Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie, have announced their separation after 18 years of marriage. The couple made the decision after engaging in “many meaningful and difficult conversations,” as stated in their posts on Instagram. A statement from the prime minister’s office confirmed that they have signed a legal separation agreement.

Justin Trudeau, 51, a prominent figure in Canadian politics, assumed office as Prime Minister in 2015. His wife, Sophie Trudeau, is a former model and TV host. They tied the knot in 2005 and brought star power to the prime minister’s office, even appearing in Vogue magazine together.

In their joint statement on Instagram, the couple emphasized that they remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other. They expressed their commitment to continue building their lives together. They will also focus on raising their children in a safe, loving, and collaborative environment.

An official familiar with the matter disclosed that Justin Trudeau will continue residing at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, where he has lived since 2015. The children will primarily live there to maintain stability. Sophie Trudeau has moved to a separate home in Ottawa but will spend time at Rideau Cottage, especially when the Prime Minister is traveling.

While Sophie has played a less visible role in recent years and rarely accompanied the Prime Minister on official trips, they were seen together publicly at Canada Day events in Ottawa last month.

Justin Trudeau’s office has requested respect for their privacy during this time. The Prime Minister and Sophie Gregoire first met as children when she was a classmate of Justin’s youngest brother, Michel. They reconnected as adults while co-hosting a charity gala in 2003.

Notably, Trudeau is the second Canadian Prime Minister to announce a separation while in office. His father, Pierre Trudeau, and mother, Margaret Trudeau, separated in 1977 and divorced in 1984 during Pierre’s final year as Prime Minister.

As a child, Justin experienced the impact of public life on his parents’ marriage, as he described in his book “Common Ground” published in 2014.

Despite facing scandals, voter fatigue, and economic inflation during his eight years in power, Trudeau’s star power as a Liberal leader has been significant. Some political analysts, like Nelson Wiseman from the University of Toronto, had previously considered the possibility of Trudeau stepping down from office in the coming years. However, recent developments suggest that Trudeau may be more inclined to remain active in the political arena.
