MANILA. The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced on Thursday its plan to carry out comprehensive background checks on candidates running in the May 12, 2025 elections. The initiative aims to ensure the integrity of the electoral process by identifying potential security risks, including threats of foreign interference and malign influence.

“This initiative is conducted in coordination with the Comelec and PNP and focuses on identifying potential security threats arising from foreign interference and malign influence,” the AFP said in an official statement.

The AFP clarified that all intelligence gathering will be conducted impartially and in strict adherence to the democratic process. “The AFP’s role is strictly nonpartisan. Our efforts are anchored on impartiality and respect for the democratic process,” it emphasized.

Any findings from the background checks will be confidentially submitted to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for appropriate action.

Meanwhile, the Comelec reiterated that candidates with cases deemed final and executory by the en banc are excluded from the ballot. However, those with pending cases or decisions are still eligible to run.

The AFP assured the public that its efforts would focus solely on safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process, fostering a secure and fair environment for the upcoming elections.
