MANILA, Philippines — An 18-year-old incoming De La Salle University student died Thursday afternoon, August 13, after falling from the 10th-floor ledge of a building near the Enrique Razon Sports Complex in Malate, Manila, according to police and reports from multiple news organizations.
Police said the incident happened at around 12:57 p.m. near the corner of Noli Agno Street and F. Reyes Street in Barangay 708. The student was later identified as an incoming DLSU student who had been residing at the university’s Female Athletes Dormitory along F. Reyes Street in Barangay 714, according to police information reported by The Filipino Times.
Authorities said a concerned citizen alerted them after reportedly seeing a person on the 10th-floor ledge. Security personnel went to the area and found the student lying prone on the ledge.
Police said the student subsequently rolled off the ledge and fell to the ground. A doctor from De La Salle University responded to the scene and declared her dead.
The incident was initially reported to the Malate Police Station at about 1:35 p.m. The case was later referred to the Manila Police District homicide section for further investigation. Police have not yet determined the circumstances surrounding the fall.
De La Salle University confirmed that an incident involving an incoming student occurred on its Manila campus Thursday.
In a statement, the university said it had reached out to the student’s parents and was coordinating with authorities. DLSU also said students who were in the vicinity during the incident had been debriefed and were undergoing counseling.
The university appealed for privacy and compassion as the family and members of the school community deal with the death.
“Out of respect for the student and the family’s privacy during this sensitive time, we request for the public’s cooperation in maintaining a supportive and compassionate environment,” DLSU said, according to reports.
The incident follows a separate case in February in which a DLSU student was injured after falling from a campus building. DLSU confirmed at the time that the student received immediate medical attention from the university clinic and was subsequently brought to a nearby hospital for further evaluation.
The latest incident has prompted renewed attention to student welfare and the importance of providing immediate support to members of the university community affected by traumatic events.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Thursday’s death. DLSU has not released the identity of the student, in keeping with the family’s privacy.
