Trump slams Putin as ‘absolutely crazy’, considers new sanctions on Russian

WASHINGTON. U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday described Russian President Vladimir Putin as having “gone crazy” following Russia’s massive aerial assault on Ukraine, while also signaling he may push for new sanctions on Moscow if the attacks continue.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump reacted to what Ukrainian authorities called one of the most intense bombardments of the war, with over 900 drones and missiles launched by Russia across three consecutive nights.

“Something has happened to him (Putin). He has gone absolutely CRAZY!” Trump wrote. “I’ve always said that he wants ALL of Ukraine, not just a piece of it, and maybe that’s proving to be right, but if he does, it will lead to the downfall of Russia!”

Despite the sharp rebuke of Putin, Trump also criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, saying, “He is doing his Country no favours by talking the way he does. Everything out of his mouth causes problems, I don’t like it, and it better stop.”

At a press conference in New Jersey, Trump added, “I don’t know what’s wrong with him (Putin). What the hell happened to him? Right? He’s killing a lot of people. I’m not happy about that.”

The Kremlin responded to Trump’s comments with restraint. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the remark was likely a result of “emotional overload” and thanked the American public and Trump for prior support in launching peace initiatives.

Meanwhile, Zelenskiy, in his nightly address, condemned the latest Russian attacks, describing them as a deliberate political decision by Putin to prolong the war and cause destruction. “There is no military sense in this, but it is an obvious political choice, a choice by Putin, a choice by Russia — a choice to continue the war and destroy lives,” Zelenskiy said.

He emphasized that Russia deserved “full-scale pressure” and renewed calls for increased efforts to restrict Moscow’s military capabilities.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia’s most recent strikes targeted five areas, including the Khmelnytskyi region, where seven cruise missiles and dozens of drones damaged industrial sites and residential buildings. A 14-year-old boy was reportedly injured in Odesa, and the Starokostiantyniv air base was struck, according to the Russian Defence Ministry.

Ukraine also continued launching drone attacks into Russia, briefly shutting down Moscow airports.

The war, now in its third year, shows no signs of de-escalation, with both sides engaging in intense combat, particularly in the eastern front. Despite international efforts, including those by European leaders and Trump, to encourage peace talks, meaningful progress remains elusive.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed hope that Trump’s increasingly vocal opposition to Putin might translate into stronger U.S. sanctions that could deter further aggression.

While Russia claims its ongoing campaign is a “special military operation” to protect against NATO expansion, Ukraine and its allies describe it as a full-scale and unprovoked invasion.

Van plows into crowd of Liverpool fans, injuring dozens

LIVERPOOL, England. A celebration turned into chaos on Monday when a 53-year-old British man drove a gray minivan into a crowd of jubilant Liverpool football fans, injuring more than 45 people who had gathered to mark the team’s Premier League championship win.

According to police, the driver acted alone and the incident is not being treated as an act of terrorism. The man was arrested at the scene and is currently in custody. Authorities have identified him as white, in a move believed to prevent online speculation and the spread of misinformation.

Emergency services rushed to the site and transported 27 people to various hospitals, including two with serious injuries. Dave Kitchin of North West Ambulance Service treated twenty more for minor wounds on-site. Among the injured were at least four children. Firefighters had to lift the van to rescue four individuals, including a child, who were trapped underneath. A paramedic on a bicycle was struck but escaped injury.

“It has cast a very dark shadow over what had been a joyous day for the city,” said City Council leader Liam Robinson during a late-night press briefing.

The tragedy occurred as the celebratory parade was winding down. Witnesses said the minivan suddenly veered onto the parade route, crashing into fans dressed in red Liverpool scarves and jerseys. One video shared on social media showed a man being thrown into the air upon impact, as the van continued to push through the crowd before coming to a halt.

Harry Rashid, a witness who was present with his wife and two young daughters, described the horrifying scene. “It was extremely fast,” he said. “Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people being knocked off the bonnet of a car.” He added that after an initial pause, the driver accelerated again and ran over more people. “It was horrible. And you could hear the bumps as he was going over the people.”

Rashid said the attack appeared deliberate. “My daughter started screaming, and there were people on the ground. They were just innocent people, just fans going to enjoy the parade.”

Peter Jones, who traveled from the Isle of Man for the event, said he witnessed people chasing the vehicle and trying to stop it. “We heard a frantic beeping ahead, a car flew past me and my mate, people were chasing it and trying to stop him, windows smashed at the back,” he said. “He then drove into people, police and medics ran past us, and people were being treated on the side of the road.”

Police are continuing an extensive investigation into the incident and have asked the public to refrain from sharing graphic content online or speculating about the motives behind the crash.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack, calling the scenes “appalling” and praised the emergency responders. “Everyone, especially children, should be able to celebrate their heroes without this horror,” Starmer said. “Liverpool stands together and the whole country stands with Liverpool.”

Liverpool FC expressed its condolences in a short statement, saying its thoughts and prayers were with those affected. The Premier League also issued a statement expressing shock over the incident.

This is not the first time tragedy has struck Liverpool fans. The city still remembers the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, in which 97 fans lost their lives due to a stadium crush, an event long mired in controversy and a police cover-up. Fans were also denied a proper celebration when Liverpool last won the title in 2020, due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Despite rainy weather, Monday’s parade drew hundreds of thousands of supporters who lined the streets along the 10-mile route. The team, aboard two open-top buses emblazoned with “Ours Again,” was greeted by flares, flags, and cheers, a moment of triumph that, tragically, ended in horror.

The tragedy occurred as the celebratory parade was winding down. Witnesses said the minivan suddenly veered onto the parade route, crashing into fans dressed in red Liverpool scarves and jerseys.

Col.

Victoria to ban machete sales after gang clash at Melbourne mall

MELBOURNE, Australia. The state of Victoria is set to ban the sale and possession of machetes beginning Wednesday, following a violent gang fight in a Melbourne shopping mall that left a young man seriously injured.

Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan announced the new measures on Monday, just one day after a clash involving eight machete-wielding individuals broke out in a suburban shopping center. A 20-year-old man sustained serious injuries during the incident, and police have since arrested and charged four suspects.

“I will introduce as many laws as needed to get these dangerous knives off the streets,” Allan said during a press conference. “We will be bringing in place a ban on the sale of machetes here in Victoria, and this ban will be in place from midday on Wednesday. Under consumer powers, Victoria will be banning machetes from being sold anywhere in the state.”

The prohibition will apply to all machetes, broadly defined as knives with blades longer than 20 centimeters (almost 8 inches), although kitchen knives will not be included in the ban.

Victoria is currently the only Australian state or territory planning such a comprehensive restriction on machetes. In addition to the sales ban, the possession of machetes will also become illegal starting September 1, with limited exceptions. Violators could face up to two years in prison and fines exceeding 47,000 Australian dollars (approximately $30,700 USD).

Authorities have also announced a three-month amnesty period to allow residents to safely surrender machetes at police stations or designated drop-off bins without facing penalties.

The move follows similar legislation in England and Wales, where possession of machetes and certain other bladed weapons was banned in September 2023.

MAYNILA.

Excellent, very qualified, very dynamic, good track record,” pahayag ni Remulla sa isang ambush interview nitong Lunes.

“Ang nangyayari kasi sa atin, a tenure of a chief PNP will only last one year, a little more than one year. Kailangan natin merong continuing vision na may buy-in ng lahat ng PNP as the years go by,” aniya.

Dagdag pa niya, “Ngayon kasi paiba-iba. Every year iba ang directive, vision, mission statement. My goal is that isa na lang. No matter who the Chief PNP is.”

  • Lieutenant General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., deputy chief for administration ng PNP;
  • Lieutenant General Robert Rodriguez, deputy chief for operations ng PNP;
  • Lieutenant General Edgar Alan Okubo, chief ng directorial staff ng PNP;
  • Police Major General Nicolas Torre III, chief ng Criminal Investigation and Detection Group; at

“To everyone expecting to see me at Epic tonight, I won’t be able to make it. Got caught in a really unfortunate situation last night and need time to recover, both physically and mentally appreciate all your understanding and support. See you soon.”

“It’s unfortunate that my son Julian and his cousin Jefferelly Vitug had their vacation in Boracay marred by an act of violence. Early Saturday, they were assaulted by three young men.”

Kasalukuyan namang nagpapagaling ang dalawa sa ospital.

Ayon kay Lt. Col.

“I Am Roman”: Pope Leo XIV officially assumes role as bishop of Rome

ROME. In a ceremony marking the formal beginning of his pastoral mission in the Eternal City, Pope Leo XIV declared “I am Roman!” on Sunday as he completed the rites to become the bishop of Rome, one of the many titles he assumed following his May 8 election as pope.

The first American pontiff presided over an evening Mass at the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, the official cathedral of Rome and seat of its diocese. The liturgy was attended by Roman clergy and faithful, signifying the new pope’s formal assumption of leadership over the diocese.

In his homily, Pope Leo XIV emphasized a collaborative and listening approach to his ministry:
“I want to listen to you in order to learn, understand, and decide things together.”

While popes are responsible for the 1.4-billion-member Roman Catholic Church, they traditionally appoint a vicar general to oversee the day-to-day affairs of the Diocese of Rome.

Sunday’s event follows Pope Leo’s recent visit to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, which included a stop at St. Mary Major. St. Mary Major is part of the four major papal basilicas in Rome, which also includes St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

Earlier in the day, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri welcomed Pope Leo XIV at the steps of City Hall. He noted the significance of the pontiff’s election during a Holy Year, a special jubilee celebrated every 25 years that draws millions of pilgrims to the city. Rome has undergone major infrastructure upgrades to accommodate the expected 30 million visitors in 2025.

During his remarks, Pope Leo XIV expressed deep commitment to the city and its people:
“I feel the serious but passionate responsibility to serve all Romans during the Holy Year and beyond.”

Wearing his red papal cape and brocaded stole, the Augustinian pope recalled the words he spoke on the night of his election from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, quoting St. Augustine:
“With you I am Christian, and for you, bishop.”

The ceremony marked not only a formality but a heartfelt beginning to Pope Leo XIV’s pastoral role in the heart of Catholicism.

Israeli strikes kill 30 in Gaza, including journalist and rescue official

CAIRO. At least 30 Palestinians were killed in separate Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip on Sunday, including a senior official of the territory’s civil emergency service and a local journalist, according to health authorities in Gaza.

Medical sources said the attacks occurred in multiple areas, Khan Younis in the south, Jabalia in the north, and Nuseirat in central Gaza, marking another deadly day in the ongoing Israeli military campaign.

Among those killed was Hassan Majdi Abu Warda, a local journalist in Jabalia, along with several members of his family, after an airstrike struck his home early Sunday. Abu Warda’s death brings the number of journalists killed in Gaza since October 2023 to 220, according to the Hamas-run Gaza government media office.

In another airstrike in Nuseirat, Ashraf Abu Nar, a senior official in the territory’s civil emergency services, and his wife were killed in their residence, medics reported.

The Israeli military did not comment on the specific airstrikes in its latest public statement, but confirmed that its Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir visited troops stationed in Khan Younis on Sunday. Addressing soldiers, Zamir stated: “This is not an endless war” and claimed that Hamas had lost most of its assets, including its command and control systems.
“We will deploy every tool at our disposal to bring the hostages home, dismantle Hamas and dismantle its rule,” he added.

Later that day, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed in a statement that two of its staff members — Ibrahim Eid and Ahmad Abu Hilal, were killed in a strike on a house in Khan Younis on Saturday.

“Their killing points to the intolerable civilian death toll in Gaza. The ICRC reiterates its urgent call for a ceasefire and for the respect and protection of civilians, including medical, humanitarian relief, and civil defence personnel,” the organization stated.

In a separate statement, the Gaza media office said that Israeli forces were now in control of approximately 77% of the Gaza Strip, whether by ground operations or through evacuation orders and sustained bombardments that have forced residents from their homes.

Meanwhile, the armed wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for multiple attacks against Israeli forces using bombs and anti-tank rockets across various areas of Gaza.

On Friday, the Israeli military said it had conducted overnight strikes targeting 75 locations, including weapons storage sites and rocket launchers.

The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants launched a cross-border attack that killed 1,200 people, according to Israeli authorities, and abducted 251 hostages into Gaza. In response, Israel launched a large-scale air and ground assault on the coastal enclave.

According to Gaza’s health ministry, more than 53,900 Palestinians have since been killed, with widespread devastation across the region. Humanitarian organizations continue to report alarming levels of malnutrition and deteriorating health conditions among the civilian population.

Blood and urine markers may reveal hidden impact of ultraprocessed food intake, study finds

Molecules found in the blood and urine may offer a groundbreaking new way to measure just how much ultraprocessed food people consume, an advance that could reshape the way scientists study the link between diet and health, according to a new study published Tuesday in PLOS Medicine.

The research, led by Erikka Loftfield of the National Cancer Institute, is the first to identify specific biological markers in blood and urine that correlate with higher or lower intake of ultraprocessed foods, items that make up nearly 60% of the average American diet.

“It can potentially give us some clues as to what the underlying biology might be between an ultraprocessed food association and a health outcome,” Loftfield said.

Ultraprocessed foods (UPFs), such as sugary cereals, sodas, chips, frozen pizzas, and snack bars, are manufactured products often made with additives, preservatives, and artificial ingredients rarely found in home kitchens. Although these foods are omnipresent in the U.S. and other countries, studying their long-term health effects has proven difficult because accurately recording food intake remains a major challenge.

The limits of self-reporting

Traditionally, dietary studies rely on people recalling what they’ve eaten—an approach that is widely recognized as flawed.

“There’s a need for both a more objective measure and potentially also a more accurate measure,” Loftfield explained.

To build a more reliable method, Loftfield and her team analyzed data from over 1,000 older U.S. adults enrolled in an existing study of AARP members. More than 700 of those participants provided blood and urine samples along with detailed dietary recall data collected over a year.

Researchers identified hundreds of metabolites—byproducts of digestion and other bodily processes—that were linked to the amount of energy participants consumed from UPFs. From that analysis, they created a scoring system consisting of 28 blood markers and up to 33 urine markers that could reliably indicate the level of UPF consumption.

“We found this signature that was sort of predictive of this dietary pattern that’s high in ultraprocessed food and not just a specific food item here and there,” Loftfield said.

Some of the most consistent biomarkers included two amino acids and a carbohydrate that appeared in at least 60 of 100 test iterations. One marker even showed a possible connection between UPF-heavy diets and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Valid at the individual level

To test the accuracy of the tool, Loftfield applied it to data from a rigorously controlled 2019 National Institutes of Health (NIH) study in which 20 adult participants lived in a research facility for a month. Each person was given alternating two-week diets of ultraprocessed and unprocessed foods matched for calories, sugar, fat, fiber, and macronutrients, and allowed to eat as much as they wanted.

Loftfield’s team was able to distinguish when participants were consuming large amounts of UPFs based solely on their metabolite scores.

“The results suggested the markers were ‘valid at the individual level,’” Loftfield noted.

A promising future for nutrition science

Experts unaffiliated with the study have hailed the findings as a potential turning point in nutritional science.

“With more research, these metabolic signatures can begin to untangle the biologic pathways and harms of UPF and also differences in health effects of specific UPF food groups, processing methods and additives,” said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, director of the Food Is Medicine Institute at Tufts University.

Loftfield hopes the metabolite tool can be used in existing population studies where blood and urine samples are already collected, especially to explore links between UPF intake and diseases like cancer.

However, she also voiced concerns about declining funding for government-backed scientific research.

“There’s a lot of interest across the board—scientifically, public interest, political interest, in the question of: Does ultraprocessed food impact health and, if so, how?” Loftfield said. “How can we fund the studies that need to be done to answer these questions in a timely way?”

As ultraprocessed foods continue to dominate global diets, these findings could be the first step toward providing the scientific evidence necessary for public health policy and personal dietary choices grounded in biological precision.
