Netherlands to return 3,500-year-old sculpture to Egypt

The Netherlands has announced it will repatriate a 3,500-year-old Egyptian sculpture to Egypt, Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof revealed during a visit to Cairo, where he met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el‑Sisi.

The artifact, which appears to depict a senior official from the reign of Thutmose III (1479 – 1425 BC), was discovered at an art fair in Maastricht in 2022 after an anonymous tip raised concerns about its origin.

Dutch authorities say that an investigation by the police and the Cultural Heritage Inspectorate (Inspectie Overheidsinformatie en Erfgoed) found that the sculpture had likely been looted during the Arab Spring unrest of 2011 and exported illegally before being offered on the international art market.

The dealer in possession of the piece surrendered it voluntarily at the conclusion of the inquiry. The Dutch government expects to hand over the artifact to Egypt’s ambassador in the Netherlands later this year, though no firm date has yet been set.

The sculpture’s return comes amid growing international efforts to address the illegal trade of antiquities and to restore culturally significant objects to their countries of origin. Experts say this case may set a precedent for future restitution of ancient artifacts.

The Maastricht art fair where the sculpture appeared is the annual European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF), among the world’s top venues for classical and antiquities markets, highlighting how high-profile such looted works can surface in legitimate channels.

Egyptian officials welcomed the decision, describing the sculpture as a valuable part of their cultural heritage and saying its return will help fill gaps in their ancient past. According to Egypt’s antiquities ministry, thousands of artifacts have been lost or trafficked since the early 20th century.

The Dutch-Egyptian agreement also underscores diplomatic ties between the two countries, which were reinforced during Schoof’s visit, which coincided with the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, a major cultural landmark near Cairo. Hamas turns over three more hostage bodies

JERUSALEM — Hamas handed over the bodies of three hostages on Sunday, as the Palestinian militant group and Israel traded accusations over violations of the fragile ceasefire that has largely paused nearly two years of war.

Israeli forces in Gaza received three coffins containing the bodies of the hostages, transferred through the International Committee of the Red Cross, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said. The remains were brought to Israel for identification.

The bodies are believed to be among 11 sets of remains Israel has demanded under the terms of the truce. Israel has accused Hamas of moving too slowly, while Hamas said it is working “as quickly as possible under difficult conditions.”

The dispute is among several issues delaying full implementation of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire, in effect since October 10.

Earlier Sunday, an Israeli airstrike killed a man in northern Gaza. The Israeli military said its aircraft targeted a militant who posed a threat to its troops. Al-Ahli Hospital reported that one man was killed near a vegetable market in Gaza City’s Shejaia district.

“There are still Hamas pockets in areas under our control in Gaza, and we are systematically eliminating them,” Netanyahu said during a cabinet meeting in Jerusalem.

Hamas, for its part, released what it described as a list of Israeli ceasefire violations. Ismail Al-Thawabta, director of the Hamas-run Gaza government media office, denied claims that Hamas fighters had attacked Israeli soldiers.

The ceasefire has brought relative calm to the enclave, allowing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to return to the ruins of their homes. Israel has withdrawn troops from some urban positions, and more humanitarian aid has been allowed to enter.

Under the agreement, Hamas released all 20 living hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and wartime detainees held by Israel. It is also committed to handing over the remains of 28 deceased hostages in exchange for the bodies of 360 Palestinian militants killed during the war. Before Sunday’s turnover, Hamas had returned 17.

Still, violence has not completely stopped. Palestinian health authorities report that Israeli strikes have killed 236 people in Gaza since the truce began, nearly half of them in a single day last week when Israel retaliated for an attack on its troops. Israel says three of its soldiers have been killed and that it has targeted dozens of fighters.

The ceasefire, brokered by the United States, remains fragile as both sides appeal to Washington to curb violations.

According to the Israeli military, U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Dan Caine met with Israel’s military chief, Eyal Zamir, on Saturday to discuss developments in Gaza. Netanyahu said all Israeli actions in the territory are reported to Washington. Hamas, however, accused the U.S. of not doing enough to ensure Israel’s compliance with the ceasefire agreement.

Roughly 200 U.S. troops are currently stationed in southern Israel to monitor the truce and assist in planning an international stabilization force for Gaza, as envisioned in later phases of U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace initiative.

So far, little progress has been made toward those next stages. Major hurdles remain, including the disarmament of Hamas and establishing a timetable for Israel’s full withdrawal from Gaza.

Trump to host Syrian President al-Sharaa in White House visit

WASHINGTON D.C. — President Donald Trump is set to host Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the White House on November 10, marking the first-ever visit by a Syrian head of state to the U.S. seat of power, a senior administration official confirmed Saturday.

The visit signals a major shift in U.S.–Syria relations after decades of conflict and diplomatic isolation. It follows Trump’s earlier meeting with al-Sharaa in Riyadh last May, the first encounter between American and Syrian leaders in more than 25 years.

Al-Sharaa’s rise has been extraordinary. Once known under the nom de guerre Abu Mohammed al-Golani, he was linked to al-Qaida affiliates and even spent time in U.S. custody in Iraq. The United States once offered a $ 10 million bounty for his capture. Today, he presents himself as a reformist leader seeking to rebuild Syria’s shattered international reputation and economy.

During his address to the United Nations General Assembly in September, al-Sharaa urged Washington to lift its sanctions on Damascus, saying they were crippling Syria’s recovery. His upcoming meeting with Trump is expected to focus on Syria’s potential participation in the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS, as well as the gradual normalization of relations with regional neighbors, including Israel.

The visit comes at a delicate moment for Middle East diplomacy. Earlier this month, Israel and Hamas began implementing a ceasefire and hostage-release agreement that has tentatively paused more than two years of fighting in Gaza. Despite recent flare-ups, Washington hopes the fragile truce can pave the way for broader regional cooperation.

Trump, who has called the re-engagement with Syria a “bold step toward lasting peace,” is expected to discuss humanitarian assistance, counterterrorism coordination, and potential investment partnerships to rebuild Syria’s devastated infrastructure.

The White House declined to release the full agenda for security reasons, but officials described the visit as a “turning point in U.S. diplomacy with the Arab world.”

Analysts note that if successful, the meeting could open the door to Syria’s reintegration into international institutions after more than a decade of sanctions and conflict. Still, many Western governments remain skeptical of al-Sharaa’s transformation and question whether his leadership truly signals lasting reform.

The meeting, first reported by Axios and confirmed by Reuters, will be the first between an American president and a Syrian leader since Hafez Assad met with Bill Clinton in Geneva in 2000.

Lee Soo Man on his K-pop legacy, global vision, and what comes next

SEOUL, South Korea — Lee Soo Man, the man often called the “King of K-pop,” once found the title too extravagant. He preferred something more modest, like “Father of K-pop.” But when producers of Amazon Prime’s new documentary about his life insisted the bolder title would resonate with American viewers, he agreed.

That compromise reflects the 73-year-old founder’s pragmatic approach to taking South Korean pop music to the global stage. For more than three decades, Lee has shaped the K-pop industry and built SM Entertainment into one of its most influential institutions. This week, he is being inducted into the Asian Hall of Fame, joining basketball legend Yao Ming, Olympic skater Michelle Kwan, and rock icon Yoshiki.

Architect of a Global Sound

Lee is credited with designing K-pop’s blueprint, from its polished visuals to its intense artist training system. His label scouted and trained talents from a young age, developing performers who would later dominate global charts. Yet, his methods have also drawn controversy, as some artists challenged their contracts and questioned the industry’s fairness.

The recognition comes as Lee steps back into the public eye following his high-profile exit from SM Entertainment in 2023. The corporate dispute, which involved a management feud and a bidding war for his shares, ended his decades-long reign at the company he built.

Now, Lee is pursuing new ventures, including a multinational pop group called A2O MAY, launched in China and the United States. He has also invested in high-tech music production innovations through a boutique Chinese firm.

A Vision Fueled by Technology

A former computer engineering student in the United States, Lee’s background in technology deeply influenced his approach to music production. He incorporated advanced visualization, digital storytelling, and virtual avatars into K-pop long before they became industry trends.

He said he has recently rewatched The Matrix to study its production techniques, a reminder of how deeply technology and creativity intertwine in his philosophy.

For Lee, his Hall of Fame honor signifies that “K-pop has become a genre the mainstream now recognizes,” a validation earned after years of trial, error, and persistence.

Lessons from Early Setbacks

Lee’s first major attempt to break into the U.S. market came in 2009 with BoA’s single “Eat You Up.” He invested around $5 million in the project, making it one of the earliest collaborations between Korean talent and Western producers.

However, with few Asian stars visible in American pop culture at the time, the market was unprepared. “If we had revised the song, it could have done better,” Lee reflected, describing it as one of his lasting regrets.

That experience taught him the importance of sourcing global talent while maintaining Korean creative direction. It also inspired him to personally scout songs worldwide. He once flew to Finland to buy the rights to what would become S.E.S.’s “Dreams Come True,” a move that helped define K-pop’s global fusion sound.

Building the K-pop Universe

Lee’s innovation extended beyond music. He pioneered the idea of fictional “worldviews” for groups like EXO and aespa, creating interconnected storylines across albums and videos. The concept, inspired by MTV’s evolution of music into a visual medium, became a cornerstone of modern K-pop.

Without established screenwriters to help, Lee crafted many of these storylines himself. The result was a new model of fan engagement, one that encouraged global audiences to follow every “chapter” of a group’s journey.

A Regional Future for a Global Industry

Despite K-pop’s worldwide reach, Lee believes Asia remains its most promising frontier. He envisions South Korea as a creative hub for global producers. “Korea should become the country of producers,” he said, pointing to the region’s vast population and cultural influence.

His latest project, A2O MAY, embodies that idea. Operating in both China and the U.S., the group tests his theory of cross-border collaboration. Asked about China’s tightening control over entertainment, Lee was dismissive of political concerns. “Political risk? I don’t really know much about that,” he said.

He believes South Korea’s production expertise complements China’s cultural ambitions. “Culturally, does China need what we do? I believe they do.”

Confronting K-pop’s Darker Side

Lee has also spoken about the mental health struggles faced by K-pop artists, including tragic suicides among SM Entertainment stars. He blames unregulated online harassment and calls for international standards to hold anonymous abusers accountable.

He advocates for global systems that allow victims to identify perpetrators without lengthy and costly legal battles. Still, he urges the media to focus on K-pop’s potential rather than its controversies.

“Should we always weigh the dark side equally with the bright side?” he asked. “Rather than being dragged down by the past, shouldn’t we talk more about the future?”

The Language of Culture

After more than three decades in the industry, Lee’s definition of K-pop remains simple but profound.

“K-pop is a new language of communication that transcends barriers,” he said. “You can’t stop culture. It moves naturally, like language.”

Elon Musk launches ‘Grokipedia’ to rival Wikipedia

SAN FRANCISCO, California — Tech billionaire Elon Musk has launched Grokipedia, a new online encyclopedia that he claims will promote “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” positioning it as a direct challenger to Wikipedia.

Musk announced the site’s launch on social media, saying Grokipedia.com is “now live.” The platform, described as a crowdsourced encyclopedia, comes after months of Musk criticizing Wikipedia for what he calls “propaganda” and “political bias.” He had previously urged people to stop donating to the Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia.

The minimalist Grokipedia website features only a search bar and states that it currently hosts 885,279 articles. Wikipedia, by comparison, has more than seven million English-language entries. Like its rival, Grokipedia allows users to search for articles on a wide range of topics, from global events to pop culture.

It remains unclear how Grokipedia content is created or curated. Reports indicate that it may rely on Musk’s xAI technology, the same artificial intelligence model that powers his Grok chatbot. Observers have noted that some Grokipedia articles appear to be adapted from Wikipedia content.

In a statement, the San Francisco-based Wikimedia Foundation said it is “still in the process of understanding how Grokipedia works.” The foundation emphasized that Wikipedia’s open, volunteer-driven model has long been a vital resource for both readers and AI developers.

“This human-created knowledge is what AI companies rely on to generate content; even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist,” the organization said.

Wikipedia has recently faced scrutiny from political groups, particularly from conservative lawmakers in the United States who allege that bias exists in its editing process. In August, members of Congress opened an investigation into claims of “manipulation” in Wikipedia’s content moderation.

Wikipedia’s editorial process requires that nearly every statement be backed by a verifiable source, and unverified material can be removed. In contrast, some Grokipedia entries appear lightly sourced. For instance, its article on the Chola Dynasty of southern India lists three sources, while Wikipedia’s version cites more than 100 references and multiple scholarly works.

Grokipedia’s own entry about Wikipedia accuses the older site of harboring “systemic ideological biases” and a “left-leaning slant” in political coverage.

Responding to Musk’s project, the Wikimedia Foundation defended its long-standing editorial principles. “Unlike newer projects, Wikipedia’s strengths are clear: it has transparent policies, rigorous volunteer oversight, and a strong culture of continuous improvement,” it said. “Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, written to inform billions of readers without promoting a particular point of view.”

“‘Wag magmadali, matutong magbigay.

Siguradong may traffic dahil lahat gusto makauwi.
