Asteroid to cast rare eclipse on Betelgeuse: Celestial event set to captivate skywatchers worldwide

0

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. An asteroid is set to momentarily cloak one of the night sky’s most prominent stars, Betelgeuse, in a dazzling and unprecedented eclipse. This celestial spectacle is scheduled to unfold late Monday into early Tuesday, offering millions along a narrow path from central Asia to parts of Mexico a rare and fleeting glimpse.

Betelgeuse, a red supergiant in the Orion constellation, will play host to this unique event as it gets obscured by the slowly rotating asteroid, Leona, situated in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

Astronomers are eager to seize this opportunity to learn more about Betelgeuse and the asteroid Leona during the brief 15-second eclipse. A Spanish-led team’s estimation of Leona’s size at approximately 34 miles wide and 50 miles long stems from a prior eclipse of a dimmer star in September.

Lingering uncertainties surround predictions about the size of both the star and the asteroid, adding an element of mystery to the event. It remains uncertain if the asteroid will entirely obscure Betelgeuse, resulting in a total eclipse, or if a captivating “ring of fire” effect will be produced. Astronomers are uncertain about the duration of a potential total eclipse, speculating it could last up to 10 seconds.

Gianluca Masa, astronomer and founder of the Virtual Telescope Project, expresses the intrigue, emphasizing the uncertain outcome of the event. The Virtual Telescope Project will provide a live webcast from Italy, offering a global audience a front-row seat to this extraordinary celestial encounter.

Situated an estimated 700 light-years away, Betelgeuse is visible to the naked eye, with binoculars and small telescopes enhancing the view. The red supergiant, thousands of times brighter and 700 times larger than our sun, holds the potential to stretch beyond Jupiter if it replaced our solar system’s star.

At 10 million years old, Betelgeuse is considerably younger than our sun, leading scientists to anticipate its short-lived existence due to its massive size and rapid material consumption. The star made headlines in 2019 when a significant expulsion of surface material resulted in a dramatic dimming, followed by a rapid return to its previous brightness within six months.

Scientists speculate that Betelgeuse will go supernova in a violent explosion within the next 100,000 years, adding a layer of anticipation to this already captivating celestial event. As skywatchers prepare for the rare eclipse, the universe offers a reminder of its timeless and awe-inspiring wonders.

Federation of Free Farmers: Krisis sa bigas, titindi sa 2024

0

“We are seeing two reasons here, one, because of high imported rice. The high imported rice affects the domestic price, causing the farmgate price of palay to go up. Second, it is possible that our harvest is not that big contrary to the claim of the Department of Agriculture,” ayon sa pahayag ni Montemayor.

“About two to three months from now, what would be our situation especially with the El Niño, our dry season crop in March and April would be affected and it could be worse in July, August and September, during the lean months next year,” dagdag pa ni Montemayor.

Mysterious fish wash-up baffles Japan; Authorities scramble for answers

Japanese shores witness the puzzling phenomenon of hundreds of tons of fish washing ashore, leaving officials in a quandary over the cause.

Earlier this month, the coastal town of Hakodate in Hokkaido was met with an astonishing sight as an estimated 1,200 tonnes of sardines and mackerel formed a silver blanket stretching over a kilometer on the sea’s surface. The spectacle left local officials bewildered, unable to ascertain the reason behind the massive fish wash-up.

This enigma escalated when, on Wednesday, the town of Nakiri, situated hundreds of miles south of Hokkaido on the Pacific coast, grappled with 30 to 40 tonnes of Japanese scaled sardines, locally known as sappa. Fearful of the potential damage to the marine environment due to decomposing fish lowering oxygen levels in the water, local fishers rushed to collect the stranded fish.

“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” remarked a veteran fisher with 25 years of experience in the area. Concerns were raised about potential shifts in the marine ecosystem, given that sappa catches in Nakiri had only started around a year ago.

While experts speculated that the fish might have become stranded after exhausting migratory pursuits or due to sudden drops in water temperature, the exact cause remains elusive. Mikine Fujiwara, a local fisheries official, stated, “The cause is unknown at the moment. We plan to sample the seawater at the site and examine it to uncover the cause.”

A controversial report from the Daily Mail linking the fish wash-up to the release of treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant faced strong rebuke from Japanese government officials. The report suggested a correlation between the phenomenon and the discharge of water containing small amounts of the radioactive isotope tritium into the Pacific. The International Atomic Energy Agency had previously approved the plan, assuring minimal radiological impact.

Japanese fisheries officials expressed concern about “unsubstantiated information” and emphasized the lack of abnormalities in water-monitoring surveys related to the Fukushima plant’s discharged water. China, opposing the release, has been accused of hypocrisy, given its own nuclear plants’ higher tritium levels in wastewater.

As images of the stranded fish circulate on social media, conspiracy theories related to Fukushima gain traction. The Japanese fisheries agency urges caution, emphasizing the absence of scientific evidence supporting these claims. Fishing cooperatives in Fukushima had previously warned about the potential damage to the reputation of their seafood due to the water discharge.

Local authorities in Hakodate issued warnings against consuming the stranded fish, urging residents to refrain from selling or consuming them due to uncertainties surrounding their wash-up. “We don’t know for sure under what circumstances these fish were washed up, so I don’t recommend eating them,” said Takashi Fujioka, a fisheries researcher.

Pope urges global treaty to safeguard ethical use of artificial intelligence

0

ROME. Pope Francis has called for an international treaty to ensure the ethical development and use of artificial intelligence (AI), expressing concerns about the potential risks posed by technology lacking essential human values. In his annual message for the World Day of Peace, the Pope highlighted the importance of compassion, mercy, morality, and forgiveness in AI applications. This call follows the Pope’s personal experience earlier in the year when an AI-generated image of him went viral.

EU Sets Precedent: The Pope’s message coincides with the recent provisional approval of the world’s first comprehensive AI rules by European Union negotiators. These rules are expected to establish a gold standard for governments worldwide considering their own AI regulations.

Balancing Promise and Peril: While acknowledging the promise of AI and technological advances as a manifestation of human creativity, the Pope emphasized the existential concerns raised by ethicists and human rights advocates. The message underlined the need for responsible development that prioritizes fundamental human rights, promotes peace, and guards against issues such as disinformation and discrimination.

Concerns about AI in Armaments: Pope Francis expressed his greatest alarm regarding the use of AI in the armaments sector. He called for meaningful human oversight of Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS), warning against the potential folly of new technologies that could exacerbate the impact of war.

Profound Repercussions on Humanity: The Pope also warned against automated systems that rank and categorize individuals, emphasizing the profound repercussions on humanity. He stressed that algorithms must not dictate the understanding of human rights or eliminate essential human values.

Global Treaty and Oversight: While the Pope did not delve into specific details of a binding treaty, he emphasized the necessity of negotiating such an agreement at a global level. He argued against relying solely on technology companies for self-regulation, drawing parallels with his previous denouncement of multinationals exploiting Earth’s resources.

Common Ethical Ground: Barbara Caputo, a professor at the Turin Polytechnic university’s Artificial Intelligence Hub, highlighted the convergence on fundamental ethical issues and definitions in both the EU’s regulation and the executive order unveiled by U.S. President Joe Biden. This convergence, she noted, establishes a common regulatory base for those involved in AI development.

Pope Francis joins the growing chorus of voices advocating for global regulation to ensure the ethical development and use of artificial intelligence, citing concerns about the potential risks and the need for human values to guide AI applications.

Pope Francis says he wants to be buried in the Rome basilica, not in the Vatican, breaking traditions

0

ROME. Pope Francis has declared his preference to be buried in the Rome basilica of St. Mary Major, a departure from the customary resting place in the Vatican grottoes, expressing a desire to be in proximity to his cherished icon of the Madonna.

Turning 87 on Sunday, Francis dismissed thoughts of resignation despite facing multiple health scares. Confirming a trip to Belgium next year and considering visits to Polynesia and Argentina, he acknowledged the reevaluation of travel plans based on proximity.

In an interview with N+ of Mexican broadcaster Televisa, Francis stated, “It is true that all journeys are now rethought. If they’re close by, they can be done. If they’re farther away, they are rethought. There are limits.” This interview marks his first since recovering from acute bronchitis, which led to the cancellation of a trip to the U.N. climate conference in Dubai.

While affirming the lifelong role of the Pope, Francis reiterated the possibility of resignation, emphasizing the need to prepare for any circumstance. “I ask the Lord to say enough, at some point, but when he wants me to,” he said.

Discussing his potential retirement, Francis expressed a desire to live outside the Vatican in Rome, maintaining a connection to his role as the bishop of Rome and his devotion to an icon of the Virgin Mary in the St. Mary Major basilica.

Sharing his devotion, Francis said, “It’s my great devotion,” revealing his decision to be buried near the basilica, stating, “The place is already prepared.”

Despite health challenges this year, including bronchitis and hospitalization for abdominal surgery, Francis remains determined. Using a wheelchair and cane due to strained knee ligaments, he stands firm in his decisions.

Contrary to the tradition of popes being buried in the grottos of St. Peter’s Basilica, Francis has chosen an unconventional path.

Regarding travel plans, Francis confirmed a pending trip to his native Argentina, invited by the country’s new president, Javier Milei. Addressing past criticisms, Francis, who engaged in a conversation with Milei after his election, exhibited forgiveness.

“In an election campaign, things are said ‘in jest’ — they are said seriously, but they are provisional things, things that are used to create a bit of attention, but which later fall away by themselves,” Francis remarked, urging a distinction between campaign rhetoric and post-election actions.

Francis’ scheduled visit to Belgium, marking the 600th anniversary of the country’s main Catholic universities, has been welcomed by Belgium’s bishops. The details, including the duration of his stay, are yet to be determined.

Japan, negdeklara ng unang monkeypox virus death

0

TOKYO, Japan.

Filipino supply boat successfully delivers Christmas joy, outmaneuvering Chinese vessels

0

A Filipino supply boat carrying Christmas presents for fishers, troops, and coastguard crews successfully evaded interception by Chinese vessels in the disputed South China Sea. The festive flotilla, initially shadowed and forced to turn back, saw a smaller supply boat, ML Chowee, slipping past Chinese vessels to deliver Christmas gifts.

Initially facing the threat of cancellation, the Christmas mission, organized by volunteers to bring joy to those in the South China Sea, encountered obstacles when shadowed and intercepted by four Chinese vessels, including navy ships and a coastguard ship.

Undeterred, the smaller supply boat managed to reach Lawak Island at 5 am on Monday, independent of the main convoy of about 40 festively decorated boats. Rafaela David, an organizer, expressed her joy at the successful delivery, with Christmas presents, including solar lamps, medicines, vitamins, toys, and traditional food packages, reaching their intended recipients.

“At the end of the day, that’s the most crucial aspect of the mission – that we are able to deliver the Christmas gifts,” said David, the president of the Akbayan party, part of the coalition that organized the trip.

Facing frustration and tears from some volunteers on the mother ship when the captain deemed it too dangerous to continue, organizers highlighted the decision was made after being shadowed by Chinese vessels, including navy ships and a coastguard ship.

China’s claim over the South China Sea, disputed by the Philippines, escalated tensions during the mission. The decision to divert attention with a larger festive flotilla while the critical supply boat took an alternative route proved successful.

The delivery follows a tense weekend marked by accusations of “unprovoked acts of coercion and dangerous manoeuvres” by Chinese vessels, resulting in damage to Filipino vessels and equipment. Organizers aimed to send a message of resilience against bullying and to support communities affected by overfishing and harassment.

Despite the challenges, volunteers are determined to continue similar missions in the future, emphasizing the normalization of Filipino presence in the West Philippine Sea.
