Los Angeles races against time to contain wildfires before intense winds return

0

LOS ANGELES. Firefighters in Los Angeles worked tirelessly on Sunday to contain two massive wildfires that had been raging for six days. The effort took advantage of a brief lull in severe weather before high Santa Ana winds threatened to reignite the flames.

The fires have caused catastrophic damage, with California Governor Gavin Newsom calling it possibly the most devastating natural disaster in U.S. history. At least 24 lives have been lost, thousands of homes destroyed, and over 100,000 residents forced to evacuate.

“This is an unimaginable tragedy for Los Angeles County,” said County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath. “Whole neighborhoods have been reduced to smoldering ruins.”

The Palisades Fire, threatening affluent neighborhoods like Brentwood, has scorched 23,713 acres (96 sq km) and is only 13% contained. Meanwhile, the Eaton Fire in the eastern foothills has burned through 14,117 acres (57 sq km), with containment at 27%, up from 15% the previous day.

According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), the Hurst Fire north of the city is now 89% contained, while three other blazes have been fully controlled. However, smoldering hotspots within containment lines continue to pose risks.

Aerial crews have dropped water and fire retardant on advancing flames, while ground teams have worked to hold firelines. “These winds combined with low relative humidities and low fuel moistures will keep the fire threat in all of Los Angeles County very high,” warned Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone.

The Santa Ana winds, which had subsided temporarily, are expected to return Sunday night with gusts of 50 to 70 mph (80 to 112 kph) and persist through Wednesday. These dry, powerful winds have already fanned flames and carried embers miles ahead of the firefront.

The National Weather Service and local officials have warned that evacuation orders could expand to cover all of Los Angeles County’s nearly 10 million residents. Already, more than 100,000 people are under mandatory evacuation orders, with another 87,000 facing evacuation warnings.

“We will not reopen evacuated areas until red flag conditions are lifted on Thursday,” said Marrone.

The fires have claimed 24 lives, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, and caused an estimated $135 billion to $150 billion in damages, according to private forecaster AccuWeather.

Governor Newsom signed an executive order on Sunday to expedite rebuilding efforts, temporarily suspending environmental regulations for destroyed homes and businesses.

Federal assistance has also been mobilized. “Active duty military personnel are ready to support firefighting efforts,” said FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell, urging residents to file for disaster relief.

Amid the devastation, stories of resilience have emerged. Tristin Perez, a resident of Altadena, defied evacuation orders to protect his property and neighbors’ homes. “Your front yard is on fire, palm trees lit up – it looked like something out of a movie,” he said. Perez’s efforts saved his duplex and several neighboring homes, though many across the street were reduced to ashes.

Meanwhile, hundreds of displaced residents sought solace at St. Monica Catholic Church in Santa Monica. Kathleen McRoskey, whose Pacific Palisades church was destroyed, described the experience as healing. “It was the first offer of support that would heal us spiritually and physically and emotionally,” she said.

For evacuees like Zuzana Korda, the uncertainty is overwhelming. Speaking outside a temporary assistance office, Korda revealed her family had no insurance. “We’ve left everything behind. We stand to lose everything,” she said.

As Los Angeles braces for the return of fierce winds, officials and residents alike hope for containment and recovery amid this unprecedented disaster.

Robbie Williams biopic ‘Better Man’: A bold, entertaining ride through the life of a pop icon

Robbie Williams has always been synonymous with entertainment, and his new biopic Better Man encapsulates that very essence. Directed by Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman), the film blends humor, drama, and outlandish creativity to chronicle Williams’ life — from a troubled teen in Stoke-on-Trent, England, to a global pop sensation battling personal demons.

“I came out of the womb with jazz hands,” Williams quips in the film’s opening. “Which was very painful for my mum.” This line sets the tone for the two-hour-plus journey through his highs and lows, narrated and produced by the pop star himself.

A Monkey as a Muse

One of the film’s boldest choices is to portray Williams as a CGI monkey — a representation of how he sees himself. “I want to show you how I really see myself,” Williams says early on, offering a glimpse into the psyche of a man who has often described himself as a performer above all else.

Gracey explains this unique decision came from hours of interviews where Williams likened himself to a “monkey sent out to entertain the masses.” The visual metaphor is central to the narrative, exploring the darker side of fame and self-perception.

From Humble Beginnings to Stardom

The story begins in 1982, with a young Robert Williams struggling in school and finding solace in cabaret. Inspired by his father’s performances, Williams discovered his calling. By age 15, he joined the boy band Take That, where he found instant fame.

One of the film’s most dazzling sequences, set to Williams’ hit “Rock DJ,” showcases the band’s rise to stardom. Filmed on London’s Regent Street with over 500 extras, it’s a spectacle of choreography, pogo sticks, and flash mobs, capturing the band’s meteoric ascent.

Battling Demons and Triumphs

While the fame was exhilarating, it came at a cost. Williams struggled with depression, substance abuse, and the pressures of being in the public eye. After leaving Take That, he was determined to succeed as a solo artist, and he did — achieving monumental success, including a legendary performance at Knebworth Festival for 375,000 fans.

Gracey uses fantastical imagery to depict Williams’ internal battles, including a medieval-style combat between the singer and his “demon” versions. These artistic flourishes make Better Man stand out, though they occasionally veer into indulgence.

A Life Lived to Entertain

At its core, Better Man is a celebration of Williams’ unyielding drive to entertain. Whether through heartfelt musical numbers, dramatic storytelling, or moments of self-reflection, the film captures the essence of a man who defied the odds to carve his place in music history.

The Verdict

Better Man, a Paramount release, is rated R for drug use, pervasive language, sexual content, nudity, and some violent content. It runs 135 minutes and earns three stars out of four for its audacious approach and unwavering commitment to entertaining its audience — much like Robbie Williams himself.

Body of Filipina killed in Slovenia to be repatriated, says DFA

0

MANILA. The remains of a Filipina migrant worker, Marvil Facturan, who was allegedly murdered by her husband in Slovenia, are set to be repatriated to the Philippines, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced on Sunday.

DFA Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega confirmed that the Philippine Embassy in Vienna, which has jurisdiction over Slovenia, is actively coordinating the repatriation efforts. The DFA is covering all costs for the repatriation.

According to Philippine Ambassador to Austria Evangelina Lourdes Arroyo-Bernas, the Slovenian authorities have been “very cooperative” throughout the process. The Philippine Honorary Consul in Bratislava has also played a crucial role in gathering information and ensuring smooth coordination.

Facturan was reportedly killed on December 29 while on vacation in Bled, Slovenia. Her husband, Mitja Kocjancic, has been accused of the crime, as stated in a release by the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) last Friday.

The CFO issued a heartfelt message, saying, “We extend our thoughts and prayers to Marvil’s family. We stand in solidarity with them, condemning acts of domestic violence, seeking justice for our kababayan, and honoring the beautiful life she lived.”

The tragic incident has drawn widespread condemnation and renewed calls to address domestic violence. The DFA assured the public of its commitment to assisting Facturan’s family during this difficult time while working closely with Slovenian authorities to seek justice for her death.

Thai rice fields turned into stunning art featuring red dragon and feline deity

CHIANG RAI, Thailand. A sprawling rice paddy in northern Thailand has been transformed into a breathtaking canvas of vibrant art, featuring a red dragon, a local feline deity, and depictions of dogs and cats. Tanyapong Jaikham and his team created this living masterpiece as a tribute to the devastating floods that struck Chiang Rai and nearby areas in September, leaving thousands stranded.

Spanning over 2 hectares (5 acres), the intricate designs were meticulously planned using artificial intelligence to plot and refine the outlines, and GPS technology to mark precise planting coordinates. Around 20 kilograms (45 pounds) of rainbow rice seeds were used to bring the images to life.

Tanyapong, who began the project in October, explained the symbolic choice of the dragon and the local four-eared, five-eyed feline deity. “We designed the dragon to carry away all the negativity, hoping this crisis would soon pass,” he said. The inclusion of dogs and cats represents the animals trapped and waiting for rescue during the severe flooding that submerged parts of northern Thailand.

Since the artwork’s debut in December, thousands of visitors, including students, families, and local residents, have flocked to the rice fields to witness the stunning imagery and draw inspiration from its message of hope and resilience.

Farmer Tanet Mala, reflecting on the impact of the floods, shared, “We couldn’t make a living at all. Everything was like a sea.”

This unique blend of agriculture and art celebrates the community’s recovery and highlights the creative spirit that thrives even in the face of adversity.

Trudeau dismisses Trump’s talk of annexing Canada as a distraction tactic

0

OTTAWA. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has dismissed U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s recent comments about possibly annexing Canada as a negotiation tactic meant to shift focus from the economic impact of proposed tariffs.

Trump suggested on Tuesday that he might use economic leverage to acquire Canada, while also reaffirming plans to impose 25% tariffs on all Canadian imports unless Ottawa significantly enhances border security.

“What I think is happening in this is President Trump, who is a very skillful negotiator, is getting people to be somewhat distracted by that conversation,” Trudeau told CNN on Wednesday when questioned about Trump’s remarks.

Trudeau highlighted the potential consequences of Trump’s tariff threats, stating, “Oil and gas and electricity and steel and aluminum and lumber and concrete and everything the American consumers buy from Canada (are) suddenly going to get a lot more expensive if he moves forward on these tariffs.”

Earlier this week, Trudeau firmly ruled out the possibility of Canada becoming part of the United States, saying there was “not a snowball’s chance in hell” of such an outcome. Speaking to CNN, he reiterated that Canada would respond with countermeasures if Trump pursued the tariffs.

Trudeau recalled Canada’s retaliation during a 2018 trade dispute when Ottawa imposed tariffs on a range of U.S. goods, including Heinz ketchup, playing cards, bourbon, and Harley-Davidson motorcycles, targeting items that would impact American workers.

“But we don’t want to do that because it drives up prices for Canadians and it harms our closest trading partner,” Trudeau added, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a cooperative economic relationship between the two nations.

The Canadian Prime Minister’s remarks come amidst heightened trade tensions and underscore Ottawa’s commitment to defending its economic interests while avoiding unnecessary harm to both Canadian and American consumers.

Trump’s comments have sparked widespread criticism, with many viewing the idea of annexation as far-fetched and provocative. Analysts suggest the remarks are part of Trump’s broader strategy to pressure Canada into aligning with his border security demands.

The looming threat of tariffs and the ongoing rhetoric have cast uncertainty over the future of U.S.-Canada trade relations. Observers are closely monitoring whether negotiations between the two governments will lead to a resolution or escalate further.

As the situation unfolds, both countries face significant economic stakes, with Canada poised to defend its sovereignty and trade interests on the global stage.

Joseph Aoun elected president: Lebanon’s shifting political landscape reveals a weakened Hezbollah

0

BEIRUT. Lebanon’s parliament has elected army chief Joseph Aoun as the country’s president, filling a long-vacant position and highlighting the diminished influence of Hezbollah following its setbacks in last year’s war with Israel.

Aoun, 60, a general with strong U.S. backing, secured the presidency during Thursday’s parliamentary session. In his acceptance speech, Aoun vowed to uphold Lebanon’s sovereignty by ensuring that “the state has the exclusive right to carry arms,” a remark that earned a standing ovation from many lawmakers while Hezbollah representatives sat in silence.

“Today, a new phase in the history of Lebanon begins,” Aoun declared. He pledged to rebuild southern Lebanon and other regions devastated by Israeli strikes while promising to prevent future Israeli aggression. His presidency, he emphasized, marks a turning point for a nation grappling with severe economic and political crises.

The election underscores a significant power shift in Lebanon and the Middle East. Hezbollah, a Shi’ite group backed by Iran, has faced mounting challenges, including its weakened standing after the 2023 war with Israel and the ousting of its ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

This development also signals a resurgence of Saudi Arabia’s influence in Lebanon, which had long been overshadowed by Iranian dominance. Following Aoun’s election, Saudi leaders, including King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, extended their congratulations.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar expressed hopes for regional stability, stating on X (formerly Twitter): “I hope this election will contribute to stability and good neighborly relations.”

The presidency, traditionally reserved for a Maronite Christian in Lebanon’s sectarian power-sharing system, had remained vacant since Michel Aoun’s term ended in October 2022. Joseph Aoun clinched the position with 99 votes in a second-round ballot, surpassing the required 86-vote threshold, after Hezbollah and its Shi’ite ally, the Amal Movement, ultimately backed him.

Hezbollah lawmaker Mohammed Raad explained the delay in endorsing Aoun, saying, “We are the guardians of national consensus.”

Aoun’s candidacy gained momentum when Hezbollah’s preferred candidate, Suleiman Frangieh, withdrew his bid and endorsed the general. This shift followed intense lobbying by French, Saudi, and U.S. envoys, who emphasized that international financial aid was contingent on resolving Lebanon’s leadership crisis.

“There is a very clear message from the international community that they are ready to support Lebanon, but that needs a president and a government,” said Christian lawmaker Michel Mouawad, who voted for Aoun.

The French government hailed Aoun’s election as a critical step towards restoring Lebanon’s governance. “This election must now be followed by the appointment of a strong government capable of carrying out the reforms necessary for Lebanon’s economic recovery, stability, security, and sovereignty,” French Foreign Ministry spokesman Christophe Lemoine stated.

Lebanon’s economic challenges remain severe, with the World Bank estimating $8.5 billion in damages from the recent conflict. Much of the destruction is in Shi’ite-majority areas where Hezbollah maintains significant support.

Joseph Aoun has already played a pivotal role in securing a ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel, brokered by Washington and Paris in November. The agreement included provisions for the Lebanese army to deploy in southern Lebanon as both Israeli and Hezbollah forces withdrew.

While some critics accused foreign powers of manipulating the election, Christian lawmaker Melhem Riachi described the outcome as a new chapter for Lebanon. “This is the era of Lebanon’s harmony with the international community,” he said.

With Lebanon’s presidency now filled, Aoun must navigate the complex process of forming a government. The road ahead will require careful diplomacy to restore stability and address the country’s mounting economic and political challenges.

Los Angeles wildfires devour thousands of homes as firefighters brace for more challenges

0

LOS ANGELES. Two massive wildfires engulfing Los Angeles from the east and west have destroyed nearly 10,000 homes and structures as they continued to rage into a third night on Thursday. While fierce winds eased temporarily, giving firefighters a brief reprieve, authorities warned of worsening conditions.

The Palisades Fire, located between Santa Monica and Malibu, and the Eaton Fire near Pasadena have scorched a combined 34,000 acres (13,750 hectares), equivalent to about 53 square miles, making them the most destructive wildfires in Los Angeles history. Entire neighborhoods have been reduced to ash, and officials estimate the destruction will grow further.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna confirmed seven fatalities across the affected areas but noted, “It looks like an atomic bomb dropped in these areas. I don’t expect good news, and we’re not looking forward to those numbers,” as search teams prepare to assess the full extent of the devastation.

Local authorities report that the Eaton Fire has damaged or destroyed 4,000 to 5,000 structures, while the Palisades Fire has consumed another 5,300.

Private forecaster AccuWeather estimated the economic loss and damage at an astounding $135 billion to $150 billion, signaling a long road to recovery and a likely spike in homeowners’ insurance costs.

President Joe Biden, who declared a major disaster in California on Tuesday, assured federal support by pledging 100% reimbursement for recovery efforts over the next 180 days. These funds will cover debris removal, hazard mitigation, temporary shelters, and salaries for first responders.

“I told the governor and local officials to spare no expense to do what they need to do to contain these fires,” Biden said during a meeting with senior advisers at the White House.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass vowed to “aggressively rebuild the city of Los Angeles,” amidst criticisms from political figures, including President-elect Donald Trump, regarding her management of the crisis.

Five wildfires are currently active in Los Angeles County, with aerial firefighting units battling flames on hills and valleys. A new blaze, the Kenneth Fire, erupted near Calabasas, rapidly expanding to 960 acres (388 hectares) and further straining emergency resources.

A countywide evacuation alert was mistakenly issued, intended only for those near the Kenneth Fire. Officials quickly corrected the error, but the incident added to residents’ anxiety.

In the Pacific Palisades area, survivors returned to find their once-luxurious homes reduced to rubble. Brick chimneys stood amid charred remains of houses and vehicles. “We are alive. That’s all that matters,” said Bilal Tukhi, a private security guard who compared the devastation to his war-torn homeland of Afghanistan.

Schools remain closed as smoke and ash blanket the city, leaving the air hazardous to breathe. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho announced classes would be suspended for a second day on Friday.

The Eaton Fire threatened the historic Mount Wilson Observatory, where astronomer Edwin Hubble made groundbreaking discoveries about the universe. Fortunately, officials reported, “The flare-up of the Eaton Fire near the Observatory seems to be under control for now.”

Relief operations are gaining momentum, with firefighter reinforcements arriving from neighboring U.S. states and Canada. “To our American neighbors: Canada’s here to help,” said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Philanthropic efforts are also underway, with actor Jamie Lee Curtis pledging $1 million to relief operations. Chef Jose Andres, known for disaster relief initiatives, set up a food truck to provide meals near the Palisades Fire Zone. “Everybody needs support and love in these moments, wealthy or not, poor or not,” Andres remarked.

While progress was made in containing smaller fires, including the Sunset Fire in Hollywood Hills, officials warned of red flag conditions persisting until Friday afternoon. With winds expected to intensify, Los Angeles remains on edge as firefighters and residents brace for the next chapter in this ongoing catastrophe.

Ikalawang taas-presyo ng petrolyo sa 2025, inaasahan

MAYNILA.

  • Gasolina: ₱0.40 hanggang ₱0.70 kada litro
  • Diesel: ₱0.45 hanggang ₱0.75 kada litro
  • Kerosene: ₱0.65 hanggang ₱0.75 kada litro

German chancellor criticizes Elon Musk’s endorsement of far-right AfD party

BERLIN. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has downplayed Elon Musk’s personal attacks on him but expressed serious concern over the billionaire’s public endorsement of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party ahead of the country’s early parliamentary elections on February 23, 2025.

In an interview with Stern magazine, Scholz addressed Musk’s recent criticisms and endorsement of the AfD, stating, “You have to stay cool.” He dismissed Musk’s insults, including being called a “fool” after his three-party coalition government collapsed in November, as typical of “rich media entrepreneurs who do not appreciate social democratic politics and do not hold back with their opinions.”

However, Scholz voiced alarm over Musk’s political involvement, particularly his support for the AfD. “I find it much more worrying than such insults that Musk is supporting a party like the AfD, which is in parts right-wing extremist, which preaches rapprochement with Putin’s Russia and wants to weaken transatlantic relations,” the chancellor said.

Musk’s Political Endorsement Sparks Backlash

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors and a known ally of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, recently stirred controversy by penning an opinion piece for the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag in which he described the AfD as “the last spark of hope for this country.” Musk justified his involvement, stating that his investments in Germany gave him the right to comment on its political state.

The endorsement caused upheaval within the German media, prompting the resignation of Welt am Sonntag opinion editor Eva Marie Kogel in protest. Musk’s comments have been widely criticized, particularly by political figures.

Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Robert Habeck, the Green Party’s candidate for chancellor, delivered a stern warning to Musk. “Hands off our democracy, Mr. Musk!” Habeck told Spiegel magazine. “The combination of enormous wealth, control over information and networks, the use of artificial intelligence, and the willingness to ignore rules is a frontal attack on our democracy.”

AfD Gains Momentum Amid Political Turmoil

Germany’s early parliamentary election comes after the collapse of Scholz’s coalition government, which struggled to agree on strategies to revitalize the stagnating economy. The AfD, a far-right party often criticized for its extremist rhetoric, has been polling strongly but remains politically isolated. Other parties have ruled out forming a coalition with the AfD, making it unlikely that its candidate for chancellor, Alice Weidel, will ascend to the top position.

As Germany braces for the upcoming elections, Musk’s unexpected intervention has amplified debates about foreign influence and the role of wealth and technology in shaping democratic processes.

This story continues to develop as German leaders call for the integrity of the country’s electoral system to be preserved.
