0

ROSARIO, Cavite.

Navalny’s mother appeals to Putin for son’s dignified burial

0

The mother of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny appealed Tuesday to President Vladimir Putin to intervene and turn her son’s body over to her so she can bury him with dignity.

Lyudmila Navalnaya, who has been trying to get his body since Saturday, appeared in a video outside the Arctic penal colony where Navalny died on Friday.

“For the fifth day, I have been unable to see him. They wouldn’t release his body to me. And they’re not even telling me where he is,” a black-clad Navalnaya said in the video, with the barbed wire of Penal Colony No. 3 in Kharp, about 1,900 kilometers (1,200 miles) northeast of Moscow.

“I’m reaching out to you, Vladimir Putin. The resolution of this matter depends solely on you. Let me finally see my son. I demand that Alexei’s body is released immediately, so that I can bury him like a human being,” she said in the video, which was posted to social media by Navalny’s team.

Russian authorities have said the cause of Navalny’s death is still unknown and refused to release his body for the next two weeks as the preliminary inquest continues, members of his team said.

They accused the government of stalling to try to hide evidence. On Monday, Navalny’s widow, Yulia, released a video accusing Putin of killing her husband and alleged the refusal to release his body was part of a cover-up.

“They are cowardly and meanly hiding his body, refusing to give it to his mother and lying miserably,” she said.

Lyudmila Navalnaya and her son’s lawyers went to law enforcement agencies and the morgue where the body is believed to be held in the Arctic region, but were unable to get them to turn it over or say where it is.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov rejected the allegations of a cover-up, telling reporters that “these are absolutely unfounded, insolent accusations about the head of the Russian state.”

Putin hasn’t commented publicly on Navalny’s death. On Monday, he signed a decree promoting a number of law enforcement and military officials, including Valery Boyarinev, the first deputy chief of the State Penitentiary Service. Boyarinev, who received the rank of colonel-general, has been accused by Navalny’s team of personally ordering restrictions on the opposition leader.

Peskov denied there was any connection between Navalny’s death and the new rank for Boyarinev.

Navalny’s death has deprived the Russian opposition of its best-known and inspiring politician less than a month before an election that is all but certain to give Putin another six years in power. Many Russians had seen Navalny as a rare hope for political change amid Putin’s unrelenting crackdown on the opposition.

In her Monday video, Yulia Navalnaya vowed to continue his fight against the Kremlin. On Tuesday, her account on X, where she had posted the video, was briefly suspended by the platform without explanation but later restored.

In a speech Monday to the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council, she urged EU leaders not to recognize the results of next month’s election, to sanction more Putin allies and to help Russians who flee the country. A copy of her remarks was released Tuesday by Navalny spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh.

Navalny, 47, was imprisoned since January 2021, when he returned to Moscow after recuperating in Germany from a nerve agent poisoning he blamed on the Kremlin. He received three prison terms since then, on charges he rejected as politically motivated.

Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, called for an international investigation of Navalny’s death, but Peskov said the Kremlin would not agree to such a demand.

Since Navalny’s death, about 400 people have been detained across in Russia as they tried to pay tribute to him with flowers and candles, according to OVD-Info, a group that monitors political arrests. Authorities cordoned off some of the memorials to victims of Soviet repression across the country that were being used as sites to leave makeshift tributes to Navalny. Police removed the flowers at night, but more keep appearing.

Peskov said police were acting “in accordance with the law” by detaining people paying tribute to Navalny.

Over 60,000 people have submitted requests to the government asking for Navalny’s remains to be handed over to his relatives, OVD-Info said.

After the last verdict that resulted in a 19-year term, Navalny said he understood he was “serving a life sentence, which is measured by the length of my life or the length of life of this regime.”

In Monday’s video, his widow said: “By killing Alexei, Putin killed half of me, half of my heart and half of my soul.”

“But I still have the other half, and it tells me that I have no right to give up. I will continue the work of Alexei Navalny,” Yulia Navalnaya said.

The keeper of the Vatican’s secrets is retiring. Archbishop Sergio Pagano reveals insights in new book

Archbishop Sergio Pagano, the long-serving prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Archive, is stepping into the limelight as he prepares for retirement. After 45 years of dedicated service, Pagano is ready to share some of the hidden truths he has unearthed within the walls of one of the world’s most renowned repositories of documents.

In an exclusive interview ahead of his retirement, Pagano provided a glimpse into his upcoming book titled “Secretum,” where he promises to unveil a trove of unknown and behind-the-scenes details spanning over 12 centuries of Vatican history. Collaborating with Italian journalist Massimo Franco, Pagano sheds light on various historical events, from Napoleon’s plundering of the archive in 1810 to the intricacies of the Galileo affair and the intriguing 1922 conclave funded by last-minute donations from American Catholics.

“This will be the first and last time,” Pagano remarked, acknowledging that his retirement marks the end of an era. Since its opening to scholars by Pope Leo XIII in 1881, the Vatican Apostolic Archive has served as a reservoir of papal history, housing documents dating back to the 8th century and spanning 85 kilometers of shelving.

Pagano’s tenure witnessed a surge in scholarly interest, particularly concerning the pontificate of Pope Pius XII. Despite ongoing debates surrounding Pius’ actions during World War II, Pagano takes a critical stance, expressing disappointment at the pontiff’s silence on Nazi atrocities even after the war.

While acknowledging the Vatican’s traditional support for the Palestinian cause, Pagano suggests that Pius’ post-war reticence stemmed from concerns about the geopolitical implications of condemning the Holocaust.

Pagano’s revelations extend beyond historical controversies. He criticizes the incomplete research behind Pius’ sainthood cause, highlighting the absence of comprehensive analysis due to reliance on outdated documentation.

Furthermore, Pagano unveils the origins of the financial ties between the Vatican and the U.S. Church, tracing it back to the 1922 conclave’s dire financial situation. He discloses the encrypted telegrams detailing urgent pleas for financial assistance from the American faithful, facilitating the election of Pope Pius XI.

Pagano speculates on the Vatican’s recent rebranding of the archive, suggesting a financial motive aimed at cultivating donations, particularly from the affluent U.S. Church.

Amidst the revelations, Pagano proudly showcases one of the archive’s prized possessions: the original 1530 letter denying King Henry VIII’s annulment request, a pivotal moment in the history of the Anglican Church. Pagano recounts how the document survived Napoleon’s pillaging, concealed within a secret drawer by a predecessor.

As Pagano bids farewell to his illustrious career, his revelations offer a rare glimpse into the Vatican’s hidden past, dispelling myths while inviting further scholarly inquiry into the annals of papal history.

“Divide and conquer strategy siguro galing sa HOR (House of Representatives) dahil sa PI,” ani Ejercito.

“Absolutely untrue. We trust the leadership of Sen Zubiri,” ani Poe.

Why many Argentinians devote their prayers to Evita, the former first lady who died in 1952

In the heart of Buenos Aires, amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, lies a chapel where Ángeles Celerier, like many others, begins her day with a solemn prayer. Amidst the statues of Saint Cajetan and Saint Teresa, Celerier bows her head in reverence, not only to the canonized saints but also to a figure not recognized by the Vatican – Eva Perón.

“For me, she is the saint of the people,” declares Celerier, her voice resonating with conviction.

Across Argentina, Eva Perón, affectionately known as Evita, remains a beacon of hope and inspiration for many. Union members, politicians, and ordinary citizens alike hold her in high esteem, viewing her as a symbol of prosperity and social justice, attributed to the Peronist movement she championed alongside her husband, President Juan Domingo Perón.

Julio Piumato, a prominent human rights director, underscores Evita’s significance, emphasizing her role in dignifying the working class and advancing social justice during her husband’s presidency.

However, Evita’s legacy extends far beyond politics. Her compassion and activism endeared her to the people, earning her the title of “spiritual reservoir of the people,” as Piumato describes. Her visits to the elderly and single mothers, her advocacy for women’s rights, and her charitable endeavors left an indelible mark on Argentine society.

In the eyes of many feminists and social activists, Evita remains a symbol of empowerment and social transformation. Her image adorns flags and banners, serving as a rallying point for those advocating for the marginalized and oppressed.

Yet, Evita’s legacy is not without controversy. Critics point to allegations of corruption and authoritarianism within the Peronist movement, casting doubt on her altruistic motives. Despite such criticisms, her admirers remain steadfast in their devotion, viewing her as a tireless advocate for the downtrodden.

The enduring reverence for Evita transcends generations and political affiliations. For individuals like Rita Cantero and Rafaela Escobar, whose lives were touched by her compassion, Evita embodies the spirit of resilience and compassion that defines the Argentine identity.

As visitors flock to Evita’s grave in Recoleta Cemetery, laying flowers and offering prayers, it becomes evident that her legacy endures, her memory immortalized in the hearts of the Argentine people. In times of uncertainty and adversity, they turn to Evita for solace and inspiration, finding comfort in her enduring legacy of compassion and solidarity.

Evita’s image, imprinted on the 100-peso bills, adorns murals across the country, and her presence is felt in the daily lives of Argentinians. In restaurants like Saint Evita, her altar stands as a testament to her enduring influence. Whether through political activism or personal devotion, Evita’s spirit lives on, shaping the collective consciousness of a nation striving for equality and justice.

Israel’s Rafah deadline raises stakes as Ramadan approaches

0

With Israel’s ultimatum for the release of hostages in the southern Gazan town of Rafah looming closer, tensions in the region are reaching a critical juncture. The impending onset of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan has only served to heighten concerns among Arab leaders, who fear that escalating tensions could lead to widespread unrest.

Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz has warned that unless Hamas frees all hostages held in Gaza by 10 March an offensive will be launched in Rafah.

Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, speaking at the annual Munich Security Conference, underscored the gravity of the situation, warning that the unfolding events in Rafah could have dire consequences for the entire region.

Arab leaders directly involved in the negotiations express deep apprehension about the situation, particularly in the occupied West Bank, where violence has been escalating in recent weeks. Jordan’s Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ayman Safadi highlighted the volatile nature of the West Bank, emphasizing the urgent need for a resolution to the crisis.

Despite ongoing negotiations, efforts to secure the release of hostages remain deadlocked, with Hamas insisting on significant concessions from Israel. The negotiations are complicated by Hamas’s demand for the release of Palestinian prisoners and Israel’s reluctance to accept certain terms.

While both sides acknowledge the benefits of a truce, significant obstacles remain in reaching a comprehensive agreement. Israel faces mounting pressure, including calls from its ally, the United States, to find a viable solution to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Rafah.

Against this backdrop, Egypt has bolstered its border defenses, raising concerns about the potential for a large-scale influx of refugees in the event of a ground operation in Rafah.

As the deadline draws nearer, the focus shifts to finding a diplomatic resolution to the crisis and preventing further escalation in the region. The coming weeks will be critical in determining the trajectory of the conflict and its implications for regional stability.

Taylor Swift donates $100,000 to family of victim in Chiefs parade shooting

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Taylor Swift has extended her support to the family of Lisa Lopez-Galvan, the victim of the tragic shooting incident during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade, by donating $100,000.

On Friday, two separate donations of $50,000 each, made by the singer under her name, were recorded on a GoFundMe page. Swift’s representative confirmed the contributions to Variety, and The Associated Press independently verified the transactions.

Accompanying the donations were heartfelt messages from Swift: “Sending my deepest sympathies and condolences in the wake of your devastating loss. With love, Taylor Swift.”

Lopez-Galvan, 43, lost her life on Wednesday while celebrating the Chiefs’ Super Bowl triumph alongside her husband, young adult son, and numerous fans at Union Station in the city. Known as Lisa G., she hosted “Taste of Tejano” on local radio station KKFI-FM and was deeply embedded in the Kansas City community, recognized as one of the few Latina DJs in the region.

“She was an amazing mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend to so many. We ask that you continue to keep her family in your prayers as we grieve the loss of her life,” stated the GoFundMe description. The fundraiser had garnered over $200,000 in donations by Friday morning.

The shooting also left twenty-two others injured, half of whom were minors. While investigators are still pursuing leads to identify the perpetrators, they suspect a dispute may have triggered the violence. Presently, police have two juveniles in custody and are exploring the involvement of others.

Swift, who is romantically linked with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and attended the Super Bowl on Sunday, was not present at Wednesday’s parade. Currently, she is engaged in a series of performances in Melbourne, Australia, as part of her Eras tour.

The Chiefs assured that all players, coaches, staff, and their families were safe and unharmed following the incident.

BFAR: Bajo de Masinloc ginagamitan ng cyanide ng China, Vietnam upang itaboy mangingisdang Pinoy

0

“At sinasabi, according to Filipino fishermen, ‘yung mga Chinese fishermen, if I am not mistaken, ay gumagamit ng cyanide as well ang mga Vietnamese fishers,” ani Briguera.
