575 rescued after Indonesian ferry fire, 2 still missing

0

MANADO, Indonesia. Rescuers said on Monday that 575 people have been saved from a ferry that caught fire off North Sulawesi province in Indonesia, significantly more than earlier reported. At least three people died, while two others remain missing.

The KM Barcelona V-A was en route from Melonguane to Manado on Sunday when the fire broke out around midday. Initial reports cited five dead and 280 rescued, based on the ferry’s manifest. However, authorities later revised the figures, stating that more people were on board than recorded and that the death toll had been updated to three.

Indonesian Navy First Adm. Franky Pasuna Sihombing said it is common for actual passenger numbers to differ from official records, often due to overcrowding. These discrepancies complicate search and rescue operations.

The rescue involved a coast guard ship, six rescue vessels, several inflatable boats, and local fishermen. Many passengers were pulled from the sea, including a two-month-old baby who had inhaled seawater and is now in stable condition at a hospital.

The KM Barcelona V-A had a listed capacity of 600 passengers. According to the manifest, it carried only 280 passengers and 15 crew, but rescue teams believe the ferry was overcrowded.

Indonesia, an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, relies heavily on ferries for transportation. However, poor enforcement of safety regulations has led to frequent maritime accidents.

On July 14, a speedboat carrying 18 people capsized during a storm, though all were rescued. Earlier this month, a ferry near Bali sank, killing at least 19 people and leaving 16 missing. That incident prompted a two-week search involving over 600 personnel, multiple navy ships, boats, divers, and a helicopter.

Trump releases over 240,000 pages of Martin Luther King assassination files

WASHINGTON. The United States Justice Department has released more than 240,000 pages of documents related to the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., shedding new light on the extensive surveillance campaign carried out by the FBI during the civil rights era. The files, which include FBI records, are now publicly accessible via the website of the U.S. National Archives, with more documents expected to follow.

Dr. King, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and a global symbol of nonviolent resistance, was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. His death marked a turning point in U.S. history, triggering nationwide unrest in a year already marred by anti-Vietnam War protests and the assassination of U.S. presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy.

The newly released records confirm longstanding accounts that the FBI conducted extensive surveillance on King during the 1950s and 1960s, including wiretapping his phones and attempting to discredit him by falsely linking him to communism during the Cold War. In recent years, the FBI has acknowledged these actions as abuses of power and violations of civil liberties.

The document release follows a directive by former President Donald Trump, who had pledged during his campaign to increase transparency regarding historic political assassinations. Earlier in his term, his administration had already released files related to the deaths of Robert F. Kennedy and President John F. Kennedy.

In response to the release, the King family issued a statement urging the public to approach the documents with “empathy, restraint, and respect for our family’s continuing grief.” They also condemned any misuse of the files.

“During our father’s lifetime, he was relentlessly targeted by an invasive, predatory, and deeply disturbing disinformation and surveillance campaign orchestrated by J. Edgar Hoover through the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” said King’s children, Martin Luther King III, 67, and Bernice King, 62.

While James Earl Ray, a known segregationist, confessed to King’s assassination, he later recanted, and many questions have long surrounded his conviction. Ray died in prison in 1998. In 1999, the King family filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Tennessee, resulting in a jury verdict that found King was the victim of a conspiracy involving Loyd Jowers, a former Memphis police officer, and unidentified co-conspirators, including government agencies. The family maintains that Ray was not the shooter but was instead framed.

Jowers publicly claimed involvement in the plot during a 1993 television interview, but a 2023 Justice Department report has since cast doubt on his testimony.

As calls for justice, truth, and historical transparency continue globally, the King’s family hopes the revelations serve not only as a window into past injustices but also as a renewed call for unity, compassion, and equality.

Israeli troops enter central Gaza City, intensify pressure on Hamas

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip. Israeli forces on Monday pushed into Deir al-Balah, the only major city in central Gaza that had largely been spared from ground operations during the 21-month war. The move, which came after evacuation orders were issued, appears to be part of a broader strategy to divide the territory through military corridors and intensify pressure on Hamas to release hostages.

The Israeli incursion prompted alarm from the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, which said it was “shocked and alarmed,” warning that “the people of Israel will not forgive anyone who knowingly endangered the hostages.” Israel maintains that territorial control is essential to securing hostage releases. Around 50 hostages remain in Gaza, fewer than half of whom are believed to be alive, according to Israeli sources.

Associated Press reporters observed explosions and smoke in areas that had been recently evacuated. A local resident said Israeli pamphlets were dropped at dawn, instructing civilians to leave. Within hours, tanks entered the zone, flattening structures with bulldozers.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that Israeli troops raided its main staff residence in Deir al-Balah, forcing women and children to evacuate on foot. Male staff were reportedly handcuffed, stripped, and interrogated at gunpoint. Two staff members and two family members were detained, with three later released.

WHO also said its main warehouse in the area was damaged by an explosion and fire, disrupting aid operations. Meanwhile, the U.N. confirmed that two of its guesthouses were damaged by shrapnel during reported Israeli airstrikes.

The military did not confirm whether it had ordered the evacuation of aid agencies but said it maintains regular contact with humanitarian groups and helps facilitate relocations when necessary.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians have sought refuge in Deir al-Balah amid repeated displacement across the enclave. According to the U.N., over 87% of Gaza is now either under evacuation orders or designated as Israeli military zones, leaving 2.1 million people confined to just 12% of the territory, where essential services have collapsed.

On the southern front, the Israeli military reported that one soldier was killed and an officer seriously wounded during combat operations.

Meanwhile, the World Food Program (WFP) accused Israeli forces of opening fire on a crowd seeking aid in northern Gaza over the weekend. The WFP said “countless lives” were lost when Israeli tanks and snipers fired at a convoy area. A photojournalist with the AP counted 51 bodies at two hospitals, while Gaza’s Health Ministry reported at least 80 deaths. The Israeli military said it had fired warning shots to address an “immediate threat” and questioned the reported death toll.

The incident is the latest in a series of deadly confrontations involving aid seekers. Hundreds have been killed in recent weeks while attempting to access food and supplies from both U.N. and Israeli-supported aid sites.

The Gaza Health Ministry, operated by the Hamas-run government, estimates that over 59,000 Palestinians have died since the conflict began. While the figures do not differentiate between militants and civilians, the ministry states that more than half of the fatalities are women and children. International organizations, including the U.N., continue to use the ministry’s data as the most reliable source of casualty information.

In a sign of growing global discontent, the United Kingdom, France, and 23 other Western-aligned countries issued a joint statement demanding an immediate end to the war in Gaza and the release of remaining hostages. They also condemned Israel’s ongoing restrictions on humanitarian aid.

27 dead after tourist boat capsizes in Vietnam’s Halong Bay

HANOI, Vietnam. At least 27 people, including eight children, were killed after a tourist boat capsized in Halong Bay on Saturday amid stormy weather conditions brought by Tropical Storm Wipha, state media reported.

The vessel, carrying 53 people, overturned around 2 p.m. local time (0700 GMT) as the storm approached Vietnam from the South China Sea. Authorities said strong winds, heavy rains, and lightning battered the area at the time of the incident.

According to the state-run Vietnam News Agency, rescue teams recovered 27 bodies and found 11 survivors. The remaining passengers are still being accounted for.

Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located about 200 kilometers northeast of Hanoi, is a major tourist destination known for its scenic limestone islands and popular boat tours.

Storm Wipha is the third typhoon to hit the South China Sea this year. It is expected to make landfall along Vietnam’s northern coast early next week.

The storm also disrupted air travel. Noi Bai International Airport reported that nine incoming flights were diverted to other airports, while three outbound flights were temporarily grounded on Saturday.

Microsoft warns of active cyberattacks on SharePoint servers used by governments, businesses

Microsoft has issued an urgent security alert regarding “active attacks” targeting SharePoint server software used by government agencies and private businesses to share documents internally. The tech giant is urging affected customers to apply recommended security updates immediately.

The FBI confirmed on Sunday that it is aware of the attacks and is working closely with federal and private-sector partners, though it did not release further details.

In a security advisory issued Saturday, Microsoft clarified that the vulnerabilities apply specifically to on-premises SharePoint servers. SharePoint Online, the cloud-based version included in Microsoft 365, is not affected.

According to The Washington Post, which first reported the incident, unidentified actors exploited a previously unknown flaw—known as a “zero-day” vulnerability—to launch attacks targeting U.S. and international agencies and organizations. Cybersecurity experts say tens of thousands of servers could be at risk.

Microsoft stated that the vulnerability “allows an authorized attacker to perform spoofing over a network,” potentially enabling the attacker to impersonate trusted users or systems. Spoofing attacks can be used to manipulate systems, steal data, or spread malware under the guise of legitimate entities.

The company has released a security update for the SharePoint Subscription Edition and strongly advises customers to implement it immediately. Microsoft is also developing security patches for SharePoint 2016 and 2019 versions.

In the meantime, customers who are unable to activate the recommended malware protection tools are advised to temporarily disconnect affected servers from the internet until patches become available.

Microsoft has not yet responded to media requests for further comment.

Japan’s ruling coalition loses upper house control, increasing pressure on PM Ishiba

TOKYO. Japan’s ruling coalition has lost control of the upper house in Sunday’s election, according to public broadcaster NHK, delivering another blow to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba as he faces mounting domestic unrest and a looming trade deadline with the United States.

While the upper house election does not directly determine the fate of Ishiba’s administration, the result adds to the political pressure already bearing down on the prime minister, who lost control of the more powerful lower house in October.

NHK reported early Monday that Ishiba’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its coalition partner Komeito are expected to fall short of the 50-seat threshold required to control the 248-seat upper chamber, with only six races left to be decided. Half the chamber’s seats were contested in the election.

This latest electoral setback follows the coalition’s worst performance in 15 years during the October lower house vote. That result left Ishiba’s government exposed to no-confidence motions and internal party calls for leadership change.

Speaking to NHK after the release of exit polls, Ishiba said he “solemnly” accepted the “harsh result.” In a separate interview with TV Tokyo, he emphasized the need to stay focused on critical trade talks with the United States, saying, “We are engaged in extremely critical tariff negotiations… we must never ruin these negotiations. It is only natural to devote our complete dedication and energy to realizing our national interests.”

When asked if he planned to remain as prime minister and LDP leader, Ishiba responded, “That’s right.”

Japan, the world’s fourth-largest economy, faces an August 1 deadline to reach a trade agreement with the U.S., or risk facing punitive tariffs in its largest export market.

The opposition Constitutional Democratic Party is set to finish second, vote tallies show. Meanwhile, the far-right Sanseito party, which first gained traction through YouTube and social media during the COVID-19 pandemic, is poised to make significant gains. Riding on its “Japanese First” campaign and anti-immigration rhetoric, the party is expected to win at least 13 new seats, in addition to one it already held.

Opposition parties calling for tax cuts and increased welfare spending resonated with voters amid rising living costs, particularly the soaring price of rice. Analysts say the LDP’s opposition to reducing the consumption tax placed it at odds with the electorate.

“The LDP was largely playing defence in this election, being on the wrong side of a key voter issue,” said David Boling, a director at consulting firm Eurasia Group. “Polls show that most households want a cut to the consumption tax to address inflation, something that the LDP opposes. Opposition parties seized on it and hammered that message home.”

The LDP has promoted fiscal restraint to avoid spooking Japan’s government bond market, already wary due to the country’s massive national debt. Analysts warn that any concessions the ruling party makes to win opposition support may lead to increased government spending and financial market instability.

“The ruling party will have to compromise in order to gain the cooperation of the opposition, and the budget will continue to expand,” said Yu Uchiyama, a politics professor at the University of Tokyo. “Overseas investors’ evaluation of the Japan economy will also be quite harsh.”

Sanseito, which gained notoriety for spreading conspiracy theories and anti-vaccine rhetoric during the pandemic, has increasingly brought its anti-immigration stance into the political mainstream. The party’s surge has drawn comparisons to far-right groups like Germany’s AfD and the UK’s Reform Party.

“I am attending graduate school but there are no Japanese around me. All of them are foreigners,” said 25-year-old Yu Nagai, who voted for Sanseito in Tokyo’s Shinjuku ward. “When I look at the way compensation and money are spent on foreigners, I think that Japanese people are a bit disrespected.”

Despite a record 3.8 million foreign-born residents in Japan last year, they still comprise just 3% of the population, a far smaller proportion than in Western countries. However, the rise in visible foreign presence, driven in part by tourism, is reshaping Japan’s political conversation.

Trump signs stablecoin regulation law, marking major shift in U.S. crypto policy

WASHINGTON, D.C. President Donald Trump on Friday signed into law new regulations for stablecoins, marking a significant milestone for the cryptocurrency industry as it gains political traction and mainstream legitimacy.

The new law, titled the GENIUS Act or “Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins,” establishes the first federal standards and consumer protections for stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency typically pegged to assets like the U.S. dollar to minimize price volatility. The legislation passed both the House and Senate with broad bipartisan support.

The law aims to strengthen public trust in digital assets and signals a shift in Washington’s approach to crypto. The industry, which has grown into a powerful lobbying force, played a significant role in Trump’s 2024 election victory through major campaign donations and influence.

“For years you were mocked and dismissed and counted out,” Trump told crypto executives during a White House signing ceremony attended by around 200 people, including top Republican lawmakers. “This signing is a massive validation of your hard work and your pioneering spirit.”

Trump, once a skeptic of cryptocurrency, has become one of its most vocal political champions. He praised industry leaders for earning “respect in such a short period of time” and described crypto as beneficial for the dollar and the U.S. economy. “That’s why I backed you at an early stage,” he said.

In a candid moment, Trump acknowledged the political motivations behind his support: “And I also did it for the votes,” he said, drawing laughter from the crowd.

The president also joked that the GENIUS Act was named after him. Under the new law, members of Congress and their families are prohibited from profiting off stablecoins. However, the restriction does not apply to the president and his family.

The Trump family reportedly holds a major stake in World Liberty Financial, a crypto venture that launched its own stablecoin earlier this year. The project received early investment from a fund based in the United Arab Emirates.

Meanwhile, the House passed two additional crypto-related bills on Thursday. One would create a new regulatory framework for digital assets, while the other seeks to block the Federal Reserve from launching its own central bank digital currency. Both bills now await Senate consideration.

The stablecoin market continues to grow rapidly. Circle, the U.S. issuer of the popular USDC stablecoin, recently debuted on the New York Stock Exchange and saw a surge in value amid heightened investor interest. Stablecoin issuers typically earn revenue by collecting interest from the reserves backing their digital tokens.
