Former South Korean first lady Kim Keon Hee indicted for bribery

0

SEOUL. South Korea’s former first lady Kim Keon Hee, the wife of ousted ex-president Yoon Suk Yeol, has been indicted on bribery and other charges, a special prosecution team announced Friday.

Both Kim and Yoon are currently in jail. Yoon is already on trial for insurrection after his removal from office in April, following his failed attempt to impose martial law in December.

The indictment of Kim comes as part of separate investigations by special prosecutors appointed after Yoon’s ouster and the inauguration of liberal President Lee Jae Myung in June.

Kim, accused of stock fraud and bribery involving business owners, religious figures, and a political broker, faces prison if convicted. In a statement released through her lawyers, she apologized for “causing concerns” and vowed to face trial without excuses.

“Just as moonlight shines brightly in the darkest night, I too will endure this time, looking to my truth and heart,” Kim said, without addressing the charges directly.

Kim has long been entangled in scandals that overshadowed her husband’s turbulent presidency. Her lawyers denied the allegations, dismissing reports about alleged gifts as “groundless speculation.”

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who became acting president after Yoon’s impeachment, was also indicted Friday for abetting insurrection and committing perjury. Prosecutors said Han failed to stop Yoon’s unconstitutional martial law order.

Han, a veteran technocrat who served under five presidents, denied aiding Yoon but admitted some responsibility for not preventing the crisis. His impeachment was later overturned by the Constitutional Court, but he resigned after political rifts ended his presidential ambitions.

Senado at Kamara pumayag sa lifestyle check

MAYNILA.

UK, France and Germany to reimpose UN sanctions on Iran

UNITED NATIONS. France, Germany, and the United Kingdom announced Thursday that they have triggered the United Nations’ “snapback” mechanism to reimpose sanctions on Iran, citing Tehran’s failure to cooperate with international inspectors and escalating concerns over its nuclear program following a 12-day war with Israel.

The snapback process, created under the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, is designed to be veto-proof and could take effect within a month. The sanctions would freeze Iranian assets abroad, halt arms transactions, and penalize any development of its ballistic missile program, further tightening pressure on the country’s already fragile economy.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said on social media that the measure was not the end of diplomacy but a way to encourage negotiations. “We are determined to make the most of the 30-day period that is now opening to engage in dialogue with Iran,” he wrote.

Iran quickly rejected the move. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called it “unjustified” and “lacking any legal basis,” warning that Tehran would respond appropriately. The Iranian Foreign Ministry later added that the decision would “gravely undermine” cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The European countries had warned earlier this month that Iran risked triggering the snapback after halting IAEA inspections following Israeli strikes in June. The war damaged Iranian nuclear facilities and killed senior military leaders, forcing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei into hiding.

The three nations formalized their decision with a letter to the U.N. Security Council, while France and the UK requested closed consultations on Iran’s noncompliance. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed the move, saying America “remains available for direct engagement with Iran,” and stressed that the snapback “enhances diplomacy.”

Analysts warn that the move could sharply escalate tensions between Iran and the West, already heightened by the war in Gaza and Israeli strikes on Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. The Soufan Center, a U.S.-based think tank, noted that Iranian leaders view snapback sanctions as an effort to destabilize the regime by crippling the economy.

On Thursday, Iran’s rial fell to more than 1 million to $1, a dramatic collapse from 32,000 to $1 when the 2015 accord was signed. Ordinary Iranians expressed deep anxiety over the situation, with one Tehran resident telling the Associated Press that “many of us feel a deep sense of uncertainty and desperation.”

Before the June war, Iran had enriched uranium to 60 percent purity, just short of weapons-grade levels. Western officials fear Iran may have moved sensitive nuclear material to undisclosed locations, raising new challenges for IAEA monitoring.

The snapback mechanism is set to expire on October 18. After that, any sanctions measure would require Security Council approval and face likely vetoes from Russia and China, both of which have offered Tehran some support. Moscow and Beijing introduced a draft resolution Thursday to extend U.N. sanctions relief by six months, as Russia prepares to assume the presidency of the Security Council in October.

San Pablo City nagtanim ng libo-libong punla ng niyog, target Guinness World Record

SAN PABLO CITY, Laguna.

Israeli tanks advance near Gaza City, Trump to lead White House meeting

CAIRO/WASHINGTON. Israeli tanks pushed into the northern edge of Gaza City overnight, shelling homes and forcing residents to flee as preparations continued for a new offensive, witnesses said Wednesday.

Residents reported that tanks entered the Ebad-Alrahman neighborhood late Tuesday, wounding several people and driving many deeper into Gaza’s largest city. “All of a sudden, we heard the tanks, explosions grew louder, and we saw people escaping,” said Saad Abed, 60, who lives about a kilometer away.

Israel has described Gaza City as Hamas’ last stronghold and said civilians will be ordered to evacuate. Church leaders in the city, however, announced they would remain, warning that fleeing south “would be nothing less than a death sentence.”

Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee said evacuation was “inevitable” and that tents were being brought into Gaza to house displaced residents. Palestinian and UN officials estimate the enclave needs 1.5 million tents.

In Washington, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff said President Donald Trump will chair a White House meeting on the war Wednesday, with officials expecting the conflict to be resolved by year-end. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is also scheduled to meet Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar.

Later on Wednesday, tanks pulled back to the Jabalia area north of Gaza City, though bombardments continued in several eastern districts. Gaza health authorities said at least 20 people were killed across the enclave, including a four-year-old girl.

The Israeli military said its forces were targeting “terror infrastructure” and confirmed the killing of senior Hamas security official Mahmoud Al-Aswad last week. Hamas has not confirmed his death.

Meanwhile, protests in Israel have intensified, with thousands demanding an end to the war and the release of hostages still held by Hamas. Israel has not responded to the latest U.S.-backed 60-day ceasefire proposal, which Hamas has accepted.

The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led fighters killed 1,200 people in Israel and abducted 251 hostages. Since then, more than 62,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to health authorities, while hundreds have died from starvation and malnutrition. Israel disputes the casualty figures released by Gaza’s health ministry.

401 buto ng tao, narekober sa Taal Lake

MAYNILA.

Pope Leo XIV urges Israel to end Gaza collective punishment

ROME. Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday demanded an end to what he described as Israel’s “collective punishment” and forced displacement of Palestinians in Gaza, urging both sides to agree to an immediate and permanent ceasefire as Israel prepares for a new military offensive.

Speaking before thousands during his weekly general audience at the Vatican, the American-born pontiff was twice interrupted by applause as he appealed for peace in the war that has raged for 22 months.

“I beg for a permanent ceasefire to be reached, the safe entry of humanitarian aid to be facilitated and humanitarian law to be fully respected,” Leo said. He cited international law prohibiting collective punishment, indiscriminate use of force, and the forced displacement of civilians.

The pope also called for the release of the remaining hostages seized by Hamas in southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. Hamas abducted 251 people in the attack that killed around 1,200, triggering the war. While most hostages have since been freed or rescued, Israel believes about 20 of the 50 still in Gaza remain alive.

Israel has signaled plans for an expanded offensive in Gaza City, where famine has been documented, even as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists he is also pursuing a ceasefire. Families of hostages have objected to the offensive, saying it would endanger their loved ones.

Leo highlighted a joint statement from the Latin and Greek Orthodox patriarchs of Jerusalem, who said priests and nuns in Gaza City would remain despite evacuation orders, warning that moving the frail and malnourished people sheltering in churches would amount to a “death sentence.”

The Holy Family Catholic Church and Saint Porphyrius Orthodox Church have sheltered hundreds of civilians, including the elderly, women, children, and people with disabilities. The pope, even during his recent hospitalization, maintained daily contact with the Holy Family parish priest to offer solidarity with those trapped in Gaza.

The pontiff’s appeal echoed his comments last weekend to refugees from the Chagos Islands, when he insisted that “all peoples, even the smallest and weakest, must be respected in their identity and rights, especially the right to live in their own lands, and no one can force them into exile.”

Netanyahu has said Gaza’s population could be relocated abroad through what his government describes as voluntary emigration. Rights groups and Palestinian leaders have condemned the idea, fearing displaced residents would never be allowed to return.

Two Children killed, 17 wounded in shooting at Minneapolis Catholic school

MINNEAPOLIS. A gunman opened fire on children and parishioners inside a Catholic church in Minneapolis on Wednesday morning, killing two students and wounding 17 others before taking his own life, in what federal officials are investigating as an act of domestic terrorism and a hate crime targeting Catholics.

Police identified the shooter as 23-year-old Robin Westman, who arrived at Annunciation Catholic School armed with a rifle, shotgun, and pistol, and fired dozens of rounds through stained-glass windows during a Mass marking the first week of classes. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the attack began shortly before 8:30 a.m. and ended when the assailant died by suicide at the rear of the church.

The victims included two children, aged 8 and 10, who died inside the church. Fourteen other students, ages 6 to 18, and three parishioners in their 80s were injured but are expected to recover, O’Hara said.

“The sheer cruelty and cowardice of firing into a church full of children is absolutely incomprehensible,” the police chief told reporters, adding that wooden planks had been used to barricade some side doors and that a smoke bomb was also found at the scene.

Videos and writings posted online before the attack suggested the suspect had struggled with depression, admired perpetrators of past mass shootings, and left erratic political messages scrawled on weapons. A YouTube channel linked to the suspect showed firearms and ammunition, some marked with phrases such as “Where is your God?” before the account was removed.

O’Hara said the suspect appeared to act alone and had no significant criminal history. Weapons were legally purchased in recent months, and additional firearms were recovered from locations linked to Westman.

The FBI and Homeland Security are investigating, with FBI Director Kash Patel calling it a domestic terrorism case. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey condemned the attack and warned against politicizing the suspect’s gender identity. Court records show Westman legally changed name from Robert to Robin in 2020, identifying as female.

“Anybody who is using this as an opportunity to villainize our trans community, or any other community, has lost their sense of common humanity,” Frey said. He also cited the easy availability of firearms as a continuing driver of mass shootings in the United States.

Parents and students described scenes of chaos and heroism as children hid under pews or barricaded themselves in classrooms while older students and teachers shielded the younger ones. Fifth-grader Weston Halsne said a friend lying on top of him was struck by gunfire. “I was super scared for him, but I think now he’s okay,” the 10-year-old said.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and President Donald Trump ordered flags lowered to half-staff in mourning. Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, sent condolences from the Vatican, praying for the victims and their families. Local leaders, including U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, visited the scene, while Archbishop Gregory Hartmeyer of Atlanta called the killings “unspeakable” and urged passage of reasonable gun legislation.

Annunciation Catholic School, founded more than a century ago, enrolls nearly 400 students. The shooting took place during the traditional all-school Mass held at the start of each academic year.

“This violence has forever changed our children’s families and our city,” Mayor Frey said. “Don’t just say this is about thoughts and prayers right now. These kids were literally praying.”
