A Taiwan-based Buddhist charity strives to spread the founding nun’s message of compassion worldwide

HUALIEN, Taiwan. When a 7.4-magnitude earthquake shook Taiwan in April, it took just 30 minutes for Tzu Chi, one of the region’s most prominent charities, to establish an emergency response center. Founded and led by 87-year-old nun Venerable Cheng Yen, Tzu Chi immediately provided hot meals and essential supplies, including drinking water, energy drinks, blankets, beds, and tents, to survivors and rescue teams.

The Jing Si Abode in Hualien, the quake’s epicenter, is the spiritual home of Tzu Chi. This international Buddhist organization boasts millions of members across 67 countries, including the United States. Venerable Cheng Yen founded Tzu Chi in 1966 after witnessing the lack of basic healthcare in the economically underdeveloped region. She invited local housewives to save 50 Taiwanese cents each month, a modest beginning for what would become a global humanitarian powerhouse.

Tzu Chi’s scope of work includes running hospitals, a medical school, and its own cable television channel in Taiwan. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Tzu Chi utilized its influence to procure 5 million vaccines for Taiwan’s population of 23 million. Known for its earthquake relief efforts, Tzu Chi’s global network spans disaster relief, construction of schools, houses of worship, homes, and hospitals, as well as refugee resettlement and hunger alleviation. Since its U.S. establishment in 1989, Tzu Chi has operated in 80 locations with both paid staff and volunteers.

Stephen Huang, executive director of Tzu Chi’s global volunteers, became a disciple of Venerable Cheng Yen 35 years ago. He praised her as “an ordinary person who does extraordinary things,” attributing her success to compassion. The foundation relies on its commissioners, trained members who fundraise monthly, without a minimum amount required but aiming to collect from at least 40 people.

Tzu Chi raised 5.6 billion New Taiwan Dollars ($175 million) in 2022, funding its extensive humanitarian efforts. Despite facing scrutiny over transparency, Tzu Chi publishes annual reports and financials online. Its history includes controversies, such as the failed attempt to rezone conservation land in Taipei’s Neihu district.

CEO Po-wen Yen, who joined Tzu Chi after the Neihu scandal, emphasized the organization’s commitment to disaster relief and global chapters. While supported by wealthy benefactors, most Tzu Chi members belong to the middle class. Julia Huang, a professor of anthropology, highlighted Tzu Chi’s unique blend of humanitarian aid and Buddhist teachings, noting its emphasis on compassion and engagement with the world.

Tzu Chi’s work transcends religious boundaries, involving volunteers from various faiths. The organization has built churches in Haiti, Ecuador, and Mexico, and mosques in Indonesia. “Although we start from Buddhism, that doesn’t limit who we help,” CEO Yen stated.

The foundation’s projects include constructing schools and homes in Mozambique, aiding Syrian refugees in Turkey, building Indonesia’s largest university, training Ukrainian refugees in Poland, and constructing homes in Bodhgaya, India. Stephen Huang described the global support following the Hualien earthquake, even from displaced Syrian refugees, as a testament to the interconnectedness of compassion.

“We are all connected by compassion,” Huang said. “That’s the power of love.”

SpaceX rocket failure leaves Starlink satellites in the wrong orbit

0

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. In a rare mishap, A SpaceX rocket failed for the first time in nearly a decade, leaving its batch of internet satellites in an orbit too low to sustain. The Falcon 9 rocket, which launched from California on Thursday night, was carrying 20 Starlink satellites when an upper-stage engine malfunction occurred. SpaceX attributed the failure to a liquid oxygen leak.

Despite efforts to correct the issue, SpaceX reported on Friday that only half of the satellites managed to establish contact with flight controllers. Attempts were made to boost these satellites to a higher orbit using onboard ion thrusters. However, with the low end of their orbit only 84 miles (135 kilometers) above Earth—less than half the intended altitude—SpaceX admitted, “our maximum available thrust is unlikely to be enough to successfully raise the satellites,” via a statement on X (formerly Twitter).

As a result, the satellites are expected to reenter the atmosphere and burn up, though no timeline was given for when this might occur. Currently, over 6,000 Starlink satellites orbit the Earth, providing internet service to some of the world’s most remote areas.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that the issue must be resolved before Falcon rockets can fly again. The impact of this accident on SpaceX’s upcoming crew flights remains uncertain. A private spaceflight led by tech entrepreneur Jared Isaacman is scheduled for July 31 from Florida, which includes plans for the first private spacewalk. This will be followed by a mid-August astronaut flight to the International Space Station for NASA.

Isaacman, who will command the private mission, expressed confidence in the Falcon 9’s reliability, stating it has “an incredible track record” and also features an emergency escape system.

The last time SpaceX experienced a launch failure was in 2015 during a cargo run to the space station, followed by a ground testing explosion the subsequent year. Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, emphasized that the high frequency of flights will aid in quickly identifying and resolving the problem.

“The Sergeant-At-Arms is hereby directed to carry out and implement this Order and make a return hereof within twenty-four (24) hours from its enforcement,” nakasaad sa kautusan.

British police have arrested a 34-year-old man linked to human remains found in suitcases

BRISTOL, England. British police have arrested a 34-year-old man in connection with the gruesome discovery of human remains found in suitcases at the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol earlier this week.

The suspect was apprehended in Bristol during the early hours of Saturday as part of a coordinated effort between the London Metropolitan Police and local authorities. He will be transferred to London for further questioning later today, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police.

The arrest follows the earlier detention of a 36-year-old man in London on Friday. This individual has since been released without charge, with police confirming that they are not currently seeking any other suspects in connection with the case.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Valentine described the arrest as a “significant development” in the ongoing investigation. The discovery of the suitcases containing human remains on Wednesday at the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge, located about 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of London, has shocked the local community and the nation.

Police believe they have identified the two male victims but are awaiting formal identification. Efforts are underway to locate and inform the victims’ next of kin.

In a related discovery, human remains were also found in a west London apartment, which authorities believe are connected to the body parts found in Bristol.

Valentine has assured the public that officers will be stationed in the Clifton and Shepherd’s Bush areas in the coming days to address any concerns and provide reassurance to those affected by this tragic incident.

The investigation continues as police work to uncover the full details surrounding this disturbing case.

Israeli airstrike aims at Hamas leader, killing at least 71, say Gaza health officials

GAZA/JERUSALEM. An Israeli airstrike in Gaza on Saturday killed at least 71 Palestinians, including in a designated humanitarian zone, according to Gaza’s health ministry. Israel stated that the attack targeted Hamas’ military chief, Mohammed Deif, and Rafa Salama, the commander of Hamas’ Khan Younis Brigade.

Hamas, however, denied these claims, calling them false and a justification for the attack. In a statement, Hamas said, “All the martyrs are civilians and what happened was a grave escalation of the war of genocide, backed by the American support and world silence.”

The Israeli military described Deif and Salama as key figures behind the October 7 attack that triggered the nine-month-long conflict in Gaza. Deif, who has survived seven previous assassination attempts, has been on Israel’s most wanted list for decades, held responsible for numerous suicide bombings resulting in the deaths of dozens of Israelis.

The strike’s impact was severe, with at least 289 people injured. The Gaza health ministry reported this as the deadliest toll in weeks. The attack occurred in Al-Mawasi, a designated humanitarian area where the Israeli army had previously urged Palestinians to move to follow evacuation orders from other regions.

The Israeli military released an aerial photograph of the strike site, which Reuters could not immediately verify. The military claimed that “terrorists hid among civilians” in the targeted location, which was described as an open area surrounded by trees, buildings, and sheds.

A military official, speaking in an online briefing, stated that the strike site was not a tent complex but an operational compound managed by Hamas. The official added, “We are still checking and verifying the results of the strike,” leaving Deif’s fate uncertain.

The nearby Nasser Hospital received many of the wounded. Hospital officials reported that the facility was overwhelmed and “no longer able to function” due to the scale of the offensive and a severe shortage of medical supplies.

In response to the attack, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant held special consultations, his office confirmed, in light of the “developments in Gaza.” The impact of the strike on ongoing ceasefire talks in Doha and Cairo remains unclear.

The Hamas-run media office reported that at least 100 people were killed and wounded, including members of the Civil Emergency Service. Sami Abu Zuhri, a senior Hamas official, dismissed Israeli allegations as “nonsense,” stressing that “Israel is not interested in reaching a ceasefire deal.”

Additionally, Palestinian health officials reported that an Israeli attack on a prayer hall at a Gaza camp for displaced people west of Gaza City resulted in at least ten more deaths.

This incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, raising concerns about the humanitarian situation and the prospects for peace in the region.

Shooting at Trump rally investigated as assassination attempt

0

BUTLER, Pa. Donald Trump was the apparent target of an assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, according to law enforcement officials. The former president, with his ear covered in blood, was swiftly pulled away by Secret Service agents. His campaign later confirmed he was “fine.”

The shooter, who law enforcement officials said was subsequently killed by the Secret Service, marked the first assassination attempt on a president or presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981. This incident unfolds amid a highly polarized political climate, just four months before the presidential elections and days before Trump is to be officially named the Republican nominee at the party’s convention.

A local prosecutor confirmed that the suspected gunman and at least one attendee are dead.

“President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act,” spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement. “He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow.”

The Secret Service also issued a statement saying, “the former President is safe.” Donald Trump Jr., Trump’s eldest son, shared that he spoke to his father on the phone and that “he is in great spirits.”

“There’s no place in America for this type of violence,” President Joe Biden remarked. “It’s sick. It’s sick.”

Two officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, informed The Associated Press about the ongoing investigation. They confirmed that the shooter was not an attendee at the rally and was killed by U.S. Secret Service agents.

The officials elaborated that the shooter was engaged by members of the U.S. Secret Service counterassault team and killed. This heavily armed tactical team travels with the president and major party nominees to confront active threats while other agents focus on safeguarding and evacuating the protectee.

It remains unclear whether Trump was struck by gunfire or was injured as he was pulled to the ground by agents.

Butler County district attorney Richard Goldinger confirmed in a phone interview that the suspected gunman was dead and at least one rally attendee was killed.

Rally Disrupted by Gunfire

Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, was showcasing a chart of border crossing numbers during his last rally before the Republican National Convention when the apparent shots began.

Within two minutes from the first shot, Trump was placed in a waiting SUV.

As Trump was speaking, a popping sound was heard, and the former president put his right hand up to his right ear as people in the stands behind him appeared shocked.

As the first pop rang out, Trump said, “Oh,” and grabbed his ear. Two more pops followed, and he crouched down. Additional shots were then heard.

Near the microphone at Trump’s lectern, someone shouted, “Get down, get down, get down, get down!” as agents tackled the former president. They piled atop him to shield him with their bodies, following training protocol, while other agents took positions on stage to search for the threat.

Screams erupted from the crowd of several thousand. A woman’s scream was particularly loud. Subsequently, voices were heard saying “shooter’s down” multiple times before someone asked, “are we good to move?” and “are we clear?” Then, someone ordered, “Let’s move.”

Trump could be heard on video saying twice, “Let me get my shoes, let me get my shoes,” with another voice saying, “I’ve got you, sir.”

Moments later, Trump got to his feet and reached toward his face with his right hand. Blood appeared to be on his face. He then pumped his fist in the air and seemed to mouth the word “Fight” twice, prompting loud cheers and chants of “USA. USA. USA” from the crowd.

The crowd cheered as he got back up and pumped his fist.

His motorcade left the venue shortly afterward. Video showed Trump turning back to the crowd and raising a fist just before being put into a vehicle.

Police began clearing the fairgrounds soon after Trump left the stage, describing the area as a crime scene.

Alec Baldwin weeps as judge dismisses involuntary manslaughter case mid-trial

SANTA FE, N.M. A New Mexico judge dismissed the involuntary manslaughter case against Alec Baldwin in the middle of his trial on Friday, declaring that the case cannot be filed again.

Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer dismissed the case citing police and prosecutorial misconduct for withholding evidence from the defense related to the 2021 shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film “Rust.”

Baldwin wept openly, hugged his attorneys, and then embraced his wife Hilaria, the mother of seven of his eight children, for a long moment before leaving the Santa Fe courthouse in an SUV without speaking to the media.

“The late discovery of this evidence during trial has impeded the effective use of evidence in such a way that it has impacted the fundamental fairness of the proceedings,” Judge Marlowe Sommer stated. “If this conduct does not rise to the level of bad faith, it certainly comes so near to bad faith to show signs of scorching.”

The critical evidence revealed on the trial’s second day of testimony was the existence of ammunition brought to the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office in March by a man who claimed it might be linked to Hutchins’ death. Prosecutors deemed the ammunition unrelated and insignificant, while Baldwin’s lawyers argued it was intentionally “buried.”

“Our goal from the beginning was to seek justice for Halyna Hutchins, and we fought to get this case tried on its merits,” District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies said in a statement. “We are disappointed that the case did not get to the jury.”

This decision marks the end of the nearly three-year legal ordeal for the 66-year-old Baldwin, who faced potential prison time had he been convicted. The incident occurred when a revolver he was handling during a rehearsal discharged, killing Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.

Baldwin and other producers of “Rust” still face civil lawsuits from Hutchins’ parents and sister. However, prosecutors did secure one conviction in connection to Hutchins’ death. Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the film’s armorer, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter, a conviction she is currently appealing.

Her attorney, Jason Bowles, announced plans to file a motion to dismiss her case following the judge’s decision. “The judge upheld the integrity of the system in dismissing the case,” Bowles stated.

Earlier on Friday, Judge Marlowe Sommer paused the trial and sent the jury home for the weekend to allow for testimony and arguments on the motion to dismiss. The key witness was Troy Teske, a retired police officer and close friend of Gutierrez-Reed’s father. Teske had brought the contentious ammunition to the sheriff’s office, claiming it could be related to the incident. Authorities, however, had known about Teske and the ammunition since shortly after the shooting and had deemed it irrelevant.

Special prosecutor Kari Morrissey defended the dismissal of the evidence, arguing it was a distraction meant to shift blame away from Gutierrez-Reed. “This is a wild goose chase that has no evidentiary value whatsoever,” Morrissey told the judge. “This is just a man trying to protect his daughter.”

Despite the dismissal, Morrissey expressed respect for the judge’s decision. She maintained that there was no reason to believe the undisclosed evidence was related to the “Rust” set.

The trial was still in its early stages, with prosecutors just beginning to present their case and none of the eyewitnesses from the set yet testifying. Baldwin’s siblings, Stephen Baldwin and Elizabeth Keuchler, attended each day of the trial, showing support alongside his wife.

On the eve of the trial, the judge had already dealt a significant blow to the prosecution by ruling that Baldwin’s role as a producer on the film was irrelevant and could not be included. Nonetheless, prosecutors pushed forward, portraying Baldwin as a reckless performer who disregarded basic gun safety protocols.

In contrast, Baldwin’s attorney, Alex Spiro, argued that Baldwin had acted in line with standard industry practices on set and that the responsibility for safety rested with the crew members responsible for handling the firearms before they reached the actors.
