KYIV, Ukraine | Russian forces launched another wave of drone attacks across Ukraine on Monday, killing at least seven people and wounding more than 50, as strikes hit apartment buildings, offices, data centers and the National Academy of Sciences in central Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said.
A woman was killed when a Russian drone struck the National Academy of Sciences building in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district, according to the Kyiv city military administration. The strike triggered a major fire in the historic building, with people seen escaping through windows as emergency crews responded. Three people were reported wounded at the site.
Three people were also killed when a drone struck an office center in central Dnipro during working hours, local authorities said. In Kharkiv, a Russian strike damaged a nine-story apartment building and wounded 43 people, including 11 children, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov. Russian attacks also caused casualties in the Chernihiv region and damaged infrastructure in Odesa and Kyiv.
The latest attacks followed several days of intensified Russian strikes on Ukrainian cities. Reuters reported Sunday that Russian forces had increasingly conducted attacks during daylight hours, rather than concentrating operations at night as they have done frequently during the war. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly said residential areas and civilian infrastructure have been hit, while both Russia and Ukraine deny deliberately targeting civilians.
The National Academy of Sciences building in Kyiv is among the country’s important scientific institutions. The latest strike also comes after repeated Russian attacks have damaged Ukrainian cultural and heritage sites. Ukraine’s Culture Ministry reported in June that Russian strikes had damaged the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, the Dovzhenko National Film Studio, museums and other cultural institutions in Kyiv, Kharkiv and Dnipro.
The attacks came after a week of diplomatic efforts at the United Nations aimed at advancing negotiations to end Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday that Ukraine would have to “pay a price” for actions taken in recent months, according to the Associated Press.
Russia’s full-scale invasion has now lasted more than four and a half years, making the continuing attacks one of the defining security crises in Europe since World War II. Repeated long-range drone and missile strikes have damaged homes, energy facilities, industrial sites and cultural institutions across Ukraine, while both sides continue to seek military and diplomatic leverage as efforts toward a settlement remain unresolved.
