Trump to Meet Japan’s new Prime Minister Takaichi for trade and security talks

0

TOKYO — U.S. President Donald Trump will meet Japan’s newly appointed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Tokyo on Tuesday to discuss trade and regional security, a week after she became Japan’s first female leader and pledged to speed up the country’s military buildup.

Sources familiar with the meeting said Takaichi is expected to present a $550-billion investment package that includes expanded cooperation in shipbuilding and technology. She is also likely to announce additional purchases of U.S. pickup trucks, soybeans, and natural gas as part of efforts to strengthen trade relations.

Trump has long urged Japan to spend more on its defense amid growing concerns over China’s assertiveness in the region. However, officials said Takaichi is unlikely to go beyond Japan’s existing defense spending target of 2 percent of its GDP.

The U.S. president met Japan’s emperor on Monday and will hold summit talks with Takaichi at the Akasaka Palace, followed by a working lunch. Trump was last received at the same palace in 2019 for talks with the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was assassinated in 2022.

“I look forward to meeting the new prime minister,” Trump told reporters during his flight from Malaysia, where he attended the ASEAN summit. “I hear phenomenal things. She was a great ally and friend of Shinzo Abe, who was my friend.”

During their meeting, Takaichi plans to give Trump one of Abe’s golf clubs in a symbolic gesture recalling the friendship between Abe and Trump, according to a source familiar with the arrangements.

Analysts say building a close relationship with Trump could strengthen Takaichi’s political standing at home. Although her approval ratings have risen since taking office, her coalition remains two votes short of a majority in the lower house of parliament.

On Tuesday afternoon, Trump is scheduled to visit the U.S. naval base in Yokosuka, home to the aircraft carrier USS George Washington. Takaichi is expected to accompany him, local media reported.

Before leaving for South Korea on Wednesday, Trump will meet with business leaders in Tokyo. He is expected to continue discussions on trade, including a possible deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping, during his next stop.

During the testimonial dinner, San Pablo City Mayor Najie Gapangada lauded the athletes for bringing pride to the city and announced a tenfold increase in the city’s sports budget for DLSP from ₱500,000 to ₱5 million to boost athletic programs and training facilities.

To reward their achievements, Mayor Gapangada distributed cash incentives: ₱10,000 for gold medalists, ₱5,000 for silver medalists, and ₱3,000 for bronze medalists. Non-medalists received ₱2,000 each, while staff members were granted ₱1,000 each as a gesture of appreciation.

The mayor reaffirmed his full support for San Pablo’s sports development, stressing that success in athletics can be life-changing for young people by teaching discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. “Sports do not only build champions, they build character,” he said.

Japan’s sushi master Jiro Ono turns 100, says he’s not retiring yet

TOKYO — Japan’s world-renowned sushi master Jiro Ono, whose pursuit of perfection in sushi earned him three Michelin stars and global fame, celebrated his 100th birthday, still refusing to call it a retirement.

“I plan to keep going for about five more years,” Ono said last month as Japan marked its “Respect for the Aged Day.” When asked about the secret to his longevity, he answered, “To work.”

Ono, who founded the famed 10-seat Sukiyabashi Jiro in Tokyo’s Ginza district, said he can no longer visit the restaurant daily but continues to work whenever possible. “The best medicine is to work,” he told Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, who congratulated him on reaching the milestone.

Born in 1925 in Hamamatsu, central Japan, Ono began his apprenticeship at age seven in a local inn’s kitchen. By the age of 25, he had already become a sushi chef in Tokyo and opened Sukiyabashi Jiro in 1965. His devotion to the craft made him a global icon, inspiring the 2012 documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi, where he humbly said, “I haven’t reached perfection yet.”

Director David Gelb, who made the documentary, described Ono as both a mentor and a father figure. “He’s very funny and very sweet,” Gelb said, recalling how Ono once joked that filming an octopus being massaged for an hour might make “the most boring film ever.”

Over the decades, Ono has served world leaders and celebrities but remains known for his humility and discipline. When the Japanese government tried to book a table for then U.S. President Barack Obama and former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2014, Ono initially declined because the restaurant was fully booked. “They agreed to come later in the evening,” he said. “Obama was enjoying sushi, and I was happy.”

Sukiyabashi Jiro became the first sushi restaurant to earn three Michelin stars in 2007, maintaining the honor until 2019. Ono was later recognized by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest head chef of a three-Michelin-star restaurant at 93 years old.

The restaurant was eventually dropped from the Michelin Guide in 2020 after it began accepting reservations only from regular patrons or through luxury hotels. These days, Ono serves only a select few guests, admitting, “My hands don’t work so well.”

Still, he has no plans to stop. Watching news about Japan’s oldest man, who lived to 113, Ono reportedly remarked, “Thirteen more years seems doable. I will aim for 114.”

Ono credits his longevity to simple habits: he doesn’t drink alcohol, eats well, and walks regularly. When asked about his favorite sushi, his answer came without hesitation — maguro (tuna), kohada (gizzard shad), and anago (saltwater eel).

“It’s incredible that this tradition continues and that he’s still going strong at 100,” said Gelb. “It’s an inspiration to everyone.”

Hamas expands search for hostage remains as ceasefire holds fragile

CAIRO — Hamas has widened its search for the remains of Israeli hostages in the Gaza Strip, the group said Sunday, a day after Egypt sent a team of experts and heavy equipment to help recover bodies buried in the rubble.

The search is part of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement that took effect on October 10. Under the deal, Hamas must return all remaining hostages, while Israel is to hand over 15 Palestinian bodies for each one recovered.

Residents of Khan Younis watched as Egyptian crews used bulldozers and excavators to dig through debris near destroyed buildings. So far, Hamas has returned 15 sets of remains, but none in the past five days. Israel has transferred 195 Palestinian bodies, many still unidentified.

Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya said the group had begun searching new areas for the bodies of 13 remaining hostages. He added that efforts were hampered by widespread destruction across Gaza.

U.S. President Donald Trump warned Saturday that Washington was “watching very closely” to ensure Hamas fulfills its commitments within 48 hours. He said some of the remains “can be returned now” but accused the group of unnecessary delays.

An Egyptian team entered Gaza on Saturday with excavation machinery as part of ongoing mediation to reinforce the ceasefire, according to Egyptian officials who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces carried out a strike late Saturday in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. Al-Awda Hospital said it received several wounded. The Israeli military claimed it was targeting militants from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad who were planning attacks. The group denied the accusation.

Hamas condemned the airstrike as a “clear violation” of the ceasefire and accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of undermining U.S.-led efforts to end the war. Netanyahu defended the military action, saying Israel had the right to preempt threats.

The ceasefire remains fragile after a series of similar incidents. On October 19, Israel struck Nuseirat following the killing of two Israeli soldiers, launching dozens of attacks across Gaza that killed at least 36 Palestinians, according to local health authorities.

Gaza’s Health Ministry says more than 68,500 Palestinians have been killed since the war began two years ago after Hamas’ October 7, 2023, assault on Israel. The ministry’s figures, which include both civilians and combatants, are broadly accepted by U.N. agencies, though disputed by Israel, which has not released its own count.

Saturday’s airstrike came shortly after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio concluded his visit to Israel. He met officials at a new joint coordination center overseeing ceasefire implementation and reconstruction efforts. Around 200 U.S. troops are stationed at the center, though Washington maintains none are operating inside Gaza.

Rubio said Israel, the U.S,. and other mediators were sharing intelligence to prevent attacks, crediting the coordination for thwarting a potential assault last weekend.

The ceasefire framework still faces major challenges, including the disarmament of Hamas and plans for postwar governance in Gaza, where the U.N. continues to call for greater humanitarian access to address famine and displacement.
