Japan’s most sacred Shinto shrine rebuilt every 20 years for over a thousand years

ISE, Japan. Deep in the forests of central Japan, a centuries-old tradition continues as Shinto priests and woodsmen harvest ancient cypress trees in preparation for the reconstruction of Ise Jingu, the country’s most sacred Shinto shrine.

For more than 1,300 years, the shrine has been torn down and rebuilt every 20 years, a ritual known as Shikinen Sengu. The process, now entering its 63rd cycle, began earlier this year and will culminate in 2033 with a sacred ceremony transferring the enshrined deity to the newly completed structure.

The rebuilding, estimated at $390 million and spanning nine years, involves the painstaking work of Japan’s most skilled carpenters, woodcutters, and artisans. All 125 shrine buildings, along with over 1,500 ritual objects and garments, are recreated using traditional methods passed down through generations.

At the heart of Ise is the Inner Shrine, dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu, who has been worshipped there for two millennia. The shrine’s impermanence reflects Shinto’s emphasis on renewal and continuity.

“After 20 years, the shrine we are building will have deteriorated quite a bit. But instead of thinking, ‘It’s a shame to tear down something we worked so hard to build,’ we think, ‘It’s been 20 years, so we want the deity to move into a beautiful, fresh, new shrine,’” said Shinto priest Yosuke Kawanishi, whose family has long crafted miniature replicas of Ise.

The reconstruction has only been interrupted twice in history: during Japan’s civil wars in the 15th and 16th centuries, and after World War II. Despite these breaks, the cycle has endured as a defining tradition of Japanese spirituality and craftsmanship.

The ceremonies draw thousands of pilgrims and are part of a larger flow of about 7 million annual visitors to Ise. Observers often describe the rituals as deeply moving, connecting them with centuries of spiritual and cultural continuity.

“You can count with one hand the number of times you’ll witness something like this in your lifetime, so I really felt it was a rare and precious sight,” said visitor Yuto Nakase.

Even the felling of trees carries spiritual meaning. Woodsmen chant prayers and insert the tip of a cut tree into the stump of another, symbolizing regeneration. “You take a moment to appreciate that trees are living beings and engrave that feeling into your heart,” said Soju Ikeda, a lumber expert who manages traditional tree-felling practices.

Artisans at Ise spend decades preparing materials such as cypress and thatching reeds for future reconstructions, with cultivation often spanning longer than a human lifespan.

As night falls, priests perform purification rituals by lantern light, culminating in the consecration of sacred pillars beneath the shrine’s main sanctuary. Visitors describe the atmosphere as mysterious and transformative.

“It doesn’t say much, doesn’t show much and doesn’t offer much explanation. It’s something you feel,” said Kawanishi.

For many, the tradition embodies both fragility and endurance, a spiritual cycle that has withstood the tests of history and continues to shape Japan’s cultural identity.

Shinto officials in the priesthood pull a sacred timber on a wheeled platform into a position before unloading and moving it under the roof at the end of Mihishirogi Hoeishiki, a ceremony of the Shikinen Sengu ritual to rebuild main structures of the Jingu shrine complex for Shinto deities, at Toyoukedaijingu, also known as Geku, or the outer sanctuary of Jingu, in Ise, central Japan, Tuesday, June 10, 2025, after the cypress timbers were transported from Nagano prefecture’s Kiso region to the city. Trump lashes out at world leaders in fiery UN speech, says nations are ‘going to hell’

UNITED NATIONS. U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a combative 56-minute speech before the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, urging countries to curb migration, abandon climate change initiatives, and adopt stronger measures against Russia while dismissing calls for a Palestinian state.

The address marked a return to Trump’s sharp rhetoric toward the U.N., which he frequently criticized during his first term. Delegates offered polite applause as he concluded his remarks.

Much of Trump’s speech centered on immigration and climate change, which he described as existential threats to Western nations. He praised U.S. immigration restrictions as a model for the world, declaring, “I’m really good at this stuff. Your countries are going to hell.” Human rights groups argue that migrants are fleeing hardship in search of better lives.

On climate policy, Trump dismissed scientific consensus, calling climate change a “con job” and warning that reliance on renewable energy would undermine Europe’s future. “Immigration and their suicidal energy ideas will be the death of Western Europe,” he said. This stance comes days after his meeting with Britain’s King Charles, a strong advocate for environmental action.

Trump also renewed his criticism of NATO allies, mocking European nations for continuing to purchase Russian oil. “They’re funding the war against themselves. Who the hell ever heard of that one?” he said, adding that the U.S. is prepared to impose tariffs against Moscow but would need Europe to adopt similar measures. He did not specify details but has considered sanctions extending to countries such as India and China.

Later, Trump met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who pressed for more U.S. support against Russian advances. When asked if NATO should shoot down Russian aircraft entering allied airspace, Trump responded, “Yes, I do.”

On the Middle East, Trump rejected international moves to recognize a Palestinian state, saying, “The rewards would be too great for Hamas terrorists, for their atrocities.” He reiterated U.S. support for a ceasefire-for-hostages deal to secure the return of all remaining captives. “We have to stop the war in Gaza immediately. We have to immediately negotiate peace,” he said. Trump was also scheduled to discuss Gaza with Gulf leaders later in the day.

Trump, who has positioned himself as a peacemaker in pursuit of a Nobel Peace Prize, criticized the U.N. for failing to support his global peace initiatives. He also voiced personal grievances, joking that he and First Lady Melania Trump had once been stranded on a malfunctioning escalator inside the U.N. headquarters and that his teleprompter had briefly failed during the speech. “These are the two things I got from the United Nations — a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter,” he remarked.

PAGASA: Opong lumakas at naging bagyo na

MAYNILA. Itinaas ng Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) nitong Miyerkules ang kategorya ng tropical depression Opong matapos itong lumakas at maging isang tropical storm habang nasa loob ng Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).

Ayon sa tropical cyclone bulletin ng PAGASA, “Opong is less likely to directly affect the weather condition of the country in the next 24 hours. The onset of heavy rains due to Opong is possible by tomorrow, 25 September, onwards.”

“Nando will begin to weaken due to marginally favorable environment over the waters south of mainland China and the increasing frictional effects due to proximity to land. Further weakening is expected post landfall this afternoon or evening,” ayon pa sa PAGASA.

Weather forecast

Joel Villanueva, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, dating Sen. Bong Revilla, Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co, dating Caloocan Rep. Mitch Cajayon, at Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Undersecretary Roberto Bernardo.

NASA names 10 new astronauts, majority are women

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. NASA has unveiled its newest group of astronauts, selecting 10 candidates from more than 8,000 applicants to help lead future missions to the moon and potentially Mars.

For the first time in history, women outnumber men in an incoming astronaut class, with six women and four men chosen. The group includes a geologist who worked on NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover and a SpaceX engineer who already flew to orbit on a billionaire-funded mission that featured the world’s first private spacewalk last year.

The candidates will undergo two years of rigorous training before becoming eligible for spaceflight.

Acting NASA Administrator Sean Duffy emphasized the significance of the selection, noting that one of the new astronauts could be among the first to set foot on Mars. He also underscored the United States’ determination to maintain its leadership in space exploration.

“You are America’s best and brightest, and we’re going to need America’s best and brightest because we have a bold exploration plan for the future,” Duffy said during Monday’s ceremony at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. “Some are challenging our leadership in space, say like the Chinese … We are going to win.”

Since its inception, NASA has selected only 370 astronauts, the vast majority men. The 10 new additions will join the 41 active U.S. astronauts currently serving.

NASA’s flight operations director, Norm Knight, praised the incoming class as “distinguished” and “exceptional,” highlighting their diverse backgrounds. The group includes military pilots, a medical doctor, a former SpaceX launch director, and specialists in geology and engineering.

Air Force Maj. Adam Fuhrmann recalled receiving the call while stuck in rush-hour traffic, pulling into a parking lot to ensure he heard correctly. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Erin Overcash said her reaction was a mix of disbelief and excitement: “No way. I mean, I mean, yes, of course. But like no way.” She added that her experience living on a ship with 5,000 people would help her adjust to the challenges of space.

Among the most notable members of the class is Anna Menon, NASA’s first astronaut candidate, who has already been to orbit. She flew alongside billionaire Jared Isaacman on a SpaceX mission last September. At Johnson, she will join her husband, a former SpaceX flight surgeon selected in NASA’s previous astronaut class.

Also included is Lauren Edgar of the U.S. Geological Survey, who worked on the Curiosity rover and contributed to the Artemis program’s science team for the next planned moon landing, targeted no earlier than 2027. “I am so excited to be officially part of the NASA family,” Edgar said.

World leaders back Palestinian statehood at UN, defying US and Israel

UNITED NATIONS. Dozens of world leaders voiced support for the recognition of a Palestinian state during a high-level meeting at the United Nations on Monday, a significant diplomatic shift nearly two years into the Gaza war that faces strong opposition from Israel and the United States.

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would formally recognize Palestine at the meeting he convened with Saudi Arabia, calling the move a step toward keeping the two-state solution alive. “We must pave the way for peace,” Macron said. “We must do everything within our power to preserve the very possibility of a two-state solution, Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security.” His remarks were met with lengthy applause.

The announcement comes as Israel’s government, described as the most far-right in its history, has rejected the establishment of a Palestinian state. Israeli forces continue their offensive in Gaza against Hamas following the October 7, 2023, attack that killed some 1,200 people in Israel. Local health authorities say more than 65,000 Palestinians have since been killed in Gaza, with Israel facing global criticism for its military conduct.

Israel launched a long-threatened ground assault on Gaza City in recent weeks, with no sign of a ceasefire on the horizon. Israeli officials have warned that international recognition of Palestine will undermine the prospects for peace.

Other leaders joined Macron in voicing support. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres all took part in the event. Sanchez, whose government recognized Palestine in 2024, told Reuters that momentum for recognition is growing. “Within Western society, there’s a large majority nowadays of countries that already recognize the Palestine state,” he said.

Macron outlined a framework for a renewed Palestinian Authority under which France would open an embassy, subject to reforms, a ceasefire, and the release of hostages held by Hamas. Ahead of this week’s UN General Assembly, Luxembourg, Malta, Belgium, and Monaco also joined the majority of UN member states that recognize Palestine.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, unable to attend after being denied a U.S. visa, urged nations via video link to extend their support. “We call for your support so that Palestine becomes a full-fledged member of the United Nations,” he said, promising reforms and elections within a year of a ceasefire.

Currently, Palestine holds observer status at the UN without voting rights. Full membership requires approval from the Security Council, where the United States holds veto power.

The United States and Israel boycotted Monday’s meeting. Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon said his government would consider its response after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu returns from his scheduled meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on September 29. Netanyahu has repeatedly rejected calls to recognize a Palestinian state, insisting that the war against Hamas must continue until the group is destroyed.

While more European countries are moving to recognize Palestine, key states such as Germany and Italy have signaled reluctance. Germany, citing its historical responsibility for the Holocaust, insists recognition should follow a negotiated peace process, while Italy warned recognition could be “counterproductive.”

Israel is reportedly weighing the possible annexation of parts of the occupied West Bank as a response to the recognition efforts, despite risks of alienating Arab states such as the United Arab Emirates, which normalized ties with Israel under the 2020 Abraham Accords. The UAE has warned that annexation would undermine the agreement.

The United States has also cautioned against punitive measures targeting Israel, including potential consequences for France as host of the UN summit.

Bagyong Opong posibleng mabuo, banta sa Visayas at Luzon

MAYNILA.

THE HAGUE.

“The Prosecution charges the murders and attempted murders below, although the actual scale of victimization during the charged period was significantly greater, as reflected in the widespread nature of the attack,” ayon sa dokumentong nilagdaan ni ICC Deputy Prosecutor Mame Mandiaye Niang.

Ayon sa dokumento, “Together, Duterte and his co-perpetrators established a network of perpetrators comprising State actors such as law enforcement officers (including personnel from the PNP, PDEA, the NBI and the Bureau of Corrections (“BuCor”)), non-police assets and hitmen (together, “the National Network”), to operate in a similar manner as the DDS in conducting operations to kill alleged criminals in accordance with the Common Plan.”

That is one confirmation that they intend to burn the Palace… The capacity to burn the Palace is very difficult but the intent is there.”

“None of the protesters were seriously hurt… by seriously, I mean that they would have to be hospitalized. The police got hurt more than the protesters,” aniya.

Anti-corruption rally rocks Manila, booing of Chavit Singson highlights deep public distrust

0

MANILA, Philippines. Thousands of Filipinos demonstrated on Sunday in an anti-corruption rally that brought both unity and discontent, as some public figures attending were booed by parts of the crowd. The protest, sparked by allegations of massive kickbacks in flood-control projects, saw more than 33,000 peaceful participants, while a smaller group broke away into violent clashes with the police near the presidential palace.

At the “Trillion Peso March,” held at multiple locations including the EDSA Shrine and the People Power Monument, celebrities and politicians showed up in solidarity. However, among them, former Ilocos Sur governor Luis “Chavit” Singson was booed by protesters near Corinthian Gardens during the march along EDSA.

Celebrities such as Vice Ganda, Angel Aquino, Jodi Sta. Maria, Catriona Gray, and others also participated to lend voice to the outrage. Vice Ganda shouted strong words against corrupt officials, saying, “They’re animals.” “Father, forgive me, but f**k them. I know the mass has just ended, but Lord, forgive me because this is true. This is the language of all Filipinos whose money was stolen,” he said. He even called for the restoration of the death penalty for corrupt government officials.

Meanwhile, a faction of the protest turned violent near the presidential palace, where 49 people were arrested for throwing rocks, bottles, and fire bombs at officers, blocking roads and bridges. About 70 officers were injured. Police deployed tear gas to disperse the assailants, who vandalised property, including ransacking a budget inn, spraying graffiti, toppling posts and shattering glass. Schools in the vicinity were closed due to the disturbances.

Activists condemned what they described as misappropriation of public funds. Althea Trinidad, a student from Bulacan, said, “I feel bad that we wallow in poverty and we lose our homes, our lives, and our future while they rake in a big fortune from our taxes that pay for their luxury cars, foreign trip,s and bigger corporate transactions.” Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David called on citizens to act peacefully, stating, “Our purpose is not to destabilize but to strengthen our democracy.”

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has responded by establishing an independent commission to investigate anomalies in roughly 9,855 flood-control projects believed to involve over 545 billion pesos since mid-2022. Several contracts awarded to construction companies are now under scrutiny.

The booing of Chavit Singson reflects a deeper frustration among protesters not only with corruption but with the presence of figures viewed with distrust. Some attendees welcomed high-profile participants while others expressed that those seen as part of traditional power structures should not expect support without accountability.

Former Ilocos Sur governor Luis “Chavit” Singson is met with loud boos as he arrives at the anti-corruption rally in Manila, a reaction that underscores protesters’ frustration with figures long associated with traditional politics.
