Anthropic quietly sets up biology lab as AI drug research expands

SAN FRANCISCO | Anthropic has established a physical biology laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area as the artificial intelligence company expands its push into drug research, moving beyond computer simulations and into experiments involving biological materials, Reuters reported on September 18.

The company’s head of life sciences, Eric Kauderer-Abrams, confirmed the existence of the “wet lab” in a Reuters interview, saying real laboratory work remains the final test for biological research. He said Anthropic is conducting some experiments in its own facilities while also working with outside partners.

An Anthropic spokesperson later clarified that the laboratory is not specifically dedicated to drug discovery, although the company has been building a broader life sciences program aimed at accelerating research into diseases that have traditionally been difficult or commercially unattractive to treat. Reuters reported that Anthropic is not conducting clinical trials and is seeking to avoid directly competing with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

The company is also exploring the use of its Claude AI models to operate laboratory robots and carry out scientific experiments with limited human intervention. Anthropic said human oversight remains essential for safety, while Kauderer-Abrams described laboratory automation as being in its early stages.

The expansion follows several major moves by Anthropic into life sciences. In June, the company publicly outlined plans to conduct preclinical work in areas where traditional drugmakers have had limited financial incentives to invest. It has since launched Claude Science, a research platform designed to support scientific work, and acquired biotechnology startup Coefficient Bio to strengthen its drug-development capabilities, according to Reuters. Anthropic has also added Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan to its board and provides AI services to pharmaceutical companies including Genentech, Bristol Myers Squibb and Novo Nordisk.

On September 16, Novo Nordisk announced a collaboration with Anthropic to use Claude and Claude Science to address drug-discovery challenges and accelerate the development of new medicines. The Danish pharmaceutical company said the partnership would combine Anthropic’s AI models with scientific and computational expertise from its research teams.

Anthropic has also moved to broaden access to its AI models for professional life sciences research. On September 17, it launched a beta Life Sciences Verification Program that gives verified organizations access to its Mythos, Opus and Sonnet models for work including drug discovery, research biology, clinical development and manufacturing, subject to additional safeguards and verification of research credentials, security standards and ethical oversight.

Anthropic, founded in early 2021 by Dario Amodei, Daniela Amodei and other former OpenAI researchers, initially focused heavily on developing AI systems designed to be reliable, steerable and interpretable. Its expansion into biology represents a significant broadening of that mission, from developing AI systems to applying them directly to scientific research.

The move comes as the pharmaceutical industry increasingly experiments with AI for drug discovery, although the technology has yet to eliminate the fundamental difficulties of translating computational predictions into safe and effective medicines. Reuters noted that most prospective drugs fail during clinical development because of safety or efficacy problems. Recent research has demonstrated that AI systems can generate promising biological hypotheses, but such findings still require laboratory validation and, ultimately, human clinical testing.

For Anthropic, the immediate goal is therefore not to replace pharmaceutical companies or take candidate medicines directly into human trials, but to use AI, laboratory experimentation and automation to accelerate earlier stages of biological research. The company has said it sees particular potential in diseases and biological targets that have historically been difficult to address.

The expansion also presents a difficult balance for an AI company whose work is closely associated with concerns over the technology’s potential risks. Anthropic has acknowledged the possibility of biological misuse and has introduced additional safeguards for life sciences applications. Its new laboratory effort underscores the company’s attempt to pursue the potential benefits of AI in medicine while maintaining controls over how increasingly capable models are used.
