Olympics 2024: Paris kicks off with a dazzling opening as Celine Dion and Lady Gaga captivate audiences

PARIS, France. The 2024 Paris Olympics kicked off with an extraordinary Opening Ceremony on Friday, despite hours of rain. The event captivated audiences with its blend of French cultural tributes, modern inclusivity, and spectacular performances by international stars.

The ceremony featured a unique combination of can-can dancers, tributes to French history, acrobatics, drag performances, jet flyovers, and rap music. The highlight of the night was the surprise performances by Lady Gaga and Celine Dion.

Lady Gaga dazzled with her rendition of a French cabaret song, while Celine Dion, performing publicly for the first time in four years due to a neurological disorder, brought the house down with Edith Piaf’s “Hymn to Love” on the Eiffel Tower.

French President Emmanuel Macron officially declared the Games open as the Olympic flame was lit atop a hot air balloon, symbolizing French achievements in science. The flame was carried on a relay that included athletic legends on a boat along the Seine, culminating at the Trocadero with the Eiffel Tower illuminated by lasers and strobe effects.

The ceremony was notable for being the first to take place outside a stadium. Competitors were transported along a nearly four-mile stretch of the Seine on various vessels, including barges and motorboats. This innovative approach showcased a vision of a modern and inclusive France.

Performances included Mali-born singer Aya Nakamura, who faced controversy over her music’s foreign influences but received enthusiastic applause. The ceremony also featured drag queens in a fashion runway show.

The Opening Ceremony faced heightened security measures due to recent arson attacks on French railways. Despite the rain, which led to early exits by some spectators, the event was described as “fantastic” by Paris 2024 organizing president Tony Estanguet.

The Games will continue until August 11, with over 10,500 athletes competing across 329 events. The flame will remain alight from sunset until 2 a.m. local time every day.

Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony: Controversial Drag Queen Performance Sparks Outrage

The 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony has ignited international controversy with its inclusion of drag queen-themed performances of religious and historical imagery. Among the most debated was a parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” featuring drag queens and a large woman in a halo crown.

The ceremony featured numerous performances riffing on French history and culture, including a headless Marie Antoinette singing with her severed head in drag-style makeup. The use of drag queens was a recurring theme, with three drag queens participating as torchbearers in the Olympic relay.

Prominent figures, including Tesla founder Elon Musk, criticized the portrayal as “extremely disrespectful to Christians.” Musk stated, “This was extremely disrespectful to Christians.” NFL player Harrison Butker condemned the display by quoting scripture, “Be not deceived, God is not mocked.”

Ex-transgender influencer Oli London and cultural commentators also voiced their disapproval, with some describing the event as a “long drag show” and expressing concerns over the perceived mockery of Christian symbols.

Despite the controversy, the ceremony proceeded with a grand display of French culture and modern inclusivity. The Paris Olympics will run until August 11, with the Olympic flame burning until the closing ceremony.

Social media users accused the drag queens of ridiculing Christianity by replicating the Last Supper.

NASA’s Webb telescope unveils super Jupiter with unusually long orbit

0

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. The Webb Space Telescope has identified a remarkable exoplanet, dubbed a “super Jupiter,” orbiting a neighboring star at an extraordinarily slow pace. This gas giant, comparable in diameter to Jupiter but with six times its mass, has an orbit that spans over a century, potentially up to 250 years.

The planet, which shares a hydrogen-rich atmosphere with Jupiter, orbits its star—Epsilon Indi A—in a region 15 times farther from its star than Earth is from the sun. This star is part of a three-star system located 12 light-years away, a distance equivalent to 5.8 trillion miles.

Elisabeth Matthews of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany led an international team that captured the planet’s images last year. Their findings were published Wednesday in the journal Nature. The planet was observed through a special shading device on the Webb Telescope, which blocked the starlight to highlight the planet’s infrared emissions.

At 3.5 billion years old, the planet and its star are significantly older than our solar system but not as old as previously anticipated. Despite its proximity, the star is visible to the naked eye from the Southern Hemisphere.

Elisabeth Matthews noted, “This is a gas giant with no hard surface or liquid water oceans,” emphasizing that the likelihood of life on this planet is minimal. She also mentioned that while this solar system may not host more gas giants, there could be smaller rocky planets hidden within.

The discovery adds to our understanding of planetary evolution over billions of years. Since the confirmation of the first exoplanets in the early 1990s, NASA has identified 5,690 exoplanets by mid-July, primarily using the transit method, which detects planets by observing periodic dips in starlight.

The Webb Telescope, launched in 2021 by NASA and the European Space Agency, is the most advanced astronomical observatory ever sent into space, continuing to provide groundbreaking insights into distant worlds and their characteristics.

U.S. admits to secret anti-vaccine propaganda campaign against China’s Sinovac in the Philippines

WASHINGTON. The U.S. Defense Department has acknowledged that it conducted a covert psychological operation aimed at undermining China’s Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine during the pandemic, according to a document released on June 25. This admission comes in response to revelations from a recent Reuters investigation and has sparked significant controversy and scrutiny.

The document, cited by former Philippine presidential spokesperson Harry Roque and reviewed by Reuters, confirms that the Pentagon engaged in messaging that questioned the safety and efficacy of Sinovac’s vaccine. The Defense Department acknowledged these actions in communications with the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs and Department of National Defense.

“It is true that the [Department of Defense] did message Philippine audiences questioning the safety and efficacy of Sinovac,” the document states. It further admits that the Pentagon made “some missteps in our COVID-related messaging” but asserts that the military has since “vastly improved oversight and accountability of information operations” since 2022.

The Pentagon’s clandestine operation, which also targeted other developing countries in Central Asia, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, was exposed by a June 14 Reuters investigation. The report led to a Philippine Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing and a formal request for clarification from U.S. officials.

According to the June 25 document, the Pentagon admitted that its anti-vaccine campaign was “misaligned with our priorities” and stated that operatives ceased COVID-related messaging, including misinformation about COVID-19 origins and vaccines, in August 2021.

Despite requests for comment, the Philippines’ defense and foreign affairs departments have not responded. The U.S. State Department directed inquiries to the Defense Department. Pentagon spokesman Pete Nguyen did not confirm the specific details of the document but acknowledged that the Pentagon distributed “social media content about the safety and efficacy of Sinovac.”

At the time of the operation, U.S. national security officials were concerned that China’s distribution of COVID-19 aid, including vaccines, could be leveraged to strengthen geopolitical influence and undermine U.S. alliances. The covert operation used online bots and fake social media accounts to spread misinformation, with Reuters identifying a network of such accounts on X (formerly Twitter). X removed these profiles after confirming they were part of a coordinated campaign.

Nguyen stated that an internal review found the Pentagon was not responsible for troubling social media content related to the Philippines but did not address whether contractors or non-military partners were involved.

The Reuters investigation, which involved interviews with over two dozen current and former officials, contractors, and experts, has drawn sharp criticism from public health advocates. They condemned the campaign as dangerous and unethical, noting it put lives at risk.

In response, Sinovac spokeswoman Yuan Youwei criticized the U.S. military’s actions, saying, “Stigmatizing vaccination will lead to a series of consequences, such as a lower inoculation rate, the outbreak and spread of disease, social panic and insecurity, as well as crises of confidence in science and public health.”

The Philippine Senate, led by Senator Imee Marcos, has launched an investigation into the matter. At a hearing on June 25, Marcos condemned the campaign as “evil, wicked, dangerous, unethical” and questioned whether it violated international law or if the Philippines had any legal recourse.

Mexican kingpin ‘El Mayo’ and El Chapo’s son arrested by US authorities

0

EL PASO, Texas. U.S. authorities have arrested Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, a prominent Mexican drug lord, and Joaquín Guzmán López, the son of notorious drug trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, in El Paso, Texas.

The arrests on Thursday mark a major victory for U.S. law enforcement in their ongoing battle against drug trafficking and may significantly impact the Mexican criminal landscape. Zambada, one of the most influential figures in drug trafficking history and a co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel alongside El Chapo, is in his 70s. His co-defendant, Guzmán López, is in his 30s and is one of El Chapo’s four sons, collectively known as Los Chapitos.

The two men were apprehended after arriving in El Paso on a private plane. Guzmán López reportedly orchestrated the operation to lure Zambada into U.S. custody, according to three U.S. officials who spoke anonymously.

U.S. President Joe Biden praised the arrests, stating, “Too many of our citizens have lost their lives to the scourge of fentanyl. Too many families have been broken and are suffering because of this destructive drug.”

The charges against Zambada and Guzmán López involve their leadership roles in the cartel’s extensive fentanyl trafficking network. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized that the arrests target the leadership of a cartel heavily implicated in the U.S. fentanyl crisis, stating, “Fentanyl is the deadliest drug threat our country has ever faced, and the Justice Department will not rest until every single cartel leader, member, and associate responsible for poisoning our communities is held accountable.”

The arrests were carried out by a joint operation involving the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Zambada had a $15 million reward for his capture, while Guzmán López’s bounty was set at $5 million.

At Santa Teresa airport near El Paso, a witness described the scene: “Two individuals got off the plane… and were calmly taken into custody,” noting that the operation appeared well-coordinated and controlled.

The Sinaloa Cartel, known for its sophisticated drug trafficking operations across more than 50 countries, has become a primary target for U.S. authorities. Zambada and El Chapo’s sons represent different generations of drug traffickers, with Zambada being a more discreet, “old-school” operator compared to the flashy and violent nature of El Chapo’s sons.

The arrests of these two key figures may lead to instability within the cartel’s ranks, potentially sparking further violence in Sinaloa. The Mexican government was notified of the detentions but did not participate in the operation, according to Mexico’s Security Minister Rosa Rodriguez.

The broader implications of this operation, including potential cartel infighting and the impact on fentanyl trafficking, will be closely monitored in the coming months.

  • Gasolina: P0.70 hanggang P0.95 kada litro
  • Diesel: P0.70 hanggang P0.95 kada litro
  • Kerosene: P0.80 hanggang P0.90 kada litro

“As much as possible. Hangga’t maari. If the school buildings are in a condition to take classes, they will do it. Pero meron pa talaga na kakaunti na lang ‘yung may tubig pero marami naiwan na putik, hindi magamit. Tapos may nasira na gamit, We’d have to replace them,” sabi ng Pangulo.

That’s the usual ano, hangga’t maaari, open the schools and conduct classes. There are areas na hindi talaga pwede.”

Arson attacks disrupt France’s train network hours before Olympic ceremony

PARIS. France’s TGV high-speed train network was targeted in a series of coordinated arson attacks early Friday morning, causing significant travel disruptions and highlighting security vulnerabilities just hours before the Paris Olympics opening ceremony.

The attacks, which damaged signal substations and cables along key rail lines connecting Paris with major cities including Lille, Bordeaux, and Strasbourg, have led to widespread chaos. Another assault on the Paris-Marseille line was reportedly thwarted. The SNCF, France’s state-owned railway operator, is working to repair the damage, but travel disruptions are expected to persist through the weekend.

The coordinated nature of the sabotage has led to initial suspicions of involvement by leftist militants or environmental activists, though there has been no evidence to confirm these claims. The Paris prosecutor’s office has tasked its organized crime unit and the anti-terrorist sub-directorate (SDAT) with overseeing the investigation.

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal commented on the situation, saying, “What we know, what we see, is that this operation was prepared, coordinated, that nerve centres were targeted, which shows a certain knowledge of the network to know where to strike.”

The timing of the attacks has intensified anxiety ahead of the Olympics opening ceremony scheduled for later today. Additionally, operations at the Basel-Mulhouse airport were briefly halted due to a bomb alert.

International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach expressed confidence in French authorities, stating, “I don’t have concerns.”

With more than 300,000 spectators expected to gather along the River Seine for the opening ceremony, and billions anticipated to watch globally, France has deployed 45,000 police officers, 10,000 soldiers, and 2,000 private security agents for the event. Snipers and drones will be part of the extensive security measures.

The TGV attacks have left hundreds of thousands stranded. Eurostar services between London and Paris have been rerouted to slower tracks, and Deutsche Bahn has warned of potential disruptions to long-distance services. SNCF has urged travelers to postpone their journeys and is working to repair the affected lines.

Xavier Hiegel, a traveler at Gare de L’Est, expressed disbelief at the sabotage, stating, “The Games bring jobs so this really is nonsense. I hope the people responsible will be found and punished.”

SNCF chief Jean-Pierre Farandou reported that around 800,000 passengers have been affected. Paris Region President Valerie Pecresse described the attacks as an attempt to “destabilize France.”

Brigitte Dupont, a Parisian, lamented the situation: “Today is the opening of the Olympic Games, a huge event that was supposed to be magnificent, and this is spoiling people’s joy.”

Paris 2024 officials are collaborating with SNCF to address the situation, as the attacks create additional hurdles for those traveling to the capital for the Games.

Movie review: ‘The Fabulous Four’ – A charming third-act friendship comedy

When it comes to scheduling a movie release, there’s an art to it—just ask about the phenomenon of “Barbenheimer.” While studios often steer clear of releasing films in competition with blockbuster superhero movies, the decision to open the third-act female friendship comedy “The Fabulous Four” alongside “Deadpool & Wolverine” is both bold and intriguing. If any audience is underrepresented during a weekend filled with high-octane superhero action, it’s surely women over 60. What better way to provide an alternative than with a lively trip to Key West featuring Bette Midler, Susan Sarandon, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Megan Mullally?

Similar to “80 for Brady” and “Book Club,” “The Fabulous Four” may not be a cinematic masterpiece, but it has its own unique charm. While it sometimes overreaches with its attempts at humor—such as a chaotic parasailing trip and edibles—it also brings a refreshing sense of sanity amidst its improbabilities. The film begins with a somewhat convoluted backstory explaining the friendship among the four main characters: Lou (Sarandon), Marilyn (Midler), Alice (Mullally), and Kitty (Ralph). Although it hints at a slight age gap between Lou and Marilyn and the other two friends, it’s best not to dwell on the specifics.

More intriguing than the origins of their friendship is the question of how these women have maintained their bond over decades. The film primarily explores the 40-year estrangement between Lou, now a heart surgeon, and Marilyn, who is recently widowed and newly engaged. Alice and Kitty, each with their own quirks—Alice as a rock star and Kitty as a cannabis entrepreneur—are still involved in the fallout of this old feud. They deceive Lou into visiting Key West under the pretense of winning a polydactyl (six-toed) cat and a tour of the Hemingway House, only to surprise her at Marilyn’s home. This scheme seems ill-conceived and becomes more problematic when the root cause of their fallout is revealed.

Directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse, known for her female-centric films like “How to Make an American Quilt” and “The Dressmaker,” and written by Jenna Milly and Ann Marie Allison, “The Fabulous Four” struggles to find a harmonious tone. The characters, while individually engaging, do not quite gel together as a group. Midler’s portrayal of Marilyn is larger-than-life, bordering on parody, though her character’s obsession with TikToks and rapid engagement provide some intrigue. Sarandon’s Lou is the most well-rounded character, presenting a rule-abiding woman in need of change, though her comedic moments with edibles and flirtations with Key West bachelors (played by Bruce Greenwood and Timothy V. Murphy) are hit-or-miss.

Ultimately, “The Fabulous Four” might have benefited from focusing more on the nuanced aspects of long-lasting friendship rather than relying heavily on zany escapades. Nevertheless, the film has its endearing moments, and spontaneous musical numbers featuring this talented cast provide a delightful break from reality.

“The Fabulous Four,” a Bleecker Street release, hits theaters on Friday. It is rated R by the Motion Picture Association for “drug use, some sexual material, language,” and runs for 98 minutes. Rating: 2 out of 4 stars.

Ethiopia landslide death toll may surge to 500, UN reports

0

ADDIS ABABA. The death toll from recent landslides in Ethiopia has climbed to 257, with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) warning that the number could nearly double. The tragic incidents occurred earlier this week in the Gofa Zone of southern Ethiopia, following heavy rains that triggered the landslides.

According to UNOCHA, “The death toll is expected to rise to up to 500 people as per information received from local authorities.” This grim update comes after a landslide on Sunday night buried numerous individuals, followed by a second landslide on Monday that impacted rescue efforts.

Ethiopia’s National Disaster Risk Management Commission had initially reported the death toll as 229 on Tuesday. Dagmawi Ayele, an administrator for the Gofa Zone, confirmed that rescuers have recovered 226 bodies, which were subsequently buried after a funeral ceremony. Efforts are ongoing to locate 20 more individuals.

“It is too dangerous to approach the site,” Ayele noted, citing continued rainfall as a significant challenge for rescue operations. The situation remains dire as the region endures ongoing heavy rains.
