SEOUL. South Korea’s former first lady Kim Keon Hee, the wife of ousted ex-president Yoon Suk Yeol, has been indicted on bribery and other charges, a special prosecution team announced Friday.
Both Kim and Yoon are currently in jail. Yoon is already on trial for insurrection after his removal from office in April, following his failed attempt to impose martial law in December.
The indictment of Kim comes as part of separate investigations by special prosecutors appointed after Yoon’s ouster and the inauguration of liberal President Lee Jae Myung in June.
Kim, accused of stock fraud and bribery involving business owners, religious figures, and a political broker, faces prison if convicted. In a statement released through her lawyers, she apologized for “causing concerns” and vowed to face trial without excuses.
“Just as moonlight shines brightly in the darkest night, I too will endure this time, looking to my truth and heart,” Kim said, without addressing the charges directly.
Kim has long been entangled in scandals that overshadowed her husband’s turbulent presidency. Her lawyers denied the allegations, dismissing reports about alleged gifts as “groundless speculation.”
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who became acting president after Yoon’s impeachment, was also indicted Friday for abetting insurrection and committing perjury. Prosecutors said Han failed to stop Yoon’s unconstitutional martial law order.
Han, a veteran technocrat who served under five presidents, denied aiding Yoon but admitted some responsibility for not preventing the crisis. His impeachment was later overturned by the Constitutional Court, but he resigned after political rifts ended his presidential ambitions.
