Swiss politician fined for buying pink water pistols online under weapons law

ZURICH. A Swiss politician has been fined for purchasing pink water pistols online after authorities ruled that the toys violated the country’s strict weapons law, the local newspaper Aargauer Zeitung reported.

Marc Jaisli, a member of the local council in Buchs, a town west of Zurich, ordered the water pistols in August through ultra-low-cost online retailer Temu as gifts for his godchildren. However, Swiss prosecutors deemed the purchase a legal violation, arguing that the water pistols—despite their bright pink color—could be mistaken for real firearms due to their appearance.

Jaisli was ordered to pay a fine totaling 6,500 Swiss francs ($7,390) for breaching Switzerland’s weapons law. The authorities maintained that the regulation applied even to imitation firearms if they could be confused with actual weapons.

The Aargauer Zeitung reported that Jaisli was unaware of the violation but accepted the penalty and has since paid the fine. The case has drawn attention to Switzerland’s strict regulations concerning toy weapons and imitation firearms, sparking debate over the enforcement of such laws.

Could dark energy hold the key to how the universe will end?

0

NEW YORK. Scientists are making significant progress in understanding dark energy, a mysterious force that constitutes nearly 70% of the universe and is responsible for its accelerated expansion. The latest research suggests that dark energy may not be a constant force as previously believed, but rather one that is gradually weakening—a discovery that could reshape our understanding of cosmology and the ultimate fate of the universe.

The findings, presented at the American Physical Society meeting on Wednesday, provide additional evidence that dark energy might be waning. While still inconclusive, this development challenges the long-standing assumption that dark energy remains uniform over time.

The conclusions come from an international collaboration using the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), a project that has been mapping the distribution of galaxies over the past 11 billion years. By tracking how galaxies have spread and clustered, scientists can better understand the forces influencing cosmic expansion.

Last year, DESI released its initial analysis based on 6 million galaxies and quasars. With new data increasing the count to nearly 15 million, researchers found additional support for the hypothesis that dark energy may be weakening. These findings align with other independent measurements, including supernova explosions, cosmic background radiation, and distortions in galaxy shapes.

“It’s moving from a really surprising finding to almost a moment where we have to throw out how we’ve thought about cosmology and start over,” said Bhuvnesh Jain, a cosmologist at the University of Pennsylvania who was not involved in the study.

Physicists require a high level of statistical certainty before confirming a discovery, and the idea that dark energy is weakening is not yet at that threshold. The DESI collaboration aims to map 50 million galaxies and quasars by 2026, which may provide the necessary confirmation. Other research initiatives, including the European Space Agency’s Euclid mission and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile, are also investigating dark energy and will release their own findings in the coming years.

“We want to see several different collaborations having similar measurements” before drawing definitive conclusions, said Kris Pardo, a cosmologist at the University of Southern California.

If dark energy remains constant, the universe will continue expanding indefinitely, becoming colder and more desolate over time. However, if dark energy diminishes, the universe could one day cease expanding and eventually collapse in a scenario known as the Big Crunch—a reversal of the Big Bang.

“Now, there is the possibility that everything comes to an end,” said Mustapha Ishak-Boushaki, a study collaborator from the University of Texas at Dallas. “Would we consider that a good or bad thing? I don’t know.”

With new data on the horizon, scientists remain eager to uncover the true nature of dark energy and, ultimately, the fate of the cosmos.

‘Magtatago na lang ako’: Sen. Bato Dela Rosa, hindi susuko sa ICC

MAYNILA.

Kasama ‘yan sa courses of action natin.”

Handang samahan si Duterte sa ICC

Nauna nang sinabi ni Dela Rosa na kung sakaling maaresto siya, handa siyang dalhin sa The Hague, Netherlands upang samahan si dating Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na nahaharap sa kasong crimes against humanity kaugnay ng madugong war on drugs.

“I am ready to join the old man hoping that they would allow me to take care of him,” pahayag ni Dela Rosa isang araw matapos maaresto si Duterte.

Senado, maaaring maging ‘proteksyon’

Israel resumes ground operations in Gaza as airstrikes continue

CAIRO/JERUSALEM. The Israeli military announced on Wednesday that its forces had resumed ground operations in the central and southern Gaza Strip, following two days of intensified airstrikes that have killed at least 48 Palestinians, according to local health workers.

The renewed offensive comes a day after more than 400 Palestinians were killed in one of the deadliest airstrike campaigns since the conflict began in October 2023, effectively shattering a ceasefire that had largely held since January.

Israeli Military Expands Control Over Gaza Corridor

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the ground maneuvers were aimed at expanding control over the Netzarim Corridor, a strategic route that bisects Gaza. The military described this as a “focused operation” intended to create a partial buffer zone between the northern and southern parts of the enclave.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian militant group Hamas condemned the operation, calling it a “new and dangerous violation” of the ceasefire agreement. In a statement, the group urged international mediators to “assume their responsibilities” and reaffirmed its commitment to the truce.

UN Worker Killed in Gaza Strike

The United Nations (UN) reported that an airstrike on Wednesday killed a foreign UN staffer and injured five others at a UN compound in central Gaza City. The Gaza Health Ministry attributed the strike to Israel, but the Israeli military denied responsibility, stating it had targeted a Hamas site that was preparing to launch attacks on Israeli territory.

Jorge Moreira da Silva, Executive Director of the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), criticized the attack, stating:

“Israel knew that this was a UN premises, that people were living, staying, and working there. It is a compound. It is a very well-known place.”

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack and called for a full investigation, noting that at least 280 UN staff members had been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023.

The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry later confirmed that a Bulgarian national working for the UN was among the casualties, citing preliminary reports.

U.S. Pushes for Ceasefire Extension

As the fighting escalates, the U.S. State Department placed blame on Hamas for breaking the ceasefire and reiterated its call for a “bridge” proposal that would extend the truce and facilitate the release of hostages held in Gaza.

A State Department spokesperson warned:

“The opportunity is still there, but it’s closing fast.”

He added that Hamas’ response to the proposal had been “totally unacceptable”, and reaffirmed that the United States stands with Israel.

Israeli Airstrikes Kill Dozens

According to local health workers, Israeli airstrikes on Wednesday resulted in numerous civilian casualties:

  • Four people were killed, and 10 others were wounded in an airstrike on a residential house in Beit Hanoun.
  • A separate airstrike in Beit Lahiya struck a mourning tent, killing 24 people, according to medical sources.

The Israeli army also dropped new leaflets ordering evacuations in both northern and southern Gaza.

Escalation Sparks Protests in Israel

The renewed military campaign has triggered protests inside Israel, as at least 59 hostages remain in Hamas captivity, with 24 of them believed to be still alive.

A coalition of hostage families and government critics has accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of using the war for political purposes.

International Response

  • France and Germany joined Qatar and Egypt in condemning the renewed military operations.
  • Jordan’s King Abdullah, during a visit to Paris, called for the restoration of the ceasefire and the resumption of humanitarian aid flows.
  • Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a stark warning, stating:

“If the hostages are not released, Israel will act with force you have not yet seen.”

As tensions mount, both Israel and Hamas continue to accuse each other of violating the ceasefire agreement, leaving Gaza’s 2.3 million residents facing further devastation amid a worsening humanitarian crisis.

Trump and Zelenskiy commit to ending Ukraine war in ‘fantastic’ call

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy have pledged to work together to end the war in Ukraine, following what the White House described as a “fantastic” one-hour phone conversation on Wednesday.

This marks their first discussion since a heated Oval Office meeting on February 28. Zelenskiy expressed gratitude for U.S. support, while both leaders agreed to send technical teams to Saudi Arabia in the coming days for further talks.

Zelenskiy Requests Air Defense Support

During the call, Zelenskiy urged Trump to provide additional air defense assistance to protect Ukraine from Russian attacks. In response, Trump assured him that the U.S. would help source the necessary military equipment from Europe, according to the White House.

Trump also briefed Zelenskiy on his recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin had rejected a proposed full 30-day ceasefire—an offer Ukraine had been willing to accept—but agreed to halt attacks on energy infrastructure temporarily.

Despite this development, tensions remained high, with reports that Ukraine had targeted an oil depot in southern Russia, while Russian strikes hit hospitals, homes, and railway power systems in Ukraine.

Prisoner Exchange Amid Ongoing Strikes

Despite ongoing hostilities, both sides conducted a prisoner exchange on Wednesday. A total of 175 troops were released by each country, with the deal brokered by the United Arab Emirates. Russia also freed an additional 22 wounded Ukrainian soldiers as a “goodwill gesture.”

Zelenskiy described his discussion with Trump as “positive, very substantive, and frank.” He reaffirmed Ukraine’s readiness to halt strikes on Russian infrastructure and to accept an unconditional frontline ceasefire, as initially proposed by the U.S.

“One of the first steps toward fully ending the war could be ending strikes on energy and other civilian infrastructure. I supported this step, and Ukraine confirmed that we are ready to implement it,” Zelenskiy stated on social media.

He also told reporters that Trump acknowledged Ukraine would not recognize Russian occupation of its territory.

However, Zelenskiy criticized Russia’s recent airstrikes, saying they proved that Moscow was not yet committed to peace. He suggested that the U.S. oversee any ceasefire agreements to ensure their enforcement.

The Kremlin’s Stance

The Kremlin announced it had called off planned attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and even shot down seven of its own drones en route to Ukrainian targets. However, it accused Kyiv of failing to reciprocate, claiming Ukraine was attempting to sabotage peace efforts.

Additionally, Trump reportedly proposed that the U.S. could help operate and possibly take ownership of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants, including the Zaporizhzhia facility—the largest in Europe—which has been offline since Russian troops took control in 2022.

Zelenskiy confirmed that discussions with the U.S. about restoring the plant had already begun.

European Allies Express Concerns

Trump’s direct engagement with Putin has unsettled European allies, who worry that it signals a major shift in U.S. foreign policy. For decades, Washington has been committed to defending Europe against Russian expansionism.

Several European leaders noted that Putin’s rejection of a full ceasefire proved that Moscow was not genuinely seeking peace. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius remarked, “Putin is playing a game here, and I’m sure that the American president won’t be able to sit and watch for much longer.”

Meanwhile, European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced plans to propose supplying Ukraine with two million rounds of large-caliber artillery ammunition at an upcoming summit in Brussels.

Intensified Attacks on Both Sides

Over the past three years, Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s energy grid, justifying these attacks by claiming that civilian infrastructure supports Kyiv’s military operations. However, Ukrainians report that such strikes have decreased in recent months.

Ukraine has also intensified its long-range drone operations, frequently targeting Russian oil and gas facilities, which it says are fueling the war.

On Wednesday, Russian drone attacks damaged two hospitals in Ukraine’s Sumy region, forcing the evacuation of patients and medical staff. In Kyiv’s outskirts, airstrikes injured a 60-year-old man and hit homes and businesses in Bucha.

Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire at an oil depot in Russia’s Krasnodar region. The facility is a key rail terminal supplying oil to a pipeline that transports fuel from Kazakhstan to the Black Sea. Two industry sources indicated that the attack might disrupt Russian oil flows.

As both sides escalate their strikes, the path to ending Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II remains uncertain.

‘Duterte ICC arrest and transfer means a lot to EJK victims’

Political communication has a defining attribute. First, we’ll use the space here to relay a message from the ICC prosecutor after the arrest and transfer of former Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte and tackle some views about the theory next week.

That “(this) means a lot” to relatives of EJK victims means a lot to political communicators, too. Karim Khan says this and more:

Statement of the ICC Office of the Prosecutor on the arrest of former Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte

https://tinyurl.com/yvhkt564

The Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) welcomes the arrest and transfer of the suspect Mr Rodrigo Roa Duterte, former President of the Philippines, on 11 March 2025 by the Republic of the Philippines authorities. Mr Duterte has been arrested in the context of the Office’s ongoing investigation into the Situation in the Republic of the Philippines.

ICC Prosecutor Karim A.A. Khan KC on the arrest of former Philippine President Duterte

Based on its independent and impartial investigations, the Office of the Prosecutor alleges that Mr Duterte, as founder and head of the Davao Death Squad, then Mayor of Davao City, and subsequently as the President of the Philippines, is criminally responsible for the crime against humanity of murder (Article 7(1)(a) of the Rome Statute) committed in the Philippines between 1 November 2011 and 16 March 2019. Mr Duterte is alleged to have committed these crimes as part of a widespread and systematic attack directed against the civilian population.

In the warrant of arrest it issued on 7 March 2025, Pre-Trial Chamber I determined that there are reasonable grounds to believe that Mr Duterte bears criminal responsibility for the crime against humanity of murder. The Chamber also noted that the case against Mr. Duterte falls within the jurisdiction of the Court as the alleged crimes occurred during the period when the Philippines was a State Party to the Rome Statute, the ICC’s founding treaty.

The arrest of Mr Duterte is an important development in the Office’s pursuit of accountability in the Situation in the Republic of the Philippines for alleged crimes committed in the context of the so-called “war on drugs” campaign.

The Office has been able to conduct this work through the coordinated efforts of its Philippines Unified Team, under the guidance and leadership of Deputy Prosecutor Mame Mandiaye Niang, as well as its newly-established Tracking and Information Fusion Section and other relevant components of the Office. The Office is also grateful for the work of the Registry and the effective coordination of efforts to secure the arrest of the suspect.

This is a crucial step in our continuous work to ensure accountability for the victims of the most serious crimes under ICC jurisdiction. The Office is now commencing preparations towards the initial appearance and subsequent judicial proceedings before the Court.

The Office wishes to thank all the victims, survivors, witnesses, and activists from the Philippines who have stepped forward to cooperate in the Office’s investigation. Their strength, courage, and perseverance make these significant developments possible. Those who wish to further cooperate or who have relevant information are encouraged to do so via the Office’s Witness Appeal portal.

The Office’s investigation in the Situation in the Republic of the Philippines continues. In pursuing further accountability in this situation, the Office hopes to engage with the Philippine authorities on potential avenues of cooperation and will continue to rely on the partnership of national authorities, regional and international organizations, civil society, and the communities affected by the Rome Statute crimes.

Israel warns of more strikes as over 400 killed in Gaza airstrikes following ceasefire collapse

JERUSALEM/CAIRO. Israeli airstrikes pounded Gaza on Tuesday, killing over 400 people, according to Palestinian health authorities, marking one of the deadliest days since the war erupted. The attacks shattered nearly two months of relative calm following a ceasefire, with Israel warning that the onslaught was “just the beginning.”

The ceasefire, which had largely held since January, brought temporary relief to Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, many of whom have been displaced by continuous bombings. However, both Israel and Hamas accused each other of violating the truce, reigniting violence that had been simmering beneath diplomatic negotiations.

Israel: No More Negotiations Without Pressure

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the renewed military campaign, citing Hamas’ rejection of proposals to extend the ceasefire.

“From now on, Israel will act against Hamas with increasing force. And from now on, negotiations will only take place under fire,” Netanyahu declared from the Kirya army base in Tel Aviv.

He urged civilians in Gaza to evacuate to “safer areas,” while holding Hamas responsible for every civilian casualty.

“Hamas has already felt the blow of our arm in the last 24 hours. And I want to assure you: This is just the beginning,” Netanyahu warned.

Heavy Bombardment Across Gaza

Israeli warplanes struck residential houses and tent encampments from northern to southern Gaza, including Gaza City, where witnesses reported missiles raining down late into the night.

Tanks also shelled areas near Beit Hanoun and eastern Khan Younis, forcing thousands of families to flee on foot, in cars, or riding rickshaws. The Israeli military issued evacuation orders, warning residents to leave “dangerous combat zones.”

The Palestinian health ministry reported 408 fatalities on Tuesday alone, with 562 more wounded. In overcrowded hospitals, piles of bodies wrapped in white plastic sheets, stained with blood, were stacked as medical teams struggled to keep up with the influx of casualties.

“It was a night of hell. It felt like the first days of the war,” said Rabiha Jamal, 65, a mother of five from Gaza City.

International Reaction and Humanitarian Crisis

The breakdown of the ceasefire sparked international condemnation. Egypt and Qatar, both key mediators, denounced Israel’s assault, while the European Union issued a statement expressing deep concern over the renewed hostilities.

Tom Fletcher, the UN emergency relief coordinator, warned that the “modest gains” made during the ceasefire had now been destroyed.

Meanwhile, Israel has halted aid deliveries into Gaza for over two weeks, worsening an already severe humanitarian crisis.

Despite widespread criticism, U.S. officials placed the blame solely on Hamas.

“Hamas could have released hostages to extend the ceasefire but instead chose refusal and war,” said White House National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes.

Hamas Officials Among the Dead

Hamas confirmed that several high-ranking officials were killed in the latest strikes, including:
🔹 Essam Addalees – De facto head of Hamas’ government
🔹 Ahmed Al-Hetta – Deputy justice minister
🔹 Mahmoud Abu Watfa – Head of Hamas-run security services

Hostage Crisis and Standoff in Truce Talks

Despite the escalating violence, Hamas reaffirmed its willingness to negotiate, claiming Israel had gone back on the deal by blocking humanitarian aid and refusing to engage in talks for a second-phase truce.

Hamas spokesperson Abdel-Latif Al-Qanoua told Reuters:

“We remain committed to implementing the ceasefire agreement as signed, but Israel has refused to proceed with the next phase.”

Israel had pushed for an agreement to extend the truce until after Ramadan and Passover in April, prioritizing the return of the 59 remaining hostages Hamas is still holding from the October 7, 2023 attack, which killed 1,200 Israelis, according to Israeli sources.

Since the war began, Palestinian health authorities report over 48,000 people have been killed in Gaza.

As Israel intensifies its military campaign in Gaza, it has also launched operations in the occupied West Bank, southern Lebanon, and Syria, escalating tensions across the region.

With both sides refusing to back down and civilian casualties mounting, the latest escalation threatens to plunge the region into an even deeper crisis. Will negotiations resume, or is this truly ‘just the beginning’ of another deadly chapter?

MAYNILA.
