NEW DELHI, India | Indian authorities detained hundreds of protesters and political figures as thousands of police and paramilitary personnel tightened security across New Delhi on Saturday to prevent a youth-led demonstration demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over a controversial revision of voter lists.
According to Al Jazeera and Channel NewsAsia, authorities imposed extensive security restrictions across New Delhi ahead of the planned rally, including the closure of metro stations and markets and the suspension of mobile internet services in parts of the capital. The Indian Express reported that police had requested restrictions at 57 metro stations to prevent large crowds from gathering near sensitive locations.
The protest was scheduled to take place at Jantar Mantar, a designated demonstration site in the capital, but security forces sealed off the area before the rally could begin. Smaller demonstrations nevertheless broke out at other locations, including a crafts market and the memorial to Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi.
Police also detained CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and senior movement figures Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka after their flight from Mumbai landed in Delhi, according to the group. Reuters also reported that police detained protesters in the city’s central business district as they attempted to gather.
The crackdown followed mounting opposition to a nationwide voter-list revision that has removed more than 130 million names, according to reports by Reuters and other news organizations. Critics allege that the exercise could disenfranchise eligible voters, particularly from marginalized communities, and benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Election Commission has defended the revision as an effort to remove duplicate and ineligible entries and maintain accurate electoral rolls. The commission and the BJP have denied allegations of political bias.
The controversy intensified after The Indian Express reported that senior officials within the Election Commission had raised concerns about aspects of the revision process. The reports added to opposition demands for greater transparency and accountability in the management of voter registration.
The dispute has become a significant political challenge for Modi’s government as India approaches a series of state elections in 2027. The country’s electoral system is overseen by the Election Commission, an independent constitutional body responsible for administering national and state elections.
The latest detentions have renewed concerns about freedom of assembly and the treatment of political dissent in the world’s largest democracy. While authorities moved to prevent the planned mass gathering, protesters continued to call for Kumar’s resignation and for safeguards to ensure that eligible citizens retain their voting rights.
