BEIJING. China will display its missiles, fighter jets, and other military hardware in a major parade on Wednesday in the nation’s capital, with some equipment on public view for the first time.
Troops will march in formation before President Xi Jinping, who leads the Communist Party and serves as chairman of the Central Military Commission. Xi will deliver a speech at the event, which marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. About two dozen foreign leaders seeking to maintain or improve relations with Beijing are expected to attend.
Chinese military officials said the parade will feature land, sea, and air-based strategic weapons, advanced precision warfare equipment, and drones. Warplanes and helicopters will fly in formation over the city.
This is China’s first major military parade since 2019, which celebrated the 70th anniversary of the founding of the communist state. The event is intended to instill national pride and assure citizens of the country’s ability to defend itself, but China’s growing military strength has raised concerns among its Asian neighbors and the United States.
Leaders from the U.S., Western Europe, Japan, India, and South Korea are staying away, while North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the president of Iran are attending. Overall, about two dozen foreign leaders from Southeast Asia, Africa, and South Asia are expected.
The parade is highly choreographed and tightly controlled. Barriers will keep the public one block away from the route, and commercial buildings along the way will be closed. Most people will view the event via television or livestream.
