Rep. Castro at Satur Ocampo, nahatulang guilty sa child abuse

0

MAYNILA. Hinatulang guilty ng Tagum Regional Trial Court sa Tagum City sina ACT Teachers Party-list Rep. France Castro at dating Bayan Muna Party-list Rep.

“Records reveal that the prosecution has established proof beyond reasonable doubt that the accused… committed acts detrimental to the safety and well-being of the minor Lumad learners,” ayon sa desisyon ng korte.

Gayunman, inabswelto ng korte ang mga kapwa akusado na sina Pastor Edgar Ugal, Rev. Ryan Magpayo, Eller Ordeniza, at Rev.

Pope Francis urges prayers and efforts to combat declining numbers of priests and nuns

ROME. On Monday, Pope Francis called on religious orders to intensify their efforts and prayers for new priests and nuns, acknowledging the dire situation as the numbers entering Catholic religious life continue to plummet in many parts of the world.

Addressing representatives of six religious orders holding assemblies in Rome this summer, Pope Francis inquired about their current number of trainees for priesthood or religious life. Responses varied, with some reporting as few as eight, twelve, and seventeen, primarily from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

“The future is there, it’s true,” Francis remarked. “We have to double these numbers!”

For over a decade, the number of Catholic priests and nuns from Europe and parts of the Americas has been in significant decline, unable to compensate for the losses due to deaths and desertions. The influx of new priests from the Global South has somewhat mitigated the overall global decline, with 407,872 priests recorded in 2021 compared to 413,418 in 2011, according to Vatican statistics.

However, the decline in female religious orders has been more severe, losing around 10,000 members annually over the past decade. Despite some vibrant and growing communities, the total number of religious sisters worldwide dropped from 713,206 in 2011 to 608,958 in 2021.

These trends have forced some orders to disband, scale down, and sell properties to care for aging members. Some have even stopped accepting new members due to uncertain futures.

Pope Francis, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high standards for admission, urged religious superiors to be diligent in training recruits. “You have to have successors who will continue your charism,” he said, referring to the unique spirit that defines each religious order. “Pray, pray.”

Spanish rescuers discover remains believed to be missing Briton Jay Slater

MADRID. Spanish rescuers on the island of Tenerife have discovered human remains believed to be those of missing British teenager Jay Slater, who vanished nearly a month ago. The Guardia Civil police force announced on Monday that evidence strongly suggests the remains are his, though an autopsy will be required to confirm the identity and cause of death.

The remains were found in a challenging mountainous region where Slater, 19, was last traced. It is suspected that he may have died due to a fall in this difficult-to-access area. “The body was found on Monday morning by a Civil Guard mountain rescue group,” said a police spokesperson. “The family has been notified, and an autopsy will take place shortly. The case will then be transferred to a Tenerife court to determine the cause of death.”

Jay Slater went missing on June 17, with his phone last traced to the Masca ravine in a remote national park on the Canary Islands archipelago. Despite an extensive search involving dozens of officers, rescue workers, and volunteers using dogs, drones, and helicopters, Spanish police announced on June 30 that they had ended the search. However, Guardia Civil officers continued a “continuous and discrete search” for the entire 29 days.

British overseas missing persons charity LBT Global, which has issued several statements on behalf of the Slater family, confirmed in an email that the body found “looks to be that of Jay Slater.” The remains were discovered with Slater’s possessions and clothes, close to the last known location of his mobile phone.

Slater’s mother, Debbie, had expressed the family’s desperation in a statement on July 13, revealing that they had arranged for a team of experts with specialist dogs to fly in from the Netherlands over the weekend. “Jay is just a normal hardworking young lad from Lancashire who is very loved by all who know him,” she wrote, asking people to pray for him and his family.

The discovery brings a tragic end to the search for Jay Slater, highlighting the dangers of the rugged terrain in the remote parts of Tenerife. An official investigation will now proceed to determine the exact circumstances of his death.

Libong bahay nasunog sa Cavite

0

CAVITE CITY.

Cruz Elementary School.

Hamas claims Gaza cease-fire talks continue and their military chief survived an Israeli strike

GAZA STRIP, Muwasi. Hamas announced on Sunday that cease-fire negotiations remain active and that their military commander, Mohammed Deif, is alive and well, following an Israeli airstrike aimed at him. The attack, reported by local health officials to have killed at least 90 people, including children, left Deif’s condition unclear.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Saturday night, “there still isn’t absolute certainty” about Deif’s death. Israeli Army Chief Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi confirmed the strike on Deif’s hideout but noted, “It’s still too early to summarize the results of the attack, which Hamas is trying to hide.”

Hamas, without providing evidence, maintained that Deif survived. His potential death would be the highest-profile assassination of a Hamas leader since the war began. Deif, a top target for Israel, has been in hiding for years.

The Israeli military reported that Rafa Salama, a close associate of Deif and commander of Hamas’ Khan Younis brigade, was killed in the strike. Netanyahu emphasized that all Hamas leaders are “marked for death” and suggested that their elimination could push Hamas toward accepting a cease-fire.

Despite the intense conflict, Hamas spokesperson Jihad Taha stated that mediated cease-fire discussions continue. “There is no doubt that the horrific massacres will impact any efforts in the negotiations,” he said, but added that “efforts and endeavors of the mediators remain ongoing.”

Communication channels between Hamas leaders inside and outside Gaza remain functional, despite the airstrike in southern Gaza, an area designated by Israel as safe for displaced Palestinians. Survivors expressed outrage at the attack’s location, with Mahmoud Abu Yaseen, who lost his son, asking, “Where do we go?”

A United Nations official reported chaos at Nasser hospital, with Scott Anderson describing, “I saw toddlers who are double amputees, children paralyzed and unable to receive treatment and others separated from their parents.” He highlighted that restrictions on humanitarian aid to Gaza hinder necessary medical and other care.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant praised the strike’s pilots, claiming Hamas is weakening daily, with diminished capacity to arm, organize, or “care for the wounded.” The airstrike, one of the deadliest in the nine-month conflict, injured at least 300 people. The war, ignited by Hamas’ October 7 assault on southern Israel, has resulted in around 1,200 Israeli deaths, mostly civilians, and over 200 hostages taken.

Gaza’s Health Ministry reported over 38,400 deaths from Israeli ground offensives and airstrikes since the conflict began. The ministry’s figures do not distinguish between combatants and civilians.

On Sunday, an Israeli strike in Nuseirat killed at least 14 people, including children, at a school gate used as a shelter. An Israeli military statement claimed it targeted “terrorists” near a U.N. school.

Additionally, a Palestinian from east Jerusalem carried out a car-ramming attack in central Israel, injuring four Israelis. Israeli border police shot the attacker dead. Israeli Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai indicated such attacks are often provoked by events like the Gaza airstrike.

Rethinking rebranding

Listen to some excerpts from the State of the Nation Address (SONA) in 2022:

(1)   “Tourism is not only an important economic development tool but the abundance of opportunities that the sector creates in terms of regular employment and even job creation at the grassroots level is undeniable.”

(2)   “To boost our tourism industry, we will first and foremost make basic developments such as road improvements for easier access to tourism spots. We will also upgrade our airports and create more international airports to help decongest the bottleneck at the Manila International Airport.”

(3)   “They say, each brand has a story. As for the Filipino brand, ours is deeply rooted in our rich cultural heritage and the tourism sector plays an invaluable role in the promotion of the Filipino brand.”

(4)   “To foster the Filipino brand is to spark our sense of pride and reaffirm our strong sense of identity. It is time to welcome the rest of the world with an enhanced Filipino brand that is unique, attractive, and creative.”

Me: The Chief Executive had the right to make such bold pronouncements. The onus of communication scholars can be found in passages 3 and 4, while the Secretary of Tourism had the major duty to understand the assignments found in passages 1 and 2 and, of course, she was one of the key leaders who should have arranged for their perfect execution in case she understood her assignments. Now, for the now:

In the course of eight presidencies, we have kept on implementing a few more brands and strategies in communicating them, and, in the process, the strategies do not become part of the equation for problem-solving but part of calculating what the strategies add to the successful accumulation of resources in greedy politics. In rethinking rebranding, there may be attempts to communicate the never-ending development goals. Still, we must remember that we truly need to exert more concrete efforts in accomplishing governmental tasks, chief of which is combating poverty in all its forms.

We did not have significant progress last year – Marcos Jr.’s first year in office – if we carefully listened to the 2023 SONA. Is that the reason why the Vice President is not attending his important address this year? What a significant move in politicking. Is there a reason for her absence and how significant (very petrifying, very Netflix?) was the statement she made about it? Meanwhile, we are mislaying our ability to attract investment and are easily blaming people outside of the government instead of the lack of unified action from within.

Twelve months ago, this column asserted that selling the country to tourists (and foreign investors) is “madaling sabihin, mahirap gawin” (easy to say, hard to do), but many Filipinos are doing it anyway like my friends Kate and Marvin. I wrote that the kind of love of the country they possess, including their related endeavors, does not cost the public treasury. Let us not make that confidential. That is how leading is done when we are not in the positions of leadership. Tayo ang Palawan at Boracay. We all are.

The Bastille Day Parade merges with the Olympic Torch Relay during Paris’s preparations for the Olympics

PARIS. France’s Bastille Day celebrations took on an Olympic flair this year as Paris welcomed the symbolic Olympic flame to its grandiose military parade on Sunday, just days before the city hosts the Summer Games under tight security.

The parade, a highlight of the national holiday marking the storming of the Bastille fortress in 1789, featured a unique blend of military prowess and Olympic spirit. The torch relay joined thousands of soldiers, sailors, rescuers, and medics marching through Paris, accompanied by roaring fighter jets overhead.

While festivities across France included concerts, parties, and fireworks, the Paris parade held special significance this year:

Historical Significance: The Bastille Day commemorates the start of the French Revolution, symbolizing the ideals of ‘liberty, equality, and fraternity,’ although debates persist about whether these ideals are fully realized in modern France.

D-Day Tribute: This year’s parade honored those who liberated France from Nazi occupation 80 years ago, featuring a re-enactment of the D-Day landings and participation from service members of 31 nations, including former French colonies in Africa.

Military Participation: Around 4,000 participants, including 162 horses, showcased their skills in a meticulously choreographed display. Units from NATO missions in Europe, counter-terrorism efforts in the Sahel, and maritime security operations were highlighted, alongside symbolic figures like the French Foreign Legion sappers.

Aircraft Display: Sixty-five aircraft flew in formations, demonstrating France’s military capabilities from multinational operations to counterterrorism missions worldwide.

Political Backdrop: For President Emmanuel Macron, the parade provided a respite from domestic political challenges, including recent elections that reshaped the parliamentary landscape amidst ongoing European security concerns over Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Olympic Integration: In a nod to the upcoming Olympics, the parade culminated with the arrival of the Olympic torch relay. The flame, escorted by riders and torchbearers adorned in the Olympic colors, passed iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral.

Venue Changes: Due to Olympic preparations, the parade’s traditional route was diverted to Bois de Boulogne Park, away from Concorde Plaza, now a hub for Olympic sports like breakdancing and skateboarding.

As Paris gears up for the Summer Games, the convergence of Bastille Day celebrations with Olympic fervor underscores France’s historical legacy and its modern ambitions on the global stage.

Wildfire rages in eastern Canada, forcing massive evacuations

0

A devastating wildfire in eastern Canada has consumed over 24,000 acres of land and prompted the evacuation of thousands from Labrador City, where significant impacts on local infrastructure have been reported, officials confirmed on Saturday.

Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, Andrew Furey, described the blaze as an “extremely aggressive inferno” that, despite being initially contained earlier in the week, rapidly expanded due to shifting weather conditions on Friday. The fire surged by 22,000 acres, advancing approximately 13 miles within just four hours.

Jeremy Reynolds, a spokesperson for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, stated that around 9,500 residents have been evacuated from Labrador City. “Essential personnel remain to manage the emergency response,” he noted.

Labrador City, situated in the province’s remote northwest, lies roughly 900 miles north of Ottawa, Canada’s capital. As the fire edges closer, residents have been directed to evacuate to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, a six-hour drive away, according to Premier Furey.

An evacuation order issued on Friday evening warned of the fire’s potential to encroach further into Labrador West over the next 24 to 48 hours. An evacuation alert has also been issued for Wabush, a neighboring community, urging residents to prepare for immediate evacuation if necessary.

Secret Service probes how gunman managed to shoot and injure Trump at rally

0

BUTLER, Pennsylvania. The U.S. Secret Service is investigating how a gunman, armed with an AR-style rifle, managed to get close enough to shoot and injure former President Donald Trump during a rally on Saturday in Pennsylvania. This incident represents a monumental failure in one of the agency’s core duties.

The gunman, identified by the FBI as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was killed by Secret Service personnel after he fired multiple shots at the stage from an “elevated position outside of the rally venue.” An analysis by the Associated Press, including over a dozen videos and photos from the rally and satellite imagery, revealed that the shooter was astonishingly close to the stage where Trump was speaking. A social media video, geolocated by the AP, shows the body of a man in gray camouflage lying motionless on the roof of a manufacturing plant north of the Butler Farm Show grounds, where Trump’s rally was held.

The roof was less than 150 meters from where Trump was speaking, a distance from which a skilled marksman could reasonably hit a human-sized target. For reference, 150 meters is the distance at which U.S. Army recruits must hit a scaled human-sized silhouette to qualify with the M16 assault rifle in basic training. The AR-15, used by the shooter at the rally, is the semi-automatic civilian version of the military M16.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek expressed surprise that the gunman was able to fire at the stage before he was neutralized. Members of the Secret Service’s counter-sniper team and counter-assault team were present at the rally, according to two law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity. The heavily-armed counter-assault team, code-named “Hawkeye,” is responsible for eliminating threats so that other agents can shield and evacuate the protected individual. The counter-sniper team, known as “Hercules,” uses long-range binoculars and sniper rifles to handle long-range threats.

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas stated that his department and the Secret Service are collaborating with law enforcement to investigate the shooting. “Maintaining the security of presidential candidates and their campaign events is one of the department’s most vital priorities,” he said. “We condemn this violence in the strongest possible terms and commend the Secret Service for their swift action today,” Mayorkas added. “We are engaged with President Biden, former President Trump, and their campaigns, and are taking every possible measure to ensure their safety and security.“

Calls for an investigation came from all sides. James Comer, a Kentucky Republican and House Oversight Committee chairman, said he contacted the Secret Service for a briefing and called on Director Kimberly Cheatle to appear for a hearing. “Political violence in all forms is unamerican and unacceptable. There are many questions and Americans demand answers,” Comer said in a statement.

U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres, a New York Democrat, also called for investigating the “security failures” at the rally. “The federal government must constantly learn from security failures to avoid repeating them, especially when those failures have implications for the nation,” Torres said.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, a Democrat, posted on X that he and his staff are in contact with security planning coordinators ahead of the Republican National Convention set to begin Monday in Milwaukee. “We cannot be a country that accepts political violence of any kind — that is not who we are as Americans,” Evers said.

The FBI announced it will lead the investigation into the shooting, working with the Secret Service and local and state law enforcement. Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that the Justice Department “will bring every available resource to bear to this investigation.” He added, “My heart is with the former President, those injured, and the family of the spectator killed in this horrific attack. We will not tolerate violence of any kind, and violence like this is an attack on our democracy.”

Who is Thomas Matthew Crooks, the alleged Trump rally shooter?

BETHEL PARK, Pennsylvania. The FBI identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspect in Saturday’s attempted assassination of former U.S. President Donald Trump at a campaign rally. Crooks was shot and killed by the Secret Service seconds after he allegedly fired shots toward the stage where Trump was speaking in Butler, Pennsylvania. The FBI is working to determine a motive for the attack, which resulted in one rally attendee’s death and two other spectators being critically injured. Trump was shot in the ear.

State voter records show that Crooks was a registered Republican. The upcoming Nov. 5 election would have been the first time Crooks was old enough to vote in a presidential race. Crooks lived about an hour away from where the shooting took place in Butler. The Federal Aviation Administration said on Sunday that it closed the airspace over Bethel Park for “special security reasons.”

When Crooks was 17, he made a $15 donation to ActBlue, a political action committee that raises money for left-leaning and Democratic politicians, according to a 2021 Federal Election Commission filing. The donation was earmarked for the Progressive Turnout Project, a national group that rallies Democrats to vote. The groups did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Crooks’ father, Matthew Crooks, 53, told CNN that he was trying to figure out what happened and would wait until he spoke to law enforcement before speaking about his son. Thomas Crooks graduated in 2022 from Bethel Park High School, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. He received a $500 “star award” from the National Math and Science Initiative, according to the newspaper. A 2022 graduation ceremony video cited by the New York Times shows Crooks receiving his high school diploma to some applause. Video from that ceremony posted online shows Crooks with glasses in a black graduation gown and posing with a school official. Reuters could not immediately verify the authenticity of the video.

Law enforcement officials said on Saturday that Crooks carried no identification to the site of the shooting and had to be identified using other methods. “We’re looking at photographs right now and we’re trying to run his DNA and get biometric confirmation,” Kevin Rojek, FBI special agent in charge, said during a press briefing. USA Today reported that dozens of law enforcement vehicles were stationed outside a residence listed at the address on Crooks’ voter registration record. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were on the scene and a bomb squad was at the residence, USA Today reported. The perimeter of the residence of the suspect was guarded on Sunday by yellow police caution tape. An Allegheny County Police vehicle was parked outside.

“It’s insanity that anyone would do this,” Dan Maloney, a 30-year-old resident from the area, was quoted as saying by USA Today. Reuters could not immediately identify social media accounts or other online postings by Crooks. Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, did not immediately respond to questions on whether the platforms had removed any accounts related to the suspect.
