German cathedral show with chickens in diapers prompts apologies

BERLIN, Germany. A controversial performance at a Catholic cathedral in Paderborn earlier this month, which included raw chickens in diapers onstage, has led church and city leaders to apologize for “hurting religious feelings.”

The performance, titled “Westphalia Side Story,” took place on May 15 during celebrations marking the 1,250th anniversary of the Westphalia region. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Archbishop Udo Bentz of Paderborn were reportedly in the audience.

Videos of the performance showed one woman and two shirtless men singing “Fleisch ist Fleisch” (“Meat is meat”) while dancing with dead chickens in front of the cathedral’s altar. The scene spoofed the 1984 pop song “Live Is Life” by the Austrian band Opus.

The performance company BodyTalk explained that the scene was an excerpt from the upcoming “Westphalia Side Story,” which references “West Side Story” and will premiere in September as part of the region’s anniversary events. “It was not meant to be a spoof at all,” said BodyTalk cofounder Rolf Baumgart, adding that the performance aimed to reflect the region’s rural history and identity.

However, the show sparked backlash, including an online petition with more than 22,000 signatures demanding an apology and penance from Archbishop Bentz, as well as the reconsecration of the cathedral.

In a statement posted on the cathedral’s website, the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe and the church’s leadership said they were not aware of the full content of the show. They apologized for the “hurtful” performance and promised to vet future events more thoroughly. The cathedral also launched an internal review.

President Steinmeier’s office has not commented on the matter.

Terror attack rocks Boulder mall, several injured

BOULDER, Colo. Several people were injured, some reportedly set on fire, after an attack at a popular outdoor mall in Boulder, Colorado, on Sunday. Authorities have taken a man into custody, and the FBI described the incident as a “targeted terror attack.”

Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn told reporters that it was too early to speculate on the motive, saying, “It would be irresponsible for me to speculate on motive this early on.” Witnesses are currently being interviewed as part of the investigation.

The attack occurred at a well-known pedestrian mall frequented by tourists and college students. On the same day, demonstrators with the group Run For Their Lives had gathered at the mall to call for the release of hostages still held in Gaza. The group has chapters worldwide and regularly meets to raise awareness for hostage releases.

Law enforcement agencies across the U.S. are grappling with a rise in antisemitic violence, and just last week, a man was arrested for the fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy staffers, shouting “Free Palestine” during his arrest.

Chief Redfearn said injuries in Sunday’s attack ranged from serious to minor, with multiple blocks around the pedestrian mall evacuated. The atmosphere was tense, as police and a K9 unit searched the area for potential threats and urged people to stay away.

“Our agents and local law enforcement are on the scene already, and we will share updates as more information becomes available,” FBI Director Kash Patel posted on social media.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis issued a statement saying he was “closely monitoring” the situation and stressed that “hate-filled acts of any kind are unacceptable.”

EDSA rehab, ipinagpaliban ni Marcos

MAYNILA.

“And he has also listened to experts who have informed him na mas may epektibong paraan at bagong teknolohiya na puwede nating gawin nang mas mabilis,” ani Dizon.

Ang rehabilitasyon ng EDSA ay inaasahang tatagal hanggang 2027 o isang taon bago matapos ang termino ni Marcos kung ito ay ipagpapatuloy.

Dragon boats roar in Hong Kong’s waters for ancient festival

HONG KONG. Throngs of people gathered in southern Hong Kong on Saturday to witness the iconic dragon boat races, a highlight of the Dragon Boat Festival that dates back over 2,000 years.

Following the rhythmic beat of their drummers, crews paddled in unison, pushing their elaborately designed dragon boats toward the finish line. Spectators, both residents and tourists, lined the waterfront, cheering them on.

The festival, known as “Tuen Ng” in Cantonese, is deeply rooted in legend. The most famous story commemorates a patriotic official who, after falling from his leader’s favor and witnessing his kingdom’s decline, drowned himself. Villagers, desperate to recover his body, raced their boats to search for him and tossed rice dumplings into the water to deter fish from eating his remains.

These rice dumplings and the dragon boat races have since become central traditions of the festival, celebrated not just in Hong Kong but also in mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia. In Beijing, crowds gathered to watch races along the Grand Canal in Tongzhou.

In Hong Kong, a standard dragon boat holds 20 paddlers. According to government estimates, around 380,000 mainland Chinese tourists were expected to visit the city during the three-day holiday, a 16% increase in daily visitor numbers.

DOH mahigpit ang pagbabantay sa Mpox Clade 1b

MAYNILA.

Hamas seeks changes in Gaza truce plan, Witkoff rejects response

CAIRO. Hamas announced on Saturday it was seeking amendments to a U.S.-backed proposal for a temporary Gaza ceasefire, but U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff dismissed the group’s response as “totally unacceptable.” Hamas said it was willing to release 10 living hostages and the bodies of 18 dead in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Still, it reiterated demands for a permanent end to the war and Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza, conditions Israel has consistently rejected.

While Hamas described its response as “positive,” it did not specify what changes it wants to the plan, which calls for a 60-day truce and the exchange of 28 Israeli hostages for over 1,200 Palestinian prisoners. Israel, meanwhile, has agreed to the framework, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israel’s military confirmed it had killed Mohammad Sinwar, Hamas’ Gaza chief, on May 13, and said it would continue operations in Gaza. The military campaign has driven Gaza’s population into increasingly crowded areas, with the U.N. warning of famine risk despite resumed aid deliveries.

Hamas denies looting aid and says it has executed suspected looters, while Israel says Hamas steals supplies for its own use. Aid agencies report that dozens of WFP trucks carrying flour were hijacked and looted in Gaza on Saturday.

President Donald Trump has stated that he believes a ceasefire agreement is imminent, with his envoy urging Hamas to accept the framework proposal and initiate proximity talks this coming week.

DOH reports drop in Mpox cases in May 2025, total at 911 since 2024

MANILA. The Department of Health (DOH) announced Saturday that monkeypox (mpox) cases in the Philippines dipped in May 2025 compared to April, with the total number of cases reaching 911 since 2024.

DOH spokesperson Albert Domingo said that while the cumulative cases reached 911 since 2024, the agency focuses on monthly trends rather than the total number. “We detected less than 50 cases in May, while April had more than 50,” he explained in an interview on Super Radyo dzBB.

Domingo emphasized that the DOH monitors the epidemic curve to avoid creating the impression of a surge in cases based on total numbers. He added that reports of multiple cases in succession led to a misconception of an increase, but the data shows more cases in April than in May.

In September 2024, around 200 suspected and probable mpox cases were reported, but fewer than 20 were confirmed positive. Some cases initially reported as mpox were later identified as chickenpox.

Domingo also reassured the public that only the milder Clade II variant of mpox has been detected in the country, with no cases of the more transmissible Clade 1B variant so far. “We do not need to be alarmed because the variant here is Clade II,” he said.

DOH Secretary Ted Herbosa also clarified that some deaths recorded among mpox patients were not caused by mpox itself, but by complications from advanced HIV. “Sec. Herbosa is more concerned about the rising HIV cases, with 56 to 57 new cases daily,” Domingo noted.

He added that mpox is a self-resolving viral disease that usually heals within two to three weeks. Vulnerable individuals who died often had advanced HIV, with mpox present but not the cause of death.

Regarding preventive measures, Domingo said mpox is not airborne, and wearing face masks cannot prevent its transmission. “Mpox spreads through close skin-to-skin contact, so precautions should match the mode of transmission,” he said, encouraging local government units to coordinate with the DOH for appropriate preventive actions.

The DOH continues to monitor the situation closely as it urges the public to stay informed and follow recommended health protocols.

FAA orders investigation into SpaceX’s recent Starship mishap

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. The Federal Aviation Administration is demanding an accident investigation following SpaceX’s latest out-of-control Starship flight this week. Tuesday’s test flight from Texas lasted longer than the previous two failed demonstrations of the world’s largest and most powerful rocket, which previously ended in explosions over the Atlantic. The latest spacecraft traveled halfway around the world to the Indian Ocean before going into a spin and breaking apart.

The FAA reported Friday that no injuries or public damage were recorded. The first-stage booster, recycled from an earlier flight, also broke apart while descending over the Gulf of Mexico, but this was part of intentionally extreme testing approved by the FAA beforehand.

All debris from both parts of the 403-foot (123-meter) rocket fell within designated hazard zones, the FAA confirmed. The agency will oversee SpaceX’s investigation, which is required before another Starship launch can proceed.

CEO Elon Musk said he plans to accelerate the pace of Starship test flights, aiming ultimately to send the rockets to Mars. NASA requires Starship as the vehicle to land astronauts on the moon within the next few years.
