KYIV, Ukraine | October 14, 2026 | Ukraine has accused SpaceX of disrupting military drone operations after restrictions on its Starlink satellite communications service reportedly interrupted several missions, as Russian missile attacks continued to damage Ukrainian energy infrastructure and strain Kyiv’s relations with Washington.

Serhiy Beskrestnov, an adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said Ukrainian forces received no advance warning of the restrictions, which reportedly affected military-grade terminals operating at high speeds. Ukraine’s 7th Rapid Reaction Corps reported that connectivity interruptions lasting 10 to 20 seconds made drones more difficult to control and forced the cancellation of some missions, according to reports published Wednesday.

SpaceX, the company founded by Elon Musk, operates Starlink, a satellite internet network that has become a critical communications tool for Ukrainian forces since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Its resistance to electronic jamming has supported battlefield communications, logistics and drone operations. The reported restrictions have raised concerns about Ukraine’s dependence on privately controlled technology for military capabilities.

The dispute comes as Russian forces continue striking Ukrainian energy infrastructure despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s push for an energy ceasefire. Zelenskyy said a Russian ballistic missile strike on Kyiv damaged a residential building and hit the grounds of one of the capital’s main power plants. In a statement published on October 14, the Ukrainian president’s office said one person had been reported killed and six injured at the time of the initial assessment.

Ukrainian authorities also reported extensive damage to energy facilities, with hundreds of thousands of people left without electricity. Zelenskyy has accused Moscow of disregarding the proposed truce, while Russia has continued its military campaign against Ukrainian territory.

The tensions have added to concerns over the reliability of U.S. support. Zelenskyy told Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that Ukraine had again received no advance warning from partners before a Russian ballistic missile strike on Kyiv. The Ukrainian government said the leaders discussed diplomatic developments and the need for genuine steps toward ending the war.

Ukraine has relied heavily on Western military, intelligence and technological assistance throughout the conflict. The latest Starlink dispute highlights the strategic risks of depending on commercial satellite services during wartime, particularly when decisions by a private company can affect military operations. Neither the reported restrictions nor their possible political motivation had been independently established in full as of Wednesday.

The developments come as Ukraine prepares for another winter under continued attacks on its power and heating infrastructure. Kyiv has urged its international partners to strengthen air defences, maintain support and press Russia to respect an energy ceasefire.
