Wrestling legend Hulk Hogan dies at 71 in Florida

CLEARWATER, Fla. Hulk Hogan, the larger-than-life professional wrestling icon who transformed the sport into a global entertainment powerhouse, died Thursday in Florida at age 71.

According to local authorities, Hogan, born Terry Bollea, was pronounced dead at a hospital less than 90 minutes after emergency responders answered a call about a cardiac arrest at his Clearwater home early Thursday morning.

Hogan was a defining figure in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), headlining the very first WrestleMania in 1985 and becoming the face of professional wrestling for decades. He clashed with some of the industry’s biggest names, including Andre the Giant, Randy Savage, The Rock, and even WWE co-founder Vince McMahon.

“Hulkamania,” the phenomenon sparked by Hogan’s star power, pushed pro wrestling into mainstream culture in the 1980s. With his trademark red-and-yellow gear, bandana, and signature mustache, Hogan became a household name — his catchphrases and shirt-ripping theatrics drawing massive crowds around the world.

“He was a trailblazer, the first performer who transitioned from being a wrestling star into a global phenomenon,” McMahon said in a statement.

Outside the ring, Hogan starred in TV shows, movies, and reality television, including VH1’s “Hogan Knows Best.” He also made headlines for personal scandals, most notably a 2012 sex tape scandal involving the wife of his former best friend. The incident led to a $140 million lawsuit against Gawker Media, which ended in a settlement after Gawker filed for bankruptcy.

The scandal also unearthed a recording of Hogan using racial slurs, leading WWE to cut ties with him in 2015. He was removed from the WWE Hall of Fame but was reinstated in 2018 after issuing a public apology, calling his comments “unacceptable.”

Despite controversy, Hogan continued to shape wrestling and remained active in the entertainment world. In April, he announced plans to serve as the inaugural commissioner of Real American Freestyle, a new wrestling league promoting unscripted matches.

He also remained politically outspoken. At the 2024 Republican National Convention, Hogan endorsed Donald Trump with a dramatic performance reminiscent of his wrestling persona, earning praise from the former president.

“We lost a great friend today, the ‘Hulkster,’” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Hulk Hogan was MAGA all the way, Strong, tough, smart, but with the biggest heart.”

Hogan’s wrestling career spanned more than four decades. He became WWF (now WWE) champion in 1984 and helped launch the annual WrestleMania franchise. His iconic body slam of Andre the Giant at WrestleMania III in 1987 remains one of wrestling’s most memorable moments.

He later reinvented himself in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) as “Hollywood Hogan,” forming the villainous New World Order (nWo) faction during the Monday Night Wars of the 1990s. Hogan returned to WWE in 2002, even headlining WrestleMania X8 against The Rock in what was seen as a symbolic passing of the torch.

Off the mat, Hogan was known for his charisma and energetic promos, often beginning interviews with the legendary phrase, “Well, lemme tell ya something, Mean Gene!” a nod to announcer “Mean” Gene Okerlund.

Hogan was born in Georgia but grew up in Florida, where he discovered his passion for wrestling as a teenager. He spent much of his life in the Tampa Bay area, where he remained a beloved local figure despite the ups and downs of his public life.

Fans gathered outside Hogan’s Hangout, his Clearwater Beach restaurant, on Thursday to pay tribute. “He was a really super nice guy, and we’re gonna miss him,” said Rich Null, a fan who once worked out with Hogan.

Hogan is survived by his children and wife, Sky Daily, whom he married in 2023. His legacy, both in and out of the ring, continues to shape the world of professional wrestling and American pop culture.

US halts Gaza ceasefire talks, blames Hamas for lack of ‘good faith’

The United States has pulled out of Gaza ceasefire negotiations and recalled its diplomatic team from Qatar, citing Hamas’ alleged unwillingness to engage constructively in peace efforts.

President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, announced on Thursday that Hamas’ most recent response “shows a lack of desire” to reach a truce. “While the mediators have made a great effort, Hamas does not appear to be coordinated or acting in good faith,” Witkoff said. “We will now consider alternative options to bring the hostages home and try to create a more stable environment for the people of Gaza.”

The U.S. State Department did not elaborate on what these “alternative options” might be. Spokesperson Tommy Pigott reiterated Washington’s commitment to achieving a ceasefire but said, “this is a very dynamic situation.”

Hamas, in a statement released early Friday, expressed surprise at Witkoff’s remarks. It claimed it had shown flexibility in the talks and remained committed to reaching a permanent ceasefire to end hostilities and ease humanitarian suffering in Gaza.

Efforts to broker a truce between Israel and Hamas have dragged on for weeks without resolution, as humanitarian conditions in Gaza continue to worsen. Talks have been hampered by conflicting demands: Hamas insists on a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in exchange for the release of all hostages, while Israel demands Hamas relinquish control and disarm before the war ends.

The latest ceasefire proposal reportedly involved a 60-day truce during which Hamas would release 10 living hostages and the remains of 18 others in phases. In exchange, Israel would free Palestinian prisoners and allow increased aid deliveries. Further negotiations for a long-term ceasefire would follow.

However, the negotiations faltered after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office recalled its team, citing Hamas’ uncooperative response. The Israeli government acknowledged the efforts of U.S., Qatari, and Egyptian mediators but provided no further details.

Hamas said it had provided a final response after consultations with Palestinian factions and regional actors, stressing that it was willing to ease obstacles to secure a deal.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is reaching catastrophic levels. Aid agencies warn that the territory is on the brink of famine, with nearly 100,000 women and children suffering from severe malnutrition, according to the U.N. World Food Programme. The Gaza Health Ministry has reported an increase in deaths related to hunger.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to hold an emergency call with leaders from France and Germany to coordinate urgent food aid and discuss steps toward a lasting peace. “The suffering and starvation unfolding in Gaza is unspeakable and indefensible,” Starmer said. He urged Israel to allow unrestricted humanitarian access.

French President Emmanuel Macron echoed the call, announcing that France would recognize the state of Palestine. “The urgent thing today is that the war in Gaza stops and the civilian population is saved,” he said.

Israel, under increasing international pressure, maintains that it is allowing sufficient aid into Gaza and accuses U.N. agencies of distribution failures. However, aid groups argue that Israeli restrictions and security breakdowns make safe delivery nearly impossible. A parallel aid system supported by the U.S. and Israel has also struggled with logistical chaos.

Despite mounting criticism, the U.S. continues to blame Hamas for prolonging the war. “Of course, we want to see the end of devastation that is taking place in Gaza,” Pigott said. “That is why we have supported the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. That is why we’ve seen those 90 million meals being distributed.”

The White House has not yet commented on the decision to withdraw from talks.

A SIGHT TO BEHOLD? No or late class suspension, seeing schoolchildren carried on parents’ backs

At around 1:00 p.m. of July 21, students returning home from schools, colleges, and universities were stranded on the roads. Mga basang sisiw (wet chicks). They instantly gained weight because even their socks were wet. High-ranking government officials apologized and said they made a mistake in not immediately declaring the suspension of classes and promised it would never happen again.

“Ano’ng tuwa’t saya ang aming dala (What joy and happiness do we bring),” the mice sang. Leptospirosis! Not funny, and if going to school is an escape, going home when classes are cut amidst inundated streets and overflowing bridges treats young people to the art of rejection, to the hanging back, and inviting troubles and accidents. (The other local leaders offered no more apologies, thinking it’s someone else’s fault, not theirs.)

What is difficult about declaring early suspension of classes when the price is the safety and health of the students and teachers who are traveling? For example, if the weather turns hilarious and the southwest monsoon shifts and the sun rises, what will the education sector lose if blended learning takes place or is attempted to be done online via a learning management system?

Officials no longer think that floodwater levels are rising year after year in many areas in the provinces, especially in cities. Just patience. Resilience. So wrong is the sheer incompetence in the bureaucracy that is being tolerated. Another thing rising? Assistant professor of economics JC Punongbayan noted: “Nung 2020, wala pang P100 billion ang pang-flood control, and just around 1/5 of infra outlays. Pero pagdating ng 2025, nearly P350 billion na, and 1/3 of infra outlays. Marcos removed P16.7B in flood control projects for this year, but that’s just 5% of the budget that was retained for flood control.”

How good are we in placing people in important positions of service? Every day of the semester and the academic year is crucial. For example, if 13.5 weeks per term are supposed to be spent on teaching and learning days, it should be filled if the allotted time is not used properly. But it seems that those who sit are incompetent, and they are the burdens because they are paid by the pockets of the citizens who pay more and more taxes, with middle-class, paycheck-to-paycheck workers on the losing side.

It was better in Dr. Nilo Rosas’ time in the late 1980s and 1990s. When parents would turn on the radio at dawn, there’s almost always a declared suspension of classes. Now that there are more than a few media of communication, when millions of mobile phones are sold easily—parents and maturing college students are even more wary of proper and timely official announcements of class suspension and/or shifting to blended learning.

Marcos’ 4th SONA and education

Not minding what VP Sara Duterte abhors to hear as this former DepEd secretary has said that she is not attending the President’s state-of-the-nation address on Monday, we would like to hear BBM’s concrete plans to improve the plight of students and teachers vis-à-vis the 165,000-classroom shortage, among other EDCOM II-identified problems and solutions.

Secretary Sonny Angara noted that the education department faces an increasing cost of constructing classrooms while the population keeps growing. He never categorically denied that their previously allocated funds were insufficient and never said that they were trying their best to push Congress and the executive branch to pass and go for a General Appropriations Act that institutes the much needed and most obvious reform relative to truthfully and profoundly, rather than mildly, obtaining the highest budgetary allocations for the education sector as enshrined in the 1987 Constitution.

Section 5, paragraphs 4 and 5 read: “The State shall enhance the right of teachers to professional advancement. Non-teaching academic and non-academic personnel shall enjoy the protection of the State. and “(It) shall assign the highest budgetary priority to education and ensure that teaching will attract and retain its rightful share of the best available talents through adequate remuneration and other means of job satisfaction and fulfillment.” (Art. XIV, Constitution)

We continue paying the wrong people the wrong amount. We keep rewarding the Senate show’s Robinhood and many more politicians, instead of professors and teachers whose sense of resilience, high qualifications, and constant upgrades of the noblest of all professions, even community extension work, matter more to the Filipino nation in general and the young minds in particular.

We will listen to Marcos’ SONA and the education accomplishments of his administration, but we will take note of what needs to be done, what daydreaming is occurring, and what concrete actions to maintain.

Project NOAH

The UN award-winning Project NOAH (Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazard) envisions “a disaster-free Philippines with communities that are empowered with open access to accurate, reliable, relevant, and timely hazard and risk information.” Its eight major components include distribution of hydrometeorological devices in hard-hit areas; disaster risk exposure assessment for mitigation–light detection and ranging; enhancement of geohazards mapping; coastal hazards and storm surge assessment and mitigation; flood information network; local development of Doppler radar systems; landslide sensors development; and weather hazard information projects.

This key disaster risk reduction and management program is now managed by the University of the Philippines. The Duterte administration defunded it, which was initially administered by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) from 2012 to 2017.

The DOST and DepEd officials are correct when they have begun utilizing artificial intelligence-powered methods and approaches, but we have to make sure projects like NOAH are thoughtfully supported and allowed, with researchers, scientists, trainees, and Executive Director Dr. Mahar Lagmay, to keep going without political intrusions.

The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) have extended their helping hand when they played a part in Digital Information for Monitoring and Evaluation (DIME). UP Vice President for Digital Transformation Peter Sy acknowledged that integrating disaster risk reduction strategies and ensuring that government projects—including but not limited to that of UP-NOAH—are strong enough when nature strikes. But when unscrupulousness from the public and private sectors strikes, we hope and pray that we have the sense of anticipation to weather their “storm.”

UN court: States may be violating law by ignoring climate change

THE HAGUE, Netherlands. The United Nations’ highest court has issued a landmark advisory opinion stating that countries may be in violation of international law if they fail to take action to protect the planet from climate change. The opinion, delivered Wednesday by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), also suggests that nations harmed by climate change could be entitled to reparations.

ICJ President Yuji Iwasawa described climate change as “an existential problem of planetary proportions that imperils all forms of life and the very health of our planet.” He added that a state’s failure to act on climate protection may amount to “an internationally wrongful act.”

The non-binding ruling was unanimously backed by all 15 judges of the court and marks a turning point in international climate law. The court recognized the right to a “clean, healthy, and sustainable environment” as a human right, opening the door for further legal actions between states and within domestic courts.

The case was brought forward by Vanuatu, a Pacific island nation severely affected by rising sea levels, and was supported by over 130 other countries. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres called the ruling “historic,” saying it is a victory for climate justice and youth activism.

Outside the court, climate advocates gathered in support of the decision. Mary Robinson, former U.N. human rights chief, said the ruling gives the world a “powerful new tool” to hold governments accountable for climate inaction.

The ICJ was asked by the U.N. General Assembly in 2023 to provide legal clarity on two questions: countries’ obligations under international law to prevent climate harm, and the consequences when failure to act results in environmental damage.

According to scientists, sea levels have risen by an average of 4.3 centimeters globally over the past decade, with Pacific island nations experiencing even higher rates. Since preindustrial times, the planet has warmed by 1.3 degrees Celsius, primarily due to fossil fuel emissions.

Ralph Regenvanu, Vanuatu’s climate change minister, called the opinion a “course correction” and said it exceeded expectations.

While the ruling is advisory and not enforceable, it could influence national courts and international negotiations, particularly ahead of the COP30 climate conference in Belém, Brazil. Legal experts say it may also be used by citizens to push their governments toward stronger climate action.

Despite opposition from major fossil fuel-producing nations like the United States and Russia, legal momentum appears to be shifting. Earlier this month, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights affirmed countries’ duty to protect and restore ecosystems. In 2019, the Netherlands’ Supreme Court ruled that protecting citizens from climate change is a government obligation under human rights law.

The ICJ noted that international law alone will not solve the climate crisis but stressed its role as a critical part of the global response. “A lasting solution will require the contribution of all fields of human knowledge to secure a future for ourselves and those who are yet to come,” Iwasawa said.

Trump briefed on name appearing in Epstein files, WSJ reports

WASHINGTON. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi informed former President Donald Trump in May that his name appeared in investigative files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

The revelation adds to political pressure on Trump, whose administration has faced criticism for backtracking on promises to release files related to Epstein. For years, some Trump supporters have promoted conspiracy theories surrounding Epstein’s client list and his 2019 prison death.

Following the Journal’s report, the White House issued a mixed response. While an initial statement dismissed the story as “fake news,” a White House official later clarified that the administration was not denying Trump’s name appears in the files. The official said Trump was already included in a batch of materials Bondi assembled in February for conservative influencers.

Trump, who socialized with Epstein in the 1990s and early 2000s, was listed in Epstein’s contact book and appears multiple times on flight logs for Epstein’s private jet. Epstein’s longtime pilot previously testified that Trump had flown on the aircraft, though Trump denies ever doing so.

Much of the material has already been released in connection with the criminal case against Epstein’s associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence after her conviction for child sex trafficking and other crimes.

Trump has not been accused of any wrongdoing related to Epstein and has stated that their friendship ended long before Epstein’s legal troubles began.

Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche released a statement saying, “Nothing in the files warranted further investigation or prosecution, and we have filed a motion in court to unseal the underlying grand jury transcripts. As part of our routine briefing, we made the President aware of the findings.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that Bondi and Blanche told Trump during a White House meeting that his name, along with those of many other prominent individuals, appeared in the files.

Epstein died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, following a prior 2008 conviction in Florida that resulted in a controversial 13-month sentence.

Under increasing political pressure, Trump recently directed the Justice Department to pursue the release of sealed grand jury transcripts related to Epstein. However, on Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Robin Rosenberg denied one such request, ruling it did not meet exceptions to grand jury secrecy rules.

Meanwhile, the House Oversight Committee’s subcommittee approved a subpoena seeking all Justice Department files related to Epstein, with bipartisan support; three Republicans joined five Democrats in the vote.

The Journal also reported last week that Trump allegedly sent Epstein a provocative birthday note in 2003. Trump has denied the letter’s authenticity and is suing the Journal and its owner Rupert Murdoch, calling the note fake.

Amid growing dissatisfaction from his political base, Trump has attempted to shift the narrative, including promoting unsubstantiated claims that former President Barack Obama interfered with his 2016 campaign. Obama’s office dismissed the allegations as “ridiculous.”

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll found that more than two-thirds of Americans believe the Trump administration is hiding information about Epstein’s clients.

French President Macron sues right-wing podcaster over allegation that First Lady is transgender

PARIS. French President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron have filed a defamation lawsuit in the United States against right-wing podcaster Candace Owens over her repeated claims that Brigitte Macron was born male.

In a complaint filed Wednesday in Delaware Superior Court, the Macrons accused Owens of launching a “campaign of global humiliation” to promote her podcast and expand her online following. The lawsuit focuses on Owens’ eight-part podcast titled Becoming Brigitte, which has garnered over 2.3 million views on YouTube, as well as related posts on X (formerly Twitter).

The Macrons said Owens falsely claimed that Brigitte, 72, was born as “Jean-Michel Trogneux,” the name of her older brother. The complaint further states that Owens “dissected their appearance, their marriage, their friends, their family, and their personal history, twisting it all into a grotesque narrative designed to inflame and degrade.” The result, they said, has been “relentless bullying on a worldwide scale.”

According to the filing, Owens’ claims included that Brigitte Macron stole another person’s identity, transitioned to female, and that she and the president are blood relatives engaged in incest. The Macrons said their relationship began when Brigitte was Emmanuel Macron’s teacher, but it “remained within the bounds of the law.”

In a podcast episode released the same day, Owens dismissed the lawsuit as “littered with factual inaccuracies” and described it as a “desperate public relations strategy” intended to smear her. She also claimed she was unaware that the lawsuit was forthcoming, despite legal communications between both parties dating back to January.

A spokesperson for Owens framed the lawsuit as an attack on press freedom, saying, “This is a foreign government attacking the First Amendment rights of an American independent journalist.” The spokesperson added that Brigitte Macron had declined several interview requests from Owens.

In a joint statement issued through their lawyers, the Macrons said they had made three formal requests for Owens to retract her statements before pursuing legal action. “Ms. Owens’s campaign of defamation was plainly designed to harass and cause pain to us and our families and to garner attention and notoriety,” they said. “We gave her every opportunity to back away from these claims, but she refused.”

Defamation lawsuits filed by heads of state are rare. However, former U.S. President Donald Trump has also used the courts in recent years, including a $10 billion lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal and a $15 million settlement with ABC over misreporting of a civil case verdict.

To win a defamation case in the United States, public figures must prove “actual malice” that the defendant knowingly spread false information or acted with reckless disregard for the truth.

Rumors about Brigitte Macron’s gender began circulating online in 2021 and have since been discussed on high-profile podcasts hosted by Tucker Carlson and Joe Rogan. In September, Brigitte won a defamation case in a French court against two women involved in spreading similar rumors, but that ruling was overturned by an appeals court. She has since appealed the decision to France’s highest court.

The U.S. case is listed as Macron et al. v.

Sa inihaing House Bill No. 2215 na may pamagat na “An Act Declaring Tax-Free All Interest Earned From Local Currency Bank Deposits and Qualified Investments in Long-Term Instruments Derived From Sources Within the Philippines, Except Interest Income on Foreign Currency Deposits, Amending for Such Purpose Section 24 of Republic Act No. 12214, Otherwise Known As the Capital Markets Efficiency Promotion Act,” hindi na papatawan ng buwis ang interes na kinikita mula sa mga deposito sa bangko at kwalipikadong long-term investments na nasa lokal na pera.

No. 8424 o mas kilala bilang Tax Reform Act of 1997.
