Rommel Sobrido bilang Officer in Charge ng istasyon.

Israeli forces intensify assault on Gaza as death toll in hostage rescue operation rises to 274

CAIRO. Israeli forces renewed their offensive on central Gaza on Sunday, following a deadly hostage rescue operation that claimed the lives of 274 Palestinians. Tanks advanced further into Rafah in an apparent bid to isolate parts of the southern city, according to residents and Hamas media.

Palestinians were left reeling from Saturday’s high death toll, the worst in a 24-hour period in months, which included numerous women and children, as reported by Palestinian medics. The Gaza health ministry confirmed that 274 Palestinians were killed, an increase from the 210 reported on Saturday, and 698 were injured during the Israeli commandos’ raid on the densely populated Al-Nuseirat camp to rescue four hostages held by Hamas militants since October.

The Hamas-run Gaza government media office reported that 64 children and 57 women were among the dead.

The Israeli military acknowledged the death of a special forces officer in the raid but claimed to know of “under 100” Palestinians killed, without specifying how many were fighters or civilians.

On Sunday, an Israeli airstrike on a house in Al-Bureij in central Gaza resulted in three Palestinian deaths and multiple injuries, while tanks shelled nearby areas of Al-Maghazi and Al-Nuseirat, all historic refugee camps. The Israeli military stated that its forces continued operations east of Bureij and Deir al-Balah, killing several Palestinian gunmen and destroying militant infrastructure.

Israel launched its offensive in Rafah in May, aiming to eliminate the last intact combat units of Hamas after eight months of war that left much of Gaza in ruins. Israeli tank forces have since seized the border strip with Egypt running through Rafah to the Mediterranean coast and have invaded several districts, prompting around one million displaced people to flee.

Pope Francis to host prominent comedians at the Vatican including Whoopi Goldberg

VATICAN CITY. Pope Francis is set to welcome a distinguished group of international comedians to the Vatican on Friday, June 14, the Holy See Press Office announced on Saturday. Household names such as Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, Conan O’Brien, Chris Rock, and Whoopi Goldberg will be among the attendees.

The audience, organized by the Vatican’s Dicastery for Culture and Education and the Dicastery for Communication, will take place in the Apostolic Palace at 8:30 a.m. More than 100 entertainers are expected to attend, with the event aimed at “establishing a link” between the Catholic Church and artists, according to the press release.

Promoting Joy, Peace, and Hope

The meeting aims to “celebrate the beauty of human diversity” and promote a message of peace, love, and solidarity. It “promises to be a moment of meaningful intercultural dialogue and sharing of joy and hope,” the press release noted.

Famous comedians from the United States, including Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, Conan O’Brien, Whoopi Goldberg, and Chris Rock, will be in attendance. Additionally, comedians from around the world, particularly from the UK, Ireland, and Italy, will be present, with Italians making up two-thirds of the participants.

‘Lord, Give Me a Sense of Humor’

The announcement recalled Pope Francis’s interview with the Italian TV channel TV2000, where he mentioned that he prays daily with the words of St. Thomas More, asking the Lord to grant him a sense of humor.

In the past, Pope Francis has recognized the power of comedy to foster empathy and sympathy. During a June 2023 encounter with artists in the Sistine Chapel, he observed that Scripture itself is rich in moments of irony. The Pope expressed his belief that humorists, including actors, artists, cartoonists, and writers, have “the ability to dream up new versions of the world,” often doing so “with irony, which is a wonderful virtue.”

Taal nagbuga ng 11K toneladang asupre: Mga residente, pinag-iingat

TALISAY, Batangas.

91-year-old Canadian billionaire Frank Stronach arrested on sexual assault charges

TORONTO. Austrian-Canadian auto parts billionaire Frank Stronach, 91, has been arrested on multiple sexual assault charges spanning several decades, according to police.

Peel Regional Police announced Friday that Stronach faces five charges, including rape, indecent assault on a female, sexual assault, and forcible confinement. Following his arrest, Stronach was released with conditions and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton at a later date.

“There is more than one accuser,” said Peel Regional Police Constable Tyler Bell, though he declined to specify the number of alleged victims. “Obviously, this is a high-profile case. Our special victims unit is bound to protect the victims, and in doing so, that’s why we are being vague.”

The allegations against Stronach cover incidents from the 1980s up to 2023. Bell added that police are encouraging anyone with information or who may have been a victim to come forward.

Stronach has retained prominent Canadian defense lawyer Brian Greenspan, who issued a statement denying the charges. “Mr. Stronach categorically denies the allegations of impropriety which have been brought against him,” Greenspan said. “He looks forward to the opportunity to fully respond to the charges and to maintain his legacy both as a philanthropist and as an icon of the Canadian business community.”

Stronach, originally from Austria, founded Magna International in 1957, growing it into one of the world’s largest suppliers of auto parts. He also established The Stronach Group, a company specializing in horse racing. Stronach’s brief foray into Austrian politics and his recognition as a member of the Order of Canada highlight his varied career.

A Magna spokesperson confirmed that Stronach has had no affiliation with the company since relinquishing control in 2010. “We have recently been made aware of the charges filed against Frank Stronach,” said Dave Niemiec in an email. “Magna has no knowledge of the investigation or the allegations that have been raised beyond what has been reported in the media.” Niemiec added that the company would not comment further on the ongoing legal matter.

In a separate legal issue, Stronach sued his daughter, two grandchildren, and former business associate Alon Ossip in 2018 for over $500 million, alleging mismanagement of family assets. His daughter, Belinda Stronach, a former Canadian Member of Parliament, countersued, claiming her father had lost vast sums on personal projects. The case was eventually settled.

The high-profile nature of Stronach’s case and his significant influence in business and philanthropy add a layer of complexity to the proceedings as the legal process unfolds.

Benny Gantz delays statement after hostage rescue in Gaza

JERUSALEM. Israel’s centrist war cabinet minister Benny Gantz has delayed a statement he was scheduled to give on Saturday, where he was widely expected to announce his resignation from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s emergency government.

Gantz had given the conservative prime minister a June 8 deadline to present a clear post-war strategy for Gaza, where Israel has been conducting a devastating military offensive against the ruling Palestinian militant group Hamas. However, following the news that Israeli forces had rescued four Israeli hostages alive from Gaza, Gantz’s spokespeople announced the postponement of his statement. No new time was provided for the address, which political commentators in leading Israeli newspapers anticipated would include his resignation.

The departure of Gantz’s centrist party would not immediately threaten Netanyahu’s governing coalition, which controls 64 of the 120 seats in parliament, but it could have significant implications. Without Gantz, Netanyahu would lose the support of a centrist bloc that has helped broaden the government’s base both in Israel and abroad. This loss comes at a time of increasing diplomatic and domestic pressure, eight months into the Gaza war.

Without Gantz, Netanyahu would have to rely more heavily on the support of ultra-nationalist parties. These parties, whose leaders had already angered Washington before the war, have since called for a complete Israeli reoccupation of Gaza. This shift would likely strain relations with the United States further and intensify public pressure at home, as the months-long military campaign has yet to achieve its stated goals of destroying Hamas and securing the release of the 120 remaining hostages held in Gaza.

Gantz’s exit might also signal limited prospects for success in the latest ceasefire efforts. Political analysts suggest he would have been more likely to remain if a deal seemed probable. Polls have shown Gantz, a former army commander and defense minister, to be the most formidable political rival to Netanyahu, whose image as a security hawk was damaged by the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. Gantz joined a unity government shortly after the attack, stating he was putting aside political considerations for the national interest.

Earlier on Saturday, the Israeli military announced the rescue of four hostages from Gaza. The hostages, identified as Noa Argamani, 25, Almog Meir Jan, 21, Andrey Kozlov, 27, and Shlomi Ziv, 40, were abducted during Hamas’s raid on the Nova music festival near Gaza on October 7. They were taken to a hospital for medical evaluations and reported to be in good health. The successful rescue operation adds a new dimension to the already complex political landscape in Israel.

Israel rescues four hostages in Gaza; Palestinian officials report over 50 dead in Israeli assault

JERUSALEM. The Israeli military announced on Saturday the successful rescue of four hostages in a raid in the central Gaza Strip. Simultaneously, Palestinian officials reported that an Israeli attack in the same area resulted in more than 50 fatalities.

The operations, though not confirmed as related, both took place in al-Nuseirat, a frequently contested region in the ongoing eight-month conflict between Israel and Gaza’s ruling Hamas.

The rescued hostages have been identified by the Israeli military as Noa Argamani, 25, Almog Meir Jan, 21, Andrey Kozlov, 27, and Shlomi Ziv, 40. They were promptly taken to a hospital for medical evaluations and were reported to be in good health. These individuals were abducted during Hamas’s deadly raid on the Nova music festival near Gaza on October 7, an attack that triggered the devastating war in the Hamas-controlled enclave.

In the October 7 raid, Hamas killed approximately 1,200 people, according to Israeli authorities. The subsequent Israeli bombardment and invasion of Gaza have resulted in at least 36,801 Palestinian deaths, as per the latest figures from Gaza’s health ministry on Saturday.

Initially, around 250 hostages were taken to Gaza on October 7. As of now, 116 hostages remain in Gaza, according to Israeli estimates, which include at least 40 individuals whom Israeli authorities have declared deceased.

Israeli News 12 broadcast footage showing Argamani reuniting with her father, smiling and embracing him. Video of Argamani’s kidnapping had widely circulated soon after she was dragged into Gaza by gunmen on October 7.

Earlier on Saturday, the Israeli military stated it was targeting militant infrastructure in al-Nuseirat. This announcement was unusual as the military typically does not report on ongoing operations.

Al-Nuseirat, a historic Palestinian refugee camp, has experienced intense Israeli bombing throughout the conflict, along with fierce ground fighting in its eastern areas. The Gaza health ministry reported that the Israeli assaults in al-Nuseirat had resulted in numerous casualties, including women and children, although it did not specify how many of the fatalities were combatants.

A health ministry official estimated the death toll at over 50, stating that emergency response teams were struggling to transport the dead and wounded to a hospital in the nearby city of Deir al-Balah. Many bodies remained in the streets, particularly around a market district. Local residents reported heavy Israeli drone and air strikes in al-Nuseirat, causing the deaths of women and children among others.

Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari explained that the rescue operation was conducted under fire in a residential neighborhood where Hamas had allegedly been holding captives among civilians under armed guard. In a televised news conference, Hagari mentioned that one Israeli soldier was severely injured and that Israeli forces responded with fire, including airstrikes.

The Gaza war continues to escalate despite calls from Israel’s chief ally, the United States, for a ceasefire and a deal to release the remaining hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinians imprisoned in Israel. The conflict has further destabilized the wider Middle East, involving Hamas’s main backer Iran and its heavily armed Lebanese ally Hezbollah, with whom Israeli officials have threatened potential conflict on Israel’s northern border.

Tokyo City Hall develops dating app to boost marriage and birth rates

TOKYO. Tokyo City Hall is developing a dating app called “Tokyo Futari Story,” designed to encourage couples, or “futari,” in a society where being “hitori,” or alone, is becoming increasingly common, in a bid to address Japan’s declining marriage and birth rates.

Currently, a website offering advice and general information for potential couples is available online. The dating app is expected to launch later this year and will be accessible via phone or web, a city official confirmed on Thursday.

While specific details are still under discussion, City Hall did not confirm reports from Japanese media that the app would require users to verify their identity with documents such as a driver’s license, tax records to prove income, and a signed declaration of readiness for marriage.

The urgency behind this initiative is underscored by recent data from the health ministry, revealing a sharp decline in marriage and birth rates. In 2023, there were 474,717 marriages, down from 504,930 in 2022, and births fell to 727,277 from 770,759.

Media reports also speculated that the app might ask for users’ height, job, and education details, though officials have not confirmed these features.

On a broader scale, the Japanese government has been addressing labor shortages by offering financial incentives for families with children, enhancing child-care facilities, and relaxing immigration policies to attract foreign workers.

During the 1970s “baby boom” era, Japan recorded over 2 million births annually. However, similar to trends among young adults worldwide, fewer Japanese are now interested in traditional marriage or having children. Contributing factors include demanding workplace norms that limit social interactions outside of work and the high costs associated with raising children.

In addition to the dating app, Tokyo City Hall sponsors events where singles can meet, provides counseling for couples on marriage, and even offers to turn couples’ love stories into manga comics or songs.

Tokyo City Hall’s innovative approach aims to tackle the demographic challenges head-on, promoting family life and helping individuals find partners in a rapidly changing society.

“Non-compliance will merit the declaration that these are illegal campaign materials carrying with it appropriate sanctions against the candidate/s. Take note and very important, this is not a requirement for the filing of Certificate of Candidacy (COC), but a requirement for the conduct of the campaign,” ani Garcia.
