MOSCOW — A Russian general was killed on Monday in a car bombing in Moscow, marking the third assassination of a senior military officer in Russia within a year, authorities said. Ukrainian involvement is being investigated as a possible motive.
Lt. Gen. Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, succumbed to his injuries, according to Svetlana Petrenko, spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee, the nation’s top criminal investigation agency.
“Investigators are pursuing numerous lines of inquiry regarding the murder. One of these is that the crime was orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services,” Petrenko said.
Since Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine nearly four years ago, Moscow has blamed Ukraine for multiple assassinations of military and public officials, some of which Ukraine has claimed responsibility for. Ukraine has not yet commented on Sarvarov’s death.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that President Vladimir Putin was immediately informed of the killing. The Russian Defense Ministry noted that Sarvarov had previously fought in Chechnya and participated in Moscow’s military campaign in Syria.
Just over a year ago, Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s nuclear, biological, and chemical protection forces, was killed by a bomb hidden on an electric scooter outside his apartment. His assistant also died in the attack, which Ukraine’s security service later claimed responsibility for. An Uzbek man was arrested and charged with carrying out the attack on behalf of Ukraine.
In April, another senior officer, Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik, a deputy head of the main operational department in the General Staff, was killed by an explosive device planted in his parked car near his residence outside Moscow. Authorities quickly arrested a suspect. Days later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted in public comments that top Russian military figures had been targeted, emphasizing that “justice inevitably comes,” without naming Moskalik.
The Moscow authorities continue to investigate Sarvarov’s killing as tensions between Russia and Ukraine persist, highlighting ongoing security concerns for Russian military leadership.
