Auburn, Washington. The tranquil surroundings of a suburban Seattle horse racing track transformed into a prehistoric spectacle as over 200 participants donned inflatable Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur costumes for a unique event. The 2023 T-Rex World Championships held at Emerald Downs, which originally began in 2017 as a pest control company’s team-building activity, culminated in a closely contested finish, resembling a scene from the dinosaur era.

In a surprising twist, the 100-yard (91.2-meter) dash concluded with a photo finish, with three contenders crossing the finish line simultaneously on Sunday. The top spot was secured by Ocean Kim, hailing from Kailua, Hawaii, who managed to nudge ahead of the pack and hit the finish wire first. Colton Winegar, adopting the persona of Deno the Dino, claimed second place, representing Boise, Idaho. Rex Ray Machine, portrayed by Seth Hirschi from Renton, took the third position.

The original Tyrannosaurus rex inhabited the Earth approximately 65 to 67 million years ago. A recent scientific study, published in the journal Science two years ago, estimated that about 2.5 billion of these remarkable creatures roamed the planet during their existence. Hollywood’s fascination with the carnivorous T. rex, epitomized by the “Jurassic Park” franchise, has only added to the public’s enduring intrigue in this ancient predator.

The T-Rex World Championships, born out of a quirky team-building exercise, have truly captured the imagination of participants and spectators alike, offering a playful nod to the awe-inspiring history of the fearsome T. rex.
