Filipinos mark Holy Week with intense acts of devotion

KALAYAAN, Laguna. Under the scorching sun, dozens of devout penitents walked the streets of Kalayaan town on Good Friday, whipping their bloodied backs with wooden whips in a controversial ritual meant to atone for sins and honor the sufferings of Jesus Christ.

The annual flagellation, witnessed by residents and tourists alike, remains a vivid display of devotion in the predominantly Catholic Philippines — even as the Catholic Church discourages the practice.

Among the penitents was 27-year-old Luis Bautista, who said, “I do this so I can experience the hardships of Christ and also pray for the safety of my family.”

Another participant, Jayve Lorenzo, has been joining the flagellation rites for nearly two decades. “Ginagawa ko ito bilang panata. Ipinagdadasal ko ang kalusugan at kapakanan ng pamilya ko,” said Lorenzo, whose vow is rooted in personal struggles and a deep desire for healing.

The ritual procession moved slowly through the town’s streets, the penitents pausing at stations to pray or take water breaks. Despite their physical wounds, some could be seen dancing while whipping their backs shortly after reciting prayers.

Along the way, residents showed support for the penitents. Baby Ragaza, a local resident, placed containers of boiled eggs and bottled water in front of her home for them to consume. “I am just happy to help and ease their hardships,” she said, adding that she performs this act in memory of her late husband and as a way to grow closer to God.

After completing their route, the penitents made their way to a small waterfall outside the town where they washed the blood off their backs.

In nearby Paete, a town known for its masterful wood carvings and strong religious traditions, residents held a grand procession on Holy Wednesday, parading life-size images of Christ and Catholic saints through its narrow streets. On Maundy Thursday, townspeople staged a passion play at the local plaza under the sweltering summer heat.

According to Rowell Ybanez, parish pastoral council moderator of Saint James the Apostle Parish, Paete’s Lenten practices have endured for centuries, drawing tourists year after year. “Paete is one of the most colorful towns in the Philippines because art and faith are intertwined in our town,” he said.

Across the Philippines, various Lenten traditions continue to be practiced with fervor — from passion plays to self-flagellation, and even crucifixions, where individuals are nailed to wooden crosses in a dramatic and controversial display of faith.

Despite differing views from religious authorities, many Filipinos remain deeply connected to these acts, believing them to be personal expressions of devotion and spiritual renewal during one of the holiest times of the Christian calendar.

Xi Jinping pledges regional solidarity amid economic shocks during Malaysia visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping has assured Southeast Asian countries of China’s unwavering support amid global economic uncertainties, promising to deepen regional partnerships and cooperation during his state visit to Malaysia on Wednesday.

“In the face of shocks to global order and economic globalization, China and Malaysia will stand with countries in the region to combat the undercurrents of geopolitical … confrontation, as well as the counter-currents of unilateralism and protectionism,” Xi said during a formal dinner with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. “Together we will safeguard the bright prospects of our Asian family.”

Xi’s visit to Malaysia is part of a broader Southeast Asia tour, which includes stops in Vietnam and Cambodia, and comes in the wake of newly announced U.S. tariffs by former President Donald Trump that have sent ripples through the global economy. Despite the timing, Xi’s trip, likely planned earlier, is seen as Beijing’s opportunity to reaffirm its role as a regional stabilizer and counterbalance to growing Western economic protectionism.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim welcomed Xi with strong praise for China’s global role, issuing a subtle rebuke to the U.S. approach to trade.

“What we are witnessing today is not an honest reckoning with the imperfections of globalization, but a retreat into economic tribalism. Market access is being weaponized,” Anwar said. “In these trying times, the world yearns for steadiness, reliability and a common purpose. We see this in China’s conduct.”

Xi reaffirmed China’s intention to expand market access for Malaysia and Vietnam and expressed hope for accelerating a free trade agreement between China and the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), according to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.

During his meeting with Malaysia’s king, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, Xi also emphasized future cooperation in green technology and artificial intelligence, as reported by the official Xinhua News Agency.

China and Malaysia signed several memoranda of understanding covering services and trade, further development of industrial parks in both countries, and increased agricultural exports to China. Malaysia continues to host multiple Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects, including the $11.2 billion East Coast Rail Link, which was a key topic in Xi’s discussion with the king.

China remains Malaysia’s largest trading partner and one of its top sources of foreign direct investment.

Xi began his tour with a state visit to Vietnam, where he met with Communist Party General Secretary To Lam, as well as the Vietnamese president and prime minister. The two nations signed a series of memoranda aimed at strengthening cooperation in supply chains, including a joint railway project. Xi also pledged increased access for Vietnamese agricultural goods to the Chinese market.

According to China’s Ministry of Commerce, the two sides signed a memorandum “to build a smooth, stable, and resilient industrial chain and supply chain…, and further deepen trade and investment cooperation” between their business sectors.

China’s Ministry of Defense also confirmed a deepening of defense cooperation with Vietnam, although no specific details were provided. Areas of agreement include political work, maritime security, joint exercises, and personnel training, all aimed at elevating military ties “to a new level.”

Xi’s regional charm offensive highlights China’s strategic effort to position itself as a steadfast ally of Southeast Asia in the face of economic turbulence and shifting global alliances.

‘Superstar’ Nora Aunor passes away at 71

Filipino film icon and National Artist Nora Aunor has died at the age of 71. Her son, actor Ian de Leon, confirmed her passing through an emotional announcement on Facebook on Wednesday, April 17.

“She was the heart of our family—a source of unconditional love, strength, and warmth. Her kindness, wisdom, and beautiful spirit touched everyone who knew her. She will be missed beyond words and remembered forever,” Ian wrote.

Details surrounding her death will be shared on Thursday, according to his post.

In another heartfelt message, Ian expressed his deep sorrow and love for his mother:

Her daughter, Matet de Leon, also paid tribute to her mother on Instagram, posting photos from her wedding.
“I love you, mommy,” she wrote simply, capturing the grief her family and fans felt.

Known to millions as the “Superstar,” Nora Aunor was named National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts in 2022. Her career spanned decades, marked by powerful performances in critically acclaimed films such as “Himala,” “Bona,” and “Minsa’y Isang Gamu-gamo.”

Among her final film appearances were “Mananambal,” alongside Bianca Umali, and “Pieta,” where she starred opposite Alfred Vargas. In 2023, she also appeared in the GMA Afternoon Prime series “Lilet Matias: Attorney-at-Law,” reuniting with Jo Berry, her co-star from the 2018 drama “Onanay.”

Beyond acting, Aunor was also beloved for her soulful singing voice. Her renditions of “Pearly Shells” and “Tiny Bubbles” became timeless classics in Filipino music history.

Nora Aunor married fellow actor Christopher de Leon in 1975. Although they eventually separated and had their marriage annulled in 1996, they shared five children: Ian, Lotlot, Matet, Kiko, and Kenneth.

The nation mourns the loss of a cultural icon whose legacy will forever be etched in the history of Philippine arts and entertainment.

Unity, harmony, partnership, love of country: Why they aren’t abstract ideas

(Speech delivered before the graduating class of Cuyab Integrated National High School, City of San Pedro, Laguna, 15 April 2025)

The graduating class, the school administration, the faculty, the political leadership, mga haligi at ilaw ng tahanan, isang maganda at mapagpalang hapon po sa ating lahat.

Nakikiisa ako, siyempre pa, sa temang “Henerasyon ng Pagkakaisa: Kaagapay sa Bagong Pilipinas (Generation of Unity: Partners for the New Philippines).

Angara’s Department is our Department, kaya nga “DepEd Tayo.” Secretary Angara said that the Department is committed to pursuing reforms. As quoted by the media, and I quote: “I have seen this commitment firsthand in my visits to schools across the country. I have met learners who wake up before dawn to walk kilometers to learn, teachers who go beyond their duty, and parents who sacrifice to provide their children with better opportunities. These realities push us to craft enduring reforms.” (Unquote.) That’s what Secretary Angara said.

Repormang pangmatagalan, aniya. Ano ba iyang EDCOM 2? It’s a high-level commission mandated to legislate frameworks and policies to address that crisis – the learning crisis.

EDCOM 2 led among others by Executive Director Karol Yee published the commission’s Year Two Report and Year One Report. In Year Two, the report was titled, “Fixing the Foundations: A Matter of National Survival.” Sa Wikang Filipino: Pag-aayos ng Mga Pundasyon: Isang Usapin ng Pambansang Kaligtasan. Ano po ang sinundan niyan? Heto po: “Miseducation: The failed system of Philippine education, EDCOM II year one report.”

Ang sabi nga ng Korte Suprema sa napakarami nilang desisyon: Do not feel too onion-skinned to criticisms which public officials must always accept. Tanggapin ang katotohanang ganoong kalala ang sitwasyon. Tanggapin na rin nating ang EDCOM ay nasa tamang pagtanggap ng tungkulin at iyon nga ay nasabi na natin kanina na sinabi nila that they are mandated to legislate frameworks and policies to address that crisis – the learning crisis.

Do not underestimate the power of declaration like the Apostle Paul did: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

(Unquote.)

Ang ekonomistang si Paul Samuelson ang nagsabing the ultimate goal of economics is to improve the living conditions of people, especially the poor.

Ibig sabihin, huwag tayong manatili sa ganitong kalagayan; instead of more of the same, more for His name. Not more of the same, but rather, we genuinely desire to have a decent, disciplined, structured fame. Uy, DDS yun. Decent, disciplined, structured greatness or fame.

Tuldok. Doing good. Period.

Public office is a public trust; at dagdag pa ng Konstitusyon: “Public officers and employees must, at all times, be accountable to the people, serve them with utmost responsibility, integrity, loyalty, and efficiency; act with patriotism and justice, and lead modest lives.” Diba, at all times accountable sila?

Gadget? Don’t get it! Gadget? Don’t get it! Ganoon.

Huwag kalimutan sa okasyon ngayong Abril na may tumayong pangalawang magulang. Si sir, si ma’am. Sila yung sinasabi ng isang attorney na, teacher pa at nurse pa, na ganito, well, tanong niya, sagot niya. Pero mapanghamon. Dahil makatotohanan, masarap pakinggan. Aniya:

“Why do Filipino teachers bother teaching?

“Because clearly, in the Philippines, they’re not doing it for the money.

“They’re not doing it for the recognition, either.

“And definitely not for the easy life — because teaching is anything but easy.

“They’re doing it because they believe.

“In their students.

“In the power of knowledge.

“In the dream of a better future, one learner at a time.

“But let’s be honest: teachers are some of the most underappreciated people in our country.

“They’re expected to be educators, counselors, second parents, content creators, tech experts, event organizers — all while being underpaid and often overworked.

“And yet, without teachers, there would be no lawyers.

“No doctors.

“No engineers.

“No nurses.

“No leaders.

“No change-makers.

“Every professional you admire today?

“A teacher once believed in them — guided them, challenged them, uplifted them.

“Teachers build the nation silently.

“But why are they treated as if their role is small?

“Why do they have to spend their own money on class supplies?

“Why do they have to work overtime, check papers at midnight, and still be cheerful the next morning — all for a salary that doesn’t match the magnitude of their impact?

“If this country really wants to grow, we need to stop treating education like an afterthought.

“We should be paying our teachers like the nation-builders they are.

“Because they are the foundation. The first spark. The lifeline of every dream.”

Hindi ko pinagsasawaan ang ituwid sila, paalalahanan sila at turuan to give credit where credit is due, ika nga.

Your challenge is to proficiently assist in achieving common goals and addressing national and even international challenges by fostering collaborative relationships deeply involving yourselves in the academe, public and private sectors, and civil society organizations.

Ending the learning crisis, sustaining development, and promoting social well-being would be the expected outcomes of your commitment to partner with people inside and outside of government.

All parties share emotional, spiritual, ethical, and even constitutional liability in the general sense of partnership. All parties bear personal responsibility for each other. There would come a time that you would need to rectify the wrongs committed in that partnership instead of living in those wrongs. Subsequently, you would need to reject evil compromises. You would need to maintain what is right and what is just.

Since you have known each other for years, please face your classmates, challenge yourselves, and tell this from the heart, “We should decide to mature early.” At that age, you can all be reasonably expected to have a high level of partnership for us to help build a prosperous, blessed Philippines. Just like the love you feel at your second home, Cuyab Integrated National High School, and the feeling of love that abounds every time you go back to your respective homes, this is real. The love. The partnership. The unity and harmony. They are not abstract ideas. Hindi puro drawing. You feel them, and you thank God for that reward.

Class 2025, mabuhay!

FDA approves trial using gene-edited pig livers to aid human liver failure patients

WASHINGTON, D.C. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a groundbreaking clinical trial that will test whether gene-edited pig livers can be used externally to filter the blood of patients suffering from acute liver failure much like dialysis for kidney patients.

The trial, spearheaded by Massachusetts-based biotechnology company eGenesis in collaboration with U.K. medical device firm OrganOx, represents a significant advance in the pursuit of xenotransplantation, the use of animal organs to support or replace human organ function.

Rather than implanting the pig liver, researchers will attach the genetically engineered organ externally to patients and pump their blood through it using OrganOx’s existing perfusion technology, which is currently used to preserve human donor livers. The goal is to determine whether the pig liver can temporarily support patients’ liver function, giving their own organs time to rest and potentially regenerate.

“There are an estimated 35,000 people in the U.S. hospitalized annually due to sudden liver failure,” said Mike Curtis, CEO of eGenesis. “The mortality rate can reach up to 50%, and many patients are either not eligible for a liver transplant or are unable to receive a donor organ in time.”

The trial, which is set to begin later this spring, will enroll up to 20 critically ill patients in intensive care units who are ineligible for liver transplantation. These patients will be connected to a system that circulates their blood through a pig liver, genetically modified to be more compatible with human biology.

In preliminary studies conducted using four deceased human bodies, the pig livers successfully supported several vital functions for two to three days. These encouraging results paved the way for the FDA to greenlight the upcoming live trial.

“The liver is the only human organ capable of regenerating itself,” Curtis noted. “We want to know if giving the liver a temporary break a few days of support could be enough to allow some patients to recover without needing a full transplant.”

This development marks another step forward in the evolving field of xenotransplantation. Other efforts by eGenesis and United Therapeutics have explored transplanting gene-edited pig kidneys into human patients as part of experimental life-saving treatments.

If successful, this new study could lead to a revolutionary support system for liver failure patients and a new chapter in bioengineered organ research.

Xi Jinping warns “there are no winners in a tariff war” as he begins Southeast Asia tour

HANOI, Vietnam. Chinese President Xi Jinping began his diplomatic tour of Southeast Asia on Monday by warning against the dangers of protectionism and presenting China as a stabilizing force in global trade, in contrast to the United States’ recent tariff decisions under former President Donald Trump.

“There are no winners in a trade war, or a tariff war,” Xi said in an editorial jointly published in Vietnamese and Chinese state media. “Our two countries should resolutely safeguard the multilateral trading system, stable global industrial and supply chains, and open and cooperative international environment.”

Xi’s remarks come as the U.S. maintains steep tariffs on Chinese imports, including a 145% duty rate, despite a recent pause on some tariffs. Trump, speaking from the Oval Office, accused China and Vietnam of plotting to undermine the U.S., saying the two countries were trying “to figure out how do we screw the United States of America.”

Strengthening China’s Ties in the Region

Upon arrival in Hanoi, Xi was received with high honors by Vietnamese President Luong Cuong. The ceremonial welcome included a drum performance by local students and flag-waving for both nations and their Communist parties, a display reflecting the significance of Xi’s two-day visit.

In a meeting with Vietnam’s Communist Party General Secretary To Lam, Xi emphasized the importance of regional cooperation: “In the face of turmoil and disruption in the current global context, China and Vietnam’s commitment to peaceful development, and deepening of friendship and cooperation has brought the world valuable stability and certainty.”

Xi also met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and the two sides signed several memorandums aimed at boosting cooperation on railway infrastructure, environmental protection, and supply chain resilience. According to Vietnamese state media Nhan Dan, both countries agreed to expedite an $8 billion cross-border railway project approved earlier this year.

Regional Strategy Amid U.S. Tariffs

Analysts say the timing of Xi’s visit is no coincidence. Huong Le-Thu of the International Crisis Group noted that the trip sends a “strong political message that Southeast Asia is important to China,” especially as the region braces for the potential consequences of U.S. trade measures.

“Given the severity of Trump’s tariffs and despite the 90-day pause, Southeast Asian nations are anxious that the tariffs, if implemented, could complicate their development,” Le-Thu said.

Vietnam, in particular, finds itself in a delicate position. While operating under a Communist one-party system similar to China, the country has also forged strong ties with Washington. In 2023, Vietnam hosted both U.S. President Joe Biden and Xi Jinping and upgraded its diplomatic relations with the U.S. to the same level as with China and Russia.

Economically, Vietnam has benefited from the shift in global supply chains away from China. Chinese state media reported a 14.6% year-on-year increase in China- Vietnam trade in 2024, reinforcing their complex interdependence.

Still, concerns persist in Washington that Vietnam is being used as a backdoor for Chinese goods, leading to a 46% tariff imposition before the latest temporary reprieve.

“This puts Vietnam in a very precarious situation,” said Nguyen Khac Giang, a fellow at the ISEAS–Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore. “This trip to Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia is all about how China can really insulate itself against the tariffs from Trump.”

Xi has visited Vietnam more frequently in recent years, a signal of China’s strategic recalibration. After Hanoi, he is scheduled to travel to Malaysia and Cambodia to further solidify China’s regional influence.

South China Sea and Lingering Tensions

Despite growing economic cooperation, long-standing territorial disputes between China and Vietnam in the South China Sea remain unresolved. While confrontations between the two countries’ coast guards continue, Vietnam rarely publicizes these incidents to maintain diplomatic balance.

As Xi moves forward with his Southeast Asia tour, his message remains clear: China wants to deepen partnerships and portray itself as a counterweight to Western protectionism and unilateralism.

Katy Perry, Gayle King, and Lauren Sanchez soar to space in all-female Blue Origin flight

Jeff Bezos’ space company, Blue Origin, successfully launched an all-female celebrity crew into space on Monday, marking a historic moment in the evolution of space tourism. The mission was led by Bezos’ fiancée, Lauren Sanchez, and included pop star Katy Perry, broadcast journalist Gayle King, and several other accomplished women.

The flight, launched from West Texas aboard the New Shepard rocket, reached the edge of space — approximately 66 miles (107 kilometers) above Earth — and gave the crew several minutes of weightlessness during the 10-minute, fully automated journey.

Sanchez, a helicopter pilot and former TV journalist, personally invited the group. Joining her were:

  • Katy Perry, singer-songwriter, who serenaded Earth with “What a Wonderful World” while in space;
  • Gayle King, co-host of CBS Mornings, who kissed the ground upon landing and exclaimed, “Oh my God, that was amazing”;
  • Kerianne Flynn, a film producer;
  • Aisha Bowe, a former NASA engineer and advocate for science education;
  • Amanda Nguyen is an astrophysicist and human rights activist.

“This wasn’t just about us taking up space — we were making space for the future,” Perry said during a post-flight press conference. “It’s about a collective energy in there. It’s about us.”

This flight marked Blue Origin’s 11th human spaceflight and the first all-female crew launched from U.S. soil — a milestone in the 64-year history of human space travel. The only other all-female space mission was by Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, who flew solo in 1963.

Despite this progress, women still represent less than 15% of the over 700 individuals who have traveled to space. Sanchez said she intentionally chose an all-female crew to inspire both young and old, commissioning special suits for the mission to symbolize their unity and purpose.

Spectators at the launch included Oprah Winfrey, Kris Jenner, and former NASA astronaut Mae Jemison, the first Black woman in space. Emotions ran high as the capsule reached the edge of space, with cheers and tears from loved ones watching from below.

Bezos, who founded Blue Origin in 2000 after his success with Amazon, personally greeted the crew after landing, opening the capsule and embracing Sanchez, the first to step out. Their wedding is scheduled for later this year in Venice.

While Blue Origin has not disclosed ticket prices or who funded this particular flight, most of its 58 space tourists to date have included business leaders, science advocates, and public figures.

Blue Origin previously made headlines by sending Star Trek actor William Shatner to space in 2021, followed by TV host Michael Strahan and aviation pioneer Wally Funk.

As commercial spaceflight continues to grow, competitors like SpaceX are also expanding access. Chinese-born bitcoin investor Chun Wang recently funded and joined the first polar spaceflight via SpaceX, declaring: “In this exciting new era of commercial spaceflight, the dream of becoming an astronaut is no longer limited to a select few.”

With this latest Blue Origin mission, Lauren Sanchez and her fellow crewmates have quite literally reached for the stars — and in doing so, are helping redefine what the future of space travel can look like.

The flight, launched from West Texas aboard the New Shepard rocket, reached the edge of space — approximately 66 miles (107 kilometers) above Earth — and gave the crew several minutes of weightlessness during the 10-minute, fully automated journey.

Hamas announces it’s sending a delegation to Qatar to resume Gaza ceasefire negotiations

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip. A senior Hamas official confirmed Monday that the Palestinian militant group is dispatching a delegation to Qatar to resume indirect ceasefire negotiations with Israel, as conflict continues to escalate in the Gaza Strip. The move comes amid renewed international concern over worsening humanitarian conditions and a mounting civilian death toll.

The unnamed Hamas official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the ongoing talks, said recent discussions held in Cairo included a new proposal for Hamas to release 8 to 10 hostages currently held in Gaza. However, a major hurdle remains unresolved: whether any potential agreement would include an official end to the war.

The official said the upcoming talks in Qatar are expected to take place later this week or early next week. As of now, Israeli and Qatari authorities have not commented on the development.

The push for renewed dialogue follows the collapse of a previous ceasefire agreement in January that lasted for eight weeks. That truce, initially intended to pave the way for a longer-term resolution, broke down when Israel resumed its offensive, citing its goal to fully dismantle Hamas before considering an end to the conflict.

Since the breakdown of the ceasefire last month, Israel has significantly intensified its operations in Gaza. Humanitarian aid has been effectively blocked, with Israeli forces reportedly seizing control of several strategic areas in an effort to pressure Hamas into accepting a deal closer to Israeli terms.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned Monday that the humanitarian situation in Gaza may now be “the worst” since Israel launched its retaliatory campaign 18 months ago.

“No fuel has come in, no food has come in, no medicine has come in,” said U.N. spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, referring to the Israeli blockade that has remained in place since March 2.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, 38 people were confirmed dead in the past 24 hours, with a total of more than 1,600 Palestinians reportedly killed since the ceasefire’s collapse. The ministry reports that over 50,000 Palestinians have died in Israel’s retaliatory offensive since the conflict began. While the ministry does not distinguish between combatants and civilians, it states that more than half of the casualties have been women and children.

The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking around 250 hostages. While many have been released through previous ceasefire deals, 59 hostages remain in Gaza, 24 of whom are believed to still be alive.

As the international community continues to call for restraint and a lasting peace, the outcome of the upcoming Qatar talks may prove pivotal in shaping the next phase of this protracted and devastating conflict.
