Eric Carmen, renowned for his timeless ballad “All By Myself,” has passed away at the age of 74, as confirmed by his wife.
The American artist initially gained prominence as a member of the power pop band the Raspberries before venturing into a successful solo career. His solo hit “Hungry Eyes” notably featured in the beloved 1987 film “Dirty Dancing.”
In a heartfelt statement posted on his official website, Carmen’s wife, Amy, announced his peaceful passing, stating, “Our sweet, loving and talented Eric passed away in his sleep, over the weekend.” She expressed gratitude that his music had resonated with countless fans over the years, describing it as his enduring legacy. Amy concluded with a poignant quote from Carmen’s 1977 solo album “Boats Against The Current”: “Love is all that matters… faithful and forever.”
Born in Ohio, Carmen co-founded the Raspberries in the early 1970s alongside Jim Bonfanti and Wally Bryson, later welcoming Dave Smalley into the fold after the departure of John Aleksic. The band achieved chart success with their debut album in 1972, featuring hits like “Go All The Way,” although the track faced controversy in the UK for its suggestive lyrics. Notably, “Go All The Way” found a new audience when included on the soundtrack of the 2014 film “Guardians Of The Galaxy.”
Following the Raspberries’ dissolution in 1975, Carmen embarked on a solo journey. His rendition of “All By Myself” became a classic, later immortalized by Canadian songstress Celine Dion. Additionally, the song left an indelible mark in popular culture, featuring in the opening scene of the film “Bridget Jones’s Diary.”
As a prolific songwriter, Carmen contributed hits such as “Almost Paradise” from the “Footloose” soundtrack, alongside “Never Gonna Fall In Love Again” and “Make Me Lose Control.”
