sirens. Authorities are also monitoring potential colorum trips, warning the public against boarding unregistered vessels.
“Sana ano, huwag na natin gawin ‘yun kasi very risky ‘yung ganyan, at your own risk po ‘yan sa mga kababayan natin,” Dizon warned in a separate “24 Oras Weekend” interview. “Sinusugal nila ang buhay nila kasi siyempre, unang una, ‘pag ka kolorum, walang insurance ‘yan. Wala silang makukuhang kahit ano kung may mangyari.”
Strict Standards for Terminals
Secretary Dizon also reiterated the need for terminals to maintain clean and fully operational facilities, especially restrooms. He emphasized that the DOTr would not hesitate to take action against non-compliant terminals.
“Kailangan talaga mag-impose ng standards dito. At kung hindi sila mag-meet ng standards, either ipapasara ang mga terminal nila o isuspend muna,” he said.
As the Holy Week continues, all major transport hubs remain on high alert, with security and service personnel deployed in full force to manage the expected millions of Filipino travelers seeking to spend the holidays in the provinces.
OSAKA, Japan. The highly anticipated Expo 2025 officially opened on Sunday at Yumeshima, or “dream island,” in Osaka, Japan, with a powerful message of global unity and futuristic vision. The event kicked off with over 10,000 voices singing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, symbolizing harmony in a world increasingly divided by conflict and crises.
A Vision for the Future
This year’s theme, “Creating a Future Society for Our Lives,” sets the tone for the six-month international exposition, which brings together over 160 countries, regions, and organizations to showcase innovative ideas and cutting-edge technology inside approximately 80 uniquely designed pavilions.
The Expo is hosted on a reclaimed industrial waste site in Osaka Bay and marks the city’s second time holding the event since its landmark success in 1970, which attracted a record-breaking 64 million visitors — a feat unmatched until Shanghai’s Expo in 2010.
“It’s been 55 years since the last Expo in Osaka. I’ve been looking forward to it,” said Daiki Chiba, who traveled from Sendai, about 900 kilometers (560 miles) away.
Visitors, many clad in red, blue, and white in tribute to the Expo’s official mascot Myaku-Myaku, brought a festive energy to Yumeshima. The mysterious creature, described by organizers as born from “a fusion of cells and water in a small spring in the Kansai region,” quickly became a crowd favorite.
A Timely Gathering
The Osaka Expo comes on the heels of a turbulent global landscape: from ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East to trade disputes and economic uncertainty. Still, organizers see the timing as opportune.
“I think the timing is actually quite fitting,” said Sachiko Yoshimura, head of global communications for Expo 2025. “Holding the Expo now could eventually help to address the divisions in the world. … I believe this Expo in Japan might actually lead to stronger international relationships and improvements.”
The Grand Ring: An Architectural Marvel
Dominating the venue is the Grand Ring, a lattice-like wooden structure encircling the site. Designed by renowned architect Sou Fujimoto, the 20-meter high, 2-kilometer long ring has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest wooden architecture in the world.
While a highlight, the ring has drawn criticism due to its high cost, accounting for more than 14% of the Expo’s total budget of 235 billion yen (around $1.64 billion). A weakened yen and construction delays have compounded its expense, resulting in several country pavilions—including Nepal, India, Vietnam, and Chile—not being ready for opening day.
The structure is designed to be partially reusable, reflecting the event’s emphasis on sustainability and the future.
Innovations, Pop Culture, and Global Messages
Exhibits at Expo 2025 range from advanced robotics, flying cars, and health tech to displays of pop culture icons like Hello Kitty and Gundam. Visitors can explore concepts like ocean sustainability at the Blue Ocean Dome or interact with robots at the Future of Life Pavilion.
A highlight at the Japanese healthcare pavilion was a functioning artificial heart made from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS). Meanwhile, a nostalgic throwback — the “human washing machine” that wowed visitors in 1970 — returned with a high-tech upgrade.
The United States pavilion focuses on space exploration, reviving interest in lunar missions with a display of the Apollo 12 lunar stone. China’s pavilion showcases lunar soil samples, echoing its own space ambitions.
One of the most emotionally powerful displays came from Ukraine. Decorated in blue-and-yellow national flags and marked “Not for sale,” its exhibit uses barcodes that allow visitors to scan and watch videos of life during war and efforts to rebuild. According to creative director Dymtro Liuyi, Ukraine’s participation wasn’t confirmed until December. “The preparation was finished Sunday morning,” he said, showing blue paint still on his fingers.
A Global Festival of Hope
Despite challenges, the spirit of Expo 2025 is one of hope, innovation, and global solidarity.
“We want this Expo to offer a glimpse of a better, shared future,” said one organizer. “From crisis can come connection — that’s the goal.”
Expo 2025 will run for six months, drawing millions of visitors from around the world to imagine, experience, and build toward a new kind of future.
Dominating the venue is the Grand Ring, a lattice-like wooden structure encircling the site. Designed by renowned architect Sou Fujimoto, the 20-meter high, 2-kilometer long ring has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest wooden architecture in the world.
BATANGAS CITY.
CAIRO. A major hospital in Gaza was hit by two Israeli missiles early Sunday, severely damaging its emergency department and forcing a mass evacuation of patients, according to medics and Palestinian health officials.
The Al-Ahli Arab Hospital, a facility run by the Anglican Church in Jerusalem, is now out of operation following the strikes. Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that the attack occurred shortly after a phone call from someone identifying as Israeli security, warning of an imminent strike.
“Hundreds of patients and injured people had to be evacuated in the middle of the night, and many of them are now out in the streets without medical care, which puts their lives at risk,” said ministry spokesperson Khalil Al-Deqran.
No casualties were reported from the strike.
The Israeli military confirmed the airstrike, stating that it had targeted Hamas fighters allegedly using the hospital compound to coordinate attacks. “The compound was used by Hamas terrorists as a cover for their operations,” the military said in a statement, adding that precautionary steps were taken “to reduce harm to civilians.”
Hamas denied the accusations and called for an international investigation into the incident.
Reuters video footage from the scene showed extensive damage to the church within the hospital compound and patients who were unable to flee still inside.
The airstrike coincided with renewed efforts to secure a ceasefire, as Hamas leaders participated in talks in Cairo, mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States. The negotiations aim to break a deadlock in the truce efforts between Israel and Hamas.
Al-Ahli Hospital had previously served as a vital refuge for Gaza’s war-wounded and sick as the conflict continues. Its shutdown comes at a critical moment when access to medical care remains severely limited across the Gaza Strip.
MAYNILA.
“TikTok does not permit misinformation that causes harm to individuals or the community,” ayon sa kanilang pahayag.
