Tech billionaire completes first private spacewalk with SpaceX

0

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. In a groundbreaking achievement, tech billionaire Jared Isaacman performed the first-ever private spacewalk on Thursday, venturing hundreds of miles above Earth in a daring mission typically reserved for professional astronauts.

Isaacman, founder and CEO of Shift4 Payments, partnered with SpaceX to test the company’s newly designed spacesuits during a five-day flight. This spacewalk marked a significant milestone in private space exploration, underscoring the growing role of commercial space ventures in pushing the boundaries of space travel.

“Back at home, we all have a lot of work to do. But from here, it sure looks like a perfect world,” Isaacman said as the spacecraft soared above the South Pacific. Cameras captured his silhouette framed by the vast expanse of blue Earth beneath him.

Unlike the typical spacewalks conducted by NASA astronauts, which often involve complex repairs on the sprawling International Space Station (ISS) and last up to eight hours, Isaacman’s mission was brief but significant. The hatch was open for less than two hours, and Isaacman remained attached to the capsule the entire time, flexing his arms and legs to test the durability and flexibility of the new spacesuit. His movements were monitored by SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis, who followed Isaacman in stepping out of the spacecraft to perform similar tests.

“Today’s success represents a giant leap forward for the commercial space industry,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson posted on X (formerly Twitter) after the mission.

Isaacman’s crew, which included Gillis, Scott “Kidd” Poteet, a former Air Force Thunderbird pilot, and SpaceX engineer Anna Menon, launched from Florida on Tuesday, aiming to reach an orbit higher than any other space mission since NASA’s moon landings. Their initial orbit of 460 miles (740 kilometers) was later reduced for the spacewalk.

The mission, dubbed Polaris Dawn, is part of a larger program funded by Isaacman, who has committed to a series of privately financed spaceflights with SpaceX. This particular flight focused on testing new equipment and exploring the potential for future spacewalks during longer space missions, including trips to Mars.

Despite a few minor issues, such as manually opening the hatch and slight bulges in the hatch seal, the spacewalk was completed without incident.

Isaacman’s mission is seen as a pivotal moment in the advancement of commercial space travel, a rapidly growing industry that has already seen wealthy individuals pay millions of dollars for brief trips to experience weightlessness or stay aboard the ISS. However, spacewalking remains one of the riskiest activities in space exploration, making this successful private mission all the more remarkable.

With this achievement, Isaacman joins a select group of only 263 people from 12 countries who have conducted spacewalks. The first-ever spacewalk was performed by Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov in 1965, followed shortly by NASA astronaut Ed White.

As more private missions are planned, experts predict that the desire for spacewalk experiences will increase among affluent adventurers seeking the ultimate thrill.

The success of Polaris Dawn signals a bright future for private space exploration, with SpaceX continuing to lead the charge in the development of new technologies and capabilities for space travel.

Vietnam’s typhoon Yagi ceath toll reaches 226; flood pressure eases in Hanoi

0

HANOI/THAI NGUYEN. The death toll from Typhoon Yagi and the subsequent landslides and flash floods in Vietnam has risen to 226, according to the government’s disaster agency. The devastating storm, which made landfall on the country’s northeastern coast on Saturday, has had a profound impact, with over 100 people still reported missing and around 800 injured.

Flooding in the capital city of Hanoi has been severe, though the weather agency reported later in the day that the flood pressure had eased. Despite this, the northern regions of Vietnam, including Hanoi, continue to experience challenges from flash floods and landslides.

Hanoi’s residents faced significant challenges as the swollen Red River reached a 20-year high, prompting the evacuation of thousands from vulnerable areas. “There’s a lot of heartbreak in the city and there was a lot of concern going into the evening,” said Skye Maconachie, co-CEO of the Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation. “Many people who barely had anything have lost everything.”

The river’s level in Hanoi has now peaked and started to recede, according to the government’s weather forecast agency. However, northern areas north of the capital remain severely affected by ongoing landslides and floods.

In Thai Nguyen province, which houses Samsung Electronics’ largest smartphone manufacturing plant in Vietnam, flood waters have receded in some areas. Residents are now focused on recovery, including repairing submerged motorbikes and other personal property. “I only have this one motorbike to go to work with, but it was flooded so I have to bring it here to have it fixed,” said a local resident. “I can only go to work once it’s fixed.”

Motorbike repair shop owner Nguyen Van Truong reported being overwhelmed by the demand, stating, “We are a bit overwhelmed, very overwhelmed actually. I’m tired from the hard work but people need transport means to smoothly get everything back to normal.”

In Lao Cai province, rescue efforts are ongoing for 55 individuals missing due to a flash flood that struck Nu Village on Tuesday. The flood has claimed 46 lives and injured 17 others. More than 300 soldiers and local officials are involved in the search and rescue operations.

The typhoon has also wreaked havoc on agriculture, inundating over 200,000 hectares of rice and cash crop fields across northern Vietnam. In addition to agricultural losses, the storm has disrupted power supplies and damaged factory roofs in Haiphong and Quang Ninh provinces, leading to production halts.

International aid has started to arrive, with countries including Australia, Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. offering assistance to help Vietnam recover from this catastrophic event.

Israel identifies Hamas gunmen targeted in airstrike that killed UNRWA staffers

JERUSALEM. The Israeli military on Thursday named nine individuals it identified as Hamas militants killed in Gaza airstrikes. The United Nations Palestinian Refugee Agency (UNRWA) confirmed that the strikes also claimed the lives of six of its staff members.

According to the Israeli military, three of the Hamas militants were also working as UNRWA employees. Reuters was unable to verify their identities independently, and Hamas has not yet issued a response regarding the allegations.

The airstrikes, which occurred on Wednesday, targeted a school in central Gaza. UNRWA reported that the school compound was sheltering displaced civilians when two separate strikes hit, resulting in the highest single-day death toll among its staff since the conflict began. In total, the strikes killed at least 18 people, including women and children.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack, with his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, stating, “This incident must be independently and thoroughly investigated to ensure accountability. The continued lack of effective protection for civilians in Gaza is unconscionable.”

The Israeli military, however, maintained that Hamas militants were using the school compound for military purposes. Juliette Touma, UNRWA’s Director of Communications, expressed concern that the Israeli authorities had not previously flagged any of the UNRWA staff members as potential Hamas militants. “The names that appear on today’s statement from the Israeli Army have not been flagged to us before by the Israeli authorities on previous occasions,” Touma said.

The UN has called for all parties involved in the conflict to refrain from using civilian areas such as schools and shelters for military purposes. Meanwhile, the Israeli military continues to assert that it takes steps to minimize civilian casualties, despite accusing Hamas of using Palestinian civilians as human shields, a charge that Hamas denies.

Taylor Swift has officially endorsed Kamala Harris for the 2024 U.S. presidential election following debate

WASHINGTON D.C. Global music sensation Taylor Swift has thrown her support behind Kamala Harris for president, in a post-debate endorsement that has sent shockwaves across social media. Swift, known for her massive influence among younger voters, made her announcement late Tuesday through Instagram, expressing her admiration for Harris as a leader who embodies “calm and not chaos.”

“I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader, and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos,” Swift wrote, attaching a link to a voter registration website. The post, which featured Swift holding her cat Benjamin Button, quickly garnered more than 2.3 million likes within 30 minutes of going live. She ended the post humorously, signing off as “Childless Cat Lady,” a pointed jab referencing a controversial 2021 comment made by JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, about women without children having less of a stake in the nation’s future.

Swift’s endorsement comes at a critical moment for Harris, who is vying for broader voter support in the lead-up to November’s presidential election. Known for her wide-reaching appeal, especially among young women—a demographic seen as pivotal to the election—Swift’s voice could potentially sway the opinions of millions.

The endorsement, according to Harris’ campaign team, was not planned in advance. In fact, Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, appeared to learn about Swift’s post while being interviewed live on MSNBC. As Rachel Maddow read Swift’s statement on-air, Walz smiled and placed his hand on his chest, remarking, “That was eloquent. And it was clear. And that’s the kind of courage we need in America to stand up.”

Swift revealed that part of her decision to publicly back Harris stemmed from frustration over AI-generated images shared by Trump, falsely suggesting that she had endorsed him. In one widely circulated image, Swift is depicted dressed as Uncle Sam, with the slogan “Taylor wants YOU to VOTE for DONALD TRUMP.” The misleading posts led Swift to clarify her stance on the upcoming election.

“These posts brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter,” Swift explained in her post. “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice.”

Trump responded to Swift’s announcement on Fox & Friends, saying, “It was just a question of time. She’s a very liberal person, and she always seems to endorse a Democrat. She’ll probably pay a price in the marketplace.”

Swift, no stranger to politics, has been vocal about her political views in recent years. In 2020, she endorsed Joe Biden and celebrated Harris’ debate performance against then-Vice President Mike Pence. Her previous critiques of Trump were particularly harsh, accusing him of stoking “the fires of white supremacy and racism.”

Swift’s endorsement is particularly influential among Democrats. A Fox News poll in October 2023 found that 68% of Democrats held a favorable view of her, while Republicans were more divided—43% viewing her positively and 45% unfavorably. Swift’s political engagement first made headlines in 2018 when she endorsed Tennessee Democrat Phil Bredesen for Senate, an endorsement that revealed a partisan divide even then.

While Harris’ campaign has yet to confirm any future collaboration with Swift, the singer’s endorsement is already seen as a powerful boost to the Harris-Walz ticket.

Taylor Swift is currently leading the nominees at the MTV Video Music Awards, which will take place on Wednesday, a day later than originally planned to accommodate the presidential debate. It remains unclear if Swift will attend the event, but there is speculation that she may use her platform during any acceptance speeches to further elaborate on her political endorsement.

MTV has a long history of encouraging youth voter participation, and with Swift now firmly in Harris’ corner, her influence could extend far beyond the music world.

Pope Francis arrives in economic powerhouse Singapore after uplifting visit to East Timor

0

SINGAPORE. Pope Francis arrived in Singapore on Wednesday, concluding the final leg of his historic Asia tour. His arrival in one of the world’s wealthiest nations follows an emotional and record-breaking visit to East Timor, one of the poorest countries in the region, where his message of unity and hope resonated with millions.

The 87-year-old pontiff, who is on the longest trip of his papacy, arrived in Singapore aboard Aero Dili’s Airbus A320 after a brief farewell ceremony in East Timor. The Pope’s arrival in the bustling financial hub came after leading a momentous Mass attended by around 600,000 Timorese faithful in the seaside capital of Dili. This figure represents nearly half of East Timor’s population, a testament to the strong Catholic faith of its people.

During his stay in East Timor, Francis urged the youth, who comprise most of the country’s 1.3 million population, to work towards the nation’s continued development. “Go forward with the happiness of youth, but don’t forget one thing,” Francis emphasized. “You are the heirs of those who persevered in founding this nation. For this, don’t lose your memory, the memory of those who persevered with so much sacrifice to consolidate this nation.”

The Pope, who spoke off the cuff in his native Spanish, encouraged the youth to build upon the foundations laid by previous generations who fought for East Timor’s independence from Indonesia in 2002. His rallying call was filled with optimism, yet also carried a warning for the future.

In his final address at the Mass, Francis urged the people of East Timor to remain vigilant against external forces seeking to exploit their country’s resources. Using the metaphor of “crocodiles,” he warned the Timorese to be wary of those who “want to change your culture, your history.” This caution was likely directed at international commercial interests vying to develop East Timor’s rich natural gas reserves.

“Don’t go near those crocodiles because they bite, and bite a lot, a lot,” Francis warned, using the Spanish term that also implies corruption or bribery. His message was clear: protect the country’s heritage and resources from exploitation, especially as negotiations continue over the development of the Greater Sunrise gas field, a key economic asset shared with Australia.

East Timor, officially known as Timor-Leste, has faced significant challenges since gaining independence, with over 40% of its population living below the poverty line. The nation’s oil and gas sector remains its main source of revenue, yet disputes over how to best harness these resources have delayed potential benefits for its people.

Francis’ visit to East Timor also highlighted the country’s journey of reconciliation following its brutal occupation by Indonesia. During his stay, the Pope lauded the Timorese for rebuilding their nation from the ground up and fostering peace with Indonesia. One figure who exemplified this spirit of reconciliation is Fransisco Dionisio Fernandes, a former pro-independence activist and now a diplomat. Speaking about the importance of moving forward, Fernandes remarked, “What’s past is past, every nation certainly has its dark history, and we cannot erase history. East Timor has made a great effort to reconcile the wounds of the past and found a way to pursue a process of genuine reconciliation.”

As Francis departed for Singapore, the contrast between the two nations was striking. Singapore, a global financial hub, stands in sharp contrast to the poverty-stricken East Timor. Since its independence from Malaysia in 1965, Singapore has transformed into an economic powerhouse, known for its high standard of living, low crime rates, and highly competitive work environment. Yet, it also faces challenges, such as being one of the most expensive cities in the world and having a high-pressure workforce.

While Francis has no public engagements scheduled for his arrival in Singapore, he is expected to hold a private meeting with his fellow Jesuits later in the day.

Pope Francis’ trip has been a powerful demonstration of his commitment to advocating for the poor and marginalized while addressing global challenges like corruption and resource exploitation. His message in East Timor, coupled with his arrival in Singapore, underscores the vast economic disparities that continue to shape the Asian continent.

Police uncover new sexual abuse claims against Pastor Apollo Quiboloy

0

MANILA. Philippine police revealed on Wednesday new, “alarming details” in ongoing investigations against celebrity preacher Apollo Quiboloy, following a series of fresh allegations of sexual abuse. Quiboloy, a self-proclaimed “Appointed Son of God” and leader of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KJC) church, faces serious charges both in the Philippines and the United States, including sex trafficking, money laundering, and child abuse.

The recent allegations come after Quiboloy was arrested on Sunday, following an extensive raid on his 30-hectare compound in Davao City, which involved over 2,000 security personnel. Police Chief General Francisco Marbil, in a statement, said the victims’ testimonies reveal a disturbing pattern of manipulation and exploitation. “These courageous victims have spoken up, revealing their harrowing experiences. The abuse they endured shows an alarming pattern of manipulation and exploitation,” Marbil said.

Among the victims are girls as young as 12, who were reportedly part of a special group called “inner-circle pastorals.” These individuals were instrumental in shedding light on the full scope of the crimes allegedly committed by Quiboloy. However, the exact number of those coming forward remains undisclosed.

Quiboloy, who for years has maintained a powerful influence, boasting millions of followers and deep ties with political elites, particularly with former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, denies all wrongdoing. His lawyers, Ferdinand Topacio and Israelito Torreon, have not issued any immediate statements regarding the new allegations.

The pastor is also on the FBI’s most wanted list for running a sex-trafficking operation that allegedly coerced victims with threats of “eternal damnation” and physical abuse. The Philippine police are currently validating the new information provided by victims to further strengthen the cases against him.

Marbil has encouraged any other potential victims to come forward, assuring them of protection and pledging that the investigation will leave “no stone unturned” in the pursuit of justice.

While the Philippine Department of Justice acknowledged the existing extradition treaty with the United States, they noted that Quiboloy would need to face trial and serve any sentence in the Philippines before any extradition request could be processed.

This case marks a significant step in holding powerful figures accountable for alleged abuse, and authorities have vowed to continue uncovering the truth.

Kamala Harris puts Trump on the defensive in heated presidential debate

0

PHILADELPHIA. In a fiery presidential debate on Tuesday night, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris took the offensive against former President Donald Trump, launching pointed criticisms that placed her opponent on the back foot throughout the night. The exchange, marked by sharp attacks on Trump’s record, abortion policies, and legal troubles, saw Harris dominate the discussion, with Trump repeatedly forced to defend himself.

Harris, a former prosecutor known for her incisive debating skills, wasted no time challenging Trump’s stance on key issues. “At your rallies, people often leave early because they’re exhausted and bored,” she jabbed at the former president. Trump, visibly agitated, responded by boasting about the size of his rallies, calling them “the most incredible rallies in the history of politics.”

The debate took a bizarre turn when Trump repeated a debunked claim about immigrants allegedly consuming pets in Springfield, Ohio, a claim that had been circulating on social media and further amplified by his running mate, Senator JD Vance. “They’re eating the dogs and cats of the people who live there,” Trump asserted, to which Harris responded with disbelief, “Talk about extreme.”

The highly anticipated face-off, the only scheduled debate between the two candidates ahead of the election, saw both parties clash over immigration, healthcare, and foreign policy. However, detailed policy discussions were sparse, with the focus largely on personal jabs and attempts to dominate the narrative.

With only weeks left before the election, the debate was seen as a critical moment for both campaigns. Political analysts noted that Harris succeeded in framing the night around Trump’s controversial remarks, leaving many Republicans concerned about his performance. According to Marc Short, a former chief of staff for Trump’s Vice President Mike Pence, “Trump missed an opportunity to focus on the economy and immigration, instead falling into Harris’ trap with tangential claims about election fraud and immigrants.”

Meanwhile, Harris gained an unexpected endorsement when pop icon Taylor Swift publicly voiced her support, adding momentum to her campaign just moments after the debate ended. In an Instagram post to her 283 million followers, Swift declared her backing for Harris and her running mate Tim Walz, referring to herself humorously as the “childless cat lady” — a nod to earlier comments from Vance.

Prediction markets reacted swiftly to the debate, with Harris’ odds of victory slightly improving. In response to her campaign’s challenge for a second debate, Trump seemed reluctant, telling Fox News: “Why should I do another debate if I’ve already won?”

As the election nears, both candidates continue to court undecided voters in an increasingly polarized political landscape, with Harris seizing on this opportunity to further press her advantage.

Talaba 2 at Brgy. Zapote 3.
