MOSCOW. An accident in southern Russia left at least 140 people injured on Monday when a train carrying 800 passengers collided with a truck at a level crossing, resulting in eight derailed carriages, according to Russian Railways.

The collision occurred near Kotelnikovo station in the southern Volgograd region, approximately 1,200 km (750 miles) south of Moscow. The train, en route from Kazan in Tatarstan to Adler on the Black Sea, struck a Kamaz truck traveling on the crossing despite active alarms. The driver of the train attempted to brake upon sighting the truck, which was violating traffic rules.

Russian Railways reported, “About 140 people received cuts and bruises,” adding that 15 individuals, including three children, were hospitalized for further treatment. The truck driver, who was reportedly thrown about 15 meters (50 feet) from the impact, is in critical condition, as per the Mash Telegram channel. The channel also shared footage showing the severely damaged truck cabin and the injured driver.

While Mash initially reported two fatalities, Russian officials have not confirmed any deaths. Video footage from state news agency TASS revealed twisted and derailed carriages, highlighting the severity of the accident.

Russia’s emergency ministry confirmed that fire and rescue teams were on site, working to free trapped passengers. In total, nine carriages were reported to have derailed as a result of the crash.
