Chinese science fiction’s journey from underground magazines to Netflix blockbuster

CHENGDU, China. The spotlight of the science fiction world shone brightly on Chengdu, China, in October 2023 as the city hosted Worldcon, the genre’s largest annual event, for the first time. Fans from across the globe converged, reveling in a celebration of the arts, free from the complexities of China’s diplomatic relations and its tightening controls on expression.

Among the attendees was Tao Bolin, an influencer from Guangdong province, who sensed a newfound global interest in Chinese literature. The event was marked by a sense of unity as fans and authors mingled within the striking confines of the newly unveiled Science Fiction Museum, a creation of the renowned Zaha Hadid Architects, resembling a colossal steel starburst poised over a serene lake.

Yet, the euphoria of the event was short-lived. Months later, controversy clouded the horizon as allegations surfaced suggesting that the organizers of the Hugo Awards, the pinnacle of recognition in the sci-fi realm, had caved to pressure from Chinese censors, disqualifying certain candidates.

This saga encapsulates the tumultuous journey of Chinese science fiction, evolving from a marginalized niche to a thriving cultural export. Over four decades, it has battled political suspicion and navigated geopolitical obstacles. Notably, author Liu Cixin emerged as a global icon, with an international fan base including luminaries like Barack Obama and Mark Zuckerberg.

Now, with a lavish Netflix adaptation of his masterpiece “The Three-Body Problem” slated for release in March, Chinese sci-fi stands at the brink of its widest audience yet.

The trajectory of Chinese science fiction’s international ascent traces back to a pivotal moment three decades ago, when a small group of visionaries, led by Shen Zaiwang, a provincial bureaucrat with a passion for English translation and Jules Verne, embarked on a mission to salvage a writers’ conference amidst global skepticism following the Tiananmen Square crackdown.

Despite decades of suspicion and suppression, the genre resurged in the post-Mao era, with authors like Zheng Wenguang and Ye Yonglie pioneering stories of space exploration. However, political headwinds threatened to snuff out this creative renaissance during the ’80s.

Undeterred, the team behind Science Fiction World, headquartered in Chengdu, persisted, organizing international events and reshaping public perception of the genre. In 2006, the serialization of Liu Cixin’s “The Three-Body Problem” marked a watershed moment, captivating readers both at home and abroad.

Yet, this newfound acclaim didn’t come without controversy. Liu’s work, while celebrated globally, drew criticism for its defense of Chinese government policies, notably in Xinjiang. The recent Hugo Awards scandal further underscored the delicate dance between artistic expression and political sensitivities in China’s cultural landscape.

Nevertheless, the future of Chinese sci-fi appears promising. A new generation of authors, such as Regina Kanyu Wang and Tang Fei, is poised to carry the torch forward, exploring themes of gender identity and environmentalism that resonate with younger audiences.

As tensions persist, proponents like Yao Haijun, editor-in-chief of Science Fiction World, remain steadfast in their belief in the genre’s transcendent power to bridge cultures and foster understanding, even in the face of adversity. As Yao puts it, “As long as there is communication, we’ll be able to find some things in common.”

President Marcos Jr. tells Australia their strategic partnership is more important than ever

MELBOhilippineURNE, Australia. During his address to Australia’s Parliament on Thursday, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. underscored the critical nature of the strategic partnership between the two countries, particularly in light of escalating tensions in the region due to China’s actions in the South China Sea. Marcos reaffirmed the Philippines’ staunch defense of its sovereignty against any foreign encroachment, emphasizing the significance of collaboration between nations in countering common threats to regional stability and the rule of law.

Highlighting historical bonds, Marcos referenced joint wartime experiences, including the tour of the Philippines’ WWII battlefields of Bataan and Corregidor by his father, former President Ferdinand Marcos, and then-Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam in 1974. He also pointed to recent collaborative efforts such as joint sea and air patrols conducted for the first time in November last year.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese echoed Marcos’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of peace for prosperity and the shared responsibility in maintaining regional stability. However, Marcos’s speech was briefly interrupted by Senator Janet Rice’s protest against human rights abuses in the Philippines, leading to her symbolic censure by fellow senators. Despite this interruption, Marcos and Albanese announced new agreements on maritime cooperation, cybersecurity, and fair trade regulation, signaling continued collaboration between the two nations.

Marcos’s visit, which spans two days and ends on Thursday, sets the stage for his return next week for an ASEAN-Australia Summit commemorating 50 years of partnership with Southeast Asian nations, further solidifying ties between the Philippines and Australia in the face of regional challenges.

Israel says it’s still reviewing access to Al Aqsa mosque during Ramadan

JERUSALEM. Israel is reviewing possible curbs on access to Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem over the upcoming Ramadan fasting month, a government spokesperson said after media reports that the far-right minister for police might be overruled on the issue.

Al Aqsa, Islam’s third-holiest shrine, is a focus of Palestinian statehood hopes. The site is also revered by Jews as vestige of their two ancient temples. Israeli controls on access have often stoked political friction, especially during Ramadan.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said last week there would be a quota for members of Israel’s 18% Muslim minority who wish to take part in peace prayers at Al Aqsa.

That would compound the clampdown Israel has already placed on Palestinians since the Hamas’ cross-border rampage from the Gaza Strip on Oct. 7, codenamed “Al Aqsa Flood”, which triggered the ongoing Gaza war.

But Israel’s top-rated Channel 12 TV reported on Wednesday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would overrule Ben-Gvir.

“The specific issue of prayer on the Temple Mount, in Al Aqsa, is currently still under discussion by the cabinet,” government spokesperson Avi Hyman said in a briefing on Thursday.

He added that a final decision would take security and public health, as well as the freedom of worship, into account.

A Ben-Gvir spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment. On Wednesday, Ben-Gvir posted on X that any attempt to override his authority would amount to a “capitulation to terror”, and urged Netanyahu to deny the Channel 12 report.

Pope Francis undergoes CT scan during hospital check-up

0

VATICAN CITY. Pope Francis, 87, made a brief visit to a Roman hospital for medical checks on Wednesday following his ongoing battle with influenza, according to a statement from his office.

The pontiff underwent the checks at the Tiber Island hospital after his weekly general audience, the statement noted, although it did not elaborate on the specifics of the tests.

Sources within the medical field informed Reuters that Pope Francis had a CT scan during his visit. This procedure, which provides detailed internal images of a patient’s body, was previously conducted on the pontiff in November following a bout of influenza.

Television footage captured a Vatican-registered white Fiat, commonly used by Pope Francis, departing the medical facility located in the heart of Rome around midday (1100 GMT).

Earlier in the day, Pope Francis had delegated a reading at his Wednesday weekly audience to an aide, citing his ongoing illness. Addressing the faithful, he acknowledged, “Dear brothers and sisters, I still have a bit of a cold,” before proceeding with a shortened address on the topics of envy and vainglory.

Despite sounding hoarse and experiencing a cough during his speech, Pope Francis concluded the audience by extending greetings to attendees and issuing calls for peace, as is customary.

Pope Francis has faced several health challenges recently, including cancellations of appointments due to mild flu symptoms. Despite addressing crowds in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday to deliver his Angelus message, the pontiff had to cancel a planned trip to a COP28 climate meeting in Dubai in December due to influenza and lung inflammation.

Earlier in January, Pope Francis struggled with a touch of bronchitis during a speech, though he later reported feeling better despite lingering discomfort. Notably, as a young man in Argentina, he underwent surgery to remove part of a lung.

Additionally, the pontiff faces difficulties with walking and often utilizes a wheelchair or cane. On Wednesday, he arrived at his indoor audience in a wheelchair, underscoring his ongoing health concerns.

“Yeah, it’s worrisome because there are two elements to that.

“So that’s the basic principle there, the fishers must be allowed to fish in their traditional fishing grounds which belong in the maritime territory of the Philippines,” dagdag pa ng Pangulo.

Husband, wife buried in active runway at US Airport

0

SAVANNAH, Ga. Amidst the hustle and bustle of aviation activity at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in Georgia, passengers aboard planes might be unaware that they are rolling over generations of history buried beneath one of the runways.

The graves of Richard and Catherine Dotson, alongside those of their family members Daniel Hueston and John Dotson, are situated 6 feet under the tarmac, undisturbed to this day, according to aviation authorities. Notably, Richard and Catherine Dotson’s gravestones mark the path of Runway 10, the airport’s busiest runway.

“The families wished for the graves to remain in place when the westward extension of this east to west runway was required during World War II,” the airport states on its website.

These graves stand as the only ones in the world embedded in an active 9,350-foot runway, serving as a silent testament to history amidst the daily comings and goings of thousands of general and commercial aviation operations each year, as confirmed by airport officials.

“We consider the Dotsons to be part of our airport family, and we’re happy to have markers honoring them as an important part of our history,” remarked airport spokeswoman Lori Lynah to FOX Weather. “It’s always interesting to hear about pilots and passengers alike who’ve heard about the graves and want to learn more about their story.”

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, though classified as a small-sized airport, stands as the second largest of Georgia’s nine commercial airports, following Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The Dotson Family Farm, a site steeped in history, once occupied the space where the airport now stands. Originally known as Cherokee Hills in the 1800s, the farm was owned by the Dotson family, whose remaining grave markers now lie on the western half of the airport’s grounds.

In 1942, the U.S. War Department sought additional facilities for expanding military operations, leading to the acquisition of the land where the airport stands today. This move marked the beginning of a transformation for Chatham Field into a command base and heavy bombardment combat crew training station for the second bomb wing of the Army Air Corps.

As part of this expansion, the Dotson family’s private cemetery was acquired. It was believed to have contained over 100 graves. Subsequently, negotiations between the Dotson family’s great-grandchildren and the federal government led to the relocation of all but four ancestors to Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, according to airport records.

Nobya at officemate, tinitingnang ‘persons of interest’ sa lalaking pugot ang ulo

0

CARMONA CITY, Cavite.
