Massive protests erupt across Israel as six hostages found dead in Gaza

JERUSALEM. Israel witnessed massive protests on Sunday as news broke that six hostages held in Gaza were found dead. The demonstrations, driven by growing frustration over the Israeli government’s failure to secure a ceasefire deal that would free all remaining captives, saw up to 500,000 people take to the streets in cities including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

In Jerusalem, protesters blocked major streets and gathered outside the residence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, demanding immediate action to rescue the 101 remaining hostages. Tel Aviv’s main highway was flooded with demonstrators holding flags and banners bearing images of the deceased hostages.

Israeli police, to disperse the crowds, deployed water cannons on protesters who had blocked key roads. Local media reported that 29 people were arrested during the confrontations.

The Israeli military announced that the bodies of the six hostages—Carmel Gat, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Eden Yerushalmi, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi, and Ori Danino—were recovered from a tunnel in Rafah, a city in southern Gaza. According to Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, a military spokesperson, the hostages were “murdered by Hamas terrorists in a number of shots at close range” approximately 48 to 72 hours before their bodies were found.

Netanyahu, under increasing pressure to negotiate an end to the nearly 11-month-long conflict, vowed that Israel “will not rest until those responsible are caught.” He added, “Whoever murders hostages—does not want a deal.”

In response, senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri blamed Israel for the deaths, stating, “Netanyahu is responsible for the killing of Israeli prisoners. The Israelis should choose between Netanyahu and the deal.”

The ongoing conflict began on October 7, when Hamas and allied militants launched attacks on Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the capture of about 250 hostages. Israel’s subsequent military offensive has devastated much of Gaza, with the enclave’s health ministry reporting at least 40,738 Palestinian fatalities. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has left displaced residents struggling with inadequate shelter and widespread hunger.

As tensions rise, Israeli labor leaders have called for a one-day general strike on Monday to pressure the government into securing a ceasefire. Arnon Bar-David, head of Israel’s Trades Union Federation, announced that Ben Gurion Airport, the country’s main air transport hub, would be closed from 8 a.m. (0500 GMT) in support of the strike.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and opposition leader Yair Lapid have also urged the government to pursue an agreement. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a hardline member of Israel’s security cabinet, has requested that the attorney general block the strike in an attempt to prevent further unrest.

The Hostage Families Forum issued a statement calling on Netanyahu to take responsibility for the delays in signing a ceasefire agreement, which they believe contributed to the recent deaths of the hostages. “The six hostages brought home on Sunday were all murdered in the last few days, after surviving almost 11 months of abuse, torture, and starvation in Hamas captivity. The delay in signing the deal has led to their deaths and those of many other hostages,” the forum stated.

While Netanyahu’s office reported that he had expressed “deep sorrow” to the family of Alexander Lobanov, the family of Carmel Gat refused to engage with the prime minister. Instead, they urged the public to intensify their protests. “Take to the streets and shut down the country until everyone returns. They can still be saved,” Gat’s cousin, Gil Dickmann, wrote on social media platform X.

U.S. President Joe Biden expressed his anger and sorrow over the deaths, particularly of 23-year-old Israeli American Hersh Goldberg-Polin. “Hamas leaders will pay for these crimes. And we will keep working around the clock for a deal to secure the release of the remaining hostages,” Biden stated. He also expressed cautious optimism about reaching a ceasefire agreement, despite the ongoing challenges in the negotiations mediated by the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt.

Hamas negotiator Khalil Al-Hayya, speaking to Al-Jazeera, reiterated the group’s stance, insisting that no agreement would be signed unless Israel fully withdrew from Gaza, including key strategic areas like the Philadelphi and Netzarim corridors, which have been major sticking points in the talks.

San Pedro City councilor files plunder and graft complaints against Mayor Mercado and other officials

SAN PEDRO CITY, Laguna. San Pedro City Councilor Carlon “Lonlon” Ambayec has lodged criminal complaints for plunder and graft against the entire elected officials of San Pedro City, Laguna, including Mayor Art Francis Joseph Mercado and Vice Mayor Divina Olivarez. The complaints were filed last week before the Office of the Ombudsman.

Ambayec accused the officials of violating Republic Act 7080 (Plunder) and Republic Act 3019 (Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act) due to their alleged unauthorized purchase of a 12,274-square-meter property in Barangay Laram, San Pedro City, costing P73,644,000.

The councilor claims that the land was acquired without proper legal proceedings and that the transaction was overpriced. He further noted that the property houses informal settlers, and no relocation plan was provided for them, which is a requirement for government land acquisitions.

“I did not sign their resolution because it was the people’s money that they were using. They said the lot would be for various future government projects, but spending such a huge amount without a clear plan is unacceptable,” Ambayec stated.

In addition to Mayor Mercado and Vice Mayor Olivarez, the complaint also names City Councilors Michael Casacop, Sheriliz Almoro, Joie Chelsea Villegas, Leslie Lu, and Atty. Mark Oliveros, Aldrin Mercado, Bernadette Olivarez, Jose Mendoza, and Vincent Solidum. Other officials implicated include ex-officio members Diwa Tayao and Raphael Ty, city administrator Atty. Henry Salazar, and 12 additional city officials.

Ambayec emphasized that the purchase lacked a clear purpose and that the local government did not appoint a board of assessors to evaluate the property’s value, nor was the acquisition included in their annual investment plan. “The local government cannot buy any land property without specifying their plans for it. I know that is not allowed,” he added.

Another Duterte presidency? ‘Shimenet’ like or she may like the answer

Pretend it is 2022 now. Can Sara win as president? Sure. No doubt. But she may not (“shimenet” in chronicles’ word of the week) like it. Reason: I just pretended to say it.

She knew how her father’s pretension for political correctness began to severely increase when he campaigned as a presidential candidate in 2016. She knew the end of his 2016-2022 presidency would come. And now that she is VP, rather than successor of her father, she has no one to blame but herself. Everything presidential was an open book to her and her supporters. They studied that a bit. But as for the reason why they underestimated everything unpresidential during that time, nobody knew. Sara and her supporters did not know that there was a lot of it. They did not bother to study. Or maybe, they pretended that everything was presidential in Tatay Digong. They thought it was for continuity’s sake, riding on Dutertismo which was so high. Its extremes, however, had to last because they allowed themselves to be subordinated by, and subservient to, the candidacy of “truly” their President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

Sara called that UniTeam. Its theme was what political communicators and observers wanted to clear up. To date the question has remained unanswered: Why was unity the political platform? And the trendier question, “Bakit pagkakaisa na nga lang ang plataporma, hindi pa natupad?” (It was a mere platform of unity, but why was it not fulfilled?) is more for Sara, than BBM.

The VP’s followers did not mind the mind of the youthful political communicator Orville B. Tatcho, PhD, a Fulbright scholar in the USA from 2018-2021. (They usually explain, “Abugada si Inday, alam niya lahat yan.”) This UP Baguio associate professor conducted in-depth studies of the elder Duterte owing to his research interests which include presidential debates and advertising and political rhetoric.

In “Beyond Strategic Maneuvering: Embodied Storytelling as Duterte’s Form of Argumentation,” Tatcho rationalized how the then Chief Executive would tell stories, how the storytelling would function, where it would “draw its currency and its pitfalls.”

The paper concluded in part: “Now four years through his term, Duterte continues to engage in embodied storytelling with mixed consequences—what was once touted as refreshing during the campaign because of a semblance of authenticity has now, in the context of the pandemic, more forcefully drawn the ire of citizens demanding detailed policy and concrete action. A rhetorical performance must therefore be continuously interrogated through time, going beyond a single event.” (Tatcho, 2020)

In “The Rhetoric of Anti-Intellectualism: Facebook Pages in Duterte’s Propaganda,” the University of Alabama-educated researcher probed “the ways in which anti-intellectualism operates in and through the Facebook pages that comprised Duterte’s propaganda machine.”

He continued: “The examples that open this study show a traditional form of anti-intellectualism that attacks institutions of knowledge such as science and research. The pundits in Duterte’s propaganda machine, however, use anti-intellectualism to attack those that they perceive as “elitist” or more specifically, critics of Duterte. Their form of anti-intellectualism is populist anti-elitism as they eschew knowledge that is supposedly exclusionary in favor of an epistemic regime that values knowledge that is practical, commonsensical, and convenient. They wage a war against critics and intellectuals who always “belittle” the Filipino poor and the mainstream media or the ‘presstitutes’ they label as corrupt or paid hacks. The bloggers and pundits also claim to act as opinion leaders with ‘neither wealth nor pedigree’ (Thinking Pinoy) who cater to the ‘ordinary Filipinos’ (Mocha Uson Blog) and who provide commentary through ‘tongue-in-cheek posts, written in street-style language’ (Sasot).” (Tatcho, 2024)

Examining public speeches, according to him, is a genuine act of citizenship.

“The reality of trolls, bots, deep fakes, and phony accounts should increasingly be recognized to understand how disinformation operates both rhetorically and technologically,” Tatcho wrote, adding that there is a need to review public sphere on social media “not only because of how pundits and their echo chambers detract from meaningful deliberation, but also due to the ways in which algorithms popularize certain forms of content.”

And what was expected occurred: After netizens’ reexamination after reexamination of the elder Duterte’s palpable bloopers and unfilled campaign promises, and immediately after highly controversial taxpayer money issues worth P125 million that cannot be explained by the Office of VP Sara but immediately (11 days to be exact) spent anyway, coupled with DepEd leadership controversies, resignation from that department whose budget is the government’s top priority, having a self-authored children’s book “Isang Kaibigan” but asking the public to finance it to the tune of P10 million in an unfriendly and acrimonious manner, and many other fiascos, including the latest COA issuance of P73-M notice of disallowance on her office’s disbursement of confidential funds in 2022, paano pa maibi-“bida ang saya” meant for the wannabe dictator in waiting?

If the controversies hounding the VP linger – as much as she has been avoiding legitimate questions –her popularity ratings will continue to drop, and people will surely come to their senses by trying to totally reject her even years before the 2028 presidential elections.

“Shimenet” like to be questioned in vice-presidential debates in 2022 and she may not act any longer as if people have yet to learn to have curiosity in learning what she is not capable of. That may not be avoided. Shimenet.

US Rapper Fatman Scoop dies at 53 after collapsing on stage in Connecticut

Hamden, Connecticut. US rapper Fatman Scoop, known for his powerful voice and energetic performances, has passed away at the age of 53 after collapsing on stage during a concert on Friday. The rapper, whose real name was Isaac Freeman III, was performing at Town Center Park in Hamden when the incident occurred.

According to Hamden Mayor Lauren Garrett, who shared the news on Facebook, Fatman Scoop was rushed to a local hospital by ambulance but tragically did not survive. His booking agency, MN2S, confirmed his death in a statement to the BBC, noting that his “legacy will live on through his timeless music.”

“Scoop was a beloved figure in the music world, whose work was cherished by countless fans across the globe,” an MN2S spokesperson said. “His iconic voice, infectious energy, and great personality made an indelible mark on the industry.”

Fatman Scoop’s family also paid tribute to the rapper on social media, describing him as “a radiant soul, a beacon of light on the stage and in life.” They added, “He was not just a world-class performer; he was a father, brother, uncle, and friend. He brought laughter to our lives, was a constant source of support, and showed unwavering strength and courage.”

Fatman Scoop was a prominent figure in New York City’s hip hop scene during the 1990s and gained international fame with hits such as “Be Faithful,” which topped the charts in the UK and Ireland in 2003. He also collaborated on the Grammy-winning track “Lose Control” by Missy Elliott and “It’s Like That” by Mariah Carey.

Beyond music, Scoop made appearances on television, including the UK TV series Chancers in 2004 and as a contestant on Celebrity Big Brother 16: UK vs USA in 2015, where he was the third housemate to be evicted.

His tour manager, DJ Pure Cold, expressed his grief in an Instagram post, saying he was “lost for words” at the news of his friend’s death. “You took me all over the world and had me performing alongside you on some of the biggest and greatest stages on this planet,” DJ Pure Cold wrote. “The things you taught me have truly made me the man I am today.”

Fatman Scoop was scheduled to perform at the UK’s Reminisce Festival on September 7. The festival organizers described the news of his passing as “devastating,” adding, “He was not just one of our most popular performers; he was a cherished member of the Reminisce family. His energy, talent, and infectious spirit will be missed more than words can express.”

Experts: Mpox walang koneksyon sa HIV; aktibong kaso sa Pinas umabot na sa 8

MAYNILA. Nilinaw ni Dr. Rontgene Solante, isang kilalang infectious disease expert, na walang direktang kaugnayan ang mpox (dating tinawag na monkeypox) sa human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Bagaman noong 2022 ay napansin na karamihan sa mga nahawahan ng mpox ay may HIV, ipinaliwanag ni Dr. Solante na magkaibang uri ng virus ang dalawang sakit na ito.

Ayon kay Dr. Solante, ang HIV ay isang progresibong impeksiyon na unti-unting sinisira ang immune system ng isang tao, samantalang ang mpox ay isang uri ng virus na maaaring maipasa sa pamamagitan ng close at intimate na skin-to-skin contact. Bagamat may mga ulat na nagpapakita na ang ilang kaso ng mpox ay nakuha sa pakikipagtalik, binigyang-diin ni Solante na ang HIV at mpox ay hindi magkaugnay.

Ayon sa Department of Health (DOH), ang mpox ay maaaring maipasa sa pamamagitan ng pakikipagtalik, at kinumpirma rin na ang ilan sa mga aktibong kaso ng mpox sa bansa ngayon ay nagkaroon ng sexual contact bago lumabas ang mga sintomas ng sakit.

Noong Linggo, kinumpirma ng DOH na walo na ang aktibong kaso ng mpox sa Pilipinas matapos makapagtala ng tatlong bagong kaso. Dalawa sa mga bagong kaso ay mula sa Metro Manila, at ang isa ay mula sa Calabarzon.

Ang tatlong bagong kaso ay nagpakita ng mas mild na sintomas mula sa MPXV clade II. Ayon sa DOH, ang mga kaso 15 at 16 ay nagkaroon ng anonymous sexual encounters sa higit sa isang partner, habang ang kaso 17 naman ay nagkaroon ng skin-to-skin contact sa isang tao na mayroong skin symptoms.

Ayon sa DOH, “The total case count is now 17 since July 2022. Nine cases have long recovered since 2023. Eight are active cases waiting for symptoms to resolve.”

Ang bagyo ay kumikilos sa direksyong kanluran hilagang-kanluran sa bilis na 10 km/h. Mula sa gitna nito, ang malakas hanggang sa lakas ng hangin ay umaabot hanggang 250 km palabas.

Inaasahan na sa susunod na 24 na oras, si Enteng ay gagalaw pahilagang-kanluran at posibleng mag-landfall sa Isabela o Cagayan sa hapon o gabi ng Lunes. Gayunpaman, kung lilihis ang landas nito, posibleng mag-landfall ito sa hilagang bahagi ng Aurora.

Pope Francis to visit Jakarta’s Istiqlal mosque in a bid to foster interfaith harmony

JAKARTA. Pope Francis is set to visit Indonesia next week, making a significant stop at Jakarta’s Istiqlal Mosque. This visit is part of his 12-day Asia-Pacific tour, which also includes stops in Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and Singapore. The visit to Istiqlal Mosque, the largest in Southeast Asia, is particularly noteworthy due to the mosque’s unique connection to Jakarta’s Catholic cathedral via the “Tunnel of Friendship.”

The 28.3-meter tunnel, which was built by the Indonesian government in 2020, symbolizes religious harmony in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation. This theme has been a hallmark of Pope Francis’s travels during his 11-year papacy. The tunnel, which connects Istiqlal Mosque to the Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral, features windows that allow natural light to enter and is adorned with inscribed art on its walls. Although the tunnel is not yet open to the public, the Pope’s visit will highlight its significance as a symbol of unity.

“It’s extraordinary that the Catholics’ number one figure is coming,” said Nasaruddin Umar, the grand imam of Istiqlal Mosque. He emphasized the importance of respecting the Pope as a guest, regardless of religious differences. Istiqlal Mosque’s vast parking lot is often made available to churchgoers during major events, further demonstrating the spirit of cooperation between the two faith communities.

Symbol of Friendship Amidst a Complex Religious Landscape

Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, Indonesia’s Minister of Religious Affairs, hailed the Pope’s visit as a symbol of friendship among people of all religions in Indonesia. “The Pope’s visit makes Indonesia the barometer of peace and a pillar of tolerance,” he told Reuters.

However, Indonesia’s history of religious harmony has been complex. Catholicism was introduced to the country by Portuguese missionaries in the 16th century, but it was banned during Dutch colonial rule in favor of Protestantism. The Vatican only officially established diplomatic relations with Indonesia in the 1940s.

Despite being a secular state, Indonesia has faced challenges in maintaining religious harmony. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom reported that “Indonesia’s religious freedom conditions remained poor” in 2023, citing regulations that led to the closure of places of worship, including churches. Andreas Harsono, a researcher for Human Rights Watch in Indonesia, pointed to these laws as the root cause of religious intolerance and church closures.

The vaccination drive commenced in central Gaza and will progressively move to other areas over the coming days. The fighting is set to pause for at least eight hours on three consecutive days to allow the campaign to proceed. However, WHO officials noted that these pauses might need to extend to a fourth day, with the first round of vaccinations expected to take just under two weeks.

Children, accompanied by their families, crowded a UN-run clinic in Deir Al-Balah, where around one million people are currently taking refuge. Medical staff marked children who received the vaccine with ink on their fingers as a precautionary measure.
