Malapit nang magkaroon ng mas maraming oportunidad sa trabaho ang mga manggagawang Pilipino dahil pormal na nilagdaan ng Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) ang isang labor cooperation agreement sa gobyerno ng Yukon, Canada.
Nilagdaan ni Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III at Minister Ranj Pillai ang memorandum of understanding (MOU) sa pagtatrabaho at proteksyon ng mga manggagawang Pilipino sa isang virtual na seremonya noong Marso 18.
“The Memorandum of Understanding that we are signing not only strengthens our bilateral labor relations but will also enhance our cooperation in the protection, recruitment and deployment of Filipino workers in Yukon,” ayon kay Bello kanina.
Magsisimula ang screening ng mga kwalipikadong aplikanteng Filipino sa sandaling maaprubahan ng Joint Working Committee ang implementing guidelines na kakatawanin nina Consul General Maria Andrelita Austria, Deputy Consul General Arlene Magno, at Vancouver Labor Attaché Jainal Rasul Jr.
Si Bello, kasama si DOLE Assistant Secretary Alice Visperas at Rasul, ay lumagda sa MOU sa Philippine Consulate sa New York; habang si Minister Pillai, na sinamahan ng ilang Filipino community leaders sa Whitehorse, Yukon, ay lumagda sa MOU sa Philippine Consulate sa Vancouver.
May humigit-kumulang 5,000 Pilipino sa Yukon at karamihan sa kanila ay naging permanenteng residente na o Canadian citizen.
