Yemen’s Houthis claim to have attacked four ships at the port of Haifa in Israel

CAIRO. Four ships at Israel’s Haifa port were targeted in an apparent attack claimed by Yemen’s Houthis early on Sunday. The Houthi military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, stated that a joint military operation with the Islamic Resistance in Iraq militant group was behind the attack.

According to Saree, two cement tankers and two cargo ships at the Haifa port were targeted using drone attacks on Saturday. He mentioned that the targeted ships belonged to companies that had violated the ban on entering the ports of occupied Palestine.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the claim. Saree also stated that the Houthis had attacked the Shorthorn Express in the Mediterranean using drones as part of their campaign to disrupt shipping in key waterways, expressing solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza war.

There has been no independent confirmation of these strikes, and Reuters could not verify the claims. This incident marks a series of attacks by the Iran-aligned Houthis on shipping, including sinking two vessels, seizing another, and resulting in casualties.

Donald Sutherland, iconic actor from ‘M.A.S.H.’ to ‘The Hunger Games,’ passes away at 88

NEW YORK. Donald Sutherland, the Canadian actor renowned for his distinctive and compelling screen presence across a career spanning more than five decades, has died at the age of 88. Sutherland passed away on Thursday in Miami after a prolonged illness, as confirmed by a statement from Creative Artists Agency, which represented him.

Kiefer Sutherland, his son, paid tribute on X, calling his father “one of the most important actors in the history of film,” and adding, “Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that.”

Standing tall and with a signature grin that could be either charming or menacing, Donald Sutherland was celebrated for his portrayals of quirky and offbeat characters. Notable roles included Hawkeye Pierce in Robert Altman’s “M.A.S.H.,” the eccentric tank commander in “Kelly’s Heroes,” and the stoned professor in “Animal House.”

“Donald was a giant, not only physically but as a talent,” said Elliott Gould, Sutherland’s co-star in “M.A.S.H.,” in a statement to The Associated Press. “He was also enormously kind and generous.”

Sutherland’s career encapsulated the spirit of the unpredictable, anti-establishment cinema of the 1970s, yet he seamlessly transitioned into a respected character actor. He appeared in nearly 200 films and series, showcasing his range in roles like those in Robert Redford’s “Ordinary People” and Oliver Stone’s “JFK.” More recently, he became known to a new generation as President Snow in “The Hunger Games” franchise.

In a 1998 interview with Charlie Rose, Sutherland expressed his passion for acting, saying, “I love to work. I passionately love to work. I love to feel my hand fit into the glove of some other character. I feel a huge freedom — time stops for me. I’m not as crazy as I used to be, but I’m still a little crazy.”

Born in St. John, New Brunswick, Sutherland was the son of a salesman and a mathematics teacher. He was raised in Nova Scotia and had his own radio station at age 14. Reflecting on his youth, Sutherland once told The New York Times, “When I was 13 or 14, I really thought everything I felt was wrong and dangerous, and that God was going to kill me for it.”

Sutherland began his academic career as an engineering student at the University of Toronto but switched to English and started acting in school theatrical productions. After graduating in 1956, he studied acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and started appearing in West End plays and British television.

His big break came with “The Dirty Dozen” (1967), followed by his star-making turn in “M.A.S.H.” (1970). Despite initial disagreements with director Robert Altman, the film’s success helped catapult Sutherland to stardom.

Sutherland’s off-screen life included a passionate involvement in anti-war activism, co-founding the Free Theater Associates in 1971 with Jane Fonda and others to perform politically charged theater near military bases in Southeast Asia.

Throughout his career, Sutherland worked with many of the era’s top directors, including Federico Fellini, Bernardo Bertolucci, Claude Chabrol, and John Schlesinger. One of his finest performances was in Alan Pakula’s “Klute” (1971), where he starred opposite Jane Fonda.

Despite never being nominated for an Academy Award, Sutherland received an honorary Oscar in 2017 and won an Emmy for the TV film “Citizen X” in 1995. He also received two Golden Globes for “Citizen X” and the 2003 TV film “Path to War.”

Sutherland’s stage debut in New York in 1981, playing Humbert Humbert in Edward Albee’s adaptation of “Lolita,” was poorly received, leading to a difficult period in the 1980s. However, he continued to work steadily, especially in television.

To younger audiences, Sutherland is best remembered as President Snow in “The Hunger Games” series, a role he actively sought out. “The role of the president had maybe a line in the script. Maybe two. Didn’t make any difference,” Sutherland told GQ. “I thought it was an incredibly important film, and I wanted to be a part of it.”

Donald Sutherland leaves behind his wife, actress Francine Racette, and their three children, Roeg, Rossif, and Angus Redford. His legacy includes a memoir, “Made Up, But Still True,” set for release in November.

Reflecting on his long and varied career, Sutherland once mused about his own death on screen. “I’m really hoping that in some movie I’m doing, I die — but I die, me, Donald — and they’re able to use my funeral and the coffin,” he told the AP. “That would be absolutely ideal. I would love that.”

Philippines opts against invoking US defense pact over South China Sea incident

0

MANILA. The Philippines decided not to invoke its mutual defense treaty with the United States following an incident involving China in the disputed South China Sea, officials said on Friday.

A serious injury was sustained by a Philippine sailor after what the military described as an “intentional high-speed ramming” by the Chinese Coast Guard on Monday. The incident aimed to disrupt a resupply mission for troops stationed on the Second Thomas Shoal.

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, who chairs the national maritime council, suggested that the confrontation between Philippine navy sailors and the Chinese coast guard might have been a misunderstanding or an accident. “We are not yet ready to classify this as an armed attack,” Bersamin stated during a briefing. “I think this is a matter that can easily be resolved by us, and if China wants to work with us, we can work with China.”

China’s foreign ministry countered the Philippines’ version of events, with a spokesperson asserting on Thursday that the measures taken were lawful, professional, and beyond reproach. The Chinese embassy in Manila has not yet responded to requests for comment.

The Philippines holds a mutual defense treaty with the United States, and U.S. officials, including President Joe Biden, have repeatedly reaffirmed their “ironclad” defense commitments to the Philippines against any attack on its aircraft and vessels in the South China Sea.

In a call with the Philippines’ foreign minister on Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the United States’ steadfast commitments under the Mutual Defense Treaty. However, invoking the treaty was not considered during discussions, said Andres Centino, a presidential assistant for maritime concerns.

The national maritime council recommended to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. that resupply missions to the disputed shoal should be announced in advance and continue to be “scheduled regularly.”

Ancient 3,300-year-old ship and cargo unearthed off Northern Israel coast

TEL AVIV, Israel. A natural gas company drilling off the coast of northern Israel has uncovered a 3,300-year-old ship and its cargo, shedding new light on the advanced navigation skills of ancient mariners. The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) announced the remarkable find on Thursday, noting its significance as one of the oldest known examples of a ship navigating far from land.

The late Bronze Age vessel was discovered by Energean, a company operating deep-sea natural gas fields in Israel’s territorial waters. The ship was located approximately 90 kilometers (55 miles) off Israel’s Mediterranean coast at a depth of 1,800 meters (1.1 miles). The IAA highlighted that such a deep and remote discovery suggests ancient seafarers had more sophisticated navigation abilities than previously believed, as they could travel without a line of sight to land.

“The discovery of this boat now changes our entire understanding of ancient mariner abilities. It is the very first to be found at such a great distance with no line of sight to any landmass,” said Jacob Sharvit, head of the IAA marine unit. He added that while two similar ships from the same era had been found previously, those were discovered close to shore.

Sharvit explained that until now, researchers assumed trade during that period was conducted by boats sailing close to the shore, keeping land in sight while moving from port to port. The sailors of the newly discovered boat likely navigated using the sun and stars.

Energean uses a submersible robot to scour the sea floor as part of its operations. About a year ago, the robot encountered the 12 to 14 meter (39 to 45 foot) long ship, buried under the muddy bottom and nestled beneath hundreds of ancient jugs. These jugs, believed to be Canaanite, were likely used for carrying oil, wine, or fruit.

The ship’s intact condition is attributed to the great depth at which it was found, having remained undisturbed by waves, currents, or fishermen over the millennia. The IAA noted that the vessel appeared to have sunk either due to a storm or an attack by pirates.

For now, the ship remains underwater. However, Energean collaborated with the IAA to retrieve two of the jugs, bringing them to the surface for further research.

This discovery not only enhances our understanding of ancient maritime trade but also provides a unique glimpse into the capabilities of Bronze Age sailors who ventured far from the safety of the coastline.

MAYNILA.

Vietnam signals readiness for diplomatic talks with Philippines over South China Sea dispute

0

HANOI, Vietnam. Vietnam has expressed its willingness to engage in discussions with the Philippines to resolve overlapping claims to the continental shelf in the South China Sea. This diplomatic gesture comes as a notable contrast to China’s increasingly assertive measures to reinforce its claims in the contested waters.

Vietnam’s Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Pham Thu Hang, announced on Thursday that Vietnam is prepared to enter into negotiations with the Philippines to find a mutually beneficial solution. “Vietnam stays ready to discuss with the Philippines to seek and achieve a solution that is mutually beneficial for both countries,” she stated, as reported by the official Vietnam News Agency.

This development follows the Philippine government’s recent request to a United Nations body to formally recognize its rights to an undersea continental shelf extending from its western coast into the South China Sea. This area includes the hotly contested Spratly group of islands. If granted, this recognition would grant the Philippines exclusive rights to exploit undersea resources in the region.

The potential overlap in claims involves several coastal states, including Vietnam, due to their geographical proximity in the strategic waterway. Philippine officials have reiterated their commitment to resolving these issues through dialogue based on the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which provides legal guidelines for defining coastal states’ territorial waters.

Under UNCLOS, coastal states have exclusive rights to exploit resources within their continental shelf, which can extend up to 350 nautical miles (648 kilometers). These rights include authorizing and regulating drilling activities.

The Philippines’ Department of Foreign Affairs revealed that it submitted information to the U.N. Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf regarding its undersea shelf in the South China Sea after more than 15 years of scientific research. Antonio Lagdameo, the Philippines’ permanent representative to the U.N., highlighted the importance of this move, stating it “can reinvigorate efforts of states to demonstrate their readiness to pursue UNCLOS processes in the determination of maritime entitlements and promote a rules-based international order.”

Both Vietnam and the Philippines’ positions stand in opposition to China’s extensive claims over the South China Sea based on historical assertions. Alongside these two nations, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan also lay claims to parts of the waters, a vital global trade route.

The region has seen escalating tensions and hostilities, particularly between China and the Philippines. Incidents involving Chinese coast guard ships and suspected militia vessels using aggressive tactics against Philippine vessels have resulted in injuries, damage to boats, and heightened diplomatic strains.

In 2012, after a standoff at a disputed shoal, the Philippines took its disputes with China to international arbitration. The resulting 2016 ruling invalidated China’s extensive claims, a decision that Beijing continues to defy.

As Vietnam and the Philippines signal their readiness for dialogue, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the complex maritime disputes in the South China Sea.

Israel-Hezbollah standoff escalates, raising fears of broader conflict

JERUSALEM. A series of missile intercepts over northern Israel and fires from airstrikes in southern Lebanon signal a potential expansion of the Gaza war into a broader conflict. Analysts warn that this poses significant risks for both Israel and Hezbollah.

On Wednesday, Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah issued stark warnings, claiming that “nowhere in Israel would be safe” in the event of a war, and that even Cyprus and other Mediterranean regions could be targeted. This rhetoric heightens the already tense atmosphere, as Hezbollah has been launching rockets at Israel in solidarity with its Palestinian ally Hamas since the Gaza conflict began in October. This escalation has displaced tens of thousands in both Israel and Lebanon, intensifying political and military pressure.

U.S. President Joe Biden has responded by sending special envoy Amos Hochstein to the region for diplomatic efforts, while Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged Israeli officials to avoid further escalation. Despite these efforts, Israeli jets continued to strike southern Lebanon on Thursday, killing a Hezbollah fighter identified as a commander. Hezbollah acknowledged the death but did not confirm the commander’s rank.

Former Israeli National Security Council official Orna Mizrahi expressed concern, stating, “None of the options is good but the big question is, how much can Israel suffer under this attack?” She noted that while the Israeli government may not want a full-scale war, the situation could lead to one.

In Lebanon, Nasrallah’s threats have left many bracing for a wider conflict. However, some analysts, like Hubert Faustmann of the University of Nicosia, suggest that these threats are part of a deterrent strategy rather than an indication of an imminent war. Faustmann believes Hezbollah aims to show its capabilities without seeking a full-scale conflict.

Hezbollah has a substantial military presence, with thousands of fighters experienced in the Syrian civil war and an extensive arsenal of missiles capable of reaching major Israeli cities. They also possess a large fleet of drones, demonstrated by a recent flight over Haifa, highlighting the threat to Israel’s key infrastructure.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that Israel would respond with overwhelming force, potentially “turning Beirut into Gaza” if war breaks out. However, a larger conflict could strain Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system, which has so far intercepted most of the hundreds of missiles fired by Hezbollah.

Seth G. Jones from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in Washington remarked, “Hezbollah feels it has some leverage over the Israelis because an escalating war… would create terror in Israel.”

For weeks, Israeli commanders have been preparing for the possibility of expanded conflict in the north. The main phase of fighting in Gaza continues, with Israeli officials estimating weeks before it concludes. Despite needing rest and refitting after intense combat in Gaza, the Israeli army’s northern command has approved operational plans for an offensive in Lebanon.

Energy Minister Eli Cohen stated that the military is collaborating with energy authorities to protect Israel’s strategic electricity infrastructure, promising a strong retaliation against any attacks on it.

Lebanon’s already fragile power infrastructure, crippled by decades of poor governance and conflicts, faces further strain from the current tensions. Israel’s history in Lebanon includes a prolonged military presence after the 1982 invasion and a subsequent 2006 war initiated by Hezbollah’s capture of two Israeli soldiers.

As summer begins, political pressure on Netanyahu is mounting. With around 60,000 Israelis evacuated to temporary accommodation and empty streets in dozens of towns, the return to normalcy seems distant. Approximately 90,000 people have also fled from southern Lebanon.

Sarit Zehavi, a former Israeli military intelligence official, emphasized the enduring threat from Hezbollah, stating, “For 17 years, we did nothing against the threat and now dealing with it will cost a very high price.”

Movie Review: ‘Tuesday’ – A bold, emotional journey with Julia Louis-Dreyfus

NEW YORK. Death has taken many forms in cinema: Bengt Ekerot, Ian McKellen, John Cleese, and even Brad Pitt with blonde highlights. But in “Tuesday,” filmmaker Daina O. Pusić’s audacious, fantastical, and poignant debut, death appears as a macaw that’s seen better days.

Covered in grime and oil with missing patches of feathers, “Tuesday’s” Death can be as large as a room or as small as an ear canal. Its gravelly, ancient voice, provided by Arinzé Kene, is profoundly unsettling, offering no comforting welcome into the afterlife.

“Tuesday,” expanding nationwide Friday, explores death and acceptance between a mother and her dying daughter. However, this is no Hallmark-style sympathy card. It’s prickly, wry, somewhat unsentimental, gritty, and painfully emotional. You might find yourself in a puddle of your own tears by the film’s end.

The story introduces us to Tuesday, who, facing death, tells a joke. This disarms Death, leading to a surprising conversation. She gives Death a bath, puts on some music, and requests a favor: she wants to say goodbye to her mother first. Death obliges.

What follows is a blend of body horror, fairy tale, domestic drama, and apocalypse thriller. “Tuesday” is weird, transfixing, unpredictable, and never boring. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is both chilling and deeply empathetic as a woman paralyzed by grief even before it happens. She prepares for her own death, unable to process life without her daughter, who doesn’t realize her mother still loves her. Newcomer actress Zoe Ziegler holds her own against Louis-Dreyfus, showing a wisdom beyond her years.

“Tuesday” is ultimately a cathartic experience, addressing death in a profound way. It announces Daina O. Pusić as a daring filmmaker to watch.

“Tuesday,” an A24 release, opens in theaters nationwide on Friday. It is rated R by the Motion Picture Association for language and has a running time of 111 minutes. Three and a half stars out of four.

Teacher Rubilyn bilang DepEd Secretary?

(It is not like, “We thank her for her … <insert adjectives> service.)
