UNITED NATIONS | World leaders gathered at the United Nations on Tuesday for an annual high-level meeting dominated by wars, economic uncertainty, climate change, artificial intelligence and growing questions about the future of international cooperation.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres opened the main portion of the 81st General Assembly session by calling for “a world built on interdependence,” warning that widening divisions, armed conflicts and competition among major powers are putting pressure on the international system. AP reported that Guterres, who will leave office at the end of the year, said military power alone cannot secure peace.
The gathering comes as conflicts in Iran, Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Congo and Myanmar remain major concerns. AP reported that diplomats and officials arriving in New York described a world marked by deep uncertainty, shifting alliances and weakened international consensus. Officials also pointed to disruptions to global trade and shipping, climate-related disasters and continuing concerns over artificial intelligence.
The war involving Iran has added a major security and economic issue to this year’s discussions, particularly because of tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route for global energy supplies. AP reported that diplomats are expected to use meetings on the sidelines of the General Assembly to pursue contacts on maritime security and other issues where formal negotiations have stalled.
The diplomatic calendar is also drawing attention to the participation of major leaders. US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron are scheduled to address the assembly Tuesday, followed Wednesday by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to speak Thursday. AP reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are not attending, while India’s Narendra Modi has also backed out.
The United Nations itself faces institutional and financial challenges. AP reported that the organization has struggled to influence the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, while unpaid US contributions have added pressure to its finances. Reform of the Security Council is also on the agenda, including questions about the structure of a body in which the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France hold permanent seats and veto power.
Artificial intelligence has emerged as another major issue. The UN Security Council is scheduled to hold a high-level meeting on AI during the week, reflecting growing concern over the rapid development of the technology and the lack of comprehensive global safeguards.
The General Assembly has served as the UN’s principal deliberative and representative forum since its first meeting in London on Jan. 10, 1946, when representatives of 51 nations convened after World War II. The United Nations itself formally came into existence on Oct. 24, 1945, following the ratification of its founding Charter. Today, all 193 UN member states are represented in the General Assembly, with each holding one vote.
The 2026 high-level week runs through Sept. 28, with the General Debate scheduled from Sept. 22 to 26 and Sept. 28. Other high-level meetings will address climate action, sea-level rise, pandemic preparedness and the right to development.
As leaders deliver speeches and hold meetings behind the scenes, the central question confronting the gathering is whether countries can find enough common ground to address conflicts and global challenges at a time when international cooperation is under growing strain.
