DUBAI | An Indian pilot is being praised for helping avert a potential disaster after a co-pilot allegedly attacked him and attempted to crash a flydubai passenger jet bound for Israel, triggering a rapid descent before passengers and crew intervened and the aircraft was diverted safely to Saudi Arabia.
Flight FZ1073, carrying 174 people from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv on September 30, experienced a violent cockpit confrontation while flying at more than 30,000 feet, according to Reuters and the Associated Press. The aircraft, a Boeing 737 MAX 8, descended nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds before control was regained.
Reuters reported that Indian captain Smit Machchhar was allegedly stabbed by the co-pilot during the confrontation. Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to help unlock the cockpit door, allowing passengers and other crew members to enter and restrain the attacker. Two other flydubai pilots who were aboard the aircraft then helped regain control and divert the plane to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Israeli passenger Yaniv Hayun also played a key role in stopping the attack. Hayun said he grabbed the co-pilot, placed him in a chokehold and pulled him away from the cockpit controls as other passengers and crew members moved in to restrain him. Hayun, who said he has an aviation background, also helped pull back on the aircraft’s controls as the plane was rapidly descending before another pilot took over.
Passengers described a terrifying sequence in which the aircraft suddenly plunged and appeared to experience severe turbulence. Reuters reported that passengers initially did not know that a struggle was taking place in the cockpit. Some eventually realized something was seriously wrong and moved toward the cockpit, helping to subdue the co-pilot.
Machchhar was taken to a hospital in Saudi Arabia and underwent surgery. Reuters reported that he was recovering and in stable condition. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly praised the pilot for his role in preventing what could have become a major aviation disaster.
The precise motive for the cockpit attack remains under investigation. The AP reported that authorities in several countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Israel and Oman, are involved in examining the incident. Israeli officials have also sought information about the co-pilot, while investigators are examining whether the incident involved terrorism or another motive. Authorities have not established a definitive explanation.
Flydubai confirmed that the aircraft landed safely at Tabuk Airport and that all passengers were safe and accounted for. The airline said it was cooperating with the relevant authorities and later suspended flights to and from Israel while the investigation continues.
After landing in Tabuk, the passengers continued their journey to Israel aboard a replacement flydubai aircraft. Reuters reported that Saudi Arabia rejected an Israeli request to allow Israeli military aircraft to enter the kingdom to collect the stranded passengers. Saudi Arabia does not have diplomatic relations with Israel.
The incident also occurred against the backdrop of an unusual aviation relationship between Israel and the Gulf states. The United Arab Emirates established diplomatic relations with Israel under the Abraham Accords in 2020, paving the way for direct commercial air links. Flydubai operated its first scheduled Dubai-Tel Aviv flight on November 26, 2020.
The flight’s survival also highlights the layers of redundancy built into modern commercial aviation, where pilots, cabin crew, passengers and air traffic controllers can become critical to maintaining control during an emergency. In this case, investigators must now determine exactly what happened inside the cockpit, why the confrontation occurred and what led to the aircraft’s sudden descent.
As the investigation continues, aviation authorities and flydubai have urged that conclusions about the motive and circumstances be based on established evidence rather than speculation.
