Marcos leads turnover of new housing units in San Pablo City

SAN PABLO CITY, Laguna. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led the inauguration and awarding of new house-and-lot units at St. Barts Southville Heights in Barangay San Bartolome, San Pablo City, Laguna, on September 15. The project aims to provide permanent shelter for families displaced by major infrastructure works.

Marcos was welcomed by Laguna Governor Sol Aragones, San Pablo City Mayor Najie Gapangada, Congressman Loreto Amante, members of the San Pablo City Sangguniang Panlungsod, and other local officials.

The P769 million development, funded through the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) Trust Fund, was built for informal settler families (ISFs) affected by the Philippine National Railways (PNR) South Long Haul Project, Segments 2 to 7. Construction began in November 2023 and was completed in June 2025, benefiting 1,099 families.

Each awarded unit is a row house standing on a 40.50-square-meter lot with a 27.35-square-meter floor area. The site is equipped with a concrete road network featuring sidewalks, curbs, and gutters, an underground reinforced concrete pipe culvert drainage system, individual Level III water service connections, and Meralco power connections.

The National Housing Authority (NHA) highlighted its focus on sustainability and accessibility, with community facilities being developed alongside the housing units. These include a three-storey elementary school with 15 classrooms, a daycare center, a multi-purpose covered court with a training area, a wet and dry market, a health center, a livelihood training center, a tricycle terminal, a materials recovery facility, and a community police action building.

Additional features such as a retention pond, land marker, and main entrance gate have also been incorporated to ensure safety and orderliness within the community.

Construction began in November 2023 and was completed in June 2025, benefiting 1,099 families.

MAYNILA. Itinalaga ni Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. si dating Supreme Court Associate Justice Andres Reyes Jr. bilang chairperson ng Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI), ang ahensiyang magsisiyasat sa mga umano’y iregularidad sa mga flood control projects ng pamahalaan.

Noong Sabado, inanunsyo ng Malacañang ang pagkakatalaga kina dating Public Works Secretary Rogelio “Babes” Singson at Rossana Fajardo, country managing partner ng auditing firm na SGV and Co., bilang mga miyembro ng komisyon. Samantala, si Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong naman ang naitalagang special adviser.

Batay sa Executive Order No. 94, inatasan ang ICI na magsagawa ng imbestigasyon at pagsusuri sa ebidensya, intelligence reports, at impormasyon laban sa lahat ng opisyal at kawani ng pamahalaan, gayundin sa iba pang indibidwal, na sangkot umano sa mga anomalya, iregularidad, at maling paggamit ng pondo sa pagpaplano, pagpopondo, at pagpapatupad ng mga flood control at iba pang proyektong pang-imprastruktura sa bansa.

Prayoridad ng ICI ang pagsisiyasat sa mga flood control at iba pang proyekto sa nakalipas na sampung taon mula sa bisa ng naturang kautusan.

Ayon sa mandato, magsusumite ang komisyon ng mga rekomendasyon para sa pagsasampa ng civil at administrative cases laban sa mga mapatutunayang responsable sa angkop na tanggapan tulad ng Office of the President, Office of the Ombudsman, Department of Justice, at Civil Service Commission.

Exclusive: Young activists who toppled Nepal’s government now influencing new leadership

KATHMANDU, Nepal. A grassroots youth movement that helped bring down Nepal’s government is now playing a pivotal role in shaping the country’s interim leadership, according to activists and community members involved in the protests.

Sudan Gurung, a 36-year-old former DJ and founder of the non-profit Hami Nepal (We are Nepal), mobilized tens of thousands of young people through Discord and Instagram to stage demonstrations that forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign. Protesters clashed with authorities in what became Nepal’s deadliest political crisis in decades, leaving at least 72 dead and over 1,300 injured. Representatives for Oli could not be reached for comment.

“I was invited to join a group on Discord where there were about 400 members. It asked us to join the protest march a few kilometres from the parliament,” 18-year-old student Karan Kulung Rai, who is not affiliated with Hami Nepal, told Reuters.

The movement, largely driven by young adults often described as a “Gen Z” protest wave, quickly gained national traction. Hami Nepal’s early social media posts were so influential that they were referenced on national television. As demonstrations intensified, the group also flagged what it called “fake news” and shared hospital contact numbers.

Following Oli’s resignation, Gurung and his team emerged as influential power brokers. Members of Hami Nepal, who used proxy names online for security, said they persuaded Nepal’s president and army chief to appoint former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the country’s first female prime minister in an interim role. Elections are scheduled for March 5.

“I will make sure that the power lies with the people and bring every corrupt politician to justice,” Gurung said during his first press conference after the protests.

On Sunday, Hami Nepal leaders met to discuss cabinet positions and proposed the removal of some officials appointed under the previous administration. “Meetings are ongoing between Karki and members of the group. We will finalise the cabinet soon,” one member said. Gurung and Karki did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In an Instagram statement, Hami Nepal said the process was being “carefully carried out, so that it consists of skilled and capable youth.”

Despite their influence, Gurung and his colleagues maintain they do not seek government positions. “We don’t want to be politicians. Sudan Gurung was only helping the ‘Gen Z’ group, and we are only the voice of the nation and not interested in taking leadership positions,” said 26-year-old volunteer Ronesh Pradhan.

Gurung, who founded Hami Nepal after leading civic relief efforts during the 2015 earthquake that killed more than 9,000 people, also played a role in pandemic aid efforts. His current team includes 24-year-old café owner Ojaswi Raj Thapa and law graduate Rehan Raj Dangal, who help run the group’s Instagram and Discord accounts.

Thapa, a prominent figure in the protests, said judicial independence would be a top priority for the interim government. “We may need some changes to the constitution, but we don’t want to dissolve the constitution,” he told Reuters.

CHICAGO, United States. The village of Dolton, a suburb south of Chicago where Pope Leo XIV grew up, celebrated his 70th birthday on Sunday with gospel music, prayers, and a balloon release outside his childhood home.

A modest crowd gathered at the brick house where the former Robert Prevost lived after being born in Chicago in 1955. “It’s a good time for the community to come together,” said Village President Jason House. “It shows that great people come out of the village of Dolton.”

In July, the village purchased the three-bedroom home in hopes of attracting tourism and highlighting its connection to papal history, as Leo is the first American pope. Officials also said the initiative was meant to promote a positive image of the community, which has faced political turmoil in recent years, including allegations of misspending under a previous mayor. They attempted to contact the pope but did not receive a response.

When elected in May at age 69, Leo became the youngest pope since 1978, when Karol Wojtyla was chosen as Pope John Paul II at 58. He holds dual U.S. and Peruvian citizenship after spending two decades as a missionary in Peru.

In Illinois, photos of Leo as a child and as pope were displayed during the celebration, which included an a cappella rendition of “Break Every Chain,” Stevie Wonder’s version of “Happy Birthday,” and the release of silver star-shaped balloons. Attendees also prayed for his health and leadership.

Meanwhile, at the Vatican, the pope’s birthday was marked during his traditional noon blessing, where banners in English, Italian, and Spanish reading “Happy birthday” were displayed, along with balloons held aloft in St. Peter’s Square.

Dolton, once a small, mostly white town of a few thousand, has since grown into a community of about 20,000 residents, the majority of whom are Black.

“We hope people feel welcome,” House said.

Ayon kay Comelec Chairman George Garcia, ito ay bilang pagsunod sa itinakdang probisyon ng Konstitusyon na dapat ay 20 porsyento ng kabuuang bilang ng mga miyembro ng Kamara ay mula sa party-list system.

Ipinaliwanag ni Garcia na matapos ang kanilang pagsusuri, ang 63 party-list seats na ipinroklama matapos ang 2025 elections ay kumakatawan lamang sa 19 porsyento ng kabuuang bilang ng mga kinatawan.

Australia to face cascading climate risks, government report warns

CANBERRA, Australia. Australia will experience increasingly frequent and simultaneous extreme climate events that will put heavy pressure on health services, emergency response, infrastructure, and key industries, according to a government climate report released Monday.

The National Climate Risk Assessment, the country’s first comprehensive study on climate threats, stated that no community will be exempt from risks that are “cascading, compounding, and concurrent.” The report also warned that natural ecosystems and biodiversity face major challenges.

“While we can no longer avoid climate impacts, every action we take today towards our goal of net zero by 2050 will help avoid the worst impacts on Australian communities and businesses,” Energy Minister Chris Bowen said in a statement.

Bowen noted that northern Australia, remote areas, and the outer suburbs of major cities are particularly vulnerable. “Australians are already living with the consequences of climate change today but it’s clear every degree of warming we prevent now will help future generations avoid the worst impacts in years to come,” he said.

Alongside the report, the government released a National Adaptation Plan, which Bowen said would provide a framework for federal, state, and local governments to coordinate climate action. He added that the government would soon announce its next step in lowering carbon emissions, including “an ambitious and achievable 2035 target.”

Since taking office in 2022, the centre-left Labor government has committed A$3.6 billion ($2.39 billion) to climate adaptation programs, aiming to cut emissions by 43% by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050. Clean energy advocates had previously criticized Australia’s former conservative government as a global laggard on climate policy.

MAYNILA. Nakatakdang ng nationwide tigil-pasada ang ilang transport group mula Setyembre 17 hanggang 19 bilang protesta laban sa umano’y malawakang korapsyon sa bansa.

Sa inilabas na abiso ng grupong Manibela, sinabi nilang magsasagawa sila ng tigil-pasada mula Miyerkules hanggang Biyernes, Setyembre 17-19. Pagkatapos nito, makikilahok sila sa martsa sa Luneta, Maynila sa Setyembre 21, kasabay ng paggunita sa deklarasyon ng Martial Law.

Ayon sa grupo, layon ng protesta na manawagan ng pananagutan mula sa mga sangkot sa sinasabing maanomalyang flood control projects.

Ipinaliwanag din niya na umaabot sa P12,000 kada buwan ang buwis na kanilang naiaambag mula sa kanilang hanapbuhay, ngunit ikinadidismaya nila na ito umano’y nalulustay lamang sa mga maanomalyang proyekto.

KATHMANDU, Nepal. President Ramchandra Paudel has dissolved parliament and scheduled fresh elections for March 5, following a week of violent unrest that left dozens dead and culminated in the appointment of the country’s first woman prime minister.

Paudel’s office issued the announcement late Friday, just hours after he named former Chief Justice Sushila Karki to head the interim government. Her appointment came after “Gen Z”-led anti-corruption protests forced former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign.

The president confirmed that he had “dissolved the House of Representatives” and fixed the election date. Karki’s rise to office followed two days of negotiations involving Paudel, army chief Ashok Raj Sigdel, and protest leaders. The violence was described as Nepal’s worst upheaval in years, with at least 51 people killed and more than 1,300 injured.

India, Nepal’s southern neighbor, welcomed the developments. “Heartfelt congratulations to the Honorable Sushila Karki Ji on assuming the office of Prime Minister of Nepal’s interim government. India is fully committed to the peace, progress, and prosperity of Nepal’s brothers and sisters,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on X.

Nepal, a nation of 30 million situated between China and India, has faced recurring political and economic instability since abolishing its monarchy in 2008. Millions of young Nepalis continue to leave the country for work in the Middle East, South Korea, and Malaysia.

By Saturday, calm was returning to the capital, Kathmandu, with shops reopening and vehicles back on the streets after restrictions imposed earlier in the week were lifted.

Relatives of those killed during the protests gathered outside the Prime Minister’s official residence, demanding that their loved ones be declared martyrs — a recognition that grants state honors and compensation. Some families refused to claim bodies from the morgue until their demands were met.

“My brother should be declared a martyr as he died for the country, and the government should give compensation to my parents,” said Sumitra Mahat, sister of 21-year-old Umesh Mahat, one of the protesters killed. She and other relatives held banners displaying the photos of those who died, most of whom were reportedly shot.

Sa isang magkasanib na pahayag nitong Biyernes, iginiit nina Teodoro at Brawner na tinatanggihan nila “ang lahat ng pagtatangkang gamitin ang Armed Forces of the Philippines ng ilang grupo na nagmumungkahi ng mga hakbang na hindi naaayon sa konstitusyon at unilateral na interbensiyon.” Binigyang-diin nila na ang 160,000-kataong militar ay nananatiling propesyonal, hindi kumikiling sa pulitika, at “sumusunod sa konstitusyon sa pamamagitan ng chain-of-command.”

Dalawang mataas na opisyal ng seguridad ang nagsabi sa Associated Press na wala silang namomonitor na banta ng paghihiwalay-loob mula sa militar o pulisya. MAYNILA. Iginiit ng Malacañang na igagalang ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ang nakatakdang malakihang pagtitipon ng iba’t ibang grupo sa darating na Setyembre 21.

Ayon kay Palace Press Officer Atty. Claire Castro, nirerespeto ng Pangulo ang karapatan sa freedom of expression, at anumang nararamdaman at sentimyento ng mga mamamayan ay bibigyang halaga.

“Kung anuman ang nararamdaman at ang sentimyento ng ating mga kababayan sa ngayon ay igagalang ito,” pahayag ni Castro sa press briefing sa Palasyo.

Dagdag pa niya, ang nasabing pagtitipon ay nakatuon laban sa korapsiyon, isang laban na sinusuportahan din umano ng Pangulo. Gayunman, umaasa ang Malacañang na hindi ito magamit ng mga taong may masamang intensyon laban sa pamahalaan.

“Itong kanilang pagsisimyento ay huwag sanang sakyan ng ibang mga tao na hindi maganda ang naisin para sa gobyerno kundi mag-destabilize,” giit ni Castro.
