Movie review: ‘Skywalkers: A love story’ – High-rise romance or social media stunt?

“Skywalkers: A Love Story,” debuting this Friday on Netflix, is an intriguing yet superficial documentary about two Russian social media influencers who find love and fame by scaling urban skyscrapers. The film follows Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, a Moscow couple who risk their lives for the perfect Instagram post, but the depth of their relationship often feels lost amid the self-promotion.

Nikolau and Beerkus, both with athletic backgrounds, engage in a high-wire romance that unfolds atop some of the world’s tallest structures. The documentary, directed by Jeff Zimbalist and co-directed by Maria Bukhonina, begins with an ominous warning about the dangerous and illegal activities depicted, urging viewers not to imitate their stunts.

The couple’s relationship starts with an invitation to climb a structure in China. Beerkus, the more experienced climber, seeks new ways to captivate his sponsors, while Nikolau, a former acrobat, quickly adapts to the world of “rooftopping.” As they travel and their social media fame grows, their photos of kissing on high-rise edges go viral, boosting their popularity. Despite their claims of aspiring to “art,” the images they create often resemble screensavers more than artistic expressions.

“Skywalkers” follows the couple through their global adventures, offering glimpses of their practical tips for staying safe, like never lingering on a rooftop for more than 15 minutes—a lesson learned after causing a commotion atop Notre Dame. They typically infiltrate construction sites by posing as workers, and while the ascent is perilous, they find that no one questions them on the way down.

The film’s climax centers on their attempt to scale Malaysia’s Merdeka super-skyscraper, a particularly challenging endeavor. The structure of “Skywalkers” echoes that of James Marsh’s acclaimed “Man on Wire,” which detailed Philippe Petit’s high-wire walk between the Twin Towers in 1974. However, “Skywalkers” lacks the romanticism and depth of “Man on Wire,” leaving viewers without a profound understanding of either Nikolau or Beerkus. Their interactions often seem scripted, diminishing the authenticity of their connection.

For a more genuine and poetic exploration of high-stakes climbing, viewers might prefer Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin’s “Free Solo,” which documents Alex Honnold’s ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite. Unlike the passion-driven Petit and Honnold, Nikolau and Beerkus appear more enamored with their selfie sticks than the heights they conquer.

“Skywalkers: A Love Story,” rated R by the Motion Picture Association for language, has a running time of 100 minutes and earns one and a half stars out of four.

106 rare Siamese crocodile eggs discovered in Cambodia, biggest find in 20 years

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia. Conservationists have discovered 106 eggs of the critically endangered Siamese crocodile in a wildlife sanctuary in western Cambodia, marking the largest find of its kind in two decades. This significant discovery brings renewed hope for the survival of one of the world’s rarest crocodile species.

The eggs were found in May in Cardamom National Park. Between June 27 and 30, 60 of these eggs successfully hatched, according to a joint statement issued by Cambodia’s ministries of agriculture and environment, along with the conservation group Fauna & Flora.

“This discovery indicates that the area is a key habitat for wild crocodiles, providing hope for the species’ recovery,” the statement said. Rangers now protect the newly hatched crocodiles and their habitat from Cardamom National Park Wildlife Sanctuary.

Once widespread across Southeast Asia, the Siamese crocodile is now listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The species faced near extinction by the 1990s due to poaching, habitat destruction, and crossbreeding with other crocodile species.

Cambodian Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth emphasized the importance of conservation efforts for these critically endangered reptiles. “The Siamese crocodiles play an important role in the ecosystem and the discovery of the five nests successfully hatching 60 eggs reflects that the Cardamom National Park is a safe and suitable habitat for this species,” Sophalleth stated on Thursday.

Currently, it is believed that only about 1,000 Siamese crocodiles remain in the wild, with over 300 of them residing in Cambodia. In recent years, there have been other hopeful signs for the species. In 2017, researchers discovered six eggs in the Sre Ambel district of Koh Kong province. Later, in September 2021, conservationists found eight hatchlings in the Srepok Wildlife Sanctuary in eastern Cambodia, further raising hopes for the species’ survival.

The discovery of these 106 eggs in Cardamom National Park is a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to conserve and restore the habitat of the Siamese crocodile, ensuring their continued presence in the wild.

Ursula von der Leyen re-elected as EU Commission president for a second term

0

STRASBOURG. Ursula von der Leyen has secured a second term as President of the European Commission after committing to establish a “defense union” and maintain Europe’s green transition while easing its impact on industry.

Members of the European Parliament voted in favor of von der Leyen’s re-election, with 401 votes for and 284 against, in a secret ballot held in the 720-member chamber.

In her address to the Parliament in Strasbourg, von der Leyen, 65, outlined a program centered on prosperity and security, influenced by the challenges posed by Russia’s war in Ukraine, global economic competition, and climate change.

“The next five years will define Europe’s place in the world for the next five decades. It will decide whether we shape our own future or let it be shaped by events or by others,” von der Leyen stated before the vote.

She emphasized the importance of adhering to the “Green Deal” transformation of the EU economy to combat climate change, a crucial promise for Green lawmakers who joined her coalition of center-right, center-left, and liberal groups in supporting her.

After promising to support Ukraine indefinitely in its conflict with Russia, von der Leyen stressed that Europe’s freedom was at risk and that increased investment in defense was necessary.

When asked about the potential impact of a protectionist and isolationist U.S. administration under Donald Trump, von der Leyen said the EU was focused on “reducing our dependencies” regardless of external elections. “We will work closely with our friends and allies, that is absolutely clear,” she told reporters. “But that does also include that we are building our own strength.”

Defence and Climate Commitments

Von der Leyen, a former German defense minister, committed to creating “a true European Defence Union” with key projects in air and cyber defense. This proposal drew criticism from the Kremlin, which described it as indicative of “militarisation (and) confrontation.”

In her speech, she also criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s recent visit to Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, calling it an “appeasement mission” and receiving broad applause from lawmakers.

Traditionally, defense policy has been managed by national governments and NATO. However, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and uncertainties regarding U.S. protection should Trump be re-elected, the European Commission aims to promote more joint European defense initiatives.

Von der Leyen also committed to ambitious climate policies, including a legally binding EU target to reduce emissions by 90% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels. She promised new measures to help European industries remain competitive while reducing emissions.

Securing Support

The support of the Greens was pivotal in von der Leyen’s comfortable victory. She needed 361 votes to secure a majority, and her core coalition provided 401 seats. Despite expectations that some coalition members might vote against her in the secret ballot, her re-election was assured.

She also pledged stricter EU border controls and enhanced police cooperation against crime. However, these measures did not win the backing of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing Brothers of Italy party, which voted against her.

Von der Leyen’s re-election ensures continuity within the EU’s key institution during a period of external and internal challenges, including rising support for far-right and eurosceptic parties within the 27-nation bloc.

In the coming weeks, von der Leyen will propose her team of commissioners, who will face individual hearings from lawmakers before a final vote on the entire Commission later this year.

Netanyahu’s surprise visit to southern Gaza ahead of U.S. Congress speech

JERUSALEM. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made an unexpected visit to troops in southern Gaza on Thursday, just days before his scheduled speech to the U.S. Congress. Netanyahu’s visit to Rafah came shortly after Israel’s far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, visited Jerusalem’s most sensitive holy site, potentially complicating ongoing Gaza cease-fire talks.

Earlier in the day, Ben-Gvir, an ultranationalist settler leader, visited the contested Jerusalem hilltop compound of Al-Aqsa Mosque. He stated he was there to pray for the return of hostages “but without a reckless deal, without surrendering.” His actions risk disrupting delicate negotiations aimed at reaching a cease-fire in the nine-month-old Israel-Hamas conflict. Israeli negotiators had arrived in Cairo on Wednesday to continue these talks.

Standing in front of the golden dome of Al-Aqsa Mosque, Ben-Gvir declared, “I am praying and working hard to ensure that Netanyahu will not give in to international pressure and will continue with the military campaign in Gaza.” Ben-Gvir’s visit in May to protest against unilateral recognitions of Palestinian statehood had also drawn significant controversy.

Ben-Gvir, who has been convicted eight times for offenses including racism and supporting a terrorist organization, now oversees the country’s police force as security minister. As a key coalition partner, he holds significant sway, capable of undermining Netanyahu’s parliamentary majority and potentially triggering early elections. He has been pushing Netanyahu to continue the war in Gaza despite widespread calls for a cease-fire.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned Ben-Gvir’s visit as a “provocative intrusion” that endangered the fragile status quo of the Jerusalem hilltop compound, revered by Jews as the Temple Mount and by Muslims as Haram al-Sharif. Tensions over this site have historically fueled violence.

In an overnight session that extended into Thursday morning, Israel’s parliament passed a resolution rejecting the establishment of a Palestinian state, a symbolic vote intended to send a message ahead of Netanyahu’s U.S. visit.

The U.N.’s International Court of Justice is expected to issue an advisory opinion on the legality of Israel’s 57-year occupation of Palestinian territories on Friday, a separate legal matter from the current Israel-Hamas conflict.

Overnight Israeli airstrikes in central Gaza killed at least 11 people, including two children and two women, according to the Hamas-run Civil Defense organization and local hospitals. Israel’s military claimed the strikes targeted senior commanders from the militant Palestinian group Islamic Jihad and other groups responsible for attacks on northern Israel.

The war in Gaza, sparked by Hamas’ October 7 attack on southern Israel, has resulted in over 38,600 deaths, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between combatants and civilians. The conflict has created a humanitarian crisis, displacing most of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents and causing widespread hunger.

Hamas’ attack in October killed 1,200 people, primarily civilians, and militants took around 250 hostages. Israeli authorities report that about 120 hostages remain in captivity, with approximately a third believed to be deceased.

King Charles III bestows royal title on rare golden goat breed

LONDON. King Charles III has bestowed a royal title on the rare Golden Guernsey Goat breed, in a move that highlights the importance of biodiversity and rare breeds. The breed, known for its connection to the island of Guernsey, will now carry the special title of Royal Golden Guernsey Goat. This honor was granted on Tuesday during the king’s visit to the island in the English Channel.

“Hopefully, this will raise awareness for the breed,” said Rebecca Martin, the owner of eight-year-old Summerville Tamsin, the goat chosen to represent the breed. As he bestowed the honor, King Charles petted the small creature and complimented the shade of its pale blond coat.

The Golden Guernsey Goats are a rare breed and are listed as “at risk” on the Rare Breeds Watchlist. Known for their friendly and docile nature, they are also valued for their good milk production.

Christopher Price, the chief executive of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, emphasized the significance of this recognition. “The honor offers recognition of the breed’s historical significance and its value to biodiversity, the environment, and sustainable food production,” Price said in a statement. “Being choosy in what they eat, their grazing can provide very specific environmental benefits. We are extremely grateful to His Majesty for his continued, greatly valued support for British rare native livestock and equine breeds.”

Cyanide traces were found in the blood of deceased Vietnamese and Americans at a Bangkok hotel

0

BANGKOK. Traces of cyanide have been detected in the blood of six Vietnamese and American guests found dead at a luxury hotel in central Bangkok. Thai authorities revealed Wednesday that initial autopsy results indicate one of the victims may have poisoned the others due to a bad investment.

The bodies were discovered on Tuesday at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, a prominent hotel located in a bustling area filled with malls, government buildings, and public transit. The six victims were last seen alive when food was delivered to their room on Monday afternoon. Staff observed a woman receiving the food, and security footage showed the others arriving shortly after. No other visitors were recorded, and the room was locked from the inside. A maid discovered the bodies on Tuesday afternoon when the group failed to check out.

Hotel staff reported that the food ordered the previous day was left untouched, with servings of fried rice still under plastic wrap. However, several used teacups were found on a nearby table, next to two thermos bottles.

The autopsies, conducted at Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn Hospital, revealed cyanide in the blood of all six victims. Kornkiat Vongpaisarnsin, head of the forensic medicine department at Chulalongkorn University’s medical school, stated at a news conference that the presence of cyanide and the absence of blunt force trauma suggested poisoning.

Chulalongkorn’s dean of medicine, Chanchai Sittipunt, confirmed that the cyanide was likely the cause of death. Bangkok police chief Lt. Gen. Thiti Sangsawang identified the deceased as two Vietnamese Americans and four Vietnamese nationals, comprising three men and three women aged between 37 and 56. The police indicated that the incident appeared personal and would not affect tourist safety.

Noppasin Punsawat, Bangkok deputy police chief, mentioned that a husband and wife among the dead had invested approximately 10 million baht ($278,000) with two others in the group, which could be a motive. The investment was reportedly for a hospital in Japan, and the group might have been meeting to resolve the issue. Police suggested that one individual poisoned the others but did not specify which of the six was responsible.

Lt. Gen. Thiti Sangsawang reported that four bodies were found in the living room and two in the bedroom, with two victims appearing to have attempted to reach the door. Noppasin also mentioned that a seventh person associated with the hotel booking, a sibling of one of the victims, left Thailand on July 10 and is not considered involved in the deaths.

The Vietnamese and United States embassies have been informed, and the FBI is en route to assist, according to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller expressed condolences and stated that the U.S. is closely monitoring the situation and communicating with local authorities.

The five-star Grand Hyatt Erawan is a landmark hotel in Bangkok, near the Erawan Shrine, a major tourist attraction. The shrine, erected in 1956, was the target of a 2015 bombing that killed 20 people and injured over 100. In 2023, Thailand faced reports of a serial killer, Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn, who poisoned 15 people with cyanide, killing at least 14.

Suspek sa pagpatay sa mag-asawang Australian at kamag-anak sa Tagaytay, sumuko

0

TAGAYTAY CITY.
