AFP to conduct background checks on Eleksyon 2025 candidates

MANILA. The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced on Thursday its plan to carry out comprehensive background checks on candidates running in the May 12, 2025 elections. The initiative aims to ensure the integrity of the electoral process by identifying potential security risks, including threats of foreign interference and malign influence.

“This initiative is conducted in coordination with the Comelec and PNP and focuses on identifying potential security threats arising from foreign interference and malign influence,” the AFP said in an official statement.

The AFP clarified that all intelligence gathering will be conducted impartially and in strict adherence to the democratic process. “The AFP’s role is strictly nonpartisan. Our efforts are anchored on impartiality and respect for the democratic process,” it emphasized.

Any findings from the background checks will be confidentially submitted to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for appropriate action.

Meanwhile, the Comelec reiterated that candidates with cases deemed final and executory by the en banc are excluded from the ballot. However, those with pending cases or decisions are still eligible to run.

The AFP assured the public that its efforts would focus solely on safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process, fostering a secure and fair environment for the upcoming elections.

Unprecedented wildfires devastate Hollywood Hills and Greater Los Angeles

0

LOS ANGELES. A series of catastrophic wildfires have engulfed Los Angeles, ravaging the Hollywood Hills and pushing deep into the city’s iconic neighborhoods, leaving a trail of destruction and heartbreak.

The fires, described as the worst in the city’s history, erupted on Tuesday and have since formed a massive crescent of flames encircling Los Angeles. This fiery siege, visible even from space, has forced the evacuation of over 100,000 residents and claimed the lives of at least five individuals, according to officials.

“This firestorm is the big one,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated during a press conference after cutting short an official trip to Ghana to address the crisis at home.

Hollywood Hills Ablaze

The Sunset Fire, one of six separate wildfires currently burning in Los Angeles County, has consumed the Hollywood Hills area, just above the world-famous Hollywood Boulevard and its Walk of Fame. Evacuation orders were issued for residents within the area bordered by Hollywood Boulevard, Mulholland Drive, the 101 Freeway, and Laurel Canyon Boulevard. Home to historic landmarks and celebrity residences, these locations have suffered significant damage.

Actor Billy Crystal and his wife, Janice, confirmed that their longtime home in Pacific Palisades was destroyed. “We are heartbroken, of course, but with the love of children and friends, we will get through this,” Crystal shared in a statement.

Media personality Paris Hilton expressed her devastation after watching her beachfront Malibu house “burn to the ground on live TV.” Similarly, actor James Woods recounted his escape, saying, “One day you’re swimming in the pool, and the next day it’s all gone.” In an emotional interview, Woods broke down while sharing a story about his niece, who salvaged her Yeti piggy bank, saying it was for rebuilding their home.

Pacific Palisades in Ruins

The Palisades Fire, which erupted on the west side of Los Angeles, has consumed over 15,832 acres (6,406 hectares) and hundreds of structures. It spread rapidly through Topanga Canyon, reaching the Pacific Ocean.

Scenes of devastation were widespread, with residents returning to neighborhoods reduced to smoldering ruins. “I had just come from my family home where my mother lives—it was burned to a crisp. Then I came up to my home, and it’s the same thing,” said Oliver Allnatt, 36, as he surveyed the ash and rubble of his property. “Basically just a chimney stack and a pile of ash. I mean, it’s something out of a movie.”

A City Under Siege

In Pasadena, Kevin Williams fled his home as gas canisters began exploding nearby. “The wind whipped up, the flames were about 30 or 40 feet high, and you hear ‘pop, pop, pop.’ It sounded like a war zone,” he said.

Thousands of evacuees have sought refuge in temporary shelters, such as the gym of the Westwood Recreation Center. Among them is Foad Farid, who arrived with nothing but his car and phone. Local residents have rallied to provide essential supplies, including blankets, food, and water.

Jeff Harris, owner of a food truck, joined relief efforts by distributing meals to displaced residents. “I’m just here to help,” Harris stated.

Firefighting Efforts Stretched Thin

Exhausted firefighting crews are battling against the odds as dry, hurricane-force Santa Ana winds continue to fan the flames. Officials reported that at least three of the fires, including the massive conflagrations on Los Angeles’ eastern and western flanks, remain at “0% containment.”

Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone confirmed that firefighting resources are being reinforced with crews from six other U.S. states and 250 additional engine companies from Northern California. However, water shortages have hampered efforts, with some hydrants running dry in upscale neighborhoods like Pacific Palisades.

“We pushed the system to the extreme. We’re fighting a wildfire with urban water systems,” said Janisse Quinones, chief executive of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

Historic Natural Disaster

The fires have struck Southern California during an arid period, with months of no significant rainfall. Compounding the crisis are the powerful Santa Ana winds, which continue to drive the fires over hilltops and through canyons.

“We’re facing a historic natural disaster. And I think that can’t be stated strong enough,” said Kevin McGowan, director of emergency management for Los Angeles County.

As aerial footage by KTLA revealed block after block of destroyed homes, the orange glow of new fires served as a grim reminder of the ongoing threat. Despite predictions of calmer winds overnight, “red flag” conditions are expected to persist until Friday, prolonging what many call one of the darkest chapters in Los Angeles’ history.

Election gun ban, ipatutupad simula Enero 12 hanggang Hunyo 11, 2025

MAYNILA.

Over 400 rescued after Tibet earthquake leaves scores dead and missing

0

BEIJING. More than 400 individuals trapped under rubble have been rescued following a powerful magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck Tibet’s Tingri County on Tuesday, Chinese authorities reported. The disaster has left at least 126 people dead and 188 injured, with an unknown number still unaccounted for.

The earthquake, one of the most severe in the region in recent years, rocked the Himalayan foothills and caused widespread destruction. Its epicenter was located approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Mount Everest, impacting neighboring countries Nepal, Bhutan, and India.

The United States Geological Survey revealed that the tremor caused parts of the terrain around the epicenter to shift by as much as 1.6 meters (5.2 feet) over an 80-kilometer stretch. According to the China Earthquake Networks Centre, the quake’s force also triggered hundreds of aftershocks, with magnitudes reaching up to 4.4.

Rescue efforts are in a race against time as sub-zero temperatures in the high-altitude region threaten the lives of survivors still trapped. Overnight, temperatures plummeted to as low as -18 degrees Celsius (0 degrees Fahrenheit). Experts warn that individuals exposed to such conditions risk rapid hypothermia and may survive only five to ten hours without immediate assistance.

The destruction has been particularly severe in Tibet. Early assessments revealed that 3,609 homes were destroyed in Shigatse, a region home to 800,000 people. Footage aired on state broadcaster CCTV showed rows of blue and green tents set up to shelter those displaced.

State media reported that over 30,000 individuals have been relocated, while more than 1,800 emergency rescue personnel and 1,600 soldiers have been deployed to assist in the affected areas.

The damage was extensive in Tingri, the most populous county in Tibet and home to around 60,000 residents. Despite the widespread destruction, state media confirmed that Shigatse’s iconic Tashilhunpo Monastery, founded in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama, was spared from damage.

Condolences poured in from around the globe, including messages from the 14th Dalai Lama, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te.

On the Nepali side of the border, German climber Jost Kobusch described the terrifying moment the earthquake struck. “I’m climbing Everest in the winter by myself, and… it looks like basically I’m the only mountaineer there. At the base camp, there’s nobody,” he told Reuters in a video call.

Kobusch, who was above Everest’s base camp at the time, said his tent shook violently, and he witnessed avalanches crashing down nearby. Fortunately, he escaped unscathed and has since begun his descent to Kathmandu.

The disaster has reignited concerns about the region’s vulnerability to earthquakes, which result from the ongoing collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Over the past five years, 29 earthquakes with magnitudes of 3.0 or higher have been recorded within 200 kilometers of Tuesday’s epicenter.

China has faced devastating earthquakes in the past, including the 8.0-magnitude Sichuan earthquake in 2008 that claimed at least 70,000 lives and the catastrophic 1976 Tangshan earthquake, which killed over 240,000 people.

As rescue operations continue, the true extent of Tuesday’s disaster is yet to be fully realized, leaving affected communities in Tibet and surrounding regions grappling with the aftermath.

Pope Francis names first woman to lead major Vatican office, making history

ROME. Pope Francis has appointed Sister Simona Brambilla as the first woman to head a major Vatican office, marking a significant step in his efforts to increase women’s leadership roles within the Catholic Church.

Sister Simona Brambilla, a 59-year-old Italian nun, and member of the Consolata Missionaries religious order, will serve as the prefect of the Dicastery for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, the department responsible for overseeing all Catholic religious orders. This office governs the world’s 600,000 Catholic nuns and 129,000 priests who belong to religious orders, making it one of the most important within the Vatican.

The Vatican Media described the appointment as unprecedented, headlining its report: “Sister Simona Brambilla is the first woman prefect in the Vatican.” This groundbreaking decision comes as part of Pope Francis’ ongoing reform efforts to broaden women’s roles in Vatican governance.

While women have held second-in-command positions in other Vatican offices, Brambilla is the first woman to lead a dicastery. Her appointment was made possible by the pope’s 2022 reform of the Holy See’s founding constitution, which allowed laypeople, including women, to head such departments.

Brambilla’s new role comes with significant challenges, including addressing the steady decline in the number of nuns worldwide. According to Vatican statistics, the number of Catholic nuns has dropped by approximately 10,000 annually, from 750,000 in 2010 to 600,000 in 2022.

Brambilla, a trained nurse and former missionary in Mozambique, previously served as the superior of her Consolata order from 2011 to 2023. In 2023, Pope Francis appointed her as secretary of the religious orders department, a role in which she gained valuable experience for her new position.

Brambilla’s appointment has been widely praised, though it also drew some criticism. Boston College theology professor Thomas Groome celebrated the milestone: “It should be a woman. Long ago it should have been, but thank God. It’s a small step, but symbolically, it shows an openness and a new horizon or possibility.”

Groome also suggested that nothing theologically prevents Pope Francis from naming Brambilla a cardinal, as cardinals are not required to be ordained priests. However, in an apparent compromise, Pope Francis simultaneously appointed a co-leader, Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime, as “pro-prefect.” This dual leadership reflects ongoing theological debates about women’s roles in the Catholic hierarchy.

Natalia Imperatori-Lee, chair of the religion and philosophy department at Manhattan University, expressed initial excitement but noted her disappointment about the co-prefect appointment. “One day, I pray, the church will see women for the capable leaders they already are. It’s ridiculous to think she needs help running a Vatican dicastery,” she remarked.

Brambilla’s appointment is part of a broader trend under Pope Francis, who has increased the percentage of women in Vatican leadership positions from 19.3% in 2013 to 23.4% today, with 26% of roles in the Curia held by women.

Other women in leadership include Sister Raffaella Petrini, secretary general of Vatican City State, and Barbara Jatta, the director of the Vatican Museums. Additionally, Sister Nathalie Becquart serves as under-secretary in the synod of the bishops’ office, and Sister Alessandra Smerilli holds the No. 2 position in the Vatican’s development office.

While Pope Francis has upheld the ban on the ordination of female priests and deacons, Brambilla’s appointment signals his commitment to expanding women’s influence in church governance.

This landmark decision marks a turning point in the Vatican’s history and sets a precedent for greater inclusion of women in positions of power within the Catholic Church.

US Congress certifies Trump’s election victory with Harris presiding

0

WASHINGTON. The U.S. Congress officially certified Republican President-elect Donald Trump’s election victory on Monday in a joint session presided over by Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris. This certification marks a significant moment in U.S. political history, with Harris fulfilling her ceremonial role despite her defeat in the November election.

The quadrennial ritual, which clears the way for Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20, proceeded smoothly, in stark contrast to the events of Jan. 6, 2021. On that day, a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in a failed attempt to block the certification of then-President Trump’s loss to Democratic President Joe Biden.

“Peaceful Transfer of Power”

Harris, known for her warm public demeanor, adopted a stoic posture as she presided over the roll call of states in the Senate chamber. She calmly handed off the certificates of electoral votes for Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance.

Speaking to reporters afterward, Harris reflected on the day’s significance:
“Today was obviously a very important day, and it was about what should be the norm and what the American people should be able to take for granted, which is that one of the most important pillars of our democracy is that there will be a peaceful transfer of power,” she said. “I do believe very strongly that American democracy is only as strong as our willingness to fight for it.”

Harris’s remarks come as Trump continues to falsely claim that his 2020 election loss to Biden was due to widespread voter fraud. Throughout his 2024 campaign, Trump raised similar concerns but ultimately secured victory on Nov. 5 against Harris.

Trump Hails “Great Election Victory”

The certified Electoral College vote count confirmed Trump’s victory with 312 votes to Harris’s 226. On his social media platform Truth Social, Trump celebrated:
“Congress certifies our great election victory today – a big moment in history. MAGA!”

The joint session unfolded despite a winter storm blanketing Washington, D.C., with six inches (15 cm) of snow, causing travel disruptions. Security at the Capitol was noticeably heightened, with metal barricades encircling the grounds and checkpoints manned by police officers. Inside, additional U.S. Capitol Police teams monitored access points, including underground tunnels.

Republicans Dominate Congress and the White House

November’s elections also handed Republicans control of both chambers of Congress, with a majority in the Senate and a narrow edge in the House. This consolidation of power positions Trump to advance his agenda, which includes significant tax cuts and a crackdown on illegal immigration.

House Democrats, led by Minority Whip Katherine Clark, refrained from challenging the certification. In a statement earlier in the day, Clark emphasized the importance of upholding democratic norms:
“We must renew our commitment to safeguarding American democracy. As elected leaders, our loyalty must be to the Constitution, first and always. We are here to honor the will of the people and the rule of law.”

Tensions Over Jan. 6 Legacy

As security remained tight, the shadow of the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot loomed large. Trump has expressed plans to pardon some of the more than 1,500 individuals charged for their roles in the attack, where rioters chanted “Hang Mike Pence,” referring to Trump’s then-vice president. The assault caused over $2.8 million in damages and led to multiple officer injuries, with some deaths occurring in the aftermath.

The certification session, while ceremonial, underscores the resilience of American democracy, even in the face of deep political divisions and the memories of past upheavals.

Japanese woman, world’s oldest person at 116, passes away

TOKYO. Tomiko Itooka, a Japanese woman recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest person, has passed away at the age of 116, an official from Ashiya City confirmed on Saturday.

According to Yoshitsugu Nagata, an official overseeing elderly welfare, Itooka died on December 29 at a care facility in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture, central Japan.

Born on May 23, 1908, Itooka held the title of the world’s oldest person following the death of 117-year-old Maria Branyas last year, as verified by the Gerontology Research Group.

When informed of her recognition as the world’s oldest living person, Itooka humbly responded, “Thank you.”

A Life Marked by Vitality and Simplicity

Known for her love of bananas and the yogurt-flavored Japanese drink Calpis, Itooka celebrated her 116th birthday last year with flowers, a cake, and a card from the mayor of Ashiya.

Born in Osaka, she was a volleyball player during her high school years and was admired for her active lifestyle. Nagata shared that Itooka even climbed Mount Ontake (3,067 meters or 10,062 feet) twice during her lifetime.

She married at the age of 20, raising two daughters and two sons, and played a vital role in managing her husband’s textile factory during World War II. After her husband died in 1979, Itooka chose to live independently in Nara until her later years.

Family and Legacy

Itooka is survived by one son, one daughter, and five grandchildren. A funeral service was held privately with family and close friends, according to Nagata.

The New Oldest Living Person

Following Itooka’s passing, the title of the world’s oldest living person now belongs to 116-year-old Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas, who was born just 16 days after Itooka, according to the Gerontology Research Group.

Itooka’s remarkable life stands as a testament to longevity and resilience, inspiring many with her vitality and humble spirit.

China’s ‘monster ship’ spotted near Lubang Island, Occidental Mindoro

0

MANILA. The Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) vessel 5901, also known as the “monster ship,” was monitored near Lubang Island in Occidental Mindoro on Monday morning, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).

PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea (WPS), Commodore Jay Tarriela, provided details during an interview with Super Radyo dzBB:
“Two days ago, na-monitor natin siya sa coastline ng Zambales, sa Capones Island, Zambales. Yesterday, umangat na siya sa northern part ng Zambales. Ngayong umaga, as we speak, it is 80 nautical miles away from Lubang Island, Occidental Mindoro,” said Tarriela.

On Saturday, the “monster ship” was first spotted 54 nautical miles off Capones Island, Zambales. This location is well within the Philippines’ 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

In response, the PCG deployed BRP Cabra, a helicopter, and the PCG Caravan aircraft to monitor the vessel’s movements. The PCG also challenged the Chinese ship, asserting that its presence was within the Philippine EEZ.

The PCG emphasized that the vessel’s presence is likely intended to intimidate Filipino fishermen in the area, although no harassment has been reported so far.

In a separate incident, the Philippine Navy is currently examining an underwater drone discovered in San Pascual, Masbate, on the eastern side of the country.

The drone’s ownership and capabilities remain undetermined, but the PCG noted that China has deployed underwater drones within the Philippine EEZ in the past.

The presence of the Chinese Coast Guard’s largest and most advanced vessel, often dubbed a “monster ship” due to its intimidating size and capability, has raised further concerns over China’s aggressive actions in the West Philippine Sea.

The Philippine Coast Guard and Navy are continuing their efforts to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty and maritime resources.

Malakihang oil price hike, epektibo bukas

MAYNILA.
