New Israeli raids in Gaza amid Netanyahu’s U.S. visit

GAZA. Israeli forces launched new raids in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, just hours before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s scheduled address to the U.S. Congress. The latest Israeli strikes targeted homes in towns east of Khan Younis in southern Gaza, displacing thousands of residents who sought shelter further west, according to local sources.

The Palestinian Civil Emergency Service reported receiving distress calls from residents trapped in Bani Suhaila, east of Khan Younis. However, they were unable to reach the area. Medics confirmed that two Palestinians were killed in an airstrike on Bani Suhaila, where the armed wing of the Palestinian militant group Hamas claimed responsibility for detonating a bomb against an Israeli army personnel carrier.

Israel’s military, which is intensifying its efforts to dismantle Hamas following the October 7 attack on Israel, stated that its operations targeted areas from which fighters had launched rockets into Israel and attacked Israeli troops. Over the past 24 hours, Israeli strikes have killed at least 55 people, raising the total number of Palestinian casualties to over 39,000, according to Gaza health officials.

In a message from Hamad City in northwestern Khan Younis, Ghada, who has been displaced six times during the ongoing conflict, expressed frustration and desperation: “Where should we go? Shall we cross into the sea? We are exhausted, starved, and want the war to end now, now not an hour later.”

Residents reported being ordered to evacuate westward to a designated humanitarian area, only to find it unsafe. The Israeli military issued these evacuation orders via social media and phone calls.

In addition to the southern Gaza raids, Israeli airstrikes hit several areas in central and northern Gaza, including the Al-Bureij camp, where health officials reported nine fatalities.

Netanyahu’s U.S. Visit Sparks Protests

WASHINGTON. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s arrival in Washington has sparked a series of protests, including a sit-in at a congressional office building that led to multiple arrests. The protests, organized by Jewish Voice for Peace, featured demonstrators clad in red T-shirts reading “Not In Our Name,” who occupied the Cannon Building’s rotunda, chanting “Let Gaza Live!”

The U.S. Capitol Police issued several warnings before arresting protesters, who were bound with zip ties and removed one-by-one. Jane Hirschmann, a protester and daughter of Holocaust survivors, voiced her concerns: “I am the daughter of Holocaust survivors and I know what a Holocaust looks like. When we say ‘Never Again,’ we mean never for anybody.”

Protesters directed much of their anger at the Biden administration, demanding an immediate halt to arms shipments to Israel. “We’re not focusing on Netanyahu. He’s just a symptom,” Hirschmann said. “But how can (Biden) be calling for a cease-fire when he’s sending them bombs and planes?”

As of Tuesday night, the Capitol Police had not released a final count of arrests, but Jewish Voice for Peace claimed that 400 people, including over a dozen rabbis, had been detained. Rep. Dan Kildee’s office reported that demonstrators had become disruptive, leading to police intervention.

In contrast, families of hostages held by Hamas held a vigil on the National Mall, urging Netanyahu to negotiate a deal to secure the release of approximately 120 Israeli hostages still in Gaza. Aviva Siegel, a former captive, pleaded with Netanyahu: “I want Bibi to look in my eyes and tell me one thing: that Keith is coming home.”

Further protests are expected as Netanyahu is scheduled to address Congress on Wednesday. In preparation, security around the Capitol has been heightened, with multiple road closures. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are set to meet with Netanyahu on Thursday, while former President Donald Trump announced plans to meet him on Friday.

Flash report: NCR, isinailalim sa state of calamity dahil sa matinding pagbaha; walang pasok bukas

0

MAYNILA.

Sa naturang pagpupulong, sinabi ni Secretary Abalos, “There is a motion to declare Metro Manila in state of calamity by Mayor Francis Zamora and Chairman Don, seconded by Mayor Lani Cayetano, the motion is hereby approved. Metro Manila is now in a state of calamity.”

Sinabi ni Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., “Usually, ang state of calamity is the LGU (local government unit) executive.’Pag regional, it’s because nagkasabay-sabay. Pagka three regions ang involved then already the national has to come in.”

Discover the world’s most sterile pigs, engineered to produce human kidneys and hearts

BLACKSBURG, Va. In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, a groundbreaking initiative is underway that could reshape the future of organ transplantation. This unique research farm is home to some of the world’s cleanest pigs, bred and raised specifically to produce organs for human transplantation.

The farm, operated by Revivicor Inc., represents a leap forward in xenotransplantation, where gene-edited pig organs are being prepared for potential human use. Visitors to this high-security facility are met with stringent biosecurity measures: vehicle decontamination, changing into medical scrubs, and disinfecting boots before entering the climate-controlled barns.

“These are precious animals,” said David Ayares, Chief Scientific Officer at Revivicor, who has dedicated decades to perfecting the genetic modifications required for successful organ transplantation. His efforts have led to the first successful gene-edited pig organ transplants into humans.

Just a few miles away in Christiansburg, Virginia, a new, even more advanced facility is being prepared. This state-of-the-art building, more akin to a pharmaceutical plant than a traditional farm, will house a herd of pigs specifically bred to supply organs for future clinical trials. The facility features extreme biosecurity measures, with access restricted to select employees who undergo thorough decontamination processes before entering.

Matthew VonEsch of United Therapeutics, Revivicor’s parent company, explained, “We designed this facility to protect the pigs against contamination from the environment and from people. Every person that enters this building is a possible pathogen risk.”

The demand for organ transplants is overwhelming, with thousands of Americans dying each year due to organ shortages. Scientists hope that using genetically engineered pigs could provide a viable solution. Pigs are being engineered to possess human-like organ traits, aiming to alleviate the chronic shortage of human donors.

In the U.S., there have been four experimental transplants involving pig organs, including two hearts and two kidneys. Although these procedures were performed on critically ill patients who ultimately did not survive, they provided crucial data for ongoing research. The FDA is now reviewing these results and awaiting further studies before making regulatory decisions.

The process of creating these bioengineered pigs involves modifying their genes to minimize the risk of organ rejection and other complications. Initially, Revivicor removed a gene that produces a sugar molecule triggering immediate immune response in humans. Subsequent modifications have involved additional gene edits to further reduce immune reactions and optimize organ function.

The cloning of these genetically modified pigs is performed with meticulous precision, similar to the process used to create Dolly the sheep. Scientists inject modified DNA into pig eggs, which are then implanted into surrogate sows to develop into piglets.

On the research farm, these pigs live in luxury, with their accommodations designed to ensure maximum cleanliness and comfort. Music is played to acclimate piglets to human voices, and the environment is meticulously controlled to maintain high standards of hygiene.

“There are certain ones I say hi to,” noted Suyapa Ball, Revivicor’s head of porcine technology and farm operations. “You have to give them a good life. They’re giving their lives for us.”

United Therapeutics’ new facility in Christiansburg aims to produce up to 125 pig organs annually, with the potential for even larger facilities in the future. The company envisions scaling up to produce up to 2,000 organs per year across multiple locations.

As research progresses, the field of xenotransplantation remains cautiously optimistic. “The next two or three years are going to be super exciting,” Ayares said. The hope is that these advancements will eventually lead to a new era of organ transplantation, addressing the critical shortage of human donors and saving countless lives.

Pope Francis urges Olympic truce and prays for global peace

VATICAN CITY. Pope Francis on Sunday called for an Olympic truce among warring nations, hoping that the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games would inspire a pause in conflicts by an ancient Greek tradition.

During his Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis stated, “According to ancient tradition, may the Olympics be an opportunity to establish a truce in wars, demonstrating a sincere will for peace.” He highlighted the unique potential of sports to unite people from diverse backgrounds, emphasizing their “great social power” to foster peace.

The 33rd Olympic Games are set to begin in Paris on July 26, with 205 delegations of athletes expected to participate in the opening ceremony, which will feature a grand parade on more than 80 boats along the Seine River. The Pope expressed his hope that the Games would symbolize a world striving for inclusivity and that athletes would serve as “messengers of peace and valuable models for the young.”

In his address, the Pope also urged the faithful to pray for peace, acknowledging ongoing global conflicts. “Let us not forget the martyred Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Myanmar, and many other countries at war,” he said. “Let us not forget, war is a defeat,” he concluded, reinforcing his call for a global commitment to peace.

Cyprus celebrates the return of looted artifacts

NICOSIA, Cyprus. Cyprus proudly unveiled a collection of ancient artifacts on Monday that were recently returned after being looted decades ago by a Turkish art dealer. These items, which span thousands of years of history, were displayed at the country’s archaeological museum.

The artifacts were taken by Aydin Dikmen from Cyprus’ Turkish-occupied north in the aftermath of the island’s division in 1974, following Turkey’s invasion after a coup by Greek unionists. The antiquities, which had been seized in Germany in 1997, were repatriated in three stages, with the final batch returned this year after prolonged legal battles.

In a speech at the unveiling ceremony, President Nikos Christodoulides highlighted the broader implications of cultural theft, stating, “The destruction of a country’s cultural heritage, as evidenced in recent conflicts, becomes a deliberate campaign of cultural and religious cleansing that aims to eliminate identity.”

Among the 60 newly returned artifacts showcased were jewelry from the Chalcolithic Period (3500-1500 B.C.) and Bronze Age bird-shaped idols. Additionally, previously returned items include 1,500-year-old mosaics depicting Saints Luke, Mark, Matthew, and James. These mosaics are some of the rare early Christian artworks that survived the Iconoclastic period of the 8th and 9th centuries when many similar works were destroyed.

Cyprus, in collaboration with the Orthodox Church, has been actively searching for looted antiquities and relics from up to 500 churches over the years. The museum’s antiquities curator, Eftychia Zachariou, noted that recent changes in international attitudes towards repatriation have significantly benefited Cyprus. “In recent years, we have seen a shift in thinking among authorities in many countries who now opt to repatriate antiquities of dubious provenance,” she said.

The repatriation of these artifacts marks a significant victory in Cyprus’ ongoing efforts to recover its cultural heritage and address the injustices of past looting.

Kamala Harris earns sufficient delegate support for presidential nomination

0

ATLANTA. Vice President Kamala Harris has secured enough delegate support to officially become the Democratic nominee for the upcoming presidential election, following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race on Sunday. Harris will mark her debut as a presidential candidate with a campaign event in Wisconsin on Tuesday.

Biden’s exit, prompted by a decline in support and internal party strife, paved the way for Harris, who now leads with over 2,500 delegates—surpassing the 1,976 required to secure the nomination. Harris confirmed her status as the presumptive nominee on Monday night, stating, “Tonight, I am proud to have secured the broad support needed to become our party’s nominee. I look forward to formally accepting the nomination soon.”

An unofficial survey by the Associated Press confirmed Harris’s lead, with no other candidate receiving votes. Despite the possibility of delegate changes, Harris is firmly positioned as the nominee, with only 54 delegates remaining undecided.

Harris, who previously served as California’s Attorney General, will use her visit to Wisconsin to appeal to voters in critical Rust-Belt states, which include Michigan and Pennsylvania. She is scheduled to speak at a political event in Milwaukee at 1:05 p.m. CDT (1805 GMT). During her address, Harris will emphasize her prosecutorial experience, stating, “So hear me when I say I know Donald Trump’s type,” referring to her record of pursuing “predators” and “fraudsters.”

The Wisconsin trip is seen as a key opportunity for Harris to reset the campaign narrative and demonstrate her capability to challenge Republican rival Donald Trump. Paul Kendrick, executive director of the Democratic group Rust Belt Rising, noted, “There are independents and young people who did not like their choices, and Harris has a chance to win them.”

In addition to securing the nomination, Harris has seen a significant boost in fundraising, amassing $81 million since Biden’s departure. This figure is nearly equivalent to the $95 million the Biden campaign had at the end of June. Prominent Hollywood figures, including Cardi B, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Shonda Rhimes, have endorsed Harris and contributed to her campaign.

Trump and his allies have criticized Harris, linking her policies to Biden’s unpopular decisions, particularly on immigration. Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung described Harris’s record as one of “complete failure and utter incompetence,” asserting, “Her policies are Biden’s policies, and vice versa.”

The nomination also sparks speculation about potential vice presidential picks, with names such as Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer among those considered.

As Harris prepares for her campaign in Wisconsin, her ability to energize key voter demographics and address past criticisms will be crucial in the upcoming election.

Netanyahu hints at potential breakthrough in hostage deal as Gaza conflict intensifies

JERUSALEM/CAIRO. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has suggested that a deal to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza could be imminent, according to his office. The announcement comes amid ongoing fierce clashes in the besieged Palestinian territory.

As fighting continues, Israeli forces have intensified their operations in Khan Younis, Gaza’s southern region, following an evacuation order for civilians from areas targeted for renewed attacks by Palestinian militants. Thousands have been displaced as Israeli airstrikes bombard the region, according to U.N. officials.

Netanyahu, currently in Washington, is scheduled to meet U.S. President Joe Biden later this week after addressing Congress. On Monday, during a meeting with hostage families in the U.S. capital, Netanyahu stated, “The conditions (for a deal) are undoubtedly ripening. This is a good sign.”

The efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which have gained traction over the past month, were initially outlined by Biden in May and are mediated by Egypt and Qatar. Netanyahu noted, “Unfortunately, it will not take place all at once; there will be stages. However, I believe that we can advance the deal and leave us in possession of the leverage to bring about the release of the others (hostages not freed in the first stage).”

Ruby Chen, father of Itai Chen, a dual U.S.-Israeli citizen whose body is held in Gaza, was among those who met Netanyahu. Chen expressed cautious optimism, saying, “He did say that conditions were ripening but I’m taking that with a pinch of salt.” Chen also voiced hope that Biden would exert more pressure on Netanyahu to finalize the deal, especially following Biden’s recent withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race and endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris.

However, senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri dismissed Netanyahu’s statements, asserting, “Netanyahu is still stalling and he is sending delegations only to calm down the anger of families of Israeli captives.”

A scheduled Israeli negotiation team will resume talks on Thursday, focusing on a possible exchange of hostages for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. During a brief ceasefire in November, 105 hostages were released in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners.

The hostages were initially taken during a Hamas raid on southern Israel on October 7, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and about 250 captives, according to Israeli figures. Currently, around 120 hostages remain in captivity, with a third declared dead in absentia by Israeli authorities.

The retaliatory Israeli offensive has resulted in over 39,000 Palestinian deaths, according to Gaza health officials. The conflict has caused mass displacement, with hundreds of thousands of people forced to flee, and widespread destruction in the enclave.

In Gaza, Israeli airstrikes hit Khan Younis on Tuesday, with ongoing clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinian militants. The U.N.’s Palestinian refugee agency, UNRWA, reported, “Thousands of people on the move again, fleeing strikes & military operations. The situation is impossible. The cycle of fear & displacement has gone on too long. Everyone is exhausted.”

The Israeli military reported killing dozens of militants in Khan Younis and destroying weapon caches and tunnels. Palestinian medics reported one death from an airstrike on Tuesday, following multiple casualties from Monday’s attacks. In Gaza City, 16 people were killed in Israeli bombings, and two Palestinians were killed in Rafah, where ongoing clashes with Israeli forces continue.
