MELBOURNE, Australia | October 20, 2026 | An Australian man has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury after independent federal lawmaker Helen Haines was struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria, in an incident police have described as a targeted attack.
Victoria Police identified the accused as Brendan Nugent, 43, who faces three charges: intentionally causing serious injury, dangerous driving causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. He remains in custody and is expected to appear before the Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, October 21, according to reports published on Tuesday.
Haines, 65, was in critical but stable condition following emergency treatment, according to statements from Australian officials and media reports. She was initially taken to a hospital in Wangaratta before being airlifted to Melbourne for further care. Reports that she lost a leg emerged after the incident, although hospital officials had not publicly confirmed the details in the latest reports reviewed.
Investigators allege that the driver struck Haines with a Toyota Land Cruiser outside her office on Monday, October 19. Witness accounts reported that the vehicle turned around before hitting her again. A bystander intervened and helped restrain the suspect, while police confirmed that a knife was recovered from the vehicle.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the incident and said authorities were investigating whether it was politically motivated. A joint counterterrorism team involving police and intelligence agencies was brought into the investigation, but officials have said the motive remains unclear and that there was no immediate indication of a broader threat.
Haines represents the regional Victorian electorate of Indi and was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2019, winning re-election in 2022 and 2025, according to the Australian Parliament. Before entering politics, she worked in nursing, rural health and medical research, with a long-standing focus on healthcare access and services for regional communities.
The attack has renewed concerns about the safety of Australian politicians. The Australian Federal Police has warned in recent years of rising threats against parliamentarians, while government figures reported more than 1,000 threats against politicians during the 2025-2026 financial year.
Australian lawmakers have traditionally maintained relatively direct contact with constituents, particularly in regional electorates. The investigation is continuing, and the charges against Nugent remain allegations that must be tested in court.
